General Discussion Do these cardboard inserts have an official use?
These are from the FRA bundle, but every time I get them I’m kinda like “huh neat” then chuck them in the trash. They show up in prerelease kits too and I’ve only really seen people use them as like tokens but is that officially what they’re for? Or are they just like little bonuses if they were planning on printing extra cardboard they were kinda like “oh let’s do something cute and make it so you can punch out some art” or something. I’m asking if there’s an “official use” for these because the small punch outs are obviously stuff like deathtouch counters, +1/+1 counters and such and just wanted to know if these bigger ones are supposed to be used for something.

They're a good low fat alternative to eating your cards

But you have to compensate for the low-fat by adding a lot of sugar and stickers, otherwise it’s pretty bad.
According to a friend, I mean.

I use them as card separators but honestly I see most people just throw them away

Dividers for splitting up bulk you store in bundle boxes or similar boxes

If my pre-release deck generates a lot of tokens or a token type that I didn't get the proper token for, I usually use them as the stand in for that token. Otherwise, they're just meant to be separators

Left can be used as a generic planeswalker emblem. Right can be art for whatever you use art for.

I use them as placeholder tokens if I dont have the token or too lazy to fish em out

They are the right size to hold the lid of a bundle box at the correct height, for when the little cardboard insert in the lid inevitably fails to catch the sides. Same size as the punch-out divider inserts which come with the bundle. I put one in the front/back/middle of the cards in the bundle box, since it’s taller than regular cards it protects them.

I glued magnets to the back of the smaller ones and stuck them on my fridge

Large one is a divider for the box and small one can be used in room cards

I use them mostly as tokens when I'm playtesting a deck and haven't bought the right tokens yet.
In reality, they're just garbage.

anything can be used as game tokens
but if this art fits idk, usually not
yes, it is better as a divider than a token

Used to be used to divide your sideboard from your maindeck. Now everybody plays Commander so sideboards don't exist.
20-sided spindowns used to be really great for tracking your life total as well, now they're 20 sides too short.

Dividers.
I’ve only been playing since foundations release, I’ve kept all these from pre release kits plus the 8 face cards from my jumpstarts (first cards I ever got) and all my art cards and various punch outs like the round hobbit door from that pre release and I’m going to lay them out in a cool way in a picture frame at some point.
To me it’s just a different slightly bigger art card.

They stop the glass bottles from smashing when I drop them into my blue box.

The Bigger ones fit in the bundles as card dividers while the smaller ones are "Stand-In Tokens", shaped like smaller cards to take up less board space and shaped like a card to let people identify tap states. I've found it incredibly easy to use these and just say "this one's a treasure token" during games.

Nothing in the game has official use except cards with magic the gathering back. Everything else in the game can be represented however else you want.

Well, yeah, that's why they made the stupid checkmark cards, lmao.
You are right that flip cards technically don't have a magic back but are official game pieces.

They are dividers. In lieu of the actual box dividers that used to come in the bundles

I put them in my bundle boxes to divide cards from that set by color. During and immediately after a prerelease, I use the one that comes in that box to separate the deck(s) I made there from the rest in case I want to play with them again later.

Their official use is being a full outer box. Outer box has its purpose - shows if contents have been tampered with, since it has to be destroyed to get inside (at least with prerelease kits, never seen bundle), but this means all the cardboard that goes into outer box inevitably turns into trash. So to decrease amount of waste produced from ripping apart outer box, they turned parts of those boxes into punch-outs. If somebody finds any use for them, great, mission accomplished. If they don't, it was going into trash anyway.

I'm just lost as to what the big circle cut out is supposed to be used for. I could only think of day night, but that can't be right in reality fracture.

u/Thantrax Dân 1d ago
The circle is the one I've been wondering about too. My thought was perhaps it's supposed to be a one-use coaster? But that's the best Idea I've got.

If you collect one hundred (100) of them, you get to pick one (1) nuclear weapon from the United States (US) nuclear arsenal to take home and keep. You do have to pay shipping and handling costs tho so idk if its worth it.

The one on the right would be helpful as a divider for decks. I've heard of people using ones like the left one as generic creature tokens

u/TerrainofWar Dan 1d ago
Intended as dividers. Most are easy to cut down to card size and use as tokens. I turned my Jace divider from the pre release into a Jace token using a label maker. Don't see why you couldn't do it for these. Only downside is the text on garruk is wordy and would take up a lot of space

I use them as dividers sometimes when building my decks or sorting cards (and I usually have a lot of that going on at once).

not really, dividers for whatever you put inside the bundle box, the small ones i've been keeping 1 or 2 with my dice for people who play room cards, since it perfectly covers the closed room

u/odanhammer SecREt LaiR 20h ago
It's something they could easily not include to cut down on costs. Maybe they could have done this vs removing everything else people actually do want

Large one fits in bundle boxes and deck boxes as seperators. Small ones are meant for emblems or any other kind of markers. You dont always get the right tokens in kits so this can be your 4/4 beast token. Or your treasure.

not really. I mostly see them used as dividers in your prerelease kit to keep different piles of cards separate.
