Subreddit Idea Megathread

Because if the r/askreddit link, we’ve had a huge influx of new members today. Because of that, I’d like to make this thread to ask for ideas to improve the subreddit, and keep things interesting. We are going to try and make this a subreddit worth keeping in your feed.

We really aren’t sure what do do with the subreddit since it blew up like this, and would like to see what ideas you have. I’ve also added a few baseline rules since we had no rules when we started.

Edit: I would also like to clarify that this sub is intended to entertain. You shouldn’t take anything too seriously on this sub. We want you to be able to flex your creativity here and make others laugh.

Subreddit Message Coronavirus Posts

We are normally pretty lax about what goes on in this subreddit as we want to let you guys decide what content you want to see by upvoting good content and downvoting bad content, but given the current situation we will be removing any posts related to Coronavirus.

You can help us with this by reporting any posts you see about the virus.

Gal Gadot's recent movie 'The Runner' was titled similarly to 'Runner' (starring Alan Ritchson), and released around the same time, purposefully. To trick people into watching Gadot's movie by accident. To inflate the viewership figures on her movie

I believe this to be true because she is a terrible actress, and 'The Runner' was a terrible, terrible movie.

But 'Runner', while not great, was entertaining and a good viewing experience.

Certified Fact iPhone ads feature people with huge hands so the phones don’t look as stupidly huge and unwieldy to hold as they have actually become.

In the long run acclimatising us to humongous phones with this false image of holdable-ness enables more phone snatching and falling out of pockets and smashing, which means we all buy more new phones.

META pushed the story about Mark's awkward Guinness sip to distract from his trainwreck interview responses, including refusing to explain where Muse gets its video training data.

Getting an emergency, same day passport at the Newport Passport office takes exactly 4 hours. No more no less. This causes anxious travellers to hang around Newport all morning. I think that the Asda store manager and the Newport chamber of commerce are in cahoots with the HM Government to increase Spoiler

....the sale of coffees and English breakfasts around the Newport Passport Office area.

Because there is no way it takes exactly 4 hours to print a passport

HR memes are being spread more because it’s easier to blame a female-dominated field for the employment crisis

The Human Resources field in the US is largely women (70-80%) and now that we are in an employment crisis where people are getting laid off, not getting raises, applications being ignored, etc, the memes are all pointing to a stereotypical hr lady (Anne Hathaway meme) because it’s easier to blame a female dominated field rather than the male dominated executive field, despite the most likely scenario is the executives initiated layoffs, did not approve bonuses, pushed AI in all aspects of the company (including hiring and resume reviewing). They are the face of blame to applications for entry jobs getting hundreds of applicants meaning you don’t get a tailored response. It’s not catastrophic in terms of a conspiracy but it is just really telling the administration and society we are in where the HR field and not the executive suite is the cultural face of a hiring crisis.

Big True Google is making search results worse to make Gemini more appealing

Search results are getting worse; it’s not just me? I mean I’m having to go through multiple pages when before what I wanted was often on the front page. I also mean that often I give up after 5 pages of results and see what Gemini said. I think they’re actively making search worse to make Gemini look better. It might just be there isn’t enough compute to do both and search is suffering. 🤷

Total Garbo most women think they care about height/size more than they do because most men fib about it

i’d go so far as to say the same applies for women’s weight too. so many people are just out here stretching the truth by 1-2 inches or 10-15 pounds and it’s artificially inflating everyone’s standards. it’s a big old cycle

Hot Take Taylor Swift paid Netflix/Love is Blind to get contestants to speak about her in their most recent season

Watching season 11 of love is blind now, not even past episode one and there’s been multiple mentions and conversations specifically about loving Taylor swift and her songwriting etc.

She’s been declining in public opinion a little for a while now, and she’s attempting to get relevant and remind the public they love her via a very popular tv show

The recent controversies in the media (Clancy, Cornell, and Shane Gillis) are being pushed by conservative outlets, not liberal.

• Upvotes

The reason is they know feminists and the obnoxious liberal class can't help but take the bait and be awful about it.

This is because Republicans are going to see record losses in the Midterms and there's nothing they can do to get people to vote for them. So they get the worst people online riled up hoping everyone votes for Republican to spite them. Then they'll go "Do you want more of this? then vote Democrat"

Certified Fact Hard shell tacos are a practical joke played on non-Mexicans to drive business to local dry-cleaners

There is absolutely no practical way of eating a hard shell taco without it falling apart and ruining your clothes and the contents including salsa, guac and sour cream are specifically designed to stain clothing

Big True Ads don't work. The idea (and even metrics) have been perpetuated by big ad to sell more ads since the first carving was done advertising a little hole in the wall the local hunter gatherers already knew about.

Little ad spent 10% of their initial proceeds buying their first customer's product, "Just look at last quarter's growth, Zug!"

Hot Take Daiso's establishment into the US market is supposed to be a counter-attack to combat the stigma already attached to dollar stores

Think about your average dollar store: Very messy, disorganized, bad-bargain, the items are already bad-quality anyways, etc

Now think about Daiso's presentation: Clean, upscale, cutesy, also typically found in most urban commercial shopping centers, you name it

While Daiso is not a dollar store in the strict traditional sense, it is in the same umbrella of stores known as variety stores.

By remaining the good-bargain store it is, Daiso can allow for a better retail ecosystem to flourish around low income and working class neighborhoods so that people can have a more upscale shopping experience while trust in dollar stores can actually increase rather than decline.

Kind of a best-of-both-worlds strategy.

All the daytime adverts for "if you got injured at work" solicitors isn't to advertise solicitors, but is propaganda to make people sick off work think that most people who aren't working that day are also ill or injured. So that they don't quit working.

Big True M&S have been astroturfing their supermarkets on social media for several months to improve their sales among young people.

I'm an older Gen Z, and people around my age always viewed M&S as an old stuffy expensive shop for pensioners. In the past few months, however, there's been an uptick in social media posts about some new amazing M&S product, or how M&S isn't actually as expensive as you think it is, guys. Open a UK Reddit posts about groceries, someone's shilling M&S in the top comments. Open Twitter, some guy in his 20s talking about their new pizza with 4k likes. Open Tiktok, someone's doing an M&S haul.

I know so many people who have started doing parts of their shopping at M&S recently. Maybe a year ago, I didn't know anyone who shopped there.

I also think there's a class thing going on here. A lot of their produce is on similar pricing to the other supermarkets, but they still benefit from having a slightly elevated expensive image. This means your average Joe and Jane feels a bit better about themselves when they do a shopping there, compared to Tesco or Morrisons where they could get the same stuff for maybe £4 cheaper.

Not a huge issue in the grand scheme of things, but I don't like how insidious this kind of marketing feels. I've told people that I think this and they've looked at me like I've grown two heads - as if they're saying 'not me, I could never be manipulated by algorithms'.

Hot Take Doctors tell you to fast so they get better sales at the hospital coffee shop.

Sometimes your doctor schedules a test that has to be done in a hospital and they make you starve yourself for like twelve hours first.

The conspiracy is that it's not medically necessary to fast before some of those tests but they require it anyway just to get better sales in the cafeteria or coffee shop.

Star Stickers disguising facial spots actually bring more attention to the fact you not only have a spot, but companies are charging 100x more for stickers you got for free as a child.

Seems to be a new trend, and the ones chemists are selling don't appear to actually contain any anti-spot ingredients.
