Hate watching the games, at this point.

I hate how boring this team is to watch. I've watched probably 80% of all Kings games for 25 years. We've had bad teams before but at least they were fun to watch. Even if it was just because we were hitting people, or fighting, or we were terrible but had some young prospects to keep an eye on. This team is truly boring and uninteresting.

I think that’s my problem especially the last couple seasons here. This team isn’t fun to watch. At least in 2019 and part of that 2019-20 season the Kings were a fun team that was young, searching for it identity, but capable of scoring enough goals each night to make things interesting. This style right now is just bad to watch. It’s boring. It isn’t fun at all and like someone else said. It feels like a chore

It genuinely feels like we can barely string together a few passes. There doesn't look to be any chemistry. We don't have any exciting players to watch except for a couple of bursts per game from Panarin, Byfield and Clarke. Maybe I'm projecting but it feels like more than a few of the guys have checked out as well. Oh, and our defense is dogshit and can't keep up with anybody nor can they move the puck to create any offense. Don't get me started on our goaltending.
Edit: by the way, we're the third oldest team in the league. cool.

I live in Chicago and, when we have a passable product on ice, I'll stay up til midnight to see the end of a game. Watched the opener and said fuck it.

If you were expecting some crazy fireworks to start the season, or even end the season, I feel kinda bad for you. This year isn’t expected to be much. The shittiest year before the rebuild truly begins.

I remember how bad we used to be. The tickets were cheap and you could have a fun time even though you knew the team was likely going to lose. This feels grosser because the org pretends it's serious when it's not. I'll always love the Kings, but I have extremely limited time. If this is what the organization is putting out on the ice, I won't be tuning in much, attending games or spending money. I'll take it as seriously as they do.

I do remember friends going to Kings games just for the cheap beer. This was many years ago. they weren't even into hockey, but it was a fun night out

I'm still reliving the 2014 parade. Remember, it took the Dodgers over 30 years and the Knicks over 50. And for the Leafs, still counting...

It’s ok, this was long overdue.
Use the Avs as a model for the rebuild. Tank hard, tank fast, manage assets in a way that is purely concerned about the future. Talk a bottom 5 team into trading a first for an underperforming but well regarded young player.

u/NewRetroGamer85 10h ago
I honestly forgot Colorado did that and they've been consistently good every year since then. Even winning the cup once. But to do that, the Kings need a competent owner and FO that knows how to make a winning team. Not look for the best players, but the right ones.

Glad I didnt pony up for the ABTV subscription yet, I'll be rooting us on from the game threads and box scores.

Every team has its cycles of up and down. We won the cup twice in the last 15 years (yes, over a decade ago but that's still relatively recent in the sports world). We tried to extend that run for far too many years, trying to ride "the Kopi/Drew era". We had a few down years in there where we were able to restock our prospects but we fucked those up with either poor picks or poor development. We managed to make the playoffs a bunch of years in a row but making the playoffs and getting bounced in the first round is the worst place to be in hockey because you're not winning the cup nor getting good draft picks.
Long story short, it's truly time for a proper rebuild. People in this subreddit love to point to the Sharks and Ducks and how exciting those teams are now. Those people conveniently forget to mention that those teams both missed the playoffs for nearly a decade. That's what we're staring at now. We need to embrace the rebuild. Get value for everybody you can on this current roster. Get some high draft picks and develop them properly. But be prepared to be a basement dweller for the next 4-7 years.
While we're at it, let's get new ownership and an entirely new front office, please.

Sneaking into the playoffs in 2022 when we werent expected to (largely due to Vegas having historical injury problems that season iirc) was the worst thing that could’ve happened.
We should’ve had that ~5 year rebuild cycle. Instead, we started making big moves thinking we were “right there” instead of being patient.
2
u/da40kNoob 13h ago
I don't disagree with you but I also don't think this rebuild cycle would've worked given how poorly most of our prospects panned out. Byfield still hasn't arrived (and I'm a Byfield apologist), Clarke is decent, maybe we would've kept Faber and Vilardi, but we whiffed way too hard on Turcotte, Kaliyev, Fagemo, and whoever else we had. I still think the root of our problem is ownership and the front office. We simply aren't good enough at drafting and developing our players. Frankly, it feels like our ownership doesn't care about winning.

u/Sensitive-Wheel6056 13h ago
Every teams fans say the same thing tho. Ownership is a constant obstacle to real long lasting success. Ownership probably won't change but I can see an overhaul of the front office happening minus the coach. Only problem with that is I dont see a clear upgrade available over Holland right now.
3
u/da40kNoob 12h ago
I'd rather go with an unproven GM with some fresh ideas than keep Holland. He only knows how to get older and go after the same tired vets. We've seen his playbook in multiple places now and it hasn't worked since his glory days in Detroit.
As far as ownership goes, you're right that we probably won't see new ownership. But it's such a boys' club over there that I don't know if they'll get rid of Luc & co. We'll see what happens if we end up being a bottom 5 or 10 team this season.
1
u/poptorched 8h ago
I think they’re only keeping Luc bc he’s making them money, but when that goes away (aka the playoff revenue goes away) they’ll have no issues cutting him off. He can still be part of the org outside of hockey ops, but they’re not going to value their friend over profits bc then they’ll lose their own jobs. Money over everything and all that
1
u/poptorched 8h ago
Well they’ll have to do a search. Of course there’s no obvious upgrade we see rn bc there’s only failed GMs out there which we don’t need any more of. There’s an upgrade out there and we don’t know them which is fine. No retreads, find someone with some hockey management experience, but that has no connections to this org.

u/Sensitive-Wheel6056 6h ago
Yeah for sure. But we won't get a better picture of potential candidates until the season is over most likely. The president should be looked at also. Love Robitaille, but unless he's willing to push for a total tear down and build through the draft again then he needs to be tossed. Wouldn't it be sweet if we got DuPont? Who better for him to play with than Doughty for a year or 2 then take over as that top D.

All I'm asking for is 40 shots on goal EVERY night. They may not be exciting to watch but watching a team that has no chemistry producing shots on goal will eventually score goals. The chemistry prior to the McDavid goal was actually pretty exciting.

u/Fistandantilus77 12h ago
hopefully quietly starting Dean 2.0. lets suck for 3 years - get some high end picks to add to last years draft class and build our next core. We trade off any vet we can at the deadline for 27, 28, and 29 draft picks and reload this thing. we reset our cap and payroll and start the process for the next ascedning contender. Right now we are the oldest team in the league, not a cup contender, and are more than 1 player away from being so. The ceiling of playoff and out should never be the standard for any team unless they are a young ascending core which we are not. Like when DL got here who already had Kopi, Quick and Bernier up and/or in the system, we already have (not counting last years draft class) one or 2 potential quality defensemen and 3 potential starting goaltenders so there are already a few pieces potentoally. I knowing coming into last years draft we had a bottom 5 system so pre 2026 picks maybe there are a couple of bottom six fowards (I have strangely high hopes for Jimmy Lombardi who I am hoping can be another Mike Cammalleri) but I wont hold my breath. We need to build and the best way to do it is to suck, trade out players who fill current boxes and bring in and develop the right players for those boxes. We already have the blue print and unlike a lot of teams in a lot of sports who tank (I am looking at my wife's Baltimore Oriole's) we know it can work because it was step by step and led to 2 cups. Lets do it again.

u/poptorched 8h ago
I totally agree with all of this. We’ll probably be one of the few sellers this deadline and we’ll also be one for he few sellers with multiple pieces to sell so hopefully this will be a sellers market (Holland did well last season in getting assets back for meh players). I also have high hopes for Lombardi and idk why. He’s adorable so many be that’s something, but I just like the way he plays and he’s putting up better offensive numbers every year so that’s cool

u/Fistandantilus77 7h ago
exactly. In my own mind I have started the rebuild with the 2026 draft class and am following them closely. I figure if any pieces become league average or better regulars at the box they are placed in then all the better and it is a bonus. Hopefully we follow suit, suck even they dont wan't to, and sell off really anyone but especially anyone over 25. I have to imagine Panarin and Kempe can bring in quality picks or combo picks and the rest can bring in the first-fourth's we need. We dont have a third next year. It is time to rinse and repeat and I am more than fine with a 3-4 year cellar run and the top 5 picks that come with it. Yes, we obviosuly have to hit on those picks. I am just of the opinion it is pointless to keep bringing in second, third, and line vets when clearly there is a cap to what this team can reealistically achieve.

I wish you could fire owners. Because you gotta cut the head of the snake off to fix the problem.
I started watching them back in the 1993-94 season. Outside of the outlier 2012-14 seasons, They’ve only advanced beyond the first round once during that stretch (2000-01) They’ll either suck or lose in the first round with no chance at making any noise.
You could fire coaches, fire gm’s, commit to a rebuild and whatever else. As long as Phillip Anschutz and the AEG shitheads are running the Kings this is the norm

This team sucks ass but we've played 4 cup contenders to start the year. Wasn't too unexpected to have zero wins this early.

the season has gone as far as I had predicted, bad. waiting for the drew extension to be announced because it can always get worse.

With Arte selling the Angels, I think it makes Anshutz the worst owner of an LA area team now. Although Balmer is a close second

Kings will trade the pick for a 30 year old with 1 year on his contract. The pick will end up being top 5. Kings will forget to request the trade to be top 5 protected,
Kings. Our Kings

as long as Dancing Doughty is team captain, this team is not going to do work as a team. did Kemper not want the "C"? why did we get Perry again? I don't see a cup this year, hopefully this team & coach will at least be 500 this year. 🤷♂️

This is what the Kings get for going back to the Bruce McNall jerseys. They should’ve kept the home plate logo.

I've been a fan of the Kings for my entire 42 years of life. I've seen them worse. It's still early, but...well, it probably won't get much better. Maybe they will finally see that a full rebuild is in order.
