Announcement Enough is enough. Addressing the rampant misogyny in this community.

3.5k Upvotes

Hello r/longhair,

We don’t often need to address the meta, but this is one of those times. This likely won’t be a popular discussion, but it’s necessary.

As someone with long hair, who has experienced botched cuts, and as a retired stylist specializing in long hair, I understand the frustration of a bad haircut or losing more length than intended. However, the growing hostility toward hairstylists, especially female stylists, is becoming a real concern.

Lately, we’ve seen (and removed) an increasing number of comments referring to female hairstylists as catty, jealous, bitches, or otherwise feeding into the tired narrative that women are out to get each other. No one makes these accusations against male stylists. These comments are rooted in misogyny, plain and simple. If you’re making those comments, stop. This subreddit will not be a place for people to air their resentment toward women under the guise of complaining about haircuts. That is not a culture we will be fostering. If that’s a problem, leave.

This has escalated beyond just insults. This week alone, a user advocated for hairstylists to be stabbed until they "get the message," and another said they’d punch their stylist in the face. The fact that we now need to put automated safeguards in place to catch violent threats in a hair community is beyond ridiculous. There is no justifying this level of vitriol. It’s hair. People feeling entitled to rage over haircuts is one thing, but taking it to the point of threats and violence is completely unhinged. Both users have been banned, and authorities have been contacted regarding the threats.

This isn’t just about direct threats. Many hairstylists in this community have said they no longer feel safe participating because of the level of hostility here. That should never happen. This subreddit should not be a place where professionals are afraid to share their expertise because they might be met with harassment, abuse, or outright threats of violence.

So, this is the line. We are enacting a zero-tolerance policy for misogyny, harassment, threats, review bombing, doxxing, or any attempt to turn this subreddit into a mob. This applies to hairstylists, community members, and anyone else. If you can’t participate without being aggressive, hateful, or outright dangerous, you’re gone. No warnings. No exceptions.

If that upsets you, go somewhere else. This ends now.

Hair Fetishist Warning Post - Share Your Experiences!

Hi everyone! There are a lot of fetishists who prey on our users in this sub, especially in DM's. We do ban them but it doesn't stop the DM's. My intent here is to have a post where our members can share their experiences to warn others. We'll sticky this post as well as a reference.

Tell us what nasty tricks they tried, what lies they told, or whatever else you want. Just vent if you feel like it.

No defending fetishists - you'll be banned. Really. Don't test us.

Assume that any DM's you get about hair are likely fetishists and ask why they can't just comment in the sub if they have genuine advice.

Let's call them out here.

Fluff I miss hair magazines at the salon

Getting my hair trimmed today (finally sitting on it!!). Does anyone else miss the hair fashion/style magazines of the 2000-2010’s at the salon?

I can look up a photo on my phone, but I’m nostalgic for flipping through a non-wedding hair magazine or ultra artistic book on hair while waiting to find a sample image (for me, bangs).

Edit: my stylist did great on bangs, botched my body of hair. We went 3 for 3 on the asymmetry of her one run through on my ends. On the third time standing up and pulling my hair down tightly, I unintentionally reacted and said “wait what the fuck?” When I saw I’d be losing another half inch because of her job. Ends feel suuuuper thick compared to the body, still shedding, no light nice feeling I’m used to after a haircut. Cried in my car and regretted choosing a salon with availability over my average—good person. 😔😔

I usually French braid my hair overnight with hair a little bit damp.

Hair Color: mixture of

  1. Golden Green Light Blonde (Lolane Pixxel) &

  2. Golden Blonde (Garnier)

Slight Highlights Lolane Extra Light Blonde - I usually do it separately like on the next day. In a style of shampooing the outer most of hair

Natural Dye: Lemon

Result: Light Blonde consecutive use but if near the ocean or salty water result is Copper Blonde

Lemon Juice leave on for 30 minutes under the sun,

Natural Dye: Hibiscus Flower

Result: Black

Harvest Flower any color will do, I usually use Red since it's common, Remove the petals then grind the rest til juice come out, Put on dry hair for 10 minutes, it covers gray or white hair

Help wanted Can I dye myself or should I just go in?

My hair is finally the length and health I’ve always wanted, but the color I truly hate. I want to get back to my natural color, or as close as possible, but I’m concerned I will have to “fill” the hair first. I know ideally I should just go to the salon but we’re trying to save money right now. Ultimately I will probably just end up doing nothing for fear of ruining it, but hoping I could get some input. My natural color is somewhere between 6-7A/N. It’s a lot of highlights mixed throughout and I have a decent sized patch in the back of my head that’s almost white blonde naturally.

Help wanted Foods or supplements that helped your hair grow faster?

• Upvotes

I noticed that magnesium glycinate seemed to help with hair growth, since Glycine is an amino acid that goes into keratin which goes into hair. And the magnesium helps absorb the glycine.

I’ve also noticed that on months where I incorporated more eggs into my diet, my hair grew faster than the usual half inch a month.

Help wanted How do I fix my hair in a claw clip?

I usually will twist my hair up then clip it in a somewhat "French twist" but I love having my hair like this as well I just hate how my hair will sit in the middle of the clip like so. Is there any way to fix this?

Or please give me other ways to use a claw clip for my hair! I hate using hair ties and prefer a clip.

THANK YOUUU

I’m Not very good at styling my hair. I want that blowout look with movement and curled ends. Part of the problem is I want as easy as can be. I’ve tried everything but I find everything is tricky or hard to do and I don’t ever get a great result. What tools do you swear by for an easy blow out style like this?

Help wanted Not satisfied with my hair anymore

I apologize in advance for the bad quality of my pictures.

My hair was at hips length and so voluminous but for some reason I wanted to change and went on and got layers.

The last picture was my inspiration, the first two pictures are of my hair before getting the layers and the other 3 are after.

My hairdresser definitely played me and its the second time that I go to her, the first time she did something similar but the layers were so short ( literally few centimeters between each layer) so I didn't pay much attention and I thought she was scared to cut much of my hait that I wouldn't end up liking it, and so I didn't really give it much of a thought. But this second time I can see that she definitely screwed my hair and I hate it!

My hair now suddenly feels so short and I hate that so much that I wanna cut it off (ik it sounds contradicting but that's really how I feel). besides I cant even find how to style it anymore, the heatless curls dont work as well as they used to because my hair at the ends is so thin.

Thank you for reading if you'd made it through my post, I just wanted to vent and see what others think if I should really go on with my idea and cut it at least till it's even.

Hair victory Grown my hip length hair from pixie!!

In the last decade, I have experimented with almost all types of hair length! Now finally, I want my hair to grow till my knees. My last hair cut was pixie about four years ago. So this is my almost 4 year hair length.

My hair routine:

- I use Ayurvedic shampoo called "Kesh King;" it includes manyy herbs. It suits my hair the BEST.

- Also, a night before shampooing, I oil my hair with "Hair and Care" oil, which features aloe vera, olive oil and green tea.

Many people oil their hair up about 30-45 minutes before washing them up but for me a night before shampooing has worked best. This shampoo and oil have been my GO-TO since manyyy years.

Help wanted WARNING!! Do not use a tight bonnet!

Thumbnail

So recently i have been noticing that my hair has been thinning more than usual, i was so confused as to why, I thought it was hair loss from the scalp, but then i started tracking my hair loss every shower and noticed a lot of hairs weren’t that long. So it was breakage.

Then i noticed how short my hair was under!! Like this is insane how many pieces are just super short rn. I had this before but not as bad. I think it’s from my bonnet, well I’m like 99% sure. It’s so bad right now and not just the bottom of my hairline ending, literally all around where my hair ends and skin begins. Some pieces don’t even come from all the way down the bottom but where i drew the arrow. I didn’t have that before.

I have been wearing my bonnet a lot also during the day when I’m at home, the bonnet would often slip up and kinda sit on my hair instead of my skin. For it to stay on my skin it has to be very loose. But I think i wear it more often and tighter than i did before and thats why i now have a lot more breakage.

Now I want to buy a bonnet that doesn’t have an elastic band. So the one in the fourth picture, it’s also real silk. The one in the last pic is the one I use, with an adjustable elastic band (bounce curl bonnet).

I also feel like my hair is thinner on one side and that’s the side where i wear my bag. I try to be careful but my hair often gets stuck under the band. I think it’s because of that. But it’s so crazy to me to comprehend that a factor like that can cause significant damage to your hair.

If anyone has any tips to prevent more breakage or to regrow my hair quicker or something, please let me know. My hair is so long but so thin rn it’s see through.

Help wanted How to keep curls

My curls don't last more than a few minutes once I step outside. Anyone have any tips? I live in Florida so humidity is a problem, but I'm sure the weight of my hair doesn't help. Note: I only curl my hair 1-2 per year so I would like to enjoy it longer than a few minutes 🙃

Help wanted Does yall's head not hurt all the time?

Post image

I have had shorter hair my whole life because I didn't know how to take care of my curls. Now that I've got that part down, I've been growing it out finally!

It is a little below bra strap length now, longest it's ever been! It's so pretty! But my head is always aching, if I wear it up, down, in braids, any way I put it, it's just too much. I have fine, normal weight hair. I'm wondering if everyone is just putting up with this all the time or if I just have a weak baby head.

Help wanted How can I help my hair…

Post image
15 Upvotes

Edit: I forgot to mention I had braided it the night before that’s why it’s wavy here, my hair is pretty much straight otherwise.

I take good care of my hair I don't get why it looks so....dead? It looks dry and frizzy but it doesn't feel dry, it feels light but a little rough?
Idk. I sleep with protective hairstyles, I have never dyed or bleached it except for a small pink peakaboo section on the lower back of my head but none of the dyed stuff can be seen in this photo, and even then there was no bleached used. I haven't used any sort of heat on my hair in 4 years now, not even a blow dryer. I have tried non frizz shampoos, Redken all soft, smoothing and anti frizz conditioners, hair oils, leave in conditioners, mask, etc. NOTHING MAKES A DIFFERENCE.
No matter what I use it has no eftect on my hair I just don't know what to do or try anymore.

Help wanted Halloween Hair Advice

Thumbnail

Hello everyone!

I am looking for advice on how to TEMPORARILY make my natural blonde hair appear black without risking permanent pigmentation.

My partner and I are going as Gomez and Morticia for Halloween. He is planning on committing to the bit in changing his facial hair to match the character. I would like to do the same in having black hair, but am fearful of permanently altering my natural hair.

Only thought is maybe Vaseline on my hair before attempting to put any temporary pigmented products on?
I’m hoping someone has done this with success and can help confirm before I mess up my hair.

Pictures for tax!

*bonus if you have a recommendation for where to chop for health :)

(Also kindly suggesting for everyone posting hair pictures - try to find one with some contrast between your shirt and hair color!)

Help wanted Applying seb derm treatment to the back of your own head?

I have a patch of seb derm on the back of my head, right where I can't see it. It doesn't itch or hurt much.

The annoying part is applying the treatment.
My current routine: I stand in front of a mirror and hold my phone up behind my head as a second mirror so I can find the spot. That leaves one hand to both part my hair and apply the treatment, which is really awkward. The image is also flipped, so I keep going the wrong way, and I'm never sure I actually got it on the right spot.

I imagine it's even harder with long hair: the hair falls back as soon as you let go, the treatment gets on your hair instead of your scalp, and you can't wash it every day.

For those of you who deal with this:
How do you apply treatment to spots you can't see?
Any tools or tricks that actually help?
What's the most annoying part of your current method?

Would really appreciate any tips.

Help wanted I miss my long hair so much

The first 4 photos are of my long hair and the last 3 photos are of my short hair.

I’m very sorry. I just feel so ugly in my new haircut. I don’t know what to do anymore.

I really miss how my long hair framed my face but now I just feel like I look so incredibly silly and that my haircut doesn’t suit me. I genuinely feel like I look so boring and ugly.

Honestly, I think it’s affecting my confidence.
