Saw this on my way in to work! Fantastic idea, this bit is absolutely HORRENDOUS with cyclists wearing no helmet speeding through red lights.

Red light jumping is against the law, but it’s fine not to wear a helmet.

In China, a similar violation will end up with you being forced to watch a 20 minute safety video AND a short test afterwards, these guys are getting off lightly by comparison.

Love this! But we are going to need bigger screens soon.

Projector screens. Or a advertisement van parked on the pavement.

I've been in london today and its countess amount of times I've nearly been run over at zebra crossing/lights. I like to say a sassy comment to the as they ride by me.

u/DMMMOM 10h ago
Crazy to think this even needs saying. You jump a red light, you dice with death.
2
u/Intergalatic_Baker Londoner, inside ULEZ 10h ago
The LondonCycling sub I pinched this from were defending their not stopping shit… Like, they’re boasting how they’ve never had a crash after 88,000 miles, cool thing.
I’ve literally seen a dozen bike crashes that go from dickhead with a bloody injury and ruined shirt or broken arm/gashes bad enough that paramedics are needed to put one of those clotting bandages on.2
u/disbeliefable 2h ago
You’re cherry picking. There is plenty of argument there about this subject.
8
u/tradegreek 11h ago
Should they not just fine them anyway? What stops repeat offenders like to they take their details? I feel like we are too soft on anti social behaviour in general.
9
u/Ok-Nobody6221 11h ago
First time offenders for traffic offences get an opportunity to take a speed awareness course so this seems equivalent for cyclists
6
u/CaleyAg-gro 10h ago
The choice is £100 and three points or £100+ and a speed awareness course. These offenders should still get the fine.
1
u/Ok-Nobody6221 9h ago
Ah yes, I couldn't remember if it was also a fine
3
u/0100001101110111 7h ago
There’s no fine with the speed awareness course but you have to pay to take the course and it’s usually more expensive than the fine anyway.
1
u/hairyshar 10h ago
All be it a 2-3 minute course taken there and then
1
u/Ok-Nobody6221 9h ago
I'd argue this is a step above doing nothing, I can see it actually achieving something seeing that some of the cyclists seem thoughtless rather than maliciousÂ
•
u/hairyshar 55m ago
Agreed, it may be enough to snap them out of the herd mind of " well everyone else is, the ones behind me will be annoyed for delaying them if I don't " mindset
1
u/adjective_noun_d1git 9h ago
Also it's not first time offenders is any offence that's not within 3yrs of the last one.

2
u/Wanted_Solicitation 10h ago
Walked past this this morning and wondered what the fuck they were doing lol
3
u/adjective_noun_d1git 9h ago
I usually ride through that junction to work but this morning I parked up earlier to get a longer walk in. Was pretty funny walking past all the naughty torties.

Genuinely embarrassed for everyone involved in this
38
u/Pwoinklokinoid 12h ago
This is least embarrassing for the Police, its a valid way to do some community policing without making it a pay to win situation with fines.
-6
u/This-Risk-3737 11h ago
It's ridiculous. Not one of those cyclists ran the lights because they weren't educated about what they mean.
6
u/Pwoinklokinoid 11h ago
Look i am not here to enforce the law, I just think its a valid way to give people a chance. A little public shaming like this is harmless apart from to their ego.

u/Sugelanren777 11h ago
Number 1 most effective bit of fire safety training is seeing when fires go wrong. When you hear real cases of people being pancaked on the road by running a red , it might make them think.

u/Neat_Marionberry7236 11h ago
As a cyclist I am delighted this is being implemented. Should tackle in particular electric bikes. No helmet, no stopping at red lights usually and a crazy speed. It’s ridiculous
-2
u/Intergalatic_Baker Londoner, inside ULEZ 10h ago
Good to see some hire bikes in this, but I’m fully with you on the helmets stuff.
Ideal law, with only one warning before fines, is that one or more item(s) of clothing must be reflective high-vis seen from the front and back.
Hell, if it was just the one, I’d basically direct people to high-vis backpack covers, plus the bike lights/wheel reflectors.
2
u/studiesinsilver 10h ago
Good. Red lights are for any vehicle on the road, however they’re powered. Learn the rules or get the fuck off the road!
2
2
u/photoben Waltham Forest 7h ago
Right? I just wish they’d do this for the car drivers that bust reds all the time.

u/VibrantHumanoidus 10h ago
C'mon, it's not even a minute video.
Put some Rick Rolling for at least half an hour, bastards running red lights would think twice next time.
3
u/Intergalatic_Baker Londoner, inside ULEZ 10h ago
It’s 47 seconds, plus the time taken to be stopped by Plod, giving their details then sent on their way.
Reckon they could be there for longer than just this video.
-3
u/Elegant_Ad8949 12h ago
Just by the way, treating red lights as stop signs is safer for cyclists and other car traffic unless it's a red light specifically designed for cyclists additionally some lights won't change for cyclists at all I stop at every red light I see because I'm a good cyclist but there are still some I have to go through because they won't change or there is literally no one else about however that doesn't really apply to the City of London
7
u/Intergalatic_Baker Londoner, inside ULEZ 11h ago
Just stop at the fucking light. Too many instances I've witnessed a rider ignore a red light and then get knocked off by a car that didn't expect it to be there, because, Red Lights.
1
u/Elegant_Ad8949 10h ago
I fucking don't, can you read? In the first sentence I say that I do stop at red lights. . However there are a couple of red lights that would be physically impossible for me to make my way through. I treat them as a stop sign, where I come to a full stop and check all directions before proceeding, as traffic lights are built using either millimeter wave radar or in-ground induction loops. They are physically incapable of detecting cyclists. I could sit at certain red lights all day and all night without them ever changing unless a car came up behind me. Which could take 20, 30 minutes where I live especially at night additionally research and studies have proven the other part of my comment: cyclists treating red lights as stop signs drastically increase their survival rate and reduce crashes and delays for cars. However it's a bit of a moot point as cyclists shouldn't be dealing with car-centric traffic lights in the first place.
1
u/ChrisKearney3 11h ago
I agree that cyclists should stop at the red light. That's non-negotiable. But I have no problem if they then choose to safety proceed if there's no cars or pedestrians around.
2
u/BenjaminBogey 8h ago
The problem with this is that ppl don’t always spot that pedestrian making a late dash for the lights. And also, safely proceed to you might mean waiting until there’s no pedestrians anywhere near the lights, to the next person it means proceeding through a gap in pedestrians crossing the road. Just wait that extra 3 seconds for your green light!
0
u/Intergalatic_Baker Londoner, inside ULEZ 9h ago
So let’s apply that last bit to cars then, cos if there’s no one around, then I shouldn’t have to bother waiting, cos it’s my judgment it’s safe.
•
u/KAYAWS 57m ago
This isn't really a good argument. Cyclists going through a red is closer to pedestrians crossing on a red man (which people do not really have a problem with) than it is a car running a red light.
Signalised junctions also only exist because of cars and we wouldn't need signals if it was just bikes and pedestrians. Being in a big metal box really hinders visibility and also the risks of a collision with far greater than those with a bike. If you look at a junction like Northchurch Terrace and Culford road, there are no traffic controls needed there because cars are not allowed. Cyclists and pedestrians just get on with it there as they can safely mix with one another.
1
u/ChrisKearney3 6h ago
Yes. That's how it works in Australia for left turns.
-1
u/Intergalatic_Baker Londoner, inside ULEZ 6h ago
Is that why you've a higher roads fatality rate than the UK...
1
u/ChrisKearney3 11h ago
Exactly this. There's running red lights and there's going ahead with caution. The courier bikes I see on Bishopsgate just barrelling along not even looking to see if anything is coming are wildly different from someone taking a clear left turn early to avoid getting cut up by the cars behind.

u/Conscious_Koala_6519 12h ago
I mean great ...meanwhile... Idiots on e bike in balaclavas tear up high streets and town centres and the police can't stop them for toffee
17
u/Intergalatic_Baker Londoner, inside ULEZ 12h ago
Different police force. This is City of London, not Metropolitan. Very different force and much more resources for these sort of things.

-1
u/Conscious_Koala_6519 11h ago
Priorities are wild
2
u/eyebrows360 schnarf schnarf 10h ago
Yes, you prioritising something that doesn't happen much, compared to the incredibly widespread practice of red light running, is indeed wild. Maybe if we can start a campaign to get more black cyclists to run red lights, then you'll start to consider clamping down on it a priority?
2
u/Conscious_Koala_6519 10h ago
Eh? I said e bikes and balaclavas... Do you live anywhere near a good amount of places where this happening .
Whilst that arguments against me are clear .. I am not making an argument.. it is obviously conflicting priorities..
But it doesn't negate differing needs.. if people are concerns about the behaviour I have mentioned in a number of areas as opposed to a cyclist being a bit cheeky .. then most of them won't ruin..or intentionally ruin someone's day..
I'm not arguing something deep here.. I do get the importance
0
u/EitherChannel4874 10h ago
Just fine them. They'll jump back on the bikes and straight through the next red light.
Rules are for everyone.
0
u/Electronic_Curve8195 8h ago
for real why should I stop at red lights? I'm not saying blast through them but if you've checked it's safe you can work your way over a junction. No one's in any danger, people who moan about it are just jealous motorists
2
u/Intergalatic_Baker Londoner, inside ULEZ 8h ago
So we should just trust your judgement is sound to make the calculations between gaps in the traffic? Difference is a Car has a numberplate, you don't.
2
u/0100001101110111 7h ago
Cars are larger, heavier, faster and have worse visibility and agility. Jumping a red on a bike vs car is completely different lol
0
u/Intergalatic_Baker Londoner, inside ULEZ 7h ago
Yeah, the bike has no ID tied to it's owner and address and cannot be sent NIPs or Court Summons by the post... But it's fine for you to ignore The Highway Code written for everyone's safety, not just you.
0
u/Electronic_Curve8195 7h ago
I trust my own judgment so I do it. You don't have to trust my judgment I'm not going out into traffic but I'll cross junctions when it's clear.
You're spot on about the numberplates though. If cars didn't get fined they'd go over too when it was safe and a lot of the anger at cyclists is just jealousy.
2
u/Intergalatic_Baker Londoner, inside ULEZ 7h ago
Jealous that you're constantly saying how dangerous they are as you ignore The Highway Code because your judgement is sacrosanct and everyone else has to wait for the electricity to light up a green bulb...

Because cyclists should remain amongst the HGVs moving off, not ahead of them.
-5
u/Intergalatic_Baker Londoner, inside ULEZ 10h ago
They’re always behind an HGV, whether the one that went through earlier or the one that’s at the same lights. Obey the Highway Code.

So section 59 without warning seizures of cars for making a little bit of noise, watch a video for lethal cyclists.

Dramatic much
0
u/Salt-Plankton436 9h ago edited 9h ago
What's dramatic?
Unsure whether the downvotes are triggered Londoners who shake their fists at the noisy bikes and welcome draconian measures to make those people disappear or they're genuinely unaware that the police can now seize your car without warning for something as innocuous as downshifting, all while cyclists blast through red lights with no seizures and 97% of car thefts many of which involve home invasions are unpunished.
