Took me a long time to install Gentoo and configure it... and a week to figure out the audio.

Because preparing such distributions, completing their installation, getting everything ready, and using them on a daily basis is difficult. Troubleshooting issues is even harder.

These distributions may prove challenging for users who prefer a simple installation process and wish to avoid using the command line or similar tools—specifically those whose primary activities include browsing the internet, listening to music, watching movies, opening office documents, or playing games, and who would rather not have to consult wikis or conduct research to find information.

In my view, the level of difficulty increases in the following order:

Arch Linux
Void Linux
NixOS
Alpine Linux
Slackware
Gentoo
Linux From Scratch

I switched from win10 to Plasma a few months ago, and with the default settings, everything was basically the exact same, but everything is way more customizable, so I've slowly been diverging from the defaults, keeping parts I like, and finding options I like better. Just today, I found out that I can set it to have multiple rows of virtual desktops, so I've been experimenting trying to find a good way to arrange my virtual desktops in a 2D space.

I was bored on a random weekend and decided to make this, now a few weeks later I got the idea of posting this shit. I've been using linux on my main device since 1.Jan.2025. Loving it

Two days ago this sub saw a porn viewer pitched as “written in Rust”, and half the comments were about vibe-coded Rust rewrites.

So naturally I (claude code) made another one.

• 100% Rust (video decoding is GStreamer and the database is SQLite, both C, please don’t tell anyone)
• Local-first: offline by default, no account, no telemetry, your files stay where they are (online soon....)
• Linux is the main platform. Windows and macOS compile but have never touched real hardware, which feels very on brand for this sub
