I've been working on a game called War of the Worlds Trilogy, and there is a Linux version. It still not completely polished by the game is 100% there, now its time for feedback.
Before I release the full demo on Steam, I wanted to get some early feedback from people. So here are 20 Steam Keys for the demo. If you take a key, please leave it in the comments to which key you took and have fun. If really want to play the demo early and didn't get a key, just message me.
There are ways to play the game that tell the story from different perspectives:
Story Mode: First person survival game where you play as the narrator trying to survive the 21 days.
Martian Vanguard: Play the Martians in a military mech game that come to "conquer" earth. My person favorite because of the story depth.
City Builder: Run a city, build it up for 31 days and then try to survive 21 days of onslaught.
Hey there! I’m Iván, from Mexico and Spain. English isn’t my first language, so sorry if something sounds weird.
I’m building MUN right now, an independent game console, in public. It’s my project and it’s still a prototype. What does that mean? no final hardware yet... The system shell runs in QEMU while I test ARM boards. It is becoming very difficult to find something that is good, attractive, affordable, and unique lol.
The OS is Debian based, ARM64 and Vulkan. The idea is simple: turn it on and play native Linux games, with games on physical cards that work offline. although I'm considering a way to have a store or something similar with the same qualities.
I’d love your honest opinion:
What breaks most for you when gaming on Linux ARM?
Console-style only, or should there be an easy desktop mode?
If you have both CachyOS and Windows on your PC and you have set up secure boot for CachyOS following the wiki, and you go back to windows and play a game that has secure boot requirements such as Call of Duty, Battlefield 6 or whatever, is there any risk of getting banned due to the custom setup of secure boot for CachyOS?
I've recently switched to Arch Linux and everything works great except one thing: in every game I play i have huge fps drops for no reason (even Roblox or older games like Battlefield 4), my tests showed that despite fps dropping from 60 to 30 constantly my gpu and cpu don't even exceed 60% so it's not because of my specs. I've already tried everything for example: switching to lts kernel, switching amd power mode to high, downgrading drivers, switching proton versions or amd power saving modes. No matter what I do I can't resolve this issue and it's making every game unplayable.
My specs:
AMD 7800XT
i5 12600kf
32 GB ram 3200Mhz
And both of my discs are SSD
6.18.56-1-lts kernel
(screenshot from Silent Hill 2, i didn't do a video because gpu cpu and vram usage is always the same for some reason)
Previously, Counter-Strike 2 demos could not be downloaded in linux from within the game. The loading circle would spin for a while and then gives an error. Now, demos can be downloaded from within the game.
After not having a PC for around 5 years, I am planning a following Linux-based build, mostly for gaming in 1440p and FSR4 or native 4K where possible (apart from doing some nerdy software engineering stuff):
For the CPU, I impulsively ordered AMD R7 9800 X3D after watching reviews on it, AFTER I already ordered 9700 X which I initially planned as a "best before diminishing returns". Perhaps this was not a good bet, but I wanted to stick to AM5 and Zen 5 to simplify upgrading in the future. 9700 X was 259 euros, and 9800 X3D - 407 euros. I haven't done a good research on the CPUs and was mostly focused on the GPU, I knew I wanted to go a full AMD build, and the CPU did not feel like a bottleneck, but seeing a massive difference in some reviews (e.g. Gamers Nexus) got me thinking that I made a mistake.
However, I realized that most of the reviews revealing massive differences in CPU performance in gaming are based on 1080p for a reason - going to higher resolutions and better presets makes the same scenarios they show more GPU bound and the performance difference does not look that dramatic anymore.
In hindsight, after I cooled down a bit, I realized that I'd probably be satisfied with 9700 X, and going that much higher feels like the actual diminishing returns - I am afraid that I won't be able to see the difference in most of the scenarios.
Do you think it's reasonable to stick with 9800 X3D and send 9700 X back, or better save this money for the future upgrades, like adding more RAM or selling 9700 X and upgrading the processor in a generation or two? Or maybe just ordering a new Steam Controller and keeping a fifty.
I'm not optimistic, but I wouldn't be surprised if this actually leads to some change. Imagine getting flooded with complaints because people can't play Fortnite because of your hardware. You don't wanna be that guy.
So i dont know if its a common issue at the moment but when tabbing out of games after the most recent client update some people including me have had the game freeze requiring it be closed and reopened to fix it.
Now another user figured out turning off steam overlay fixes the issue which is great but i still reported the issue to valve as you do but i revived this in response which i found interesting and thought i should share.
So just so you know it is impossible to play those games on linux according to steam.
A huge update to the game was dropped today with loads of balance changes and bug fixes, but after the update the game no longer loads for me on linux. Ive tried several proton versions and common tweaks to no avail. The game worked just fine before, but Im a little peeved because I havent even finished my first campaign yet and now cant play the game anymore.
Anyone else experiencing this issue? Has anyone resolved it? Is the game just borked for linux and steam deck users now? Im very sad because Ive been loving this game to death.
One thing up front, since this sub asks: AI helped write the code. The design decisions and every pixel of the art are mine, and I would rather say so plainly than have someone find out later. I build Bitiverse on my own - a persistent pixel-art MMO that runs in a browser tab, with native Windows, Linux and Android builds alongside it.
This week's build spreads the game's three orders across the map: the bonesetters work frostovercrest now, the high ledger runs out of westhold, and the verdant circle sits in thorncrest. Each hall has its door beside its city's square, its own city's work to hand out, its recruiters left behind in town as envoys, and a notice that names the city your hall moved to rather than leaving you to guess.
Beyond the orders there's the rest of the game: one shared persistent world, a player economy with market stalls and shops you price yourself, homesteads you build (and dig a dungeon beneath), books you write and bind for public shelves, and a weekly gazette the players write themselves.
It is free, needs no download, and a guest does not need an account to walk in. There are bugs I have not met yet - testers who enjoy finding them are exactly what I am short of. Come break it: https://fortisq.itch.io/bitiverse
I first time tried Linux in June this year. There are so many new interesting things to learn, one of them is about playing Windows games on Linux.
I tried some, such as: Heroic Games Launcher, Lutris, Bottles.
All of them are pretty good, but tbh the best to me is Bottles.
Bottles gives me the best performance, even though I run the same runners in other programs, Bottles still give me the best performance - for every games that I tried, from old to newer games.
The defining feature of Bottles—which most people knows about—is that each "bottle" is an isolated environment.
This helps me so much, I can make experiments without touching my old bottles.
I'm currently applying this to make two bottles that used for new games and old games (Windows XP compatibility)
One more thing that I like about Bottles that it has a lot of runners to use.
Do you guys usually use Bottles or like it? I would like to hear your opinions 😄
Razer's about to be flooded with complaints that people can't play Fortnite because of their mice. You You don't want to be THAT guy.
Laptop got Broadcom WiFi and needs out of tree drivers? Oh boy, you just made it impossible for many to play Fortnite. Now you either have to use Intel next time or pay Broadcom millions to finally support Linux.
I wouldn't say I'm cautiously optimistic, but I am cautiously HOPING.
Once the files are downloaded you need to put the script that I created inside the folder.
Then install the game using the .yml script in lutris.
Normally after it finished installing if you use the right version of wine it should work straight away.
Optimization
In Runner Options :
DXVK, VKD3D, D3D EXTRAS, DXVK-NVAPI Enabled (It may be on by default I don't remember it's in the runner options)
I enabled Fsync disabled Esync (also in runner option just lower)
In System Options :
Enable Feral Gamemode (if you have it.)
In environment variable you need to set this :
Look lower to copy paste.
DXVK Environment Variables
DXVK_ASYNC = 1
What it does: Enables asynchronous shader compilation (glorious-eggroll's GPL patch or older DXVK-async builds).
Effect: Prevents micro-stutters and hitching while exploring new areas in a game as new shaders load. Instead of freezing to compile a shader, missing textures/effects might briefly pop in without dropping your frame rate.
DXVK_FRAME_RATE = 60
What it does: Sets an internal frame rate cap at 60 FPS through DXVK directly.
Effect: Keeps frame pacing smooth and saves GPU/CPU resources without needing external frame limiters or V-Sync.
What it does: Forces DXVK to store its compiled DirectX-to-Vulkan state cache files in this custom folder path instead of the default location.
Effect: Keeps your shader caches organized or stored on a specific drive/folder (in this case, inside the Project Reality game directory).
dxvk.numCompilerThreads = 4
What it does: Restricts DXVK shader compilation to use 4 CPU threads max.
Effect: Prevents DXVK from maxing out 100% of your CPU when compiling shaders, keeping your system responsive or leaving CPU cores free for the game process itself.
dxvk.tearFree = False
What it does: Disables DXVK's built-in tear-free presentation layer when V-Sync is off.
Effect: Slightly reduces input latency/lag, though screen tearing may occur if V-Sync is disabled in-game.
dxvk.useOldClearValueControl = 1
What it does: A legacy compatibility fix flag for DXVK.
Effect: Resolves specific rendering glitches or black/broken graphical artifacts in older games running on modern Vulkan drivers.
Audio Variable
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC = 90
What it does: Forces PulseAudio (or PipeWire-Pulse) to request a 90ms audio buffer delay.
Effect: Fixes crackling, popping, or stuttering audio in Wine/Proton games, particularly older multiplayer mods or games like Project Reality.
In the game options :
Yes I put it in 800x600 it give me the best performance.
You can disable fullscreen if sometimes the image freeze and put it in borderless.
And that's it! I might have forgotten something write a comment and I'll help. See you in battle!
Hi, I switched from windows to linux (mint). I only play one video game on Steam and it is Subnautica (the first one). I checked beforehand and it was supposed to run on linux, but it doesn’t. It is stuck on the warning screen at the beginning (warning for flashing lights) and no matter how long I wait it doesnt seem to be running. It was working on windows perfectly fine before. I have a newer thinkpad. Do you have a suggestion how I could make it run?
I am an optiscaler user and I can't get Antilag 2 working. Framelimiter in optiscaler only work with ENABLE_LAYER_MESA_ANTI_LAG=1, but framepacing with this is awful. With LOW_LATENCY_LAYER=1 antilag doesn't even work it seems cuz latency stays the same and limiter doesn't work, but optiscaler shows that it uses antilag. Is there any other options or am I doing it
Is this something that needs to be fixed by otiscaler devs or by someone else?
I have this problem where the loading time is 8-10 minutes long, when loading the game or teleporting somewhere, it doesn't happen with GE-Proton but that recently stopped working cuz the game updated their anti-cheat, I'm launching the game via steam, tried with the NTSync command but still it takes a lot of time to load the game, is it because the game runs on vulkan?
I find it crazy that no one is talking about it. I can't find anything on the internet about this.
For example, this is what launching Fate/stay night REMASTERED under Wine/Proton does :
It opens like 20 different audio outputs for different audio parts of the game, whereas on Windows you'd get a single slider for the game as a whole. Good luck finding out which one is about the music for example.
I haven't found any way to properly fix this problem.
So I finally decided to upgrade to fedora 44 but I've noticed that since doing so, I've had my system just randomly freeze up and kick me back to my login screen when I'm gaming. Some games it's sooner, some it's later. This didn't happen prior to the upgrade and now I'm lamenting it. I'm honestly unsure but from what I've read online from others, it seems linked to a possible vram issue. Ive tried making sure everything is updated and to allocate enough vram but nothing seems to work. I'm admittedly still kind of a linux novice so I'm of ideas and really frustrated. Unsure if anyone has any pointers or things I can try to fix this.
I'm on, well, fedora 44, using a radeon 7900 xt. I'm not really sure what toher information is needed but I'll provide whatever I can if it fixes this.
