General Discussion MDH Unlock, Achievement Grind, and Long-Term Impact

TL;DR - Floor unlocks should be staggered, and MD rewards should increase with more floors cleared.

Let me explain.

With the newest Mirror Dungeon hours away, we once again arrive at the inevitable discourse: new players needing even more work to reach MD Hard mode. While obviously the investment needed to reach is disheartening itself, there's a much bigger concern gameplay-wise that's coming up. Because sure, earlier bosses can mostly be handled with a few decent IDs and a single Support, but more and more, Limbus content is evolving around specific Sinners and limited encounters. MD Hard unlocking after Canto IX especially, where so many fights are based on such a small number of IDs, is going to be a major account check going forward.

The other common complaint against Mirror Dungeon is that it's too grindy. This goes both for new players, having to grind 3 MD Normal a week when MD Hard is actually faster per run, and late-game players trying to enjoy their weekly farm. This is because, once you get a decent rotation of teams, Floors 1-5 become a slog. The same beginning floors, the same grind for the fusion gifts, ramping up your team faster than the bosses can manage. A good example of this issue is in the "Clear 50 Mirror Dungeons" achievement. For me, this achievement wasn't annoying because I couldn't manage 50 MD Runs. It felt annoying because it was encouraging me to end all my runs on Floor 5, starting again rather than enjoying the higher difficulty, secret bosses, and full potential of a team. Which leads me to my personal biggest problem with MD Hard.

Other than Big Numbers and Self-Challenge, there is no incentive to continue beyond Floor 5.

The system rewards you for finishing before the challenge can properly ramp, before your maxed-out team can fully come together, and before the challenging content that requires more engagement with the game itself. It instead encourages the same beginning cycle that half the teams in the game could probably winrate through. And again, it makes the ones who have almost everything do it once, while the beginners still catching up do it thrice. Which is why, I believe, MD progression and rewards should be staggered. Let me present:

The Mirror Dungeon Gradual Unlock System

-MD Normal unlocking after Canto II is perfectly fine. You really don't need much to clear the beginning of this game.

-MD Hard (1-5) unlocks much earlier. Maybe between Cantos IV and VI, honestly. It's still a work, but new players get access sooner and before chain battles and fights that truly test your full roster unlock

-MD Hard (6-10) unlocks separately, for now where we are currently, but as more Cantos come, I can see this being locked maybe around the end of Inferno? Clearing to Floor 10 should also yield increased rewards, definitely more crates. This would encourage players to invest more in a single, more difficult run, instead of multiple boring ones. This could also reduce the sheer numerical grind of some of these achievements.

-MDE (11-15) should be linked to clearing the latest Canto, at least for the foreseeable future. While new content and the ever-increasing disparity between Secret Bosses (Dad Quixote vs Matthias, and it'll only get worse), extra floors are probably an inevitability, but not for a while. I also don't think that extra crates are as good an idea for MDE, because a full Floor 15 run every week is a very tall order for players who just caught up with maybe 1-2 solid teams to rotate through.

But that's just the thoughts of one person with no experience in game design who wants their MD Grind to be a little more fulfilling.

General Discussion ...was this really necessary though?

I spent 10 minutes wondering if I was going through a Mandela effect when I noticed Kodion's sprite somehow looked off and I was right,it's her deep tears.Listen to each their own but I do not want the "It's over here" charge markers on the unique charge logos, people were already crying that they weren't unique enough and now they got even more ammunition to use.

I mean I do remember plenty and I mean plenty of posts just on Reddit alone complaining that they had no idea an Id was also charge, especially when QoH Don and Kodion dropped as they started the trend,I think... emphasis on think.I was soo happy to avoid the bland charge logos just for it to be copy and pasted over the unique ones.Just a personal gripe and not that much of a difference other than preference really...I just wish they make it a turn off/on setting, you know?

Canto X Spoiler A plothole of the GMS Liquidation system that I haven't seen anyone mention or notice Spoiler

Is that how did anyone revives after a liquidation? They mention that after maman died nobody revives anymore after their death in the GMS, and that's why a lot more people get the sysphe penalty. But then on liquidation everyone who died or we killed revives after that. This also not to mention that the liquidation system is *not* a time reversal, rather than a memory wipe to a point where it feels like a time reversal. Did someone else took the place of somebody else after the original died? I know that for the canon route, we probably didn't kill anyone that is not trying to attack us, but there are people who actually died in canon: L'inmovable, the rouge brand manager who died two times on A and B route, and somehow revives back on the C route and even managed to get out of sysphe

Game Content Yeah sure very unique yall(atleast rodion have fixed potency) can we have actual unique charge like other unique statuses(for example L'Abject max 5 count, more damage from rouge, gain bleed count and bind) is it unreasonable to ask for that or am i going to get shot for not wanting reskin slop

Future Speculation I've conciebed a 'most genious theory about donquijote (and library of ruina??)

Post image
3 Upvotes

So, in the book "don quijote" , he decides to pick up on being a knight after becoming fucking obsessed with a book called "tirant lo blanc", he liked that book so much that after sanson, the priest, dulcinea, and the others (not sancho ofc) end up tragically burning his knightly books, (you coukd say his library got ruined, hehhe) he just decided to save that book, that one book in specific, cause he liked it so much.

The book's literal translation is "pulling the white" so I mean all I'm saying is that it could just either be a brand-new notorious knightly colour fixer that we will see is probably as obsessed with jussis as quijote. Don quijote's and the group's saviour if they ever decide to adapt the whole "buring the library". Which wait, holy fuck could it be the library of ruina? I literally never thougt of this, shit, it would be soo cool if they did that, i mean they did it already with the GMS.

Or my personal favourite theory, and that is that donnquijote's coloured fixer name (if she ever becomes one) will be "pulling the white", as a reference to the book, and the fact that she doesn't need the bloodfiend buffs to be a 'most notorious color fixer!!!!

General Discussion Why didn’t Sinclair get ren’s rend space move?

Thumbnail
gallery
125 Upvotes

There’s logically no real reason he couldn’t get this move

“Ren was only able to learn it on his death bed” Sinclair’s whole thing is being talented and special. Of course he would be able to learn something that a Normie like ren could only learn on his death bed

The move wouldn’t make him too op either. He’s the only apprentice that doesn’t get any buffs at all from his “nursefather” being present. The only thing she does for him is save him for last. Poise focused units are notoriously underpowered as well since they’re single focused units in a team game. So they’re good generally units but nothing more

With rend space-azureslash he’d have some claim to fame.

The only reason I can think of is that we’re going to get a renclair part two with the move since renclair’s death is unconfirmed

Future Speculation I don’t like the Udjat Outis theory

The main reasons are that I find it really unlikely and I don’t really see what narrative purpose it would serve. Firstly, Outis couldn’t have been part of the Udjat during the smoke war. We know she was some sort of commander and Moses was the captain of the Udjat during the smoke war. She could’ve been Moses’ subordinate but it wouldn’t make sense for her to not recognize Moses. Something I think a lot of people forget is Moses recognizes Outis, not the other way around. Outis shows no recognition of her until Moses directly brings up the smoke war at which point it’s unclear if there’s any deeper recognition from Outis or if she merely knows they’re both war veterans. Yes the Udjat wear masks but she should’ve at least recognized her voice unless they also used voice changers but that’s an incredibly excessive degree of secrecy to have with your own soldiers.

Secondly, all the Udjat who participated in the smoke war are dead except Moses, Ezra and Han Hee-joon. There could be some explanations for why Outis didn’t recognize Moses (no matter how weak I find them to be) but there’s no getting around this. The only explanation I can conceive of is there being an entire sub section of the Udjat with no connection to Moses but that’d still be incredibly strange because Dias had no reason to distrust her at the time.

This leaves the only time period she could’ve been part of the Udjat the years between the end of the smoke war and her joining Limbus Company. We really have no idea what she was doing during this time period but I’d find it really strange for her to have an Udjat identity before her canto if she was part of them. Especially when said identity shows zero prior knowledge of the Udjat.

Finally, beyond a connection with Dias I don’t really see the point of it. She doesn’t need to have been a part of the Udjat to have a connection with Dias. Dias is the one of the instigators of the first smoke war while also being one of the richest individuals we’ve seen in the city. Outis doesn’t need to have been part of her own personal army to have a connection with her.

General Discussion Feelings about next Walpergisnacht

Since we all know Walpergis should be coming some time soon and I've seen a few posts speculating on it, I'm curious what everyone's thoughts wants and preferences are about what we could get.

Also I feel the need to explain what I've put forward as the top two options so:

Crimson and Cobalt Scar:

Following the pre-established pattern we should be visiting the Disciplinary Department (unless we stop by Central Command again first which is entirely possible) and Red and The Wolf are two fan favorite abnormalities associated with it. Gameplay wise they could act as pseudo-noir and pseudo-rouge IDs respectively and could have some fun interactions with the new duality mechanic. Thematically Red falls a little short (deriving meaning of one's in relation to another? but that feels a little weak to me) The Wolf however being about caving to societal expectations would be a perfect fit. (Also Heathcliff is on deck for the next Walp drop and is currently second longest without something new and has a clear connection)

Gaze and Heaven:

Admittedly this is mostly just for thematic reasons but the abnormalities about gazing at and desiring the gaze of others are something of a slam dunk this season and I'd be surprised if we don't get anything related to one of them at some point. Pattern wise there's not much connection, Burrowing Heaven being Hokma's (but it is a Carmen abno so) and Schadenfreude I think being Yesod's at one point? On a gameplay level I'm not sure how they'd fit beyond being charge but they could interact with targeting in a fun way and include duality that way.

Canto X Spoiler For those who have fought that one boss after the nerf, did you win with the passive condition, or reducing their health to zero? Spoiler

After Buffet was nerfed, I started a new run and used Burn Tremor to see if it's still viable to win with the alternate win condition, stacking 5 Memories to win.

Boss died after 3 Memories.

What about you guys? I am asking specifically people who have beaten the boss post-nerf to see if people get to see the 5 Memories cutscene, or if they breeze through the boss now.

Canto X Spoiler On The Chaplain, The Banality Of Evil, and Portrayal (Canto X Spoilers) Spoiler

So, as many of you probably have noticed, the Chaplain has gained Memetic Fame as "The GOAT" as of late. Now, while some people recognize that this is a joke and the dude is a horrible person, others seem to either take it seriously or believe people take it seriously and don't "get" the Chaplain. Or at least what he's supposed to represent.

I felt like talking about it. To be clear, I want to talk about one of the reasons why the Meme exists and how the portrayal of something in a story will effect peoples' reaction to it. I'm not here to say anyone's dumb for "Misunderstanding" or say I'm smart because I "Get It". Nor am I here to say PM did a "bad job" with their storytelling or anything like that. I'm just here to put forth my thoughts.

TL:WR: When you make someone represent the Banality Of Evil, then show that said Banality had a reason/point to it, you end up making people side with them. Jokingly or not.

To not go on too long winded a rant, Maurice the Chaplain is meant to represent the general Banality of Evil we see in The City all the time. He's your typical N-Corp Employee who wants to just clock out, go home, come back to work, clock in, and repeat day in and day out. He supports and wants to uphold the current system, because he believes without it, everything will go to shit. Everyone will immediately go towards barbarism, N Corp will start attacking other Wings/Backstreets, and things will be taken over by Kromer's Hammer Faction. Yes, the GMS is also, barbaric, but it's one he and many others can stomach because the people being affected are "Bad People" who "Deserve it". And we all know who N Corp views as "Bad People" (Cough Dubois Cough).

Maurice and those like him are fine with how horrible the GMS is, because they believe something even more horrible will happen without it. They refuse to even imagine that it could not be as bad they say it is.

Now, this is not a new story beat/theme. Many stories in the past have touched on this idea and it will continue to be touched on as long as humans continue to create stories. However, the difference between this one and most other stories that tackle this theme is how it's resolved.

In most stories that tackle this theme, the person upholding the Banality of Evil is proven wrong. The system collapses and they have to now confront the future without it. They look around and...nothing happens. People don't fall into barbarity. People don't immediately collapse without knowing what to do. Or, someone manages to pick up the pieces and help guide people to a better future. Something happens to prove that the system wasn't necessary. That it was fully evil and could've been destroyed at any moment without issue. That there was no need for it. That the people who upheld it were wrong.

But...Canto X doesn't do that.

Because...Maurice turns out to be right.

The GMS goes down and within a few days:

- Distortions are all over the place killing people and causing mass hysteria within N Corp.

- Kromer's Faction takes control and the Board of Directors immediately goes along with the idea of returning to sending out people to extract experience via Nails to the brain.

- Gregor's Mom's faction gets exactly what they want and are able to advance their plans even further.

- A new Smoke War is on the horizon and liable to be even worse than the last one.

Basically, the people upholding the Banality of Evil were shown to have been right. The second the system goes down, barbarism and chaos is everywhere. People fall back on their baser instincts. The people who gain control are crazy and want more barbarism. The system is/was still evil...but you begin to think that maybe it WAS a necessary evil.

Were they still assholes upholding a broken system? Yes, but the alternative hasn't proven itself to be better so far. When the alternative to the system is presented as worse than the system, people will side with the system. Lesser of two evils and all that. Yeah, you could argue the Smoke is Maurice's fault for frying all those Distortions, but there was no way he could've known what was going to happen if he did that. Same as how we didn't know things would this bad just from rescuing Meursault and getting the Golden Bough.

Now, we're likely going to have an Intervallo that expands on what's going on right now. Maybe they'll show that things aren't that bad and Maurice was actually overreacting. That N Corp will survive and Kromer's Faction won't be as bad as he thought. Or it'll show that things ARE that bad, and Maurice will go down as "Mr. Was Totally Right" because of it. We won't know until it comes out.

The key thing I'm trying to convey here is that, using the current context and circumstances, it is totally understandable WHY people would say Maurice was right, even if he is supposed to represent the Banality of Evil. Does that MAKE him right, or make him a good guy? Hell no. He's a bastard like everyone else like him.

BUT the current way the tearing down of the Banality of Evil is portrayed, makes him seem that way.
