For my science, biomedical lefties, or lefties in fields that require tools of any sort. Curious if you have your own special tools.

Side note: I learned during covid that circular saws are not lefty friendly lol I didn’t lose a limb or digit but it was for sure a dangerous experience

Looking for a new left handed ergonomic mouse

Hey everyone

I've been using a Logitech LIFT for quite some time now, but the clicks have been faulty for quite a while now. I rawdogged working and playing games with it, but I honestly can't take it anymore. Having to giggle it and forcing clicks if I ever push it so slightly to have the switches align perfectly and not get stuck (very common issue with it) is getting really annoying. But... The LIFT is kind of our best option right?

I tried to check the web for a while to find another one, I missed the DELUX one which I might have gone for as I've had a keypad of theirs for 10 years now... Do you have any option? I'm kind of lost right now

For your right hand only

I confused said, "How is one even supposed to be able to drink out of that one?" before I realised that it was a right-hand mug. Not my proudest moment.

A bit of a strange design for righthanders, too. Held in your right hand, you can only see the tail. And you need to reach around to get the biscuit or whatever you keep in the little trough.

In their class they have to work up to a handwriting pen from pencil. He has always had always now he's paranoid about smudges. He wants to wants smudge it on purpose.

Pen Recommendation

Pentel’s EnerGel Liquid Gel Ink (I‘m specifically using Needle Tip / 0.7). I’ve got no affiliation with the brand, here; I don’t work for them or anything. I just found a couple of these pens in my office’s supply closet.

And… no smearing! Writes smooth, good dark lines. But seriously: no smearing!

Fellow lefties, do with this info what you will.

If left handed people were the majority, would that affect how we write and letters as a whole?

I tend to think that if we were the majority,we would someway invent a very practical approach that suits our handedness.

Would what is now mirror writing be the new method of writing to avoid smudges, unhook out hands or tilting the book. An upright writing for us means from right to left,so even with the current alphabets or numerals it would be really hard to write comfortably or quicker, so we might need to invent a different way that suits us.

One thing I learned about mice

So, I’ve always used my right hand for certain things. One of them being using a mouse. I didn’t know that some people using their left hand and buy left handed mice. It honestly makes it easier because I can take notes with my left hand and scroll with my right. I bought an ergonomic mouse and I was looking at TikTok’s and I’d always see people asking if they make ones for lefties. I always assumed we all used ones for righties. I didn’t even know they made left handed mice until this week😭

How many of you guys use left handed mice?

Small Annoyances

A whine. I recently bought an adjustable long handled litter scooper from Chewy. Cool tool to keep from having to bend over to scoop the box. Pull out to desired length and then turn the handle left to tighten in place. Turn right to loosen and adjust length. But when you are a lefty dumping litter to the right, with every scoop you loosen the handle til the scoop turns by itself and dumps out the litter everywhere. Sigh. Probably the reason my adjustable rakes and other tools are always loosening.

Do you guys have this difficulty with cursive?

I’m a rightie who’s working on her left-handed writing. When I write with my right hand, I can write a whole long word without lifting my pen off the paper. With my left hand, I need to lift my pen and move my hand to the right before continuing.

I wonder whether this is because I’m not yet as proficient at writing with my left hand, or whether it’s something left-handed people commonly struggle with. After all, when you write with your left hand, you’re pushing the nib forward across the paper rather than pulling it along behind your hand, as a rightie does. I wonder whether that’s part of the problem.

Do you experience this too? Any tips that could help me improve would be greatly appreciated!

Handedness and Miming

In "Who's minding the Store" (1963) Jerry Lewis performs the legendary Typewriter Sketch, originally a musical piece written for Typewriter and Orchestra.

Here's the thing that never occurred to me before: At the end of a line, when the bell rings and the Carriage has to be manually reset to the beginning of the next line, Jerry performs that motion with his right hand, motioning towards the left.

But in reality the carriage moves from right to left and therefore the Carriage-Return-Lever is located on the left.

In earlier performances, like this one from 1954, while using a Typewriter as a prop, he still used his left hand for the return.

And even in a later performance, sitting over an electric typewriter that no longer has a Return-Lever, he still used the lefthanded motion.

I found my problem…

I’ve very rarely struggled with being a lefty. Sure I had one problem teacher in high school, figured out how to adapt to school desks but I’ve never really had a huge problem.

Went to a wedding recently and they put 11 people at a table (that was also against a beam) that really should have only seated 8 and we all had food that required cutting. My husband was completely unaware that he needed to tuck his elbow in while cutting his steak and the woman on my other side was practically in my lap. I was ready to just stab my steak with a fork, push back and eat it that way.
