Welcome to r/ledzeppelin!

Welcome to r/ledzeppelin! This is a community for fans of the famous 1970's rock band to get together and discuss the mighty Zep and related topics.

With the recent boom in users of the sub, we thought it necessary to make a little post establishing a few ground rules for newer users.

1. Play nice.

We typically don't have issues with this, however it never hurts to be clear. Don't insult others for their opinions. If you disagree with somebody, never be afraid to have calm, rational discussions. Respect one another and don't take disagreements personally, we're all here simply because we have a common interest and enjoy discussing it. We aren't here to start arguments and get pissy with one another.

2. Disallowed posts

With all the newer users that continue to join, we get quite a bit of reposts often within a 2 week period of each other. For the convenience of all users of the sub and to prevent flooding, there are a few posts we ask that you either look up prior to making your post, or simply refer to the links we offer here. In other words, if you think your post may be fairly generic, look up your title and set it to the past month to see if a post like this was recently posted. The specific posts we're referring to are as follow: I'm new, where should I start? and What do you guys think of Greta Van Fleet?

If you're new and would like some recommendations, I'd recommend reading the replies of this post and this post. Both feature a plethora of replies from members of the sub who give great recommendations.

Wanna know what people think of GVF? Look up "Greta Van Fleet" in the sidebar. I can assure you, there's no shortage of opinions shared and topics discussed. As you can see here, we quite unanimously said we were done discussing the topic.

That's it for the rules. We try not to be too anal in regards of rules and such, just practice common reddiquette and everything's generally pretty chill.

Here are some other useful links for newer users looking to get into the reddit:

Bootlegs/Concerts:

Many users of the reddit are avid fans of listening to live Led Zeppelin in depth through bootlegs. If you're a casual fan, this may not be for you. However, if you love discussing the music in great depth and you feel you can enjoy listening to music through less-than-ideal quality audio, this is certainly for you.

Forum sites:

These are good places for hard-core Zeppheads to discuss the band in-depth, whether it be live performances or behind the scenes details.

Survivor Polls:

Links to the results of a few polls conducted on the sub over the past year or so.

I almost met Robert Plant last night

So I was home last night making dinner. Just as I was pulling the delightful frozen pizza from the oven my daughter called. She said she and her boyfriend were at Bryant Lake Bowl (a local bowling alley here in Minneapolis). They were 90% certain that Robert Plant was there bowling.

At first I scoffed. But she insisted and as we talked her boyfriend chimed in that he was positive that indeed it was Mr Robert Plant.

My heart raced. Led Zeppelin was the first band I obsessed over. The first vinyl I bought was Led Zeppelin III. A couple years later it was the same album I chose as my first CD purchase in 1989. They were foundational in my life and inspired my love of great music.

So I abandoned my dinner and took off in my truck to get there and possibly *fingers crossed* snag a picture with Mr Plant.

Along the way my daughter called, warning me to hurry as it looked like Mr Plant and his entourage were getting ready to leave.

I floored it.

I scored a parking spot right on Lake Street in front of Bryant Lake Bowl. Yes!

I calmly raced into the bowling alley and found that my daughter and her boyfriend with 2 lanes down from Mr Plant. They warned me that Plant's manager was preventing anyone from approaching Mr Plant.

But I knew I had to try. This was Robert friggin Plant, after all. How could I find myself so close to someone so foundational to my life and not try to at least express my gratitude for him and the music he created?

So I calmly approached Mr Plant. His manager obstructed me, shaking his head, "No, mate". I pleaded, "I just need to tell him how much his music has meant to me." "No, mate" his manager said again while shaking his head. I could tell I wasn't going to get anywhere and ultimately I chose to respect his boundaries and move on. I bowled a few rounds with my daughter (with Mr Plant a couple lanes over - and bowling better than me, I might add!), downed my beer and headed home.

I woke up this morning to this picture. It turns out my daughter's boyfriend (who plays in a bluegrass band here in the Twin Cities) struck up a conversation with Mr Plant's bandmates. They spoke for over an hour. Just as Mr Plant and his entourage were getting up to leave my daughter's boyfriend tried to ask for a picture. The manager re-buffed him. But, Mr Plant shrugged him off and motioned them over for a photo.

So this is them, with Mr Plant posing with their leftover nachos.

I wish I was there but it warms my heart that my daughter got to meet a living musical legend.

Seeing the other post about almost meeting Robert reminded me of the time I met him.

I was involved with a now defunct music fest here in Pensacola called Springfest. Held in May of each year, we'd get the cream of the crop from Jazz Fest in NOLA due to proximity. It's much cheaper to book an artist if they're already in the region.

One year we had Jerry Lee Lewis playing and at the same time frame as the fest, Page & Plant were in town for a week rehearsing their new tour. One of the stage hands needed to go to the Civic Center ( huge indoor venue for the P&P show ) to get something for a band, and P&P were there rehearsing. Apparently Robert heard Jerry Lee was playing and he wanted to watch him. Arrangements were made and Robert arrives on site with his assistant. Myself and another festival person escorted Robert down to the front of the stage between the stage and the barricades and we watched Jerry Lee. He was so drunk he couldn't finish a song. He'd get about halfway through a song and then just jump into another one. Looking at the other band members faces as they tried to keep up was priceless lol. Jerry later commented that the reason he kept messing up was that seeing Robert in front of the stage made him nervous lmao.

At the end of the night, Robert graciously allowed me to get a picture with him and his assistant got my info to put me on the guest list for their show later in the week.

Led Zeppelin Lyric Tattoos

About a year and a half ago I got my first tattoo, the hummingbird from the cover of Led Zeppelin III, on my left forearm. I love it a lot and Im very happy with it, but I think I want to get a few small details fixed, like empty spaces where lines should connect. While im at it though I want to get a lyric done next to it. Right now the two lyrics im weighing are “Measuring a summer’s day, I only find it slips away to grey.” (Which is intuitive because its from III) and “Upon us all a little rain must fall. Its just a little rain.”
So although im not committing to either one right now, Id love to hear what you would do / prefer.

Peter Grant's former home removed from market after failing to sell.

Led Zeppelin News reports Grant's former home in East Sussex has been removed from the market after failing to sell for 3 years and £1.5 million in price reductions.

Honestly, I can see why- it looks like a combination of a medieval castle, hunting lodge, and 70's shag den. Look at this place!

The new Narnia movie features Stairway to heaven, I personally would have chosen "What is and what should never be".

What zep song would you choose as appropriate for the magical lands of Narnia?

Do you see Led Zeppelin doing one more farewell show?

Like Page, Plant, and JPJ coming back for one show with Bonham's son as drummer. I think it would be badass, however not sure if they would do it, what do you guys think?

The Jeff Beck's "Truth" Dilemma

Zeppelin has always been my favourite band ever, and GVF are also up there for obvious reasons...

I always found the GVF hate very childish and weirdly "protective". But as I stumbled across this old Jeff Beck album called "Truth", I could't help but think about the clear similarities with this album and Led Zep's first 2 albums. I then did some digging to find out that this was a REAL dilemma back in the day, and that Led Zep were apparently under fire for copying Beck's sound from that album.

Does anyone have any further details on this one? Or opinions? Would love to hear your thoughts. As previously stated, Zep are my fav band and I'll never hold anything against these legends.

Listening to Led Zeppelin IV for the first time.

I been slowly listening to Led Zeppelin work in order. My favourite being Led Zeppelin 3, until now. Remarkable piece of music IV is. I love everything about it, to the track listening being perfect, to the tightness of the songwriting, the use of time signatures and female vocals. It's a perfect record, I'm glad they kept the folk aspect from the previous work as well. It's such a smart record and a strong evolution from their past albums.

It's the best band in the world being the best band in the world.

Help with LZ V-VIII playlists?

Thumbnail open.spotify.com

Hey guys, I would love some help finishing up these thematically ordered Led Zeppelin "albums" (linked to Spotify). I put songs that feel right together, and try my best an order that flows nicely.

So far 5-7 make sense to me, but I've kinda used 8 as a throwaway for songs I don't know how to place.

Led Zeppelin V

Led Zeppelin VI

Led Zeppelin VII

Led Zeppelin VIII

EDIT: I would also love some links to posts that may have tackled a similar topic. I read an article that proposed rearrangements of the last 3-4 albums (excluding CODA) considering the albums were constrained lengthwise and they were pumping out lots of songs around this time... but I can't find the link.

Interesting observations on Achilles Last Stand from a classical pianist/harpist and music teacher

I wouldn't normally post a reaction video, but I'm sharing this because it's the most precise listening to Achilles Last Stand I've come across.

YMMV, but several of her insights deepened my appreciation of a song I already dearly loved.

Westwood one superstar concert series July 26, 1993 (very good quality recordings)
Standard syndication contracts required the DJs or station engineers to either return the records to the distributor or physically destroy them immediately after the broadcast date to prevent bootlegging

Do you see Jimmy Page as a songwriter/composer first and guitar player second or vice versa?

For what it’s worth, most people have him in their top five for guitarists, which I would agree with. But then you think how songs like stairway, Kashmir, ten years gone, and Achilles last stand were mainly his brainchild, which leads me to think his songwriting abilities eclipse his guitar playing abilities. But idk man. Either way THATS MY GOAT
