Tafodiaith / Dialect Regret over choosing South Welsh, big deal or no big deal?
So I signed up for the South Welsh Dysgu Cymraeg course because it was the only one with availability when I wanted to start, and I’d kind of figured that South Welsh is seen as a “default” and the variations would just be learnable after. North Wales is my favourite part of the whole of the UK, but I figured South Welsh was better than delaying a course by some months.
However, after starting my course, I found out through a DNA test that I have a half sister from North Wales. (Crazy, right?!) She’s first language Welsh and we’re planning on meeting up soon. Obviously as a beginner I won’t be speaking to her in much Welsh, but I just get the sense I chose the wrong course as I do feel a strong pull to North Wales. I’m also reading a few books like Colloquial Welsh and that does a good job of showing you the differences along the way.
Is it just fine to learn the differences along the way as I spot them, and maybe sign up for the next level in North Welsh, or do I need to go all the way in one?

Cwestiwn / Question Would someone be willing to translate whatRichard Burton says in this clip?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Richard Burton was a guest on the first episode of the Sammy Davis, Jr. show in 1966. In response to a question, he starts in English and then says something very rapidly in Welsh.
Would anyone here be willing to translate what he said?

Some welsh help.. please?
hi! i'm currently trying to learn northern welsh for my current partner who is a cofis(from caernarfon) and right now i'm trying out apps like blas, memrise and SSiW, however blas and memrise are only teaching me southern welsh and some things i have been taught is completely confusing him despite welsh being his first language. i currently live in england(lincolnshire) so learning welsh is pretty hard despite my celtic background. if anyone is able to help me or give me resources on learning specifically northern welsh i'd be greatly appreciative ❤️ :D

Grammatical genders
Recently I started learning welsh by myself (Brazilian here, not many options for that, you know?), one thing that is getting me is the grammatical gender of Welsh. So I wanted tips, how to memorize better the genders and how did you who learn do to memorize it?

Mamaliaid Prydain available now on Ymestyn.Cymru
I've now made Mamaliaid Prydain available as a module on Ymestyn.Cymru — each chapter has an annotated illustration and word list, and is pitched at the Canolradd level.
The module covers twelve of our native mammals, some of them common, some very rare. So if you want to find out about how the pine marten is helping save the red squirrel, how moles use the neurotoxin in their saliva, and about the ongoing work to save the Scottish wildcat, then Mamaliaid Prydain is for you!
(It probably won't get released as an ebook proper for a while, as developing new modules for Ymestyn takes most of my time, and the economics of ebooks don't really work in my favour.)

O'r Gorau?
What does the actually mean, hear it used on s4c all the time in different situations, but can't quite pin it down, and would love a bit of help before I drop it into conversation

Cynllun Siarad
I had an email from Dysgu Cymraeg last week saying that the Siarad scheme, which pairs learners with fluent speakers for practice calls, was relaunching on 15 October and that we could register from 12th, but I've been checking the website and there's no sign up button anywhere to be found.
Does anyone know what's going on?
I've signed up before but never been successfully paired – one year just nothing happened, and then the next time I signed up my fluent speaker never responded to my messages. I'm hoping to have more luck this time because one thing that's really missing from my learning is regular conversation in Welsh.

Hi All,
I'm an adult welsh learner, and really do find the Welsh is Fun and Welsh is Funtastic very very good. I’m looking for something a bit more concrete now and am thinking about Heini Gruffudd’s My Way to Welsh ? Has anyone got this book and do they recommend it ?

Gramadeg / Grammar Numerals
I have some questions about how numerals work.
I've started learning only 0-10 so far, and I've got really numerous questions. Also, I'm a little confused with the difference between the standard and the spoken languages
Is "sero" used in Welsh and can it be pronounced with [z]?
Does "un" cause limited soft mutation in sg. f. noun?
Do "dau" and "dwy" cause soft mutation for all the nouns?
What is the difference between "ail" and "eilfed" and do they both cause soft mutation?
Is "cynta' " used in the spoken language
What happens with "tri" and "chwe" in the spoken language (I mean do they cause aspirate mutation)?
What the difference between "pum" and "pump"; "chwe" and "chwech"?
Does "seithfed" cause any mutation?
What is "deng"?
Do any other numerals cause any mutation, and I've missed something?
Does "cyntaf" follow a noun?
Constructions with numerals are either numeral + singular noun or numeral + o + plural noun, right?
I'm extremely thankful to everyone who will respond to my questions

Ynganu / Pronunciation Is Rh being lost from the speech of some southern speakers?
I now listen carefully for this as it was suggested here that some southern speakers do not differentiate between R and Rh (replacing Rh with R - still rolled, though). I have heard this but I'm not convinced that all, say, Sir Gâr speakers have lost their Rh. For instance, I still hear Rh in the speech of Heledd Cynwal. (Raised in Bethlehem, Llandeilo). What do you hear?

Ynganu / Pronunciation Pronunciation of Prynhawn
Is it pronounced as (S) [prɪnˈhau̯n] or as [prənˈhau̯n], if the first one, then why? Is that because of some unknown rules of compounds (I assumed that the word is a compound, maybe I'm wrong)?
Edit: Also, how are the combinations, such as: eau, iau and some others with several vowel letters in a row(I'm guessing that first "i" usually represents [j], but what about "i"/"y" in the middle of a combination)
I apologise if it was hard to understand my English

Weekly Update on My Learning Progress
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I started learning Welsh on September 28, 2026, because I am interested in language learning. I'd like to post my weekly progress here. My goal is to achieve fluency in two years' time. My strategy is learning from real-life sentences, instead of a structured course, because I believe that's how we learn our native language. For my first week (Sept 28, 2026- Oct 2, 2026):
I watched a documentary on the history of Wales. It's inspiring.
I learned to speak the following two sentences. My recording is attached.
If anyone could offer corrections, I'd really appreciate it.
