Hog Problem Solutions

Seen many people get pressed about the issue but why doesn’t Animal Control handle the situation in North Central Park? Trap capture the pigs and euthanize them.

The city kills dogs and cats at the city shelter so why wouldn’t they do this for pigs?

Your first problem is thinking/asking animal control to actually do something. I don’t think in 30+ years in Laredo I have ever heard of animal control ever lifting a finger to do their job.

Ive seen them driving around town in the city trucks, is it because of a lack of funding?

Lack of staffing. At any given moment you have maybe 7-10 officers trying to handle calls from the entire city, so they have to start filtering out what they can realistically respond to on any given day. Bites, bats, and snakes are top priority. Anything else is 50/50.

They cited me for "selling puppies" without a permit because I was walking my puppy outside of my business one time and they claimed someone reported me.

Nevermind that she was chipped and registered to my name, an anonymous report apparently meant I was guilty according to the mongrel with a chain wallet that was working at the municipal court at the time as a prosecutor or whatever.

Only time I've ever seen them do anything otherwise, lol.

Because Texas State Laws prohibits for city animal control to do that. Also, they carry diseases that require special handling.

Typical pet euthanasias are done with IV drugs. Good luck getting a IV line in a 400 lb boar. Then body disposal is a whole other issue. If city did end up doing the trapping they would need to dispatch them via firearms. It’s the safest and most humane way. If your wondering why dart gun with euthanasia drugs don’t work go ask the lady in Tennessee with the botched death penalty. Also animal control is probably the most underfunded and overworked dept in every city in America.

I do think there is a solution through multiple partnering tho. Get city to allow privatization of trapping in city land and have company trap pick up and harvest. Work with butcher shops and USDA to clear meat and sell it. Produce funds to offset some of the cost of system. It still probably a money losing system but less funds come from our taxes.

Animal control doesn’t handle that, that would be game warden. Animal control did it for a little while but iirc they got in trouble for it.

Because wild hogs are wildly different than your garden variety stray cats and dogs?

My grandparents had little fear of the wildlife I grew up around in south Texas. Bobcats, coyotes, snakes…no problem. They were handled without blinking. Wild pigs though? Yeah no. I was taught to steer clear of them. They’ll wreck you, and if they don’t, you’ll wind up diseased and battered.

Jose and Mark with any city’s animal control division won’t likely be equipped to deal with a wild pig.

I understand that but maybe the state or county can assist? Like a separate facility and they use euthanasia methods they use for livestock. I know handling a pig is dangerous but why not use tranquilizer or euthanize when it’s caught on site and then disposed of.

Yeah you can’t do that, can’t use bow & arrows either but you can use a javelin/spear. Those are technically allowed but would be best used for self defense

I agree. Mind you, been walking there for 13 years and it has always been an issue but as years go by it is definitely getting worse. I was there yesterday and scared the shit out of me. I like to walk in the evenings and about a 15 litter family with the mom and dad were sleeping on the side. Didn’t even saw them there till I was already next to them because it was dark. Thankfully they were chilling, but it always puts me so tense. Not even a minute more later another litter of about 10-15 too were also chilling there. It is a disaster waiting to happen, mark my words.
