How are we traveling to events with our great kilts?
There are a number of faires, festivals, and events this time of year, and I find myself at a loss and was hoping the community could give some guidance.
When traveling to nearby/same day events, I have been pleating it, and then binding those pleats with quilting clips (thing big binder clips). I can then throw it on once we’re there keeping the pleats with varying success. I’ve considered just pleating and putting it on to drive but the bustle can be uncomfortable and keeping the pleats is, again, only marginally successful.
I’ve tried and practiced the pleating while it’s on your arm/shoulder and then putting on to no success, as well.
Can’t always guarantee a good place to spread out 9 yards of wool to kneel down in a shirt and chones.
Are we just dealing with the dirt and debris and finding places to do it, are we just sitting on the bustle? I’d love to hear what everyone else does.

Hello everyone!
I've been wearing kilts for some time now, but so far unfortunately only cheap acrylic ones due to a) not having money and b)the lack of availability of quality kilts here in Germany.
Well, since I'm not a poor student anymore, I've decided that I would like to upgrade and my wife asked me if I would like to take a trip to Scotland next year. I obviously said yes. While my financial resources have improved, I still want to only spend a reasonable amount of money on the kilt and decided that an ex-hire would probably be the best way to do so.
Therefore I would like to know:
Where in Edinburgh should I go looking for reasonable quality ex-hire kilts? Or do you recommend another city?
And:
I've decided to go for the Isle of Skye tartan, as Skye is, where I asked my wife to marry me. How are my chances of finding an ex-hire kilt in said tartan?
Thanks in advance!
Hi all. I'm graduating fairly soon and I'd like to wear some highland formal wear to honour my Dad, who was a proud Scot. I'm Irish and live in England, and whilst I've worn kilts a fair amount casually I have no experience at doing so in a black tie or truly formal setting. I've got a kilt in the Johnstone ancient tartan as well as a clan kilt pin, and I've just scored a black prince Charlie jacket and matching waistcoat fairly cheap secondhand.
Though I'm no longer a student I'm still dirt poor so I'm compromising on aspects of the full outfit such as the ghillie brogues or proper belt buckle, though I'd like to get the full outfit as accurate as I can reasonably make it.
What I've gotten so far is the kilt itself (as well as the pin), the black jacket and waistcoat, some flashes I inherited, a white shirt, and dark grey kilt hose (as well as black boots in lieu of the correct footwear). Mainly what I wanted to ask is whether it's appropriate to wear a fly plaid at a graduation, and what sort of sporran I should be pairing with the outfit. I have a sporran from my dad made of brown leather with a lion rampant, but it's not a formal one by any means and I'm wondering if I should try and find a secondhand dress sporran online. Additionally, I was wondering if there was any rules (however strict) on the colour of the hose as I'd say 90% of the pictures I've seen of highland black tie have white hose rather than a different colour (such as the dark grey I've currently got).
I'm also in the process of carving my own Sgian Dubh though it's a long way off being ready! At the moment it'll just be the handle attached to a wooden splint so it slides into my sock, though I intend to replace that with a real blade later in life. Advice on this sort of woodwork or conventions about what to do with a sgian dubh would be very much appreciated.
Thanks a million lads

So I know there's some very large stigma on kilts for Halloween. But I want to have something i will wear several times throughout the year. And I want to honor my Scottish ancestors for the first Halloween I celebrate as an adult. What are the dos and don'ts of the kilt. Obviously not at work or church. But would it be permissible to wear it when I go out on the weekends, or during family functions?

Is this acceptable to be used as a utility kilt pin?

I have been putting serious thoughts into having a kilt made. As we have been unable to pin down a particular clan affiliation due to records available. I was thinking I would have a US Navy tartan used. Wanting a higher quality than a “G-K”, who would you suggest as a quality manufacturer?
I am considering a Stripe Pleated 9yd wool or wool blend. The kilt would be for ren-fests as well as semi daily. I know the US Navy tartan would not fall into the traditional highland medieval timeframe but I’m not keen on the idea of wearing a tartan of a clan of which I do not belong.
Again, I’m not looking for the tourist level of quality. I’m looking for something that I can be proud of and wear for many years.
Thoughts, comments, or otherwise?

This is an off-the-rack wool kilt that I bought to wear to the renaissance festival (hence the non-traditional belt). I'll probably buy a few more off-the-rack kilts and maybe some non-traditional (PV sport kilts or utility) kilts for casual wear.
That said, I'd like to invest in a traditional, made to fit kilt for more formal events but will have to measure at home and order online.
Is this around the correct length for me? To clarify, the top of the kilt is at my navel and my hose come up to just under my kneecaps (yes, I know I'm built like Gru from Despicable Me).
I'm also wide open to any other criticism, feel free to roast away.
Finally, I'm looking for recommendations for US based kilt makers. A proper Scottish made kilt would be awesome, but shipping would probably double the price given the <gestures everywhere>.

I’m new to kilts y’all so go easy on me. I bought a kilt belt but I have no idea how I’m supposed to fasten it. It doesn’t have a buckle just a metal loop. The inside is lined with soft Velcro from the ‘buckle’ end to about 7-8 inches from the pointed end where it changes to the hard plastic Velcro loop material.
Any help is appreciated

I have 2 pairs of hoses, one from amazon and a cotton one from usakilts, both causes my legs to itch (to be fair other socks do this too), is there any sock material that wouldn't cause my legs to itch? Also, what other socks besides kilt hoes can one wear in non-formal settings, I like to experiment with the kilt but don't want to disrespect the heritage of the wardrobe.

Swedish working clothes brand Blåkläder makes this heavy utility kilt, been thinking about it for probably 15 years and finally bought one this summer. Might never wear pants to work again!

Hi! I'm new to kilts. I've bought a black cotton kilt going to an 80ies punk arr.
Am I supposed to wear sock leaving a gap between the top of my legs bare, between the socks and the kilt, or is it okay to cover my legs all together?

Put this outfit together to commemorate the life of my father who was deeply rooted in Scottish Philosophy, along with the nature preserve where his body lies.

I am back for another question. I have 2 causal kilts from USAkilts (which I enjoy a lot), but I was thinking of upgrading to a semi tradition, anyone here have experience with them and how they compare to their casual model?

Some swatches, tweed wallet and kilt extension straps. Adding to my inventory.
Tweed wallet was advertised for females, I’m a male.
In my opinion, I don’t think the wallet is too feminine. Could do well for both genders. I liked the low profile. Not too loud. Just right.
One tartan swatch is called Open Road (blue, yellow, green).
The other tartan swatch is called Pacific Northwest (red, green, blue, brown shades).
The Lindsay tartan is a tweed version.
Kilt extension straps are 1.25”.
Next on my wishlist is an Inverness Cape. Good midlife hobby. What’s next on your wishlist?

Found these from a couple years ago, thought I'd share. My Jacobite kit sans haversack and shooting bag.
