I have been keto since December, when my HbA1c crept up to 42.
My dad got T2 diabetes in his 30s, my brother in his teens and my sister in her 20s. I am 56 and female.
I was 16st when I started the diet. I wasn't sure I could manage as I loved carbs, but I did and found it brilliant.
I have lost 8 stone now. I have found my diet has become more restricted. I don't like meat, so cheese has been my saviour. I eat about 4 cheese slices a day, and maybe mozzarella for dinner, or eggs and occasionally fish.
For the day I eat cheese slices (about three or four), a few nuts and then for dinner I have either a few cucumber slices with cheese/cottage cheese/eggs. Sometimes some cauliflower, sometimes a courgette. Then some nuts in the evening. I drink tea with Alpro No Sugars Almond Milk
Today I had a health check with finger prick tests. My HbA1c was 31, but my cholesterol has raised from 5.2 in December to 9.2, and my blood pressure was 140/103 after always being low. I have also lost another 10% of my bodyweight since August.
I am so happy with my progress, but really confused as to why my checks are so bad? I have been told to eat less cheese, but that still doesn't account for the rise, as it's my only real intake of saturated fat, and I eat a lot less than I did when I ate chocolate, cake and crisps and pizza, etc.
I am going to be forced onto statins, but I am scared as I don't know why this has happened, or why the BP is so high.
How can I be healthy on this?
