Good evening. I was recently looking up Kazakh cuisine online and became interested in some ingredients I hadn’t known about before. I’ve never actually been there, so I can only imagine what they taste like, but here’s what I came up with. Would a comment like this from a foreigner be considered rude?
① Epi with Horse Meat and Kurt Sauce
I think it would be delicious to spread Kurt sauce on rolled-out bread dough, top it with thin slices of horse meat that have been stir-fried with pepper and cooled, roll it up into an “epi” shape, and bake it.
I got the idea because Japanese bakeries sell all kinds of bread with various fillings rolled inside, like custard-filled buns and sausage rolls.
I’ve never eaten horse meat, and I couldn’t find kurt online, so I can’t test this recipe…
② Gelato with Balkaymak
It wouldn’t just be great as gelato—it would also be wonderful to top vanilla ice cream with Balkaymak and sprinkle it with chopped almonds.
③ Balkaymak Macchiato
Since caramel macchiato is already a commercial product, this sounds delicious.
④ Desserts Using Balkaymak
It would taste great used as apple pie filling or drizzled on top. It would also be delicious kneaded into dough when making donuts, or drizzled over plain donuts—and it would look great in photos, too.
When I searched for “Balkaymak” without including “Kazakhstan” in the search bar, results for the Turkish version also came up, which was a bit confusing.
Since making Balkaymak takes time and effort, I wonder if it’ll be limited to a certain number of servings per day.
I recently found a website that provides recipes for Kuzul Ilimshik in Japanese. Is my understanding correct that Ak Ilimshik is made by skimming the cream off milk, mixing it with butter, and then cooking it down to remove the moisture?
Also, does the freshly skimmed, moisture-rich version have a different name? I thought it would be delicious in a hamburg steak.
In Kazakhstan, when making new variations of bread, do you add camel or horse milk to the dough water? Or do you use powdered versions, like skim milk?
I’m curious about what kind of bread you’d get if you crumbled kurt and kneaded it into the dough after the first rise. Would it be better to mix it into the dough before it’s shaped and set aside for fermentation…? It seems like this would expand the variety of savory breads.
Will I be able to try it if I visit the country?
The flavor of dairy products probably varies by region, so I wonder if they sell any “tasting sets” to compare them…
From a Japanese person who strained my wrist this week from typing too much about AI and recipe variations using the swipe method
I used a translation tool to help with the English text above.

So, I (a Latvian) inherited a box of diapositives made by my grandfather named "Almaty 1978", and there were some rather typical pictures of Medeu stadium, Tian Shan mountains and so on, but what really caught my attention were some pictures of the neighborhoods of Almaty and some other places that neither I nor Google Lens could recognise. Maybe you guys have some ideas?

In the Kostanay Region, two new wind farms with a combined capacity of 100 MW have been launched, alongside a new 44-hectare eco-park near the city of Kostanay.
The wind farms have 16 turbines in total, while the park offers walking and cycling paths, sports fields, playgrounds, and space for families to spend time outdoors.
What I find interesting is that these are two different sides of the same idea: making a place better to live in while also changing how it produces energy.
Kazakhstan has huge open spaces and plenty of potential for renewable energy, but expanding green energy is only part of the challenge. It also matters whether people can see improvements in their everyday lives.
What do you think makes a city genuinely greener: cleaner energy, more parks and public spaces, better public transport, or a combination of all three?

A bat hit the top of my head today, on an evening walk. I then touched it a few times, no blood drawn (or sharp pain) but then I wiped my snot with the same hand and a finger slipped into the nostril once. Apparently 11-12% of bats in Almaty got rabies, at the Central Hospital ER I was turned away since "no blood drawn" but every gov health source says I do need PEP. Bats apparently can leave invisible marks. What do I do?

I am an Indonesian man who’s currently studying abroad here in Astana, Kazakhstan for my Master’s degree for two years.
I just want to know if there’s any community I can join in or even a free course / class to get new friends? Like Kazakh or Russian course. I am in a tight budget so I am asking for like no-cost ones 🤣. And if you’re concern about my age, I am in early 30 but I usually get along with both much younger ones (even people in 18-ish) and much older ones like people in 50ish 💪
I have some of new friends at the class but probably because I am late coming to the class (the class started a few weeks before I’ve arrived) or because they are busy or limited by the language I just feel we’re still separated in a way like not that close. Don’t get me wrong they are nice.
Because I think I started to feel lonely even though I am like 60% introvert (INFP), especially because my class happens at night and I only have some friends here at the dorm which are not close as well. As for contrary in Indonesia I have a lot of friends, some are really close that we’re still connected like having phone calls etc. There my problem was to spend more time being alone, but here I am in Astana, started to feel lonely and homesick 🫠🫠🫠

Hello! Is there a place in Almaty that would want a volunteer English tutor? Could be private or part of an organization. Would like to offer my skills for free if there is interest. Thanks in advance!
