Weekly Discussion Thread - June 27, 2025
The Weekly Discussion Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/kayakfishing community can come and ask questions or share anything.
You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other anglers. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new gear.
Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other anglers.

Fish Finder for Smaller rivers
My kayak came with a scupper mounted transducer so I have been looking into fish finders. I generally fish mid-smaller rivers and was wondering how well these work in these conditions. I have heard mixed reviews and would appreciate any insight.

First Kayak Trip
Took my Hobie Compass out for her maiden voyage (and my maiden voyage). Brought up this Calico by the sea wall!

Hull ID issue.
I got a wilderness systems recon 120 in a trade. The hull id is barely legible, but from what I can decipher it does not match the Hull ID format correctly. (Letters where numbers should be) and the first three letters which should be the manufacturer id are not what my states DNR say they should be. I’m trying to register it so I can put a motor on it. Has anyone had luck contacting anyone at Wilderness Systems? I can’t find info on their website on how to contact them. Just trying to properly decipher the HID so I can get this thing registered.

36" ish redfish from the kayak, caught on 8lbs braid. Didn't take long to measure. Longer than the kayak is wide.

Swivel seat mods for perception peacador
Does any one have any tips on a mod to put in a swivel seat on a perception kayak? Or has anyone bought one after market that fits?

Filming
I use a yak attack pole mount for my dji osmo action 5 to film. The mount kinda sucks, in big waves it’ll spin around on its own on the base mount and it’s just not very stable in general but anyways do you guys use a waterproof case with your cameras? I keep mine plugged in to an external 20ah battery to run it all day and I dropped the camera in the water and fried it.
Don’t want to have that happen again but swear I see everyone not use a case with their djis/gopros when plugged into an external battery

Good deal on used Old Town?
Ive been racking my brain trying to find the best deal on a quality pedal driven kayak so I can get more serious about my fishing. Found this on marketplace for 1500, I’ve been in old town canoes but would love some input! Also, would love some tried and true recommendations for roof racks, I’ll be strapping it to my 07 rav4, I’ve heard the Malone sea wing V style racks are good for loading and unloading heavier kayaks. Thanks!

The only thing better than Ono is 2 Ono.
These speed demons are such a fun, although short, fight.

Wasn’t targeting pike, but they were targeting me today
I was throwing a weightless fluke along a weed edge seeing if LMB were still hitting, and this thing just crushed it. Definitely the biggest fish I’ve pulled into my lifetime Yukon. Caught another slightly smaller one a few minutes later.

Adding a 2nd Chair?
How are you guys attaching a 2nd chair to kayaks with floor rails? Something like a Larry chair. Assume T bolts, but are there any brackets that make it easy and secure?

PWM help
Hello hoping someone can guide me in what I might be doing wrong. I have the Newport 55lb kayak series trolling motor hooked up to the PWM Controller 2025 Briidea 12V/24V 50A DC Motor Speed Controller w/Emer Shutoff.
I have it wired from left to right.
Black from battery
Red from breaker from battery
Red from quick disconnect to motor
Black from quick disconnect going to motor
The speed lever has power and can make the motor run but it ends up just acting as an on/off switch and doesn’t control the speed at all. The only way to adjust the speed when the lever is forward is to actually switch the speed handle on the motor itself which defeats the purpose. Anyone have an ideas what might be going on? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good tandem options?
Looking good a good kayak for my son and I. He’s 12, so not talking two adults. Obviously want something we can easily carry a little gear in. Any considerations?
I’m open to inflatable or solid. I wouldn’t mind something that’s easy to handle solo as well as tandem.

The skunk is dead
I have been trying to catch something, anything on my new yak. It has seemed to be an uphill battle for some unknown reason. Well, yesterday i broke the skunk. Finally.
I was trolling around trying to find a nice spot I marked before but couldn't find it. I heard splashing behind me and turned to go to it. I was trolling some crappie jigs tipped with a minnow. Then BAM! I pulled in the bigger of the 2. The second was hooked at the inlet of a cove using the same crappie jig tipped with crappie bites.
The third pic is of her. Last pic is of what I was trying to find. For those who dont remember my previous post, here is my beast. Only change is I have a ladder rack on the trailer and I upgraded to a Lowrance Eagle 7 Triple Shot.
