Millennials can’t buy a home either! Well us younger ones

23

u/Money_Confection_409 2d ago

Came here to say PRECISELY THIS!!! Gen Z aren’t the only ones suffering!!! wtf they think about millennials? We should’ve pulled ourselves up by the boot straps? Meanwhile COVID delayed a lot of plans and fucked up a lot of future prospective financial growth for most of us

3

u/BrownsvilleJoey 1d ago

Yup, we lived through two near world ending moments and society has already moved on lol. I suspect this has a lot to do with Gen Z being more conservative than we were/are despite their aesthetics

20

u/hoespringa 2d ago

They don't actually care. Millennials discussed the lack of ability of homeownership for a decade. Now, it's moved onto Gen Z. They too won't be able to afford a home but the discussion will go on for another decade or so until it's Gen Alpha's turn. Nothing will actually change, just the target demographic of the conversation will.

7

u/Pale_Kitchen_801 2d ago

nothing changes because people continue to have attitudes like yours. Change takes guts not “it’s been like this forever so get used to it” or “nothing will actually change” not to be that guy but people deadass used to say that about slavery or women’s rights. Nothing stays the same and everything changes. might not be in the time frame you want but change is happening.

2

u/Important-Zebra-69 2d ago

Change takes things we are not allowed to say here without getting banned because it causes changes and the status quo don't want change.

To be fair, women have been robbed of our rights.

2

u/Pale_Kitchen_801 1d ago

I have full confidence that women will regain their rights. our system is very broken at the moment but i think it’s a common denominator that the younger generations do not put up with the bullshit that the older folks have taken for so long. It’s unfortunate but it will take time. Change is inevitable

We are the lost generation, they just won’t up and say it.

9

u/kuunami79 2d ago

Even many younger Gen X have never been able to afford a home. The Boomers had already destroyed the housing market.

4

u/Cultural-Loan86 2d ago

The few opportunities I have had dissolved because I am a single parent with zero help. I should have purchased years ago, but I thought I would always be able to purchase one. Those two factors will keep me renting til I die.

u/born_in_ufo 2d ago

Im an elder and can’t either! I think a lot of us that don’t come from wealth and/or don’t have families with long histories in America are all in the same boat.

6

u/YoRHa11Z 2d ago

Older millennials had a small window to afford a home, it was between 2009 and 2021. The worst part is that those were also the years that should be for buying experiences, finding their spouses, or moving/career exploration.

7

u/born_in_ufo 2d ago

I graduated college in ‘08 when we were in a recession and a housing crisis and I was $100k in student loan debt. Millennials have had to face a lot that was out of our control and hopefully Gen Z has been able to learn from our experiences. We are in a class war and the elites are crushing us all, the dream we were sold is no longer within reach.

Are you married?

1

u/AdorableDemand46 2d ago

Eh, some can but it's normally at a big personal cost too. My job is high paying and recession proof, but the things I deal with and have seen in the job made my brain just a little broken

1

u/The-Big-Play 1d ago

Yeah I HOPE I can buy one once I'm 40 but it's not looking like I'll be able to 😭

1

u/ArtIsAwesome3 1d ago

I am a millennial and the only way I got a house is by inheritance, and even then the government was like "we require 80% of your income, 3 of your daughters, and your right foot."

1

u/OregonGreen242 1d ago

Us older ones either!

1

u/BluebirdImportant865 1d ago

Most of my older millennial friends don’t own homes either. I live in the town. I grew up in but because it’s an expensive city, I never really expected to anyway. Definitely seems like an extreme privilege.

1

u/Pale_Wish4278 20h ago

If the average first time home buyer is 40, that means this is largely millennial data, not Gen Z. I'm not saying that to diminish the Gen Z experience. I'm saying it because we are all suffering the same fate.

17

u/Long-Cap-2244 2d ago

Having this conversation with Oprah is wild. Oprah lives in a gated mansion in montecito and that's just one of her homes.

3

u/The-Big-Play 1d ago

I thought the same but then I also thought that I am weirdly sort of grateful that someone from her generation with that kind of wealth is at least acknowledging and understanding of what's going on. Am I being fooled? 😅

This. She’s not the. Best person to be holding this forum.

3

u/MyFeet_4You82 2d ago

Only good part is these are the people who were watching her daytime talk show, so he holds a place in their hearts so to speak and they'll still listen to her. Hopefully she juat steers them in the right direction. 🙏🏾

1

u/fieldsports202 2d ago

Why not? She has access to some of the best economist out there who understands the market.

Who do you want on her show yo lead others?

10

Gen Z!?!? Millennials aren’t even sorted out yet.

41

u/KingQu- 2d ago

Everyone looks flabbergasted like they had no idea. Fk Oprah and her sheep

19

u/JaySpace77312 2d ago

They legit didn't know. Im a Millenial and I remember having trouble finding a job in the Recession after high school. My Mom thought I was being a lazy bum, she literally told me to look in the newspaper or go "job hunting" as in just show up places and ask to fill out an application. They were telling all the people at the time to go home and fill it out online. She literally couldn't comprehend not being able to just walk in somewhere and fill out an application. This is similar, all they know is how it was done when it was their turn to buy home, they dont get it.

18

u/TrashGamerBro 2d ago

SAME. My Dad had me walking the streets looking for work like Will Smith in Pursuit of Happiness 😂

3

u/SundaeNo2378 2d ago

🤣🤣this made me cackle

3

u/Antique_Brother_9563 2d ago

Some years ago, I had gotten laid off from a well paying job as Test Engineer. I had been out of work for a bit. I had an older family ask me "Isn't there a McDonald's there ?"

8

u/Few_Mail_7881 2d ago

Man, fuck Oprah. She’s responsible for “Dr“ Phil and RFK Junior

3

u/Think_Cheesecake7464 2d ago

And Dr Oz!

3

u/Few_Mail_7881 2d ago

Indeed I did! Fuck all those treasonous cocksuckers

3

u/Internal-Plantain-56 2d ago

She literally platformed Andrew Wakefield and Jenny McCarthy into millions of homes.

She’s a monster.

3

15

u/Head_Cloud_61 2d ago edited 2d ago

Idk why the boomers love Gen Z so much.. when it’s millennials no one gives a fuck. Lmao

Not to mention Gen Z already surpassed millennials in home ownership. Look it up. So not sure what all the whining is about ?

Really I don’t get it.

17

u/spicebombextreme 2d ago

Because Gen Z are their grandkids

People always say grandparents treat grandkids better than they treated their own kids

6

u/Head_Cloud_61 2d ago

That makes sense actually. I don’t mind it, because I’m glad finally the boomers are taking responsibility for what they did by ignoring it for so long and sending all these jobs to China and massive money printing.

But the elder boomers are not in a position to fix it now since many are entering retirement homes and end of life care.

I wish GenZ the best but I’m surprised some Millenials even got that far to even have children.
But I’m afraid that it’s too late. I can’t see anyone actually caring about this problem enough to solve it. It’s past fixing.

What’s done is done. And I can’t even be sympathetic to Gen Z or Alpha or anyone else when I’m 2 threads from being homeless (not a owner or even a renter I never moved out still living at home) lol

I’m 37.. my plan is to move in at my parent’s retirement home at this point. I mean. Thats pretty freaking bad.

8

u/Only_Selection7378 2d ago

Buy a home is laughable they can't even afford rent and food.

14

u/djseanmac 2d ago

I can't take Oprah seriously anymore after she elevated Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, ,and even recently attended Jeff Bezos' wedding. She has shown some truly bad choices as she ages.

8

u/the_urban_juror 2d ago

It's not just the political figures, her show was a contributor to the satanic panic in the 80s and 90s. She was always garbage, she's just garbage who donates to Democrats so people didn't notice.

3

u/djseanmac 2d ago

I forgot about the satanic panic. Man, that era messed up some families, too.

4

u/the_urban_juror 2d ago

Think of all the teen pregnancies that could have been prevented if Oprah hadn't made parents terrified to let their kids play Dungeons & Dragons.

5

u/djseanmac 2d ago

I think the pregnancies stilll would have happened because ccndoms were still taboo back then. The irony being THE GOLDEN GIRLS were the ones getting positive messages out about sexual health. That show really was the first Sex & The City. Every other show was *reactive* not *pro-active* with taboo topics.

Also,, I keep reading your handle as the_rural_juror LOL

2

u/PsychoPeterNikleEatr 2d ago

And her affiliation with Weinstein. She knew.

1

u/Tuxedocatofphilly 2d ago

The Behind the Bastards podcast episode about her is very fair and disturbing. It highlights the actual "good" she tried to do along with all the evil she gave a platform to.

7

u/ArtichokeOk2684 2d ago

its a real bummer that you have to live on the streets because your dollar is not worth what their dollar was worth. FOH bitch

7

u/MagReg2020 2d ago

A lot of Trump's worst people gained prominence via Oprah. Trump himself was a guest. RFK, Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz. She let her show be a platform for a lot of charismatic psychotic scammers who exploited the anxieties of average people. I don't hear concern from her. I hear her seeking renewed relevance. She's not so different from Trump.

5

u/Krow101 2d ago

The greed of the Epstein class has sucked so much out of the economy that young people are screwed.

5

u/SoftGems- The Baddies 2d ago

this is a multi-generational issue but i guess since gen z is the youngest to come to age they’re focusing on them.

2

u/djseanmac 2d ago

Private equity wasn't draining the world when they were young. Now? Private equity firms buy whole neighborhoods to charge astronomical rent. It used to be you were competing for homes with locals and now it's all billionaires with unlimited money buying everything.

3

3

u/ImLeg4llyBlind 2d ago

Can’t stand that wide eyed bug ass looking bitch

Sitting there acting like it’s the first time she hears about this.

3

u/kuunami79 2d ago

The very people speaking in this video is why Gen Z, millennials and even younger Gen X can't afford homes. BABY BOOMERS obliterated the housing market and the economy.

3

u/ltsouthernbelle 2d ago

Housing costs have outpaced earnings period. Add to that the fact that you need down payment money and it’s almost impossible in this economy. If I had to buy the home I’m living in today, I’d be on the brink of disaster trying to pay the mortgage every month. The only solution is to make home buying affordable while restricting people from buying 2nd and 3rd homes. Homes should be for living not airbnb rentals, we’ve absolutely lost the plot.

2

u/Dino_Nuggiez86 15h ago

Not only all this crap, but folks still need to be able to afford TAXES and MAINTENANCE which are skyrocketing as well. Any damage to your house is gonna cost a fortune to fix.

3

u/Apprehensive-Log3638 2d ago

Honestly a lot of the issue is credential inflation. You are forced to earn a four year degree before you can get what used to be entry level jobs. Now you are four years behind your parents plus you have debt. Debt makes it harder to save for a down payment. It is a spiral.

2

u/LimpDifference2505 2d ago

Just don’t go to college and work your ass off you’ll be fine

2

u/Dependent-Year6711 2d ago

The problem with citing 2007, is that the overall trends probably also had inflated new home owner numbers because of, y'know, the widespread fraud going on that just shelled out home loans left and right.

2

u/BabaofTheShimmer 2d ago

2

2

u/boatsyyy 2d ago

What is a home? I dont understand these strange words

2

u/Loud-Situation1605 2d ago

It’s not just Gen Z

2

u/Dense-Land-5927 2d ago

31 -> Just got a significant raise -> Still can't buy a home lol.

Start homes in the south are pushing over $200k for a home in a decent area. Yeah, I could slum it out or move to BFE and drive 2 hours to work, but then what? Get an electric car every 3 years because I'd be driving 150+ miles one way to work.

Just pisses me off. I work 3 jobs and just can't seem to get ahead.

2

u/s29 2d ago

"If you cant buy that first place and then sell it to buy another bigger place and another one, you just never get to build that (wealth)"

Yeah... that wealth building worked because house prices kept going up and up and up.

Which is exactly what you're complaining about.... :|

This is trying to have your cake and eating it too.

2

u/MakuyiMom 2d ago

Oprah don't give a single shit.

2

u/Nahmsayin1 2d ago

Fuck oprah

2

u/Basic-Asparagus-4596 2d ago

can someone explain how this wasnt completely unavoidable if the logic is that we are expected to buy a first home, then sell it to buy another one?

obviously that would mean we are selling it for more than we bought it, which means every home is being bought and resold for a higher price under this logic, yeah? so how would we possibly have affordable houses now? this logic turns affordable housing into a money making scheme. we haven't run out of cheap houses, we're just reselling them for double the price to buy a bigger home and asking "well how come nobody can afford the cheap ones now"

2

u/DistractionCitron 2d ago

Sge's a multi-billionaire wondering why Gen Z can't afford homes. 🙄

2

u/chino1878 2d ago

Uhhhh I can’t stand Oprah

2

u/MetalFaceDad YOU CANT SHOW ME GRACE 👊🏽 2d ago

Man they really want to make millennials be forgotten. I fucking hate this kinda talk

2

u/evilpartiesgetitdone 2d ago

How could this have happened? I mean we made homes an investment asset that needed to appreciate in value for every one that had one. I mean the starter home isnt something to trade up because your family is growing its a lifestyle upgrade based on profit. Everything has to be profit, every home is a precious metal commodity meant to offload on the next sucker buyer and you make bank. How with these incentives in place as a foundational aspect of society could we have gotten to a place where people cannot afford a place to live and all the houses look alike and white and grey ?? HOW

People are living in our investments and mucking them all up, they would appreciate better if there wasnt any people using them gawd

u/Squizmoplatinum 2d ago

2

u/orswich 2d ago

Why dont the boomers in Oprah's crowd sell the houses to their kids for a huge discount???

You can't have it both ways, expect to sell the house for massive profit, then complain your kids can't afford a house

Me and wife have already talked about selling our home to our son one day for 300k and making a legal arrangement that we can live in basement for $500 a month rent... he will own a home and we have affordable housing, fuck needing to have enough money for a Florida condo or an RV to travel the country or annual trips to Europe. We would rather our son have financial security

200k is a minimal amount of money? How fucking out of touch can these ppl be!? Foh talking about 1 million dollar apartments bruh we just want a place to live.

Fuckkkkkkkk the rich!!!!

3

u/AcanthocephalaLost36 2d ago

She’s referring to home prices back in the day years ago being 200k for a downpayment would be minimal. Idk that’s how I heard it. 200k is still a lot of money. If you’re in a HCOL or VHCOL location like New York, Bay Area (SF, San Jose, Berkeley, Palo Alto, Menlo Park) it’s not inconceivable that a 0-1 Bedroom apartment be in the 800-900k range. A home would be over 1M if you want it to be move in ready. It’s pretty depressing.

The BoomErs are still in control—-
Madonna is a boomer.
Lets add this too:
Baby boomers own about 41% of all U.S. real estate assets, which equals roughly $18 trillion to $19 trillion in housing wealth and property value.
Baby Boomers hold roughly $85 trillion to $93 trillion in total assets, making them the wealthiest generation in U.S. history.

we can't buy homes cause she and her likes are greedy and are too busy helping traffic the kids. let's really talk about it 🤭

u/warriorgoose77 1d ago

I bought my first house in 2001 for 150k with a salary of 56k. I’m extremely worried that my kids will never be able to buy a home.

u/novasoline 1d ago

Oprah can fix house with her billion but your government cant with their trillions. Idiots

u/romperstomper36 1d ago

I am a 40+ millennial. My wife and I built a home 6 yrs ago. We would not be able to afford a home in this neighborhood now.. feel extremely fortunate and lucky to have had the $ then

u/datadidit 1d ago

At least she mentioned student debt being part of the issue. Lowering the cost of college or it being forced to lower due to low enrollment will be a start to fixing this. Not a solution but a start.

1

u/0utsyder 1d ago

I find it amazing that people still realize this. This has been going on for decades now!

1

u/TSJormungandr 1d ago

I’m Gen X and wasn’t able to buy a home until 40.

Why is Oprah even relevant... she shoved Oz and Phil down our throats and then sauntered off to her private Hawaiian enclave without a backward glance.

u/Candid_Possible_6231 1d ago

It's called inflation you get poor not rich as they spend money on war

1

u/bobarchter 1d ago

Oprah was Jeffreys best black friend

1

u/Jedi_I_am_not 1d ago

Oprah gave us Phil and Oz. Her views on anything should be irrelevant

I’d argue that even this conversation misses the point of what’s actually going on with home ownership.

Traditionally, buying a home in the U.S has been safe investment. Today, not so much. Between the climate crisis, loss of industry, insurance fraud and the culture change of multiple generations living under one roof I don’t see homes coming back to be the safe investment they once were.

Think about the people in Flint, Michigan. Who would buy a home in a place where the water supply has been poisoned? Some form of this is happening in every corner of the country. Soon enough, people in the Southwest will say “at least Michiganders have water.” Hurricanes in the gulf and the East coast will become more frequent and much stronger. The North is already cold and about to get much colder. On top of that there is no federal legislation against insurance companies canceling policies during major disasters.

Home buying is safe because supply has been artificially suppressed generally increasing value as populations expand.

You may be one of these young people who feel trapped because you don’t have a home. Consider this, in the 10 to 20 years you may not want one.

All these women are billionaires and millionaires. They could help Gen Z have a down payment for their 1st home. But their busy spending their millions buying up the Maui neighborhoods that burnt to the ground. Taking other peoples homes and singing petitions with Maui city so they can’t rebuild. But they can build. So yeah they just speak words that have no true worth behind them.

Hmm 2007 you say? Wonder if anything happened the following year in terms of the real estate market

1

u/No-Chef-6771 1d ago

buying a house is a money pit. the only people benefitting from buying a home is boomers and gen x. everything today is in private equity and nothing is worth shit anymore.

1

u/Apprehensive_Ad4457 1d ago

I wonder whats lower, their ability to afford homes or their literacy rate?

1

u/Lazy-Soil-7880 1d ago

Like millennials can afford homes? Bruh. Everyone is struggling

1

u/dragon_ma_bawls 1d ago

Oprah owns half of fucking Maui.

1

u/Olympicsizedturd 1d ago

Come to Philadelphia we have tons of low cost homes available! You can be in a home for like $100-$150k.

u/YouCantBeSerio 1d ago

If only there were Billionaires in the world, they'd EASILY be able to solve this problem

“It’s so interesting.”

"its a real bummer"

1

u/Constant-Affect-5660 1d ago

I'm an older millennial and my gf and I were able to get our house due to me getting lucky af with dogecoin and her getting some from her mom's life insurance policy. I still think we could've got a house from working and saving, but that would've taken a couple of years.

1

u/Vember_Mereel 1d ago

Oprah sitting there knowing she owns acres and acres of land on Maui. Watching her nod is a bit sickening

1

u/TemporaryCrazy1968 1d ago

Bummer… indentured servitude, just a bummer

1

u/Dunn_or_what 18h ago

Nobody that isn't rich can't afford to by a home because rich pricks like Oprah, and wall street have jacked the price of everything out of the reach of the working slave class.

1

u/tgwilli 16h ago

The real question is why did the math change? And it’s because boomers pulled up the ladder behind them.

1

u/My2cents_0 16h ago

Bummer? Talk about an understatement! And it's not just Gen Z, a lot of Millennials can't afford homes either. Not all Millennials were ready and able to buy homes at 21 - 25

1

u/Glad-Green2722 14h ago

Oprah can I look under my chair? Please tell me to look under my chair Oprah, you can fix this generational crisis all on your own if you wanted just plz tell me to look under my chair. Oprah, is ther money under my chair? Plz bro I need this Oprah!

1

u/Moms_Spaghetti94 10h ago

As a younger millennial, alongside with you guy's. It's crazy to think that we know big corporations and home buyers in the market have more than 1 home. Don't even get me started on the homes that are being built, this is disgusting for young Americans everywhere!

1

u/Scary-Beyond-8360 9h ago

Gen Z is NOT loaded with student debt. Most states passed Promise acts that pay for tuition and room&board for in-state students. The only students leaving in debt are high-income students from high-income families.

u/whoseawhatsea 6h ago

What about us millennials??

•

u/eggsonmyeggs 5h ago

She already did this bit for millennials
