Ulysses Difference between versions?

Post image

Found the hardcover version on the left in the bargain bin at Strand bookstore in NYC (5$ USD) and I bought the paperback on the right from World of books. I wanted to know if there was a significant difference between versions before i donate the paperback version.

Thank you!

I don't know what edition of the text is in the left-hand one, but the Vintage edition has what I definitely consider the best text, so I wouldn't get rid of it.

Personally, I can't imagine donating any copy. I often feel like Mel Gibson in Conspiracy Theory, buying every one I come across.

I believe that the hardcover on the left contains the 1960 Bodley Head text, and the one on the right uses the 1961 Random House text. But from what I have seen and read (I personally do not own a copy of the Bodley Head text) they are basically the same. The Secker and Warburg, though, may have the introduction written by Anthony Burgess which seems to be quite respected.

So, I looked it up. Apparently the S&W has the Bodley Head text, but reset. I don't know if this makes a difference for pagination. The Vintage pagination is referenced in most Ulysses reference works.

Yes, a change in pagination would perhaps be significant.
