Expecting a winter baby? A chance to be part of a 70-year tradition in child psychotherapy training

Hi everyone,

I’m studying for an MSc in Early Child Development and Clinical Applications at UCL and Anna Freud, a pioneering mental health charity for children and families. A key part of the course is a parent–infant observation, and I’m hoping to find a family in London who’d be happy to take part.

Why it matters: For over 70 years, observation like this has been at the heart of training for child psychotherapists. Watching a real baby grow within their family teaches us things no textbook can: how babies begin to communicate, make sense of the world and develop emotionally through their earliest relationships. By taking part, you’d be helping to train the people who will go on to support children and families for the rest of their careers. Many therapists say their infant observation was the most formative part of their training, and they never forget the family who welcomed them in.

What families say: The first visit or two can feel a little unusual, but research with families who’ve taken part shows that many parents came to really enjoy the visits. The early months with a new baby can be intense and sometimes isolating, and having a regular, calm visitor who is genuinely interested in your baby, every small change and new discovery, is something parents often value. Some said it helped them notice and enjoy their baby’s development more themselves, and many look back on it fondly years later.

What it involves: I’m looking for someone due between October 2026 and January 2027 (or with a very new baby). I’d visit for one hour a week during term time, at a regular time that suits you, from soon after birth until June 2028. There’s nothing to prepare and nothing to do differently.

What it isn’t: There are no tests or interventions, and we don't assess or judge you or your parenting. I simply sit quietly and take an interest in your baby as they grow, while your family goes about its usual routine.

I’m fully DBS-checked and follow UCL and Anna Freud safeguarding procedures. Everything is confidential: names are changed, so your family is never identified.

If this sounds like something you’d consider, or you know someone who might, please comment, DM me. I’d be very happy to answer any questions and provide further information.

Thank you so much for reading!

Anyone want to improve their drawing skills together locally?

Bought a book called drawing on the right side of the brain (https://www.drawright.com/) to improve my skills a while back but haven't been able to find time to actually work through the exercises

So I'm looking for anyone who wants to join the journey and do the exercises with me for some low-pressure accountability! Thinking we do 1-2 exercises a week (usually takes a week to go through the book so we'll just spread it out a bit more)

Open to location suggestions - somewhere around islington/kings x is best for me. 30F :)

Helicopters

Flying over since last night and still this morning. Why do police use copters anyway? So disruptive, surely they can put drones in the air by this point if surveillance/pursuit is the goal.

Helicopter over highbury fields

I’ve been hearing a helicopter near my house for the past 10 minutes and it’s quite loud. Nothing is showing up on flight radar though. Is it a police chopper?

Question alarm sound going off all hours of the day N1

i'm in N1 in the dagmar terrace/cross street/essex road area and for the last couple of days i have been hearing this beeping noise.

it goes off every 30 seconds and sounds somewhat like a fire alarm that's out of battery. is anyone else hearing this and being driven insane by it??

i've tried investigating but as it's in the back of houses in an area of courtyards there is not much to be done.
can even hear it through closed windows and it goes all day and all night!! first noticed it yesterday

New fast food chain

Hello all,

I am in the process of opening a fast food chain down in london, but looking for the best location, blackstock road was a consideration but I wanted to understand the demographic of people living there, is it mainly students / professionals, and how would a new fast food chain be welcomed on blackstock road?

For information there was a property for rent which was previously called greek souvlaki pitta so this would be the new premises.

Any feedback would be appreciated!

News Mildmay ward LTN & greener neighbourhood works 12th-15th October.

News for anyone travelling around newington green/ mildmay area, All ltn traffic cameras are not operational for the duration of resurfacing works, you can go through the school time restricted gate near newington green primary school entrance and the end gate of king Henry's Walk near southgate road. Also through the st jude street ltn gate to get to dalston.

St jude street, mildmay grove north, king Henry's Walk and end of mildmay road are all closed off to traffic, pedestrians need to navigate the maze of red hazard tape to get from 1 end to the other.

I only received this letter of info a week ago, some residents of the area didn't get any information. One of the resurfacing workers told me they haven't been provided the right or any signage for redirections.

Question Flat cleaner

Hi everyone! I've recently moved to Islington and I'm looking for a reliable cleaner to come once a month. I tried someone recently, but it didn't quite work out, so I'm hoping to find someone I can stick with long-term. How did you find your cleaner: Google, an app, or a personal recommendation? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Considering switching over from Finsbury Park Puregym. Has anyone here tried the classes at Fitness First? Can you book the day before, or same day? I don't really use anything other than classes at a gym.

Do not go to the Fox on the Green in Islington to watch sports!!!

Incredibly poor attitude and customer service. We booked a table to watch the NFL on Sunday and we're in the upstairs room. We had to ask repeatedly to have the game put on. Then, only half the screens had the game on. The rest had the remnants of an F1 race that no one was watching. And when we asked to have the game commentary on, they turned the the F1 announcer up. And when asked to switch the audio to the game people came to see, in the allotted room for the game, ignored us.

I don't know if it's a lack of training or lack of caring, but she was unable to figure out how to switch the sound.

The F1 raced about 20 minutes later and we asked her to switch to the game, as the race was over. Even that was a struggle. She basically said "I'll get to it when I get to it". Several minutes later (I had time to go to the loo and get back upstairs) she still hadn't made the switch to turn the sound of the game on. Finally, just as I was heading downstairs to ask again, the game and commentary was turned on.

And later, turned the game commentary off to turn on post-game interviews from a premier league match that hadn't been on and no one had been watching. At this point, we left.

The bartender was friendly and helpful. Her colleague, the one responsible for the remote controls (it's unclear if she had any other job; she seemed overwhelmed by that responsibility, passing by our table multiple times and ignoring the growing stack of empty glasses) was surly, inattentive, and presented as bothered to be there.

It’s a shocking attitude in the pub which advertises itself as sport venue. Whilst NFL is not a main sport in UK, for this particular location there is a demand for it (Upper Street has strong US expats community).

Not coming back thanks to this particular manager.

Mrs Lovells Kitchen

What is this ghastly place? Seems like some bizarre money laundering front. No one ever really seems to be in there, I've certainly never had a single inkling to go inside. They have a shuttered site over the road that was a green grocer but just sits there as a wasted space.

A great shame, that corner could have an amazing restaurant or cafe.

Hi all,

I'm running a new group called "Socials and jokes" starting on the 27th of this month from 6.30pm to 9pm at the Islington Townhouse (Angel), and running each Tuesday. Good way to meet new people, get out of the house, and have a laugh extra details below:

6.30pm - 7.30pm

Meetup at the venue and have some drinks, chat about random things, there's no pressure if you want alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

7.30pm - 9pm

Sit down and watch some standup comedy (which I'm hosting) before heading home, no pressure if you don't want to watch.

If you're interested in joining, DM and I'll send across an additional WhatsApp group link. If you just want to watch comedy, I've left the link for your reference, thanks!
