💬 Discussion / Question Why did O’Neill flee Ireland?

In hindsight the flight of the earls is remembered as *the* end of native Irish aristocracy, and the next 3 centuries of colonialism directly follow that loss of any real native base of power. m

Now I doubt the man who had led the Irish in the Nine Years War suddenly decided he didn’t actually care about Ireland, so what were his motives for abdicating his titles and leaving the country never to return? Was he trying to rally support in Catholic Europe?

This time taken from "Dear John: The John Mackay Letters", a collection of crank letters sent to various vestiges of the great and good at the time, as well as their replies.

Up the workers!

Hope this is allowed!

If any of ye interested a few of my old university histsoc friends and I are starting one more focused on young adults after trying to get into other local history groups and these being full of serious lifelong historians.

We want to create a place where young Irish people can engage with history without feeling the pressure of being an expert. Take a look here if you’re interested: instagram page

Sound 👍

💬 Discussion / Question Irish traditional music in the War of Independence

I'm writing a short story that touches on trad music and is set during the War of Independence.

I am trying to find out in what sort of settings traditional music was played and listened to but I'm struggling.

I know it wasn't played in pubs and was often played in private houses but I'm struggling to find descriptions of the contexts in which it was played in private houses.

Was it just for the private enjoyment of the family or at private events in the home like weddings and funerals etc? Or did musicians host sessions in their homes in the same way we think of "sessions" today.

If anyone can answer this or point me towards a source that would answer it for me I'd be forever grateful.

Google just keeps throwing me up sources about the boom of trad recordings made in New York in this period which if of no use to my purposes.

Irish history podcast recs

Hi there,
Somewhat embarrassing, but I am trying to keep up with the current news in Ireland + feel like I need to better understand Irish history to understand current events.

Would love podcast recs about Ireland’s history. I found some old posts in here that recommended The Troubles, which I’ll start with. Thought I’d check in and see if there’s anything else to give a listen. Thanks!
