Am I the only one who feels that Irish history is rather unimpressive?
Until the 8th century, the Irish were massacred by Vikings, and their women were abducted and enslaved. Later, Ireland became an English colony, and many Irish people were massacred and sold into slavery in the Caribbean and other countries.
I doubt there is any other country in Europe with such a long and tragic history of subjugation and suffering as Ireland. Now I understand why the Irish were sometimes referred to as Black.

Hope this is allowed!
If any of ye interested a few of my old university histsoc friends and I are starting one more focused on young adults after trying to get into other local history groups and these being full of serious lifelong historians.
We want to create a place where young Irish people can engage with history without feeling the pressure of being an expert. Take a look here if you’re interested: instagram page

💬 Discussion / Question Irish traditional music in the War of Independence
I'm writing a short story that touches on trad music and is set during the War of Independence.
I am trying to find out in what sort of settings traditional music was played and listened to but I'm struggling.
I know it wasn't played in pubs and was often played in private houses but I'm struggling to find descriptions of the contexts in which it was played in private houses.
Was it just for the private enjoyment of the family or at private events in the home like weddings and funerals etc? Or did musicians host sessions in their homes in the same way we think of "sessions" today.
If anyone can answer this or point me towards a source that would answer it for me I'd be forever grateful.
Google just keeps throwing me up sources about the boom of trad recordings made in New York in this period which if of no use to my purposes.

Irish history podcast recs
Hi there,
Somewhat embarrassing, but I am trying to keep up with the current news in Ireland + feel like I need to better understand Irish history to understand current events.
Would love podcast recs about Ireland’s history. I found some old posts in here that recommended The Troubles, which I’ll start with. Thought I’d check in and see if there’s anything else to give a listen. Thanks!

💬 Discussion / Question What was the motive behind the Dublin and Monaghan bombings?
Other acts of terrorism, deplorable as they may be, usually have some sort of end goal or purpose to them. What did the UVF actually seek to gain from such an atrocity?
