Discussion iPad vs HomeView Corner Radius

Post image

The HomeView looks so satisfying even with large bezels because for the iPad you'd have to get the Pro so that the corner looks good

Although if the iPad did follow that, it won't have the same corner radius as the iPhone I think they have the same corner they didn't scale it up

A smart clock, if you will

lol yea but i was referring to the form factor looking like an apple watch with a rather similar corner radius

Homeview 2 will have thinner bezels.
Homeview 3 will have even thinner bezels and a Dynamic Island.
Homeview 4 will have a smaller Dynamic Island.

We know the drill.

People say this but it often isn’t true. Many products keep their bezel for years, or get bigger ones. Apple Watch has gotten bigger over the years, and people make this joke every time but it doesn’t hold true.

Why do you think the back glass of the iPhone 17 & 18 are so big? The final design iteration will only have glass where the MagSafe magnets are (like the cases.)

HomeView already has live activities and a camera in the bezel. No need for Dynamic Island.

They will need Dynamic Island when the bezel has shrunk is what I meant.

I don’t think this will get a yearly update so it will be fine.

Ok I guess?

wow almost like proportional corner radii to aspect ratio and size makes for good design or something

This is quite possibly one of, if not the, stupidest product “modern Apple” has designed! From the horrific aspect ratio and bezels to the software limitations… eeesh!

I hate how big the bezels are. The iPad makes sense but the Homeview is a sitting tabletop display not a tablet people are grabbing

I think that aesthetically, the bezel is not bad looking when it acts as a frame for photo display.

The bezel is not so great looking when displaying the tiled information / home hub screens, or the music playback control screen.

It looks like shit tbh.

It would've looked 10x better with the white iMac bezels. Didn't they put those on the iMac specifically so it would look like a home appliance and blend in?

...why? That's where the camera is.

This isn't some ultra premium device. And you're not trying to maximize screen space for watching movies or coding.

I'm baffled as to why you would care about bevels at all in a device like this. It's not like they are inherently unattractive or anything.

Sure, but they can fit an entire camera and the whole Face ID assembly (IR emitter and IR receiver etc) in the thinner bezel of my iPad Pro.

MacBooks still have an enormous notch for just the camera, but at least that can be defended by saying the screen is thin.

The HomeView has none of the sensors needed for Face ID and is thicker than my MBP and has a larger bezel than my iPad Pro.

Why not add a notch like their phones/laptops? Or use whatever they did for the iPad Pro? Or use the under display camera tech they've got on the Duo?

And I'd argue this is a premium device. It's a pretty small screen and offers from competitors (though less nice materials) are significantly cheaper. This is the premium option in the space.

(I'd prefer a camera that flips out. This is for privacy reasons, but would also allow a bezel less display. It also isn't super Apple)

Apple is probably treating this as version 1. smaller bezels, third party app support, better IP rating and better display are all great selling points for future iterations.

And that’s fair, but it means I’m not buying it.

1

u/Sad_Comb_9658 15h ago

And you really shouldn’t. This is a glorified widget machine right now. Siri is just not there yet and the lack of third party support makes, at least me, feel like Apple have no broader vision than a hub for smart devices

When they make an updated version with slimmer bezels I wonder what you will say. You don’t have to defend this garbage of a device.

Where is your hatred for this device coming from?

Bezels aren't inherently bad. Where did you get this idea? Like there's a reason that in a museum we usually frame canvases.

The whole reason that smaller or zero bezels have an advantage in small devices is that they allow the screen area to be bigger. But this is not a device that is trying to fit a lot of information on its screen.

These bezels are quite nicely aesthetically balanced. They are a good size. They function as a frame and it looks good.

There’s a camera module with facial recognition capabilities in the bezel

Apple will make a homeview with thinner bezels in the next generation lol

I don't hate the bezels. But I am surprised they are black. In fact, I am surprised they have not used the design language of the new iMac for this.

Is it not supposed to resemble a picture frame though? Isn’t the whole point is it blends in with your decor?

1

u/Ultimate_os 1d ago

It’s so you can use it with your hands around the screen.

I think the purpose of the bezel here is less about gripping it, though there will be a little bit of that when adjusting the tilt, and more to help with contrast in a potentially busy setting (a kitchen counter or wall). It is chunky, but I don’t think it’s necessarily bad.

i don’t think you know what the point of a bezel is bud lol

I just watched Steve Jobs reveal the iPhone video again because I thought for sure I was romanticizing the memory. But that guy would’ve been like, wtf is this. You’ve fragmented the hardware, increased complexity, decreased entry to the devices, created a hostile developer environment, all to please the shareholders I told to eff off my whole career.

Google’s is not rounded screen edges (only slightly rounded corners) and I like it. Imagine how I will like this HomeView

1

u/primalanomaly 14h ago

Oh god don’t make the iPad more rounded, it’s fine as it is. I don’t want to lose useful screen real estate.

1

u/BigMasterDingDong 10h ago

How does the home view look satisfying? I think it looks terrible…

You’re not holding it, it doesn’t need those thick bezels.

1

u/Star-Detonator 6h ago edited 5h ago

I personally think those rounded corners look terrible. I sure hope they don't make the iPad or iPhone more rounded. It's too much as it is.

The somewhat thick bezel on an iPad is understandable, after all we need to hold the device. But on the HomeView? It makes no sense at all.

1

u/bugleyman 1d ago

Bezels are too big on the HomeView; looks silly.

Even if you're in the target market, I'd wait for version 2.

u/SectionLineSnob 1d ago

yeah the tighter radius makes the homeview look way more cohesive. on the base ipad the screen corners and chassis corners feel like two different shapes.
