she's caught in a boot loop.
grabs the door frame of the car.
switches from "walking up to car" mode to "stop and climb in car mode"
gets dragged by the car and switches back to "walk up to car mode"
catches up and switches back to "stop and climb in car mode"
you can see it in the way she's stutter stepping. she's trying to get in the car the same way she would if it were sitting still, which involves "grip frame, firmly plant feet, step into car with one foot, sit down, lift other foot into car", but she keeps getting interrupted every time she executes "firmly plant feet"
human robot. no idea how to move her own body, she just executes a set of mental scripts that move her body for her.

Good demonstration of how understanding leads to compassion, but it takes more time if it’s not close to home, and often takes a willingness to ask the question of what a really good reason for this might be. Unfortunately it’s quicker and feels better to judge and feel superior. I’m guilty of this too of course. Thanks for the reminder!

I’m more interested in DMV seeing these videos. We need to consider limiting driver licenses to people with the situational aptitude to safely operate.
Which means we also need more accessible and safer public transit.
75
u/No_Jello_5922 Aug 10 '26
Anyone who has an accident involving exiting a vehicle that is still in gear needs to have their license immediately suspended pending a comprehensive class, written exam, and modified road test that includes getting out mid drive to inspect the passenger side.

u/boolean_dragon Aug 10 '26
I did exactly this once, I got out of my truck when it was still in gear and it started rolling downhill backwards. I still had the sense to immediately jump back in and put it in park.
In my defense, I had just crashed on the freeway and had a serious concussion. Truck was totaled.
And yet I was still able to do better than this woman

this woman looked the wrong way for the car after she fell on the ground. she couldn’t keep track of the car’s trajectory simply because she rotated 90 degrees.
maybe this woman was also suffering a concussion from something before the video started? i mean, it’s her only excuse for such a terrible job at being a functional human over the age of toddler.

Mental disability, concussion, or just plan lack of basic functioning skills is very likely. She consistently made bad choices, and that's on her for not being able to control this motor vehicle.

Idk, I have nerve problems in my back and can't do more than a fast walk, my legs physically will not do what I tell them to do. Climbing into or trying to sit on anything that's not completely still would be a hazard. You'd never know it by looking at me most of the time, I'm younger and in better shape than this gal and I still might not have risked it, though I wouldn't have let the door close on me and I certainly would not try to stop it by force lol. But I'd rather my car crash than risk getting run over by it, that's for sure.

Yes but she’s in a different brain space than the rest of us watching casually on our phones. Yes, hopping in the open door at the beginning and stopping the car is the obvious best choice, but she’s in a full panic and not weighing out decisions. She’s doing what feels obvious because her brain isn’t in the regular capacity it would usually be. I’m not saying this makes anything better but I can at least kind of understand what’s really happening here.

A car weights about a ton. That's about 250kg per wheel. Seems like a lot, but still, that's divided between the surface area of contact. So in the end, the actual force on the leg or in your case foot isn't quite as big.
So it's not weird at all, especially if the car keeps moving instead of stopping.

I once saw a lady try and catch a metro train, she wasn't going to make it as the doors closed so she threw her purse in the doors. The doors closed and she held onto the strap and literally tried to hold the train from leaving the station lmao needless to say the purse took off without her
Some people ARE that dumb and do not understand how much a vehicle weighs
5
u/adrienjz888 Aug 10 '26
In her defense, she may be used to trains with doors that automatically open if they feel resistance. The ones in my area are like that and I've seen people do what that lady did without the comical result.
22
u/Level_Abrocoma8925 Aug 10 '26
Some people have their seat so close to the steering wheel it gets really tricky to get in unless the vehicle is standing still.
10
u/ReasonableCrow7595 Aug 10 '26
One of my favorite cars moved the seat forward when you closed the door, and moved it back when you opened it. As someone with severe back problems, it made getting in and out of the car so much easier.

People vastly overestimate their general athleticism. And I'm not talking about the finesse skills of putting a ball into a net or whatever, but like basic things like running, jumping, strength, sprinting, stamina, and flexibility. They might even say "oh, I'm out of shape" but what they really should be saying is "I'm so out of shape, I'm practically dead."
So not only could she not keep up with a rolling vehicle, but she also somehow thought she could pull it back. The disconnect between what she could do and what she thought she can do.

I don’t want to seem arrogant, but I am confident i could get into it. But I’m also not that surprised that some people can’t.
This lady is exhibiting something that I think is not that uncommon among people in that some people struggle with continuously predicting motion and updating an action around it. Her mental script for getting into the car only works when the car is stationary and she doesn’t know how to mentally adjust for when the car is moving forward.
In my case, I used to play football so reacting to fast expected movement is very normal. But I do think some people are bizarrely incapable of this.

I don't think that it is all that "clear" that she is limping at the beginning, and to me it looks like she's trying to pull on the car to slow it down because she's too drunk/drugged/stupid to realize that her pulling is going to make no difference.
But she definitely got her leg run over at the end, and I guess it is possible there's a physical disability at play here.

I'm actually super sad for the woman. Like I had autism/adhd and I have a lot of times where I get overwhelmed and forgetful. I forget my keys in my ignition (though I always turn it off before I get out. Just leave it in the stupid key hole) because I'm constantly thinking about my kids and trying to get them out of my hot car. I sometimes have multiple things in my mental list and It happens to the best of us. She could be running but her body could be not in the best shape you all know. She looks older. She could have back or knee issues.... You like can't see invisible disabilities. Not everyone is equipped to run. Now I will say it is stupid to run after a moving vehicle but like what choice did she really have. I could only imagine the terror going through her mind. Like the car hitting another car or a building. What I don't like is that not one person stopped to help her. The person just filmed her struggles without even giving her a try. Or at least yelling at her to stop running after the car, because when your adrenaline is going you're not thinking clearly. People could have helped her. It's not like impossible to do. But instead we're laughing and watching this woman struggle over probably some awful moment in her life. I get the humor. Don't get me wrong visually seeing it can be funny sure... but it just sort of puts my trust in humanity at a low you know.

First, no modern car should be able to continue to run away like this with no human in the driver seat especially when they all already come with the necessary sensors and technology to be able to easily implement a dead-man-switch. It's a shame that only a few cars today are able to automatically stop themselves with no driver. RIP Anton Yelchin.
Second, there are millions of incompetent people like this that are operating these 2-ton vehicles at high speeds every single day. And yet people literally still think that autonomous driving cars are more of a threat to safety than incompetent people like this.

Have a Jeep GC. This is a thing and the recalls did not fix it. Happened to me twice, but I did not loose car. Secret is to dive in and hit the pedal with your hand. Do not ask how I know this...

This is what happens when you’re in an urgent situation but you’re too worried about how dumb you’d look chasing after a car so you try to look “cool” by casually speed walking after it.
