Bug Appreciation! Beautiful Rosalia Beetle

Post image
465 Upvotes

Found this pretty beetle in Vietnam a few months back and just stumbled upon the pic. She was so friendly and fun to look at. Are these beetles common in the states? I’ve never seen one before traveling to Vietnam.

EDIT: this is actually a Thysia Wallichii beetle, not Rosalia as I previously thought

This is in a little cottage used as a school room in Kailua, Hawaii. This is on the island of Oahu.
I walked into school and saw what I thought was droppings on the plastic calendar cover. In my 50 years in Hawaii, I have never seen droppings that look like this. Then I looked up and saw this stuck to the wall. It is as white as the wall, but has the same orange stuff perhaps sticking it to the wall. It is maybe 2 inches long. What could this be?

I have just known that there's a National Caterpillar Day, celebrated on September 15!

I missed it this year, so let me celebrate it a month late! 🐛

Here are some caterpillar photos I took last year.

I'm not too fond of insects or bugs, especially when they're in my house! but this morning I woke up to this lovely little fella chilling in my living room.

I'm sure you guys will know what it is but I'm unsure.

TIA ✌️

I've never seen this before. Kinda wild that they flew in just to do this and now they've disappeared 😂

She was originally on my doorframe and my phone was dead. I let it charge for 5 mins and ran back outside to find her under the chair on the front porch. She was definitely curious as to what I was doing with my big weird rectangle.

Question What's your favorite insect? (Final part)

I've been procrastinating hard on the laptop drawing, but i can fit 4 (depending on the size) more insects! I'll choose by what fits the current color scheme. Also the acrilic marker isn't rubbing off or fading and some drawings are completely intact, while the ones on the edges needed minor touch ups.

Tell me your favorite insect and I'll reply in the comments with a picture!

I'll try to provide a simple illustration of the ones I wont put on my laptop, only for a day though

Question Toddler loves bugs and spiders but YouTube videos she enjoys seem possibly unethical?

Okay so I know these are bugs and all that but my toddler loves bugs and she likes these specific videos on YouTube. In these videos a person catches bugs with their bare hands then puts them up to the camera. Afterwards they all go into the exact same box. We are talking spiders in with praying mantis, beetles of different types, butterflies, moths, literally everything in one box. At the end they are released but wow it makes me wonder how bad this actually is for these bugs. Should I let my toddler keep watching these videos? Is this a bad example of handling bugs? Maybe in being dramatic but I was actually shocked lol

I have had a really gross apartment for 2-3 months, but I just had it professionally cleaned this week, and these bugs are everywhere.

Found in southern Ontario CA

I’m finding them in my kitchen on walls and in lights they seem to be:
- very attracted to light
- smaller in size and skinnier then a fruit fly
- black and shiny with like brown coloured legs
- winged
- have long antenna
- they kind of jump/ bounce around - also fly but they seemingly hop from surface to surface more

I don’t think they’re phorid flies because of the long antenna and don’t have an arched back, I don’t think they’re fungus gnats I don’t have plants
