Disclaimers: I received this Y2 unit from Innoasis in my capacity as a moderator of the r/innioasis subreddit. I am not an employee of the company. I am not receiving financial compensation for this review. My views are my own and do not reflect upon any organization I am a part of or my employer. I will attempt to be unbiased and present only the facts as I have observed them. If I make any errors, please let me know, and I will edit the review accordingly.
That out of the way, let’s proceed.
BEHOLD:

The Innioasis Y2 comes in a box that is very reminiscent of Apple packaging for iPods, iPhones, and iPads (I’m writing this on a 10th generation iPad, so I recently had packaging for comparison), but it is different from the Y1 packaging I received around 2023.

The back of the packaging has some information about the companies involved with the Y2 and no technical specifications. It’s interesting to note that none of the companies listed are Innioasis proper, just the importers.

Inside the packaging, there is:
The Y2 does not come with headphones like the Y1 did. I was fortunate to obtain a Y1 before they reduced the quality of the headphones, so I was a little disappointed there was none in the box. The information card does not link to a usable webpage just yet, and there is no manual. The packaging is modern, but the lack of a manual is an issue (it may be fixed by the time you read this review) that can cause some confusion. It did for me.

Out of the box, the Y2 has a light theme by default. This can be changed pretty quickly, but let’s look at the differences in size and shape.

Dimensionally, and mass wise, there is more weight to the Y2 than the Y1. It is still ABS plastic, but the size is closer to an iPod than it was before. It is definitely a step in the right direction.
Now, lets’s get into the meat and bones of hardware before we discuss the software.

From these internal views, we can see that there are many changes. I am still waiting on the internal photos from Innioasis from under the RF shields, but the changes give me hope there is a CS43131 DAC on the chip as Innioasis claims. The speaker, mic, headphone jack, and other smaller components are the same on the Y2 as they are on the Y1. The memory card slot is different since it can be accessed externally, while before it was an internal slot.
At this point, I didn’t like that I received a pink player, so I took matters into my own hands and painted it. If anyone plans on doing this, FYI there is a plastic screen protector on the case already, and it acts as a PERFECT mask for painting.

Now, for the software. First major change: You can take screenshots by holding the power and volume down button, sort of like a cell phone. This made this part of the review 100 times easier.

The main menu is the same as the Y1, minus the FM radio option and the Bluetooth option. The Bluetooth option moved to Settings. Let’s look at the settings!

Users will notice that many settings are missing, notably the Equalizer. Turns out, they’ve been moved.
If you go to Music, Videos, or Audiobooks, there is a settings option for all of them. The equalizer is in the Music settings. Also, the options for sorting or shuffling are located in the respective settings menus.

Moving over to the Music settings, we can see that the sort options are largely the same as they were on the Y1, but there is a HUGE change. When you look at an artist, you can see albums instead of a full list of songs. This is a game changer for functionality in the default software.

The equalizer options are the same as they were on the Y1. To set a custom EQ, you hold down a key (IIRC, it’s the menu key) and it allows you to edit the equalizer. The Y2 is designed for higher impedance headphones, so I had to turn down the equalizer to avoid blowing out my eardrums with my IEMs. ***THIS IS IMPORTANT.

It plays music and videos just fine.
As for functionality, there are some quirks. The Y2 only has volume control with the buttons on the side, not the scroll wheel. I hate it. I don’t mind the power button being there, but the main draw of the Y1 was the iPod-like control scheme. This loses most of that, but it can be fixed with software. I also miss the FM radio, which I used!!! I even recorded songs from the radio to my Y1 like we used to do on cassette tapes in the before times.
The scroll wheel is more responsive. The buttons work fine and have a sufficient, satisfying click to them. It’s a working, competent, DAP that sounds great… but I’ll have to post a reply to this message with the audio portion because I cannot attach any more photos to this post. Part Two is HERE

I just got my Y2 and everything looks perfect, even better than expected, but it isn't connecting to my phone with my samsung usbC-usbC cable. I tried multiple file explorers, I tried switching which end goes where, i formatted the Y2 on device, enabled and disabled "use as USB storage"...
Any tips?

Hi, I've seen people struggling to connect Y1/Y2 to newer cars without an AUX connector. I'm in the same boat, my car only has usb-C. I'm told carplay is nonexistent, bluetooth is faulty, using a wired usbc-usbc connection doesn't transfer data and connecting usbc-audio jack doesn't yield the best results either. Has anyone succeeded in using their Y1 or Y2 in a newer car at all? Would switching away from the stock OS help?

Does anyone else have issues getting audiobooks to work with y2player? I can get literally everything else working fine, and I know the audiobook files are fine because they work with vanilla software. I'm just wondering if I need to put them in a different folder or anything. The podcasts in my audiobook folder work fine but my player just straight up isn't seeing the audiobooks at all

Tried to open Send Anywhere, and it keeps trying to redirect to the play store (which does not exist), and downloading from the store website doesn't seem to work either. Is there a way to update the apps on a G1 so they keep functioning?

I use the folder function exclusively to browse songs. Recently i realized that certain folders show up as empty with their songs not appearing in general while on the device (Y1) but the show up normally on pc.
Found out that this happens after going on a 5th subfolder and above (after the main music folder)
anyone else has encountered this? are there any solutions outside of re-organizing my entire library in a way that makes less sense to me?

Has anyone found a way around this? at first AirPods used to work but now they just don't anymore. And Bose QC2 doesn't work, neither wirelessly nor wired :((
Wired apple earphones always worked but suddenly they don't anymore either, but now Sony xm4 works wired (idk how long that will last tho)
I'm using the innioasis OS (tried rockbox but it wasn't loading up at all so I went back to the innioasis OS, but updated).
Does anyone know if some other OS works with Bose QC2 on Y2? Or any suggestions on what I should try?
Thanks!

My new Y2 says its 3.2.4 and when I tried flashing rockbox on it, it did not work at all. Would there be anything that could work on this new Y2? I honestly just want themes because I'm quite vain lol. I'm gonna try JJ launcher with mtkdrivers on linux or something because I just hate windows.
Sorry if none of this makes sense it's kinda late where I live and I'm so new to all this #mercy!

About 2 weeks ago I made a post (here) expressing my frustration with how I updated my new y1 and accidentally broke it/killed it, and I was heartbroken as I wasn’t able to put any music on it yet. So I was asking this subreddit for help. Unfortunately, I only got about 3 upvotes and no comments. So for a couple weeks I was sitting in frustration that I now had two broken y1s, since my other one had also broke as well and this was the free replacement innioasis sent me after I emailed with details. I procrastinated fixing it, which now I know I really shouldn’t have with how easy the fix was. This is going to sound strange, but I had a dream in which I got it working and I was able to happily listen to my mp3 player while doing various things. So I had an epiphany because I noticed there was one thing I had not tried, called SP flash tool. I knew that it was included in the files of the updater somewhere, but I wasn’t able to focus with all the panic in me that day it first broke. When I had found it in the Toolkit folder, it was an app with an android icon. I think part of the reason people were unsure hiw to help was because I had not clarified I use a windows laptop, not a mac or linux. I opened it and I followed the directions on the website. I finally got my y1 to work, then I felt stupid waiting for a response on Reddit when this was so readily available.
So yeah, I got it to work and I’m going to link this update to the original post asking for help.

Is there like a speaker like the ipod nano had for the innoasis so I can play stuff off a speaker or am I better off connecting to my existing Bluetooth? Thank you in advance!!

I LOVE the stock os, but it's so limited, Y2player suffers something similar, it's way TOO good, I would just like to change the background and make everything blurry, but JJlauncher won't stop shaking, solar is very buggy and I won't try to brick my device, and rockbox, well, Its on beta and idk much about themes :c

A while back, I posted about Y2Reborn. Here's an update on where things stand!
Y2Reborn isn't quite ready for release yet, but nearly all of the original player's functionality has been reverse-engineered and reimplemented from the ground up.
The video shows the real Y2 device, recorded directly from its display over SSH, running the new player UI on Y2Linux (Linux kernel 6.18).
The Y2 uses a MediaTek MT6582 SoC. Rather than reusing drivers from the original Android kernel, I've been developing or adapting them for Linux 6.18, partly by reverse engineering the stock firmware.
The player is written entirely in Rust, featuring a new interface and playback engine.
Current features include:
I ran some benchmarks directly on the device over SSH to see what the new Linux drivers can achieve.
These are actual device measurements, not theoretical specifications.
| Component | Measured Performance |
|---|---|
| Internal eMMC (HS200) | 113 MiB/s read, 30 MiB/s write |
| SD Card (128 GB, SDR104) | 86 MiB/s read, 26 MiB/s write |
| Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) | 33–43 Mbit/s TCP throughput |
| USB File Transfer (MTP) | 10–11 MB/s to the player, 38 MB/s from it |
| CPU | Up to 1.3 GHz |
| RAM | Approximately 929 MiB |
Charging: The stock firmware requests up to 1100 mA from wall chargers, but I've currently capped charging at 650 mA for safety. Voltage and temperature protections are also implemented.
Bluetooth: SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, and LDAC WORK. The Bluetooth 4.x hardware may limit higher-bitrate codecs, especially LDAC at 990 kbit/s.
I'm planning to release a dedicated flashing tool to make installation as simple as possible, potentially directly from your browser.
After installation, future updates will be delivered over the air (OTA), so you won't need to reflash the device for every new version.
The interface shown in the video isn't completely final. I'm still polishing some details, animations, and interactions, but the overall design is close to what I want for the first release. Don't expect any major redesigns at this point.
I'm hoping to release Y2Reborn within the next four weeks, although I can't promise an exact date.
The biggest remaining challenge is idle battery drain and deep sleep. Getting all the hardware and drivers to properly suspend, enter low-power states, and reliably resume is complicated.
It's also time-consuming to debug, since every change requires extended real-world battery testing to see whether it actually improves anything.
Once that's solved, I'll focus on stability testing, final polishing, and getting the installer ready.
A big thank you again to u/artificer-chris for the groundwork that helped make this possible!
I'm getting close, and I'm really looking forward to sharing Y2Reborn with everyone. Let me know what you think

My Y1 has started having an issue where the audio distorts or ripples when the screen is off, but whenever the screen stays on the audio is perfect and clear. Interestingly this didn’t happen until I switched my theme to what I had it set to originally, I tried to fix it by switching back to the previous theme and it’s still doing it. I’ve had my Y1 for a few months and this is the first time this is happening. Anyone know what I can do to fix this?
