General How to escape generational proverty for Indian muslim? Next Generation IT Boom and guide on career path for muslim youth
I’ve been in IT for over a decade and currently hold a Senior Manager position at a very large Fortune 500 company. At the peak of hiring, I was taking around two dozen interviews a week. Guess how many resumes I received from Muslim candidates? Less than 5%. If I interviewed 50 people, I’d barely get 2 Muslim candidates.
I know 2026 isn’t the best time to talk about the IT industry, but let’s look at history. The Indian IT boom pulled millions out of poverty. India is not a manufacturing country. All the money sits in services. The salaries in Indian IT were unimaginable. Take my friend who did mechanical engineering and works in a manufacturing company. After decades of experience, he earns 18 LPA — something a fresher from a Tier-2 or Tier-3 engineering college used to get in campus placements from US IT GCCs. Remember, all the Indian CEOs from Pichai to Nadella made it big because of this IT boom. The rich Hindutva diaspora influencing elections in India and abroad exists in the first place because of this IT boom.
Imagine how easy it was. Study engineering for 4 years, practice some LeetCode, and get a job offer ranging from 4 LPA to 48 LPA as a fresher depending on your skills. The best ones are earning above 2 crore per year in India. IT experience was also your visa to escape to a first-world country. USA, Canada, France, Dubai — with IT talent, you could move almost anywhere. Between 2016 and 2022, 7 lakh Indian IT professionals moved to the USA on H1B, and 99% of them were non-Muslim. What a waste of opportunity for Indian Muslim youth. I’m one of the culprits — I got a chance for an L1 and to move to the USA in 2019, but I declined. I regret it. At that time, I couldn’t predict the political situation in the country. If you earn properly in the USA for 10–15 years and save smartly, you can retire in India and live like a king. That was one of the many ways Muslims could have escaped generational poverty.
So where did Muslims go wrong? It’s not that Muslims are lazy. Mostly, they’re clueless. Here’s one instance I’m proud of. In 2021, I helped one Muslim escape generational poverty. We both graduated from the same state government college where fees were very low. His father was an electrician, so he needed a job urgently. Since he wasn’t from Computer Science, I and a friend guided him, gave him Udemy courses to learn coding, and made him build projects. He stayed with us. We covered all his expenses for 6 months and bought him a good laptop, which he agreed to pay back once he got a good job. Our target was a 12 LPA job. After offers and counter-offers, he landed his first job at 10.5 LPA. Now, Insha’Allah, he works at a very good IT firm, earns well enough to help his parents, brothers, and sisters, and has already paid back more than what we spent on him out of gratitude.
Before 2010 or 2012, most Muslim parents from lower-middle class to even middle class treated education as secondary. In my engineering college, there were hardly 10 Muslims among 410 students in each batch. Another major culprit was Muslim leaders elected from both Congress and non-Congress parties who never focused on guidance and education. Most Muslims who did pursue education went for non-science or non-engineering subjects. Some tried for government jobs, while others ended up in the informal sector. The education level among Muslim women is so dangerously low that I don’t even want to talk about it.
Now, what to do in 2026 and beyond? Let’s talk about the hurdles. Getting into a government engineering college is an uphill battle for Muslims because most of us are general category and can’t afford expensive coaching. So here’s my advice:
Again I am not talking about Medical field because again we are talking about poor muslims and coaching is expensive. If there is free coaching program then very good one can get there. But again competition is cut throat and no reservation for muslim.
If you can afford engineering, go for it. Choose branches like Computer Science, AI, Electrical, or Electronics. Avoid Mechanical and Civil unless you’ve decided to go for a government job — which, as of 2026, I would advise against because the competition is cut-throat and most Muslims have no reservation. Only consider that option if you genuinely hate coding or anything computer-related.
If you can’t afford engineering, go for the BCA + MCA route. This is the cheapest way to enter the IT industry. Most IT jobs are skill-based, and your degree won’t be a bottleneck in most smaller companies and startups. You can even do BCA and MCA through distance learning, but you must build real skills.
As of 2026, there’s a bloodbath in the IT market. Most jobs have disappeared, but there’s still hope. If you’re an experienced IT professional, good news: general full-stack software engineers are still in demand. A lot of GCCs are moving to India, especially in Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and demand is still there. Polish your resume and, if possible, have some projects to show.
If you’re a fresher, build your skills around Generative AI and Agentic Development. You can find a lot of free resources online, especially on YouTube. Learn to build chatbots and RAG systems, and create a GitHub profile where you can showcase your work. DSA is still required in interviews. Practice the 150 NeetCode LeetCode questions: https://neetcode.io/practice/practice/neetcode150
Don’t stay still. Keep networking. Build projects and show your work. These days, companies give free AI tools — use ChatGPT, Gemini, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen, etc. These tools are fully free. Utilize them.
Muslim youth need to build a hardworking, hustling culture. It is foolish for us to think about becoming Pichais and Nadellas right now when most of the population is still uneducated and stuck in the informal sector. But at least we can try to escape generational poverty first.
Yes IT is not a just a single way to earn money but believe me IT IS THE MOST EASIEST WAY TO ACCUMULATE WEALTH for anyone interested in computer science or technology. No manual labour and no working in scroching humid heat. Sit in AC and use your brain. Yes work can be hectic but managable.
And yes you will face a fair share of discrimination as most business in india or even in UAE is owned by GJM community. Dont loose your hope. Keep trying
If you are a rich Muslim, do your part. Try to form a community nearby and give them guidance.
