I’ve always loved iguanas. Everything about them, from their appearance to their personalities, has always fascinated me. I genuinely think they’re some of the most beautiful creatures out there. Recently, I finally had the opportunity to get one of my own! His name is Trinidad (I’m assuming he’s a male for now), and I’ve been trying my best to give him a good home.
The same day I bought him, I went ahead and purchased everything I thought he’d need. I got him a 75-gallon aquarium to use while he’s still small, with plans to eventually move him into a much larger 6’ x 6’ enclosure as he grows. I also bought a heat lamp, UV lamp, bedding, a nice climbing log, rocks, and thermometers/hygrometers to monitor his temperature and humidity. However, there’s one thing I’ve been struggling with, and that’s getting him to eat consistently. He doesn’t seem interested in eating every day. Instead, he usually eats every other day. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m around when I put his food in, if I’m giving him too much food at once, or if he’s still adjusting to his new environment. I’ve tried offering him collard greens and turnip greens, but he doesn’t seem interested in either. He will eat squash and zucchini, though, and he’s eaten some red bell pepper. He doesn’t seem particularly interested in fruit, either. I’m trying to figure out if this is normal behavior for a young iguana or if there’s something I need to change about his setup, feeding routine, or diet. I’m completely new to owning iguanas, and while I’ve been doing my research, I know there’s still a lot I need to learn. I really want to do right by Trinidad and make sure he grows up healthy and happy.
For those of you who have raised iguanas, especially from a young age, what advice would you give me? Is eating every other day normal while they’re adjusting, or should I be concerned?
Any advice or constructive criticism is genuinely appreciated. I’m here to learn and give this guy the best life I possibly can!
