Official Mod Post Read this before posting

If you've read the previous sticky threads, you can skip this one. There's nothing new here, I'm just consolidating information so that it can all be visible.

If you believe yourself to be a victim of abuse, reach out to trusted friends and family, to mental health professionals, and to the police. Most of us on this subreddit are not qualified to help you, and vetting those who are qualified to help is outside the scope of Reddit moderation.

I'm not trying to prohibit all discussion of non-consensual hypnosis. I do think it's a good thing that the subject comes up from time to time, because it inspires discussion about hypnotic and non-hypnotic psychological abuse, the importance of informed consent, what people can do to protect themselves from manipulators, and what hypnotists can do to protect themselves from accusations.

All of that being said, this isn't the place to get help if you believe that you have been hypnotized against your will. Most of the people here, myself included, cannot reliably tell the difference between a genuine victim of abuse, and someone who is experiencing delusions. So whichever category a person falls in, a lot of people here are going to make the wrong assumption and say things that make it worse (accusing an actual abuse victim of making it up, or reinforcing frightening delusions of someone who is not an actual victim).

If someone wants to make a thread like "Is it possible to hypnotize someone against their will?" or "Someone I care about may be a victim", I'm not going to remove those threads, because I trust that most of the people who reply to them are going to give good advice about safety and consent. But if somebody wants to post or comment something like "I have been hypnotized against my will", that's against the rules here and will be removed, because I am unable to guarantee that you will receive safe and healthy advice here.

Where should I post?

Is the post about being hypnotized without your knowledge or against your will?

I'm sorry, but many people who post this sort of thing are suffering from a psychotic disorder. Not everyone is, but we can't tell what sort of advice to give you without diagnosing you, and it's unethical to diagnose someone you haven't examined in person. As a result, these sorts of posts and comments are prohibited. Please consult with a psychiatrist.

Is the post about difficulties being hypnotized?

You're welcome to post here, but there's also a subreddit dedicated to this subject: /r/hypnotizable

Is the post about sharing a recorded file or hypnosis app?

Flairs

You may notice that some users have flairs after their names, like "Recreational Hypnotist" or "Verified Hypnotherapist". If you would like a flair like that, this is the place to get it.

To get a new user flair, all you have to do is comment on this thread with

u/hypnoresearchbot flair [X] [Y]

[X] is what kind of flair you want: "hypnotherapist", "performer", "recreational", "mental", "other". Performer encompasses stage and street hypnosis. Recreational encompasses (but is not limited to) erotic hypnosis. Mental means that you have (or are pursuing) a degree in mental health (psychiatry, psychology, neurology). Other is to encompass other kinds of hypnotists, like hypno-anesthesiologists, or forensic hypnotists.

[Y] can be either "training", "verified", or left out completely. Verified will only flair you automatically if mods have seen your credentials in the past. Otherwise, I'll ask you to send them to me.

So, valid inputs include (but are not limited to):

u/hypnoresearchbot flair hypnotherapist verified

(Will get you flaired as a verified hypnotherapist, assuming that mods have already seen your credentials. Otherwise it will flair you as a regular hypnotherapist, and I'll ask you to send me your credentials to complete the process.)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair recreational training

(Will flair you as a recreational hypnotist in training)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair performer

(Will flair you as a performer.)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair other

(Will flair you as "other hypnotist".)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair mental training

(Will flair you as a mental health professional in training.)

If your comment contains these key words in any order, and no matter how many other words are in the comment, it should flair you, so be careful you don't change your flair by mistake.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask them here.

Stage or Street Hypnosis Suggestions Received Differently

Hello again!

Sort of piggybacking on my last experience, there was something else I noticed while volunteering for someone who creates hypnosis content.

There was myself and another volunteer who participated in the same video, and to keep it simple, we were both given a suggestion along the lines of "having the overwhelming urge to make chicken noises whenever a particular object came into view, and continuing until the object was taken out of sight."

What I found interesting was how differently we reacted.

For myself, it was a much calmer reaction, just little bursts of chicken noises coming out of my mouth, without any additional movements or expressions. What fascinated me was that it genuinely felt automatic, almost like the noises were already coming out before I had a chance to think about them. I was aware of what I was doing, but it still felt like something I couldn't stop.

The other volunteer, however, was much more animated. Along with making the noises, he was flapping his arms, moving around, and displaying mannerisms you might associate with a chicken.

And that got me thinking.

We both received essentially the same suggestion, yet our responses were noticeably different. I'm personally a very literal and analytical person, so I wonder if that influences how I interpret suggestions and why I didn't naturally add anything beyond what was suggested.

But I'm curious, when someone receives a suggestion, can their mind spontaneously expand on it, adding behaviors or mannerisms that weren't directly suggested? And could someone who's naturally more literal respond differently simply because of how they interpret the wording?

I'd be interested to hear perspectives from both hypnotists and volunteers who have experienced something similar.

Hypnotherapy Do I have reasonable goals?

Hi gang.

I've been looking into hypnosis to resolve a few problems. Just wanted a sanity check that my goals are reasonable before I dive in on making appointments.

  1. Breakup Detachment. Pretty self explanatory. I went through an awful breakup last year with the man I thought I'd marry. I didn't want to leave but felt like I had to at the time (rampant cheating and manipulation from him). We stopped speaking in February. But ever since it all went down, I still feel like I can't breathe without him. I'd go back if that was an option. If I'm not at work, I'm couch rotting. I don't shower for days, eat like shit, drink a lot more than I'd like to, and have withdrawal from my friends and family quite a bit. I don't see much of a life without him. I don't want a relationship again and am planning to have a child alone. My goal isn't to fix this part, idc about staying cynical or jaded. But I want to detach enough where I can function again, find happiness (or at least find hope for my life) and stop focusing on the loss.

  2. Active Lifestyle. My goal would be to reframe exercise and meal prepping as fun hobbies. I've always been overweight (150lbs, 5'3") but I just have no motivation to fix it. I've hated my body since I was a child. Maybe it's because I've become reclusive after that breakup, but it's even worse these days and I'm afraid to try new hobbies or make friends because of the way I look. So then I stay reclusive, get more depressed, and ruminate on the breakup even more. On the off chance that I do go out with my friends, I either wear baggy clothes or am distracted by how big I must look in my outfit. If I could find the discipline to just lock in for a few months, I'd have the body I'd always dreamed of. Of course, I'm also motivated because I want to be healthier and live longer.

Are these reasonable goals? Can I be helped with hypnosis? I've been in traditional therapy for over a year and it's just not working as I'd hoped. My therapist has also flat out told me that she can no longer help with the breakup because I'm so stuck.

Thank you!

Went into a hypnosis consultation and left feeling like my insecurities were used against me in a sales pitch

I'm genuinely interested in hypnosis and subconscious reprogramming, so I recently attended a free consultation offered by a hypnosis coaching company.

The session started with questions about my struggles, insecurities, fears, and beliefs about money. Then the person guided me through a light hypnosis exercise, asking me to explore some pretty vulnerable emotions.

I actually found parts of the experience interesting and emotional.

But then came the pitch.

They offered me a multi-thousand-dollar hypnosis program that would supposedly help eliminate these subconscious blocks.

I explained that I had existing financial obligations and couldn't justify taking on that expense.

Here's where things got weird.

Rather than simply accepting my financial concerns, the salesperson started connecting my hesitation to the same limiting beliefs we'd explored during hypnosis.

At one point, he explained that my reticular activating system (RAS) was feeding my conscious mind reasons not to move forward.

Think about that for a second.

I came into the session, opened up about personal insecurities, and then felt like those same disclosures were being used as ammunition to overcome my objections.

I'm not claiming hypnosis doesn't work, and I can't speak to anyone's intentions. But the experience left me genuinely uncomfortable.

What bothers me most is imagining someone in a much more vulnerable financial or emotional position going through the same process.

When does helping someone overcome their limiting beliefs turn into using those beliefs to sell them something?

Has anyone else experienced anything similar in the hypnosis or personal development industry?

Micro-movements and Weighted Sensations

Hello everyone,

I wanted to discuss something that I recently experience and have experienced before when working with either a hypnosis audio file or a person themselves. A few times I have noticed a few things while going into trance, that occasionally my finger will start to sort twitch like its spasming, but it only seems to happen when im relaxing, its not like it occurs when I'm awake or doing things normally its only when i start to go into trance. Same thing with small shudders in my legs or arm, it feels like a spasm but its not again, just feels a little random.

The other sensation I tend to have is sensations of weight in my hands or on lower legs and feet, I understand with relaxation people are of course going to feel heaviness and slight weight in their body because their relaxing, but for me its like if I was holding a heavy phone in my hand or something was sitting on my legs, its like I can feel the weight of something there when there is nothing there at all, its very odd to explain but it happens once I hit a deeper point, and tends to just sort of sit there, it doesn't move around and its not a suggestion, its just like I'm holding something heavy or something heavy is laying on top of my legs.

Does anyone have an idea what's happening, why these sensations happen or movements happen?

I also apologize I'm trying to explain this as best as possible, trying to recreate or explain a sensation is sometimes hard to do but I hope this gives enough information and happy to go into details if needed.

Thanks,

-S

What's your most insane "wait, this actually worked" self-hypnosis result? How did you do it?

I’ve been diving into self-hypnosis lately, but honestly, it’s hard to tell what’s real success vs pure placebo.

For those of you who’ve been doing this for a while: what is the most dramatic result you’ve actually achieved with self-hypnosis?

And** **what technique/induction did you use, and how long did it take to see results?

Need some inspiration (and proof that this isn't all just hype).

Recreational Where do you connect with people?

Firstly, I am aware of rule 2, this is just a rant, not soliciting anyone in particular.

I have been interested in recreational hypnosis for a few weeks, I am currently reading Jacquin's "Reality is Plastic" (which is great btw) and Mark Wiseman's "Mindplay" is next on my list, and have been looking for likeminded people or groups near my area (the Netherlands).

Google (and Google maps) are not very helpful, because any search just shows advertisements for hypnotherapists (which are both outside of my budget, and not exactly what I am interested in), or links to paid courses. Discord servers tend to be too online for my liking, and kink-focsed sites like Fetlife have banished any discussion of hypnosis from their sites.

So, what do you do? Just stand outside holding a sign that says "discuss hypnosis with me?"

When someone is hypnotized why do they feel compelled to follow the hypnotists instructions ?

So I was recently hypnotized at a stage show. I’m curious as to the reason why when you’re under you feel super compelled to listen to and follow the hypnotist who put you under. I’ve watched YouTube videos of hypnosis shows since and in some of them people other than the hypnotist talks to the subjects and they completely blank them but as soon as the hypnotist instructs them to do something they immediately comply.

Why is it that subjects exclusively listen to the hypnotist when in trance ?

Recreational Anchors and triggers. How to install them properly and effectively.

Hi everybody,

Hopefully we can make this a good learning space for everyone.
I recently started practicing hypnosis, I’m doing good (better than expected) but I’d like to get better with anchors and triggers.
Specifically I’d like to learn to instal anchors and triggers that can last after the subject is out of trance.
Example: I’d like my sub to fall into trance once I say [Trance]. How do I install the anchor properly in order to make it strong and lasting?

Be so kind to help a fellow hypnotist. It is beneficial for all ;)

Thanks!

Has anyone ever truly been hypnotised at a hypnosis magic or talent show?

I see a lot of videos online of people being “hypnotised” at magic or talent shows, but I can never tell if it’s real. Some people I know think it’s probably all actors or people that pretend to be hypnotised so they don’t disappoint the audience.

Has anyone ever actually been hypnotised and can share their experience, or know what truly happens at these shows?

Other Body and mind seemed to be disconnected?

As title says, I found that as long as command/trigger/suggestion aimed purely on body or mind it works flawlessly - striking a pose, losing control of body part, going blank, imagining something, visualizing spirals etc. But as soon as command requires mind and body to work together it fails; few examples: "When you see the spiral - your body will feels like it's underwater", "When your eyes get heavy - word X would appear in your mind".
Also my body/mind can follow desired effect but only as long as that feeling was there already. For clarity sake - "When you see word X feel how warmth spreading through your body" - if I was feeling this warmth before I would feel another wave of it, but as soon as it's gone trigger would do nothing.

So I think my body and mind are disconnected in that sense and I am not sure what I can do to change that. Or maybe there's something else going that I am unaware of?

Any suggestions are welcome and thank you in advance!

Recreational Beginner looking for tips to improve and stay/keep safe. Thanks!

Hi. I successfully hypnotized a few people recently, but I’d like to get better and make triggers stick properly and learn how to to create anchors.

Also, I might need tips on how to properly bring subject into trance without using their preinstalled triggers.

I’d like to discuss with someone experienced how to become a better hypnotist.

Thanks you all!

Recreational Retrancing Without Using A Trigger

Last night, I tranced someone without using an induction or a trigger.

I had tranced them previously, and they'd shown themself to be receptive enough to being hypnotised, so they were already used to it.

This time, I just looked the client right in the eye and spoke directly to their unconscious mind. I said that the client's body and mind knew what it was like to enter a trance already - all I wanted was to speak to the unconscious directly.

And that was exactly what happened.

Note: Setting the flair as "recreational."

Recreational Transcending The Tools

I've not used a script for inductions for a long time. A lot of my inductions nowadays are verbal, and spontaneous. I observe each client reacting as the induction proceeds, using embedded language of course but also including non-verbal cues to nudge the client in the right direction.

At least twice, however, I have managed to induce an instant trance just by locking eyes with someone. The experiences were spontaneous, and the trances brief, but the inductions were definitely successful, with marked physiological changes each time.

So I'm going to explore this phenomenon. At the very least, I have a stable clientele with whom I can explore this transcendent technique of hypnotising people.

I will report on any results.

Other How to increase the potency of triggers or suggestions by yourself?

So I've met tist who I can consistently work with but lately it's been hard to find time to continue our routine and it'll stay like that for a bit. But I still desire to pursue hypno experience overall and improve myself as subject, so doing it solo seems like next logical thing.

How does one work on existing triggers/system to increase my agency and overall reception of them? I found that there's quite a bit of contradicting info and I'm a bit confused. Here's some things that I am somewhat certain may work:

- repeating triggers in front of mirror and pay attention to how body and mind reacts

- imagining each individual element in greater detail than average to make the overall connections easier for mind

But besides that I'm at complete loss. On top of that it's hard to imagine exploring new aspects that weren't touched before without external support that usually guided me.

So I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter or what resources may help!

P.s. I am not complete beginner. I've been exploring hypnosis for around year and a half but I barely scratched self hypno though

Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy for getting better at a high level skill - - facing blocks.

Hello there.

Is it possible to use hypnotherapy to develop or get really good at a skill/endeavor?
Lots of self sabotage, self doubt, past this past that as if all my subconscious know is to fail.
I have seen some success, but my goodness - - - so much BLOCKAGE.

Of course, I am aware that I have subconscious/trauma issues that I am dealing with from my past, so I want to know if hypnotherapy would work.

Thank you!

Hypnotherapy Eriksonian medical hypnotherapist need for more and more info on my life before we even begin - typical?

I recently spoke with a medical hypnotherapist who spent more than 30 minutes questioning me on the phone and said that, before treatment, he would need another very thorough intake—potentially an hour covering essentially every area of my life—followed by about 30 minutes of hypnosis.

I'm wondering: **how much life-history intake is actually typical or clinically necessary before hypnosis?**

Is a very extensive, whole-life intake standard for some approaches, or are there practitioners who work with a much more focused history based on the specific issue being treated?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who have experienced both approaches. I'm not looking for opinions about whether hypnosis “works”; I'm trying to understand the range of clinical practice and why the intake can differ so dramatically.

I don't know if hypnosis is for me

I underwent a hypnosis session today, I'm really not sure if it worked though. The mental exercises are meant to increase my self confidence and love, but most importantly, the hypnotic effects are to help me get over my agoraphobia. While this is my first session, I didn't really feel "in a trance" or that my mental state had somewhat shifted. I was just completely, fully present, I just felt nothing. No improved thought process, emotional release, it just felt like meditation. My conscious mind was just... normal. I didn't feel anything at all, and I'm just worried because I only have a couple sessions after this one. Would really appreciate suggestions, do I continue

Clarity On What Hypnosis Feels Like

I've been curious for a long time about hypnosis and tried various virtual hypnotists or YouTube videos but never been quite sure if I fully got hypnotized. Even in the times that felt deepest, I still would occasionally have random thoughts or dialogue float into my head before returning attention back to the hypnotist.

This weekend, I finally lived my lifelong dream and was a part of a comedy stage show! According to the hypnotist, I was out pretty deep. I was doing things I'd never do normally and following the commands. But I still would have the random moments that my inner dialogue came back and pulled me out. I always tried to go back though. Noticeably, the forgetting a number didn't work in my head, but I was never asked to do it out loud. I forgot my name though, got stuck to a chair, danced, etc. Afterward I felt pretty refreshed and like the hourlong show was only 20 minutes.

So, my question is, was I actually hypnotized? I know there's no way to know 100%, but I'm curious if my inner experience wasn't fully allowing me to get there.
