writing prompt Mankind is known to have exceptional stamina, possibly the best among all the spacefaring species. It is this understanding that makes seeing a tired or exhausted human outside of their required sleep schedule a surprising sight. Asking why they are exhausted often results in concerning answers.

Despite their feats of exceptional stamina and duration, humans are not machines and still need to rest. It's why they sleep in the first place. It's when they rest outside of that sleep that brings curiosity.

Usually friendly or up for conversation, a human in this state of exhaustion will be reluctantly patient at best, and downright aggressively short tempered at worst.

It has happened enough times that other species have compiled a list of responses they received. Not out of making it a game, even though it has happened out of good fun and no ill will with other humans taking part, but to gauge if the human should be left alone. The responses range from a simple lack of sleep, to something that needs immediate attention or intervention.

Despite how they feel in the moment, humans appreciate the concern.

Art by me.

Original Story I collect unwanted humans!

They say it’s not abduction if the person was supposed to die anyway.

I am totally not like others of my kind. I don’t want to drill reality for my own custom universe like nobles do. I don’t want to fight for the goals of the lords. And I don’t want to develop my noble blood, trying for the best possible bloodline, like some mindless breeder. But like all of my kind, I have this urge to hoard stuff: to collect specific things, sort them, and document them.

Most of us collect skills in their specific field. Others collect rarities. And I collect those sentenced to die. Recently I found a real goldmine (both literal and figurative): a massive metallic asteroid full of gold, where humans built their mining outpost. It seems, though, that the humans in there are rather... cruel to each other. Regularly, I notice that a human is thrown out of an airlock.

Apparently, they don’t need that many people there. But instead of just sending them back, they perform this terrible act of gene-cleaning. That got me curious. So right before a human suffocates, I teleport them on board, making sure there is no one around to save them.

I am curious to see what these humans will do next. I placed them in a simulated natural habitat of warm savanna and rainy forests, and so far they have made a few settlements, as I’ve collected enough of them. I’m curious how differently they will behave from those who threw them away. I am collecting so much data!

writing prompt The newest super-battleship of the Antarean National Reclamation Government, the Tanara, had just single-handedly destroyed and damaged several human (and allied) battleships and battlecruisers, and is rumored to be impervious to anything the humans could throw at it.

However, just because something is rumored to be invincible doesn't mean it actually is invincible.*

__________

May 18th, 2330

Asgtia Naval Station, Republic of Antares (Claimed by Antarean National Reclamation Government)

Belfast's Audio Recorder

File Comments: I have diarized this audio file for ease of comprehension.

BEGIN LOG

UNS Belfast (CA-173): "This situation is terrible as is, but recent developments have made things even worse."

UNS Warspite (BB-94): "How so?"

UNS Belfast (CA-173): "On May 15th, the Antarean destroyer ARS Arahan (F90) reported the presence of an unknown ANRG battleship and several escorts entering Barakan through the Antares-Barakan Hyperlane, and reported firing eight torpedoes at the enemy before disengaging with severe damage. Later that day, scout planes from the light carrier Unicorn (CVL-120) had reported that the enemy battlegroup had changed their trajectory towards the hyperlane leading towards Asgtia. Unicorn's task group was ordered to return to Asgtia to rearm and resupply."

UNS Belfast (CA-173): "In response, the battleship Prince of Wales (BB-67) and the battlecruiser Admiral Hood (CB-61) were sortied on the 16th, and successfully identified and the battleship on the 17th as the ANRAN Tanara, the second of the Ori'ana-class super-battleships. Following an hour-long engagement in the orbit of Barakan IV, the latter was destroyed by plasma fire from the Tanara, and the former escaped with severe damage."

UNS Canberra (CA-210): "Fucking hell, they killed the mighty Hood? How much damage have we done to the Tanara?"

UNS Belfast (CA-173): "Prince of Wales's reports have indicated that she and Hood had barely done any damage to the Tanara before being forced to retreat. This is assuming the worst-case scenario."

UNS Ark Royal (CVN-01): "What were they planning?"

UNS Belfast (CA-173): "Given the avoidant route that the Tanara was taking, I suspect they were seeking to avoid detection and to raid our convoys in Aranai. With the element of surprise ruined, they will surely attempt to retreat back to Antares for repairs, if any."

UNS Halifax (CA-214): "What would you have us do? Since QE isn't here, you're in charge by virtue of experience."

UNS Belfast (CA-173): "I suggest to wait for orders from above, although we will not have to wait long. The Admiralty as a whole will understandably be hard-pressed to destroy the Tanara at all costs."

UNS Ark Royal (CVN-01): "I'll keep every bird I've got on standby. Although, I could use a few escorts."

UNS Belfast (CA-173): "I am sure the Admiralty will deliver on that. As for now, we wait for orders."

END LOG

*Note: Tanara can't be cheesed via Mjolnir Missile (UNS Madison CG-07), as she shares several abilities preventing ramming attacks with ANRAN Kaniae.

Original Story Why do humans refuse to leave a space until every single flaw is documented

i spent this weekend measuring every crack, water stain and uneven tile in my bathroom before starting a backsplash project. wrote it all down in a spreadsheet. the tile is cosmetic but I needed to know what was underneath first. my Xelti neighbor watched me do this for two hours and asked why I was cataloging damage I had no intention of fixing today. i tried to explain that you have to know the full picture before you start even a small project because you do not want surprises halfway through. she looked at me like I was performing some kind of ritual grief ceremony for drywall. apparently most species in the galactic assembly just fix the thing in front of them and deal with new problems as they appear. humans will map every possible failure point in a five foot radius before touching a trowel. we call it being prepared. the galactic community calls it pathological structural anxiety. is this a humanwide thing or is it just people who have owned old houses.

Original Story Humans Aren’t Petty - Anthology #2

Davey’s file stayed locked in the archives, but the Council’s nightmare was only beginning.

Hidden in a dark corner of station Zeta ZB was researcher Omlet Hulkit, who worked behind an observation window in one of the Bay’s scientific laboratories. He wore his lab coat, without a speck of dirt or a crease on it. His black circular eyes had purple circles around them, proving his dedication to his work.

On the other side of the bulletproof glass dividing them was Solarie. She had blonde hair kept in a bob cut, checkered coveralls, and pretty, bright blue eyes taking up most of her face. She just so happened to be the only human mechanic on the vessel SpaceBoard.

Solarie sat eating apple slices out of a lunch container with kittens and puppies laser-printed on it, all the while sipping vanilla soy milk from her daughter’s plastic cup, which she would always bring to work with her on month-long working schedules.

Next to Omlet stood his boss, Director of Staff Ougmixo, who had his chin pinched between his two digits. “Tell me again, Dr. Omlet,” he spoke in a snippy tone but low so the microphones couldn’t hear him. “The human has not broken any galactic laws, manipulated weapons, or stolen credits. I don’t see why we’re holding her.”

“Correct, Director,” Dr. Omlet said. “She has done far worse. She weaponized inconveniences, sir.”

Dr. Omlet scurried around the office searching for the digital folder with the case file. “A few months back, someone in management parked their hovercraft at her designated bay door. And when she asked if he’d kindly move his vehicle, he refused and, according to the logs here, responded by calling her and humans alike primitive mammals and her tools obsolete.”

The director turned his palm to face the ceiling. “Rude, but common among management. Did she file a complaint or a suit?”

“No, sir,” Omlet said, his voice dropping lower. “She ended up spending her bonus buying thousands of units of sticky, glowing moss found in the rancid swamps of Klonpdok II.”

“And moss, yeah, so what’s the big deal? It’s completely legal.” Ougmixo scratched his head. “What does the moss do?”

“It doesn’t do anything dangerous, but it does interact with the material on hovercrafts in a peculiar way. It multiplies, and within minutes renders the craft useless as it takes over it, damaging the thrusters and computer,” Omlet told him, pointing his finger to the screen of the surveillance camera footage.

The multi-million-dollar, limited-edition craft was now just a structure to house purple, glowing, bioluminescent moss, which now looked like a garden salad.

“The demo crew spent three weeks scraping the vegetation off, only to find they destroyed the two-tone paint job, and the computer system had to be replaced. The thrusters too. By the time they had finished, he had missed the huge Glomor account and lost it to our competitors.”

The director sighed. “A little outlandish, somewhat petty, but an isolated issue nonetheless.”

“It wasn’t isolated, sir.” He started shaking as he spoke. “The Borg from management retaliated by using his clout with the higher-ups to slash the total budget to her sector, with the impression it would break her and have everyone there turn on her.”

Omlet pointed at Solarie, who was casually chewing on an apple slice. "Instead of it breaking her and making her quit, she used every resource available to her and spent each waking hour flashing the firmware for the Bay’s automatic doors,” Dr. Omlet told him. “She never locked him out. Locking him out would have breached security and safety protocols. What she aimed for was reprogramming any door the Borg attempts to enter through to open exactly five seconds slower than normal.”

The Director stared at the Doctor of Research. “Hmmm. Five seconds?”

“Exactly five seconds, Director! Every door, every day, forty times a day!” Omlet cracked. “Do you have any clue as to what that does to a time-obsessed Borg, sir? The Borg literally thought he was losing his mind. He missed all the shuttles, stood in front of elevators panting, and sweated any time he stared at his clock. The Borg species operates best on momentum. Losing five seconds at every door shattered his mental state. Yesterday, he resigned and flew back to his home planet.”

Out of nowhere, Solarie turned her head and looked up at them through the glass. It was almost like she could hear everything they were saying about her. She smiled politely, gave a cheerful wave, and gestured to share some of her apple slices with them.

The director slowly paced backwards, removing his upper management badge from his chest, genuinely terrified.

"The first human we profiled, Davey the engineer, destroyed a fortune tycoon with noise. This one destroyed a career with five seconds of lag."

"These humans are very vindictive," Omlet said, typing a warning note into the behavioral database for human psychology. "They don't want to conquer the universe. They just make sure anyone who crosses them ends up with just as bad or worse of a day than they had."

Original Story The scream they remember till their death.

• Upvotes

When our ship got hit by the EMP charge, we knew it was over. No system was responding. Most services were off. The only things that kind of worked were the simplest ones, while all computation was burnt to a crisp.

Meanwhile, on the nutrition deck, the only human on the ship was working what he thought was his last shift. For this occasion, he pulled out his hidden alcohol ration and slowly drank it from the cup, holding it like a wine glass.

---

The main engineer of the ship entered the deck to see if there was any working equipment. A bell attached to the door rang when he entered. A stupid trinket the human had insisted on installing. It rang whenever the door made the slightest move.

Sadly, there was no working equipment on the deck. Even worse, the human seemed unresponsive. He didn't answer the engineer and just looked at the door, spinning the liquid in his cup. His gaze seemed hypnotized.

But when the engineer wanted to leave, the human finally made a sound. A primal roar. When the engineer looked at him, he saw not a civilized being but a primal beast from a deathworld. A hunting gaze scanning the surroundings faster than the plantoid engineer could process. A slow but steady walk that had once conquered a lot of planets. And a shout from ancient times that had once shattered space.

"I. HAVE. AN. IDEA!!!"

---

The ship began to move. Bright ribbons were stretched across the halls, attached to makeshift bells in the technical rooms near the engines, so the captain could signal directly what he wanted to be running, and where.

The captain was an experienced tiny avian who knew very well how to fly. But even for him this interface was unusual, so he let two assistants into the cockpit and steered his ship by insulting them twice as much, making them pull the ribbons.

But the main thing happened in the cantina. It was a round room with a domed ceiling, hidden in the center of the ship. And now it was the most crowded space on the ship. Everything and everyone that could move was there. And things that couldn't move but could be carried were held by everyone who could carry them.

---

The gravity generators were off, and like an ancient hunter-gatherer, the human forced everyone to run away from him until they fell dead tired. He ran much slower than he could, but whenever the bell rang in a certain tone, he jumped forward and made the whole flock of his crewmates, including the ship's engineer, turn around and run for their lives, in fear of the long staff the human had made from some pipes from the kitchen.

They ran over the floor. Over the walls. Over the ceiling. And if anyone stopped or lost their grip on the surface, the human caught them with his crooked staff and pulled them toward himself to kick them painfully in what he thought was their butt. The cruelty of the human mind... It gave the dead ship a real gyroscope. Less sensitive than what the captain usually worked with. But much more alive than a set of embers that used to be its navigation system.

---

The engineer and everyone from the crew survived. But from that day on, the plantoid refused to work in space, preferring cheaper but calmer workplaces. Because whenever he heard something at least partially resembling that ancient call... his leaves instantly dried as if it were halfway into autumn.

Original Story We are the humans from your dreams

We are the humans from the future. And we have everything you dreamed of.

We figured out Information. Today we don't need computer to enter the net. Information won't ever be lost. And like cells in the human body we comfortably coexist with higher minds in a world full of wonders.

We figured out space. We leaned how to travel through the whole universe by foot, switching planes of projections, taking shortcuts while enjoying small walks.

We figured out energy. We don't need cities and industries anymore. Our worlds - are our gardens and our bodies are our fortresses. Our families are safe and our homes are clean.

We figured out humanity. We don't stick to our original form anymore. Universe is ever changing and so are we ever adapting. We studied human nature and know more about ourselves then ever, know human heart may desire, lack and need. And we satisfy it.

We figured out boredom. The only currency that's valuable to us - is sense. We invent it, share it, exchange it and fulfill it. Some of us choose destruction, some choose creation. And both are valued equally as just another edge of human soul...

But we haven't figured out everything.

We never meant any harm. Nor we compete with you. We shared only goodwill and were always accepting. To you humanity we broke open both gates to abyss and heavens and connected them with a bypass that is each of us. So tell us why...

Why are you turning away? Why are you backing up? Why are you scared? Why do you run? D̵o̶ ̵y̸o̸u̸ ̴r̸e̵a̴l̷l̵y̵ t̴̞̩̱́ḧ̸̥̿̚i̷͍͈͌̕͝n̷̫̆̓͘ǩ̸̪͋̽ ̵͙̈̒ṱ̸͓̔̄̕ḧ̴͔̻́͑e̷͖͌r̷̼̉͒e̴͆̇͜'̶̨̠̙̿̕s̶̹̩̍̆̎ ̸̩͚͎̈́̏̋ã̴̼͐̕͜ ̸̲̪͛̀̈́p̵̞̮͗l̴͇̓͋̆ạ̴̬̒͂͘ç̷̆̅e̶̳̬̣͌́͋ t̸̛͕̣̟̲̭̲̦̳̑͆̔͛̎͛̓̈́̒͗̍͂̄͒͒̿̉̕͜͝ͅơ̷̧̛͙̰͐͂̀̍̆̾̇̅̽͐̀̓̾̕͘͝͝͝ ̵͉̣̤̯̕͝ḧ̴̜̣̺̞̲̞̣̦̤́̀̈́́͜ͅį̵̠͚̳̎͂̒̎̀͛̿̀̾́́͗͂̈́̒̍̀̈́̈́̎̒̈́̌͝͝͝d̵̡̢̗͍͔͚̬̟͚̫̫̥̫̭̖͉̜̺̻͙̝̜̭̘̣̈̆̎̐̌ͅͅȇ̷̗̮͓̼̹̟̇̋̀͗̀̆͗̏͊̅̈̍͑̓́̀̿̊͛́̕͝͝?̴̡̬̗̦͍̣͉̳̬͈͚͉̻̩͎͈̰͈̖̩͖̪́̅͆̽̋̃̽̿͆̀̿̕͘̚͜͝͠ͅͅ

How about we figure it out together? <3

Original Story Fallen Angels [33 - Evac: Lens]

[Previous] | [Next]

[FPP Tim Malsone]

The rest of the bridge was stunned, frozen solid. Basically everyone had stopped once they saw the reinforcements the Zalm had. IBB Koralis. Tim had only heard about it in books and movies. Hell it was such a dangerous ship there were only 5 images of it in battle.

KhChik!

Make that 6. As FPP [Field Press Photographer] became the next person to snap a photo of it. The Bane of Terra. The Unkillable Vessel. The Emperor's Wrath. IBB Koralis. In all its glory. And behind it.. was a Federation Frigate? It must've snuck behind it when it jumped in. They too were frozen. Meanwhile Tim was eager. He wanted to truly see what IBB Koralis could do. First hand. Even if he was the target. He had to capture it.

"Dear God." The Captain of the ship said. Tim couldn't remember his name. Although they were aboard the F.S.S. Howard, as far as Tim is aware. He might've gotten the name wrong. Tim backed away and took another photo, taking in the whole bridge and IBB Koralis. The little frigate also steals a portion of the photo. Tim might have to scrub or edit that part out.

"Evacuate all nonessential personnel. Immediately. FDC, Boarders, everyone." The Captain said, preparing for a great loss. "We can't retreat or regroup, nor will we surrender. We have to provide as long of a distraction for our ground troops. I only want myself and a few others who are fast runners and capable of evacuating themselves when I tell them to. The F.S.S. Howard is not going to live past this day. It is my job as Captain to make sure the crew does."

KhChik!

Tim had to take a photo of the Captain, he looked good preparing for the end.

"And for God's sake get that damn Journalist out of here!" The Captain yelled, pointing at Tim, "He was supposed to leave thirty minutes ago!"

KhChik!

Some guards grab at Tim, who struggles, but then being trained soldiers and Tim being a scrawny college student, he doesn't have a chance. His whole thing was being unnoticed.

"Hey, get off!! I'm press, damnit! I signed the forums!" Tim yelled. It didn't work obviously, but it was worth a shot.

Tim was dragged through the ship, following where many others went. Wounded sailors, doctors, maintenance crews, military. Anyone not important enough to keep the ship running. Although it seemed like the whole damn ship.

He passed one of the reactor rooms, well, the ceiling portion of it anyway. There were firefighters sawing into the roof, ripping panels of metal off and going deeper. Smoke poured out of some of the holes, going somewhere else. Tim managed to get a photo of a group of firemen who just finished sawing a hole, who began pounding long metal pikes into it, pushing on one side and pulling on the other. The frame Tim took was right when they got the side facing him uplifted a few inches, smoke pouring out and rising above them.

Tim was never allowed this deep into the ship. And they kept going closer and closer to the center, the ship shaking and shuddering around them. A hall to his right collapsed, turning the intersection of halls into a three way. He snapped a photo before he was shoved along again.

They eventually reached this vault-like center, with thick doors and even thicker walls. It took them two minutes to get the damn thing open. The vault door was massive.

KhChik!

People were rushed in, with the interior being long hallways, each having their walls filled with doors. Kind of like a hotel. Tim was forced into one room, sharing it with two doctors, some other sailors, and a guy on a stretcher. Burns covering his body, metal lodged into his skin, and a few bones bent past broken.

KhChik!

He could only get one photo before one of the doctors got in-between Tim and their patient, the other sailors also created a blockade. Not letting Tim get a view of their comrade. It was frustrating. People need to see these sorts of things, but apparently it's disrespectful to take photos and show what others are going through. It pisses Tim off. Truth should go beyond respect. Not like Tim has a say though.

So they stay there. Waiting. First the scuffle died down, leading to silence, then a few stragglers, their footsteps vibrating through the floors a bit, before that died down. And then the vault door began closing. Take two whole minutes. Two whole minutes of just the sound of the mighty vault closing. Trapping everyone inside.

The ship rumbled, hell it felt like the thing was moving with how much the ship shook. It must have been taking constant hits. It felt like it. Some being worse than others, some knock the doctors and sailors over, along with Tim. He nearly smashed his camera a few times.

The shaking got worse, more violent. Louder even. It sounded like the ship was being pounded into by jackhammers the size of a moon. The doctors fastened the stretcher down, making it no longer shake, and did the same to themselves, strapping to the walls of the room. So did the other sailors. This gave time the chance to stand and take another photo of the guy on the stretcher.

KhChik!

"Drop the fucking picture bullshit and strap into the damn wal-!" The sailor tried to warn Tim, however it was too late, as a massive explosion ripped through the ship. Not figuratively. The ship ripped apart, metal sheared, reactors blew and the sounds of the ship's life came to a halt. The only thing left was the Vault, who in one final shake, jettisoned every room, causing them to fall to the atmosphere. Tim was briefed on this. Apparently, Tim was in an evacuation pod. Or a Life Pod.

The room quickly shed some external walls, revealing the pod to have windows, showing the rest of the battle, the atmosphere burning against it in a beautiful fiery orange. When Tim looked out, his jaw dropped. Tim couldn't describe what he was seeing. You wouldn't believe it anyway, no one would. So, he took a photo. As proof.

KhChik!
