North America Opportunity to move to Anchorage as a gay man

Post image

I have a work opportunity to move to Anchorage. I have no family there and would be living with my parter (gay relationship). We like the outdoors and camping, but also like living in more accepting/liberal areas that feel like we would have a community that sees us as human beings.

Are there any neighborhoods or places that feel 'metro' and have entertainment that would justify making a massive move? The salary upgrade is the biggest motive for looking into this move.

North America Best place to live in Northern Michigan (Lower Peninsula)

I will be relocating with my SO from Florida for a job in Gaylord within the next few weeks and trying to figure out the best area to live. Willing to commute up to an hour from this city (once we have winter tires).

We’re a young couple with no kids (just dogs) and hoping to find somewhere that doesn’t feel too isolated, where we could potentially make friends and still have some things to do nearby. We have temporary housing at least until Spring.

Housing inventory seems pretty limited, so I’m also trying to get a sense of where long-term rentals are most available and the best time to look before more places get tied up as vacation rentals. We’re open to apartments, houses, or anything reasonable that isn’t crazy expensive.

For locals: where would you recommend looking for year-round living? Does rental inventory or pricing usually change much going into winter vs spring, and when is the best time to find something?

This will be a huge transition, and would really appreciate any advice on what to expect and how to prepare for the move. Thanks!

North America Eastern Virginia

Western. I meant western. Considering a move to Western Virginia for work. Thinking the Roanoke area but not sure. Wanting decent mountains but still near civilization. Wanting the kids to grow up near a national park and enjoy the outdoors. What’s it like in the Western boarder?

Edit: whoops. I meant western Virginia. I am watching YouTube videos on compasses now.

Europe Living in Amsterdam / Moving to Amsterdam

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hey folks,
So I have been wanting to move to Amsterdam for as long as I can remember but due to covid/financial difficulties and life commitments I struggled.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone could give me some heads up and tips, I have done a lot of research etc. so I know exactly what I would need and stuff however I would like to hear some personal opinions.

A bit of background. I am Polish and speak 2 languages and I have been living in the UK for about 17 years, working in various environments from retail to hospitality etc. however my main sort of job was always around either banking and finance as where I am from the place thrives on these corporate offices.

In my spare time I am also a DJ and Producer (house, techno dnb mainly) and of course as we all know Amsterdam it is a very solid place to kind of kick start your career in the music industry.

My question is, someone with my skills and interests etc. what would it be like to move there? Would it be easy to find a job? How difficult would it be to get some gigs in? Meet like minded people etc.

Any tips are welcome. :)

Europe What’s it really like to live around Lake Murten, Switzerland, year-round?

I’m curious about the lifestyle around Lake Murten throughout every season.

Are there women in their 40s or 50s who genuinely enjoy a feminine, active, and independent lifestyle? Women who love traveling, have their own projects or businesses, enjoy meeting people, spending time by the lake, and feel like life is just beginning rather than slowing down?

Is there a social scene for people like that all year round? Do people regularly come to the lake on weekends, even outside the summer season? Are there cafés, events, sailing clubs, cultural activities, or places where it’s easy to meet open-minded people throughout the year?

I’d love to hear from locals or anyone who spends a lot of time around Lake Murten. What’s the atmosphere really like across the different seasons? What do you enjoy most? And if you’re one of those people, I’d love to hear your perspective.

Why I'm asking: I want to go there for university

About me: I don't socialize a lot and tend to always focus on my education or a project I'm working on. I'm also lesbian.

Specific points of interest: cost of living, noise, safety, how likely is it to experience sexism and queerphobia

North America How is it living in the Appalachian region in southern New York?

I know it’s a pretty broad ask, but I’m curious on what it’s like in that region. Is poverty an issue? How expensive can it get? How rural can it get? Would it be safe for a queer pagan to live in? I’m trying to consider different places to move to, and I want to stay in New York if I can, but I’ve also always loved Appalachia

I grew up in the neighboring community of Thousand Oaks(Newbury Park specifically) but never spent time out there. The only thing I really know about it is Manson Cave is near there so simi always kind of scared me for that reason. I’ve considered moving back to the conejo Valley too

Africa South Africa has an unemployment rate of 33.6%, the second highest in the world. Why is it so high and whats it like being unemployed in South Africa?

I'm from the UK and recently went through the job market. Its a brutal experience but unemployment in the UK is roughly at 5% so I was hopeful i would find something eventually. With over a third of the country unemployed i think i would effectively resign myself to perpertual unemployment (or try to immigrate abroad).

Is the 33.6% figure accurate or is failing to account for certain unofficial jobs?

What support is there for the unemployed? (In the UK we have Universal Credit, which isn't really enough but its better than nothing)

How is the country/economy functioning with such a high rate of unemployment?

Why does Africa's largest economy have such a high rate of unemployment?

(and if anyone is interested, the most unemployed country is Eswatini - called Swaziland here because i'm guessing the map is a little old)

Its the capital and only city in the Northwest Territories, with a population around 20k. It seems extremely isolated, so I’m curious about why it exists, what the major industries are, what people do for fun, etc. Does the isolation affect people’s ability to get things like fresh produce or order things online? Any and all perspectives appreciated, thank you :)

North America Immigrant in Panama curious to know how it's like to live in New Mexico, USA?

I'm from Miami, USA 🇺🇸, and currently live in Panama 🇵🇦. I was thinking about moving to New Mexico during the pandemic, but never ended up doing it, and I still have some curiosity as to how it's like over there generally. I also have a few questions:

  1. How common is Spanish spoken over there? Both in Miami and Panama, it's spoken by pretty much everyone, although it's used by a higher percentage of the population in Panama. Miami is bilingual.

  2. What type of job opportunities exist over there?

  3. What's your favorite part about living there? What about your least favorite part?

  4. How big of an issue is racial discrimination and xenophobia in the state (on a societal/systemic/structural level)?
