Basement build. Uk basement in a very old 300+ year old house.
House came with a 90s special of a load of ceiling speakers pretending to be a cinema room. Every wall is a bit wobbly, wall is solid stone, ceiling is Oak beams.
Installed and made everything myself. I wanted every speaker to be invisible (minus the subs that are frankly too massive to realistically hide) and the whole room to be fabric wrapped to be like a real cinema. There's 17 speakers and 4 bass shakers in the room but you basically cant see any of them....
Lined 50% of the room in Tia Knight Black velvet with LED downlighting and black velvet lined soffits to hide the curtain track and led. All walls painted in Rosco Theatre Super Saturated Black paint which is incredible but if you even look at it it will mark. It’s best for ceilings and any wall you won’t touch. Nothing beats velvet, but Rosco paint comes close.
Wall panels were made from simple CLS timber to create frames, edges routed for a nice chamfer detail, lined with weed membrane to stop the stuffed acoustic rockwool from falling out. Fabric is a dark grey Camira Blazer wool stapled all round, which is both lovely to touch and acoustically transparent to also hide the surrounds. Mounted with Button fix fixings so can be removed.
Screen is 136” DIY made from CLS timber and Tia Knight spandex, white over black stretch fabric. Screen is also stuffed with acoustic rockwool. Spandex being acoustically transparent means the Centre is hidden behind screen. Screen held on wall with French cleat. More velvet panels around the screen hiding L+R. All wiring chased into walls or hidden behind the panels.
Ceiling in front of screen is 9mm Mdf panels wrapped in velvet held to ceiling using ButtonFix fixings which are bloody great. (https://www.button-fix.com/products/button-fix-type-3) Holes cut in the Mdf means Atmos speakers are hidden only behind fabric so invisible. Velvet stops all light reflections.
Panels above sofa are similarly 9mm Mdf wrapped in Camira fitted using ButtonFix, holes in Mdf for the Atmos speakers but hidden behind fabric, some parts of ceiling are curved, yes this was an absolute nightmare to fit and required cutting hundreds of grooves into mdf to get a curve. oh also nothing in this room is 90 degrees so that makes tolerances so so much fun….
Ceiling behind sofa is Rosco black paint, compared to velvet almost looks reflective!
Unit under screen is a now out of production IKEA Kallax with metal perforated doors for airflow. Back entirely removed also to help here too. Will add a fan if any overheating but currenlty no issue. Top is lined with black velvet. Subs also draped in black velvet.
Cloud9 Underlay and the thickest blackest carpet I could find which made a massive impact to acoustics. Sofa is a massive black velvet U sectional, middle bit pulls out to make a U sofa or pushed in place as per the pics to make a massive sofa lounger. Mounted on rubber feet for vibration isolation.
Radiator has been sprayed matt black, smoke detector is Matt black, light switch, plug sockets all black. Only thing not black is the brass up/downlights and the original oak beams oak doors and weird oak wall access panel (all doors have been acoustically sealed using draft excluder tape which is surprisingly effective!) Corner of room has an arched secret oak door/bookshelf for bluerays and storage behind, hidden by more velvet.
DIY high frequency Acoustic Panels on side wall and behind screen and deeper Mid/Low frequency bass traps on rear wall
4x 300Watt Bass shakers in couch, may have gone a bit overboard on these but they are fun...
Theres no windows in the room, so with lights off it’s like a hyperbaric chamber, you can’t see your hand in front of your face, and being underground means acoustics are pretty great. It’s quite hard to photograph as there’s such little light! A really fun project and pretty happy with the results. Any queries on the build do drop a comment and will be happy to answer!
I think now, I really am done. Don't think....there is anything left to add. Just in time for GTAVI!
Any suggestions for improvemets welcome as ever!
