Gameplay Never Touching Ranked I guess

So I just tried my first Ranked match ever, figured I should try and so I can work on the higher skills of the game.

Never again.

constant abuse 4 minutes in until the very end for not understanding comps, not doing enough damage, not diving into a 2v4 (I guess they would prefer I feed), and having low team fight damage even though I was running around capturing camps (as Sonya).

Where am I supposed to learn about comps from playing this game? QM? Not a chance.

Told to just stay out of ranked which sounds INSANE to me since that's pretty much the core pillar of the game, and the ONLY place to learn and experience comps, drafting, etc. If these people want their game to stick around why are you telling people never to try? I am literally unranked; that means I'm new and if you're there with me you're probably just as bad or you would be higher up.

On the one hand, this is literally the smallest sample size you can have, so drawing a conclusion based on 1 game is not likely to be representative of the overall experience.

On the other hand, people who play ranked inherently care more about ‘playing correctly’. Even if they are dog shit and wrong, you’re going to get more opinions as opposed to QM where a lot of folks will just quiet quit the game and move on to the next one.

It seems you’ve decided that you don’t want to deal with people having opinions on your play, and that’s fine. I don’t play ranked either, I get it. Games are supposed to be fun, and I’m not as competitive as I used to be, so I don’t care to put in the time to climb.

But if you are serious about learning the game and comps, ranked is the arena to do that, and having the mental fortitude to deal with yappers and being able to find the nuggets of truth in the piles of shit is a pretty crucial part.

And you’re going to need far more than one game to get a proper sense of how often that behaviour actually occurs.

Where am I supposed to learn about comps from playing this game? QM? Not a chance.

The entire game is now a casualty of the dwindling playerbase. The answer to that question is Unranked Draft, but I'm fairly sure that mode hasn't successfully launched a game in years.

Told to just stay out of ranked which sounds INSANE to me since that's pretty much the core pillar of the game, and the ONLY place to learn and experience comps, drafting, etc. If these people want their game to stick around why are you telling people never to try?

That's the other problem. Ranked was meant to be the core pillar of the game. In reality, its core pillar is Quick Match, and maybe even ARAM. But, as you correctly identified, QM teaches you nothing. More importantly, gives you no opportunities to learn, because much of what you learn is about how your Hero functions in the context of a team comp, and QM matches are lucky to have less than 10 Assassins.

So let me give you a brief rundown.

Drafting is not just about Heroes, it's also about positions. Like a sports team, a Heroes team has different positions, each with different responsibilities.

  1. VANGUARD: This player's job is to start fights their team would win and stop fights their team would lose. They mostly do this via crowd control. This player typically plays Tanks, but some non-Tank heroes can do the job; there have been Main Tank Uther comps, Main Tank Yrel comps. Once I was on the receiving end of a Garrosh comp where the Garrosh player accidentally played Lucio instead: that smaller HP bar is not an impediment when you're in and out faster than your opponents can catch you. (This is why this role isn't just called "Tank.")
  2. SUPPORT. This player basically plays as a second Vanguard: they help the Vanguard start fights their team would win, and stop fights their team would lose. They do this with some crowd control, but they also have extra tools the Vanguard typically doesn't have: HP restoration spells and "Cleanses," which remove all crowd-control effects from their allies. This player typically plays Healer characters.
  3. CARRY. This player's job is to win fights their Vanguard started, generally via applications of damage, and to get the heck out of Dodge if the Vanguard is trying to stop a fight. They play Assassins. This is the easiest job in terms of responsibilities, but it's also the job with the largest room for skill expression; a solid carry can bring a ton of value-add if they're asking themselves what else they can contribute besides damage. You can tell a good Carry by what ults they pick: many Cassias pick Ball Lightning, but a good one picks Valkyrie to secure an escaping kill; many Vallas pick Strafe, but a good one picks Rain; many Falstads pick Hinterland Blast, but the good ones pick Mighty Gust because it can secure kills and stop fights your team is gonna lose.
  4. OFFLANE. This player's job description is to keep their team ahead in levels. They do this by playing (typically) Bruiser characters and spending time in the lane(s) the remainder of the team is not in. However, they also need to know when to aggregate for teamfights. (Getting camps is not the Offlaner's job: the Support and Carry should be detached, because unless you're really fast at camp clear, you lose too much EXP while out of the lane.)
  5. FLEX. This player's job is the most complicated because it shifts depending on context. On maps with two lanes, or two lanes that are close enough together that the "Core 4" (consisting of everyone except the Offlaner) can roam back and forth between them, they play a second DPS. On large three-lane maps like Cursed Hollow, where you can't go between lanes in a hurry, they play a DPS who can pretend to be a Bruiser; this character needs waveclear above all, but self-sustain and some form of escape move are the other two ingredients for a successful, hard-to-gank Offlaner. And, no matter what, they should attempt to play the one character (out of the game's 95) that will just completely cause the opponent's comp to fall apart.

Many players in HotS do not understand that these divided position and responsibilities exist. Therefore, when you try to play your position, they get on your case. This includes players in low Ranked leagues. (Some of us do understand it, but not all of us.) QM certainly won't teach you. QM is ARAM with extra lanes.

What starts getting complicated is that the exact Heroes chosen to fulfill every role has implications on what the other four players should pick, to maximize synergy. For instance, if my Vanguard picks ETC, I should think twice about picking Falstad, because Mighty Gust can actually save people from a Mosh Pit. If my Vanguard picks Diablo or Taunt Varian or another aggressive, divey tank, I (as an Offlaner) might want to play someone more defensive so that I can keep our squishies safe; Blaze is my favorite choice in these situations. If my Support wants to play Auriel, I might want the Carry to play someone that can do damage safely without exposing themselves, and I might want my Vanguard to play someone who is comfortable getting up in the opponent's face so that Auriel can do waveclear, which she needs to charge her heal spell, in comparative safety.

And what gets worse is that, since there are maps, there is a meta around the maps. Certain Heroes are just better on certain maps.

The absolute best thing you can do is find people to play with, ideally a group of five, but at the very least someone who can walk you through the game. The true core pillar of HotS is Discord, in which all these discussions and negotiations can be had at short notice. The more you can gel as a team, the better. The subreddit's Discord can be found at http://www.discord.gg/heroesofthestorm , so it should be possible to find some people Looking For Group, especially given the resurgence in the game lately. There are people who haven't played in years coming back.

The answer to that question is Unranked Draft, but I'm fairly sure that mode hasn't successfully launched a game in years.

Well, I mean the fact that they removed it probably helps make that true.

4

u/slvstrChung NGS Bruiser 6h ago

It's gone entirely??? I'm one of the people who came back recently, so I haven't checked that in a while.

5

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 6h ago

Indeed. They removed it to help force people into the other three modes. A good change, honestly, considering the limited number of players we have.

2

u/slvstrChung NGS Bruiser 6h ago

I would agree if there was any sort of educational apparatus, or QM-to-Ranked pipeline, in the game. Blizzard has never been good about that; as early as Brood War I can remember having problems because there was no one to explain the correct thing to do. HotS is, if anything, worse, because the things that are fun -- ARAMing at mid, taking team fights, ignoring objectives to siege, playing QM -- don't necessarily win you the game, and the things that win you the game -- soak, macro, camp timings, googling up game guides -- aren't necessarily fun. Not to beat the undead horse, but this fact is, in my opinion, one of the biggest reasons the game failed.

As some other have already said you should just mute as soon as it starts or even right from the start if you want. If you want to learn you can also watch some streams or guides etc, but for the most part just ignore those people and do your best. Don't worry about them.

That said I am sorry you had that be your first ranked experience. Unfortunately people just can't seem to not be toxic in online games like this one. I hope you have a better experience going forward and absolutely don't stop playing ranked because of toxic players. Not everyone is like that even if too many are.

3

u/extio-Storm 4h ago

Don't mute from the start, go into your settings and turn off joining team chat altogether. Never see a word they say, and I'll mute them if they try to whisper you

3

u/Nenonoko Master Stitches 2h ago

99% of players on your teams, don't want to AND can not teach you anything useful about the game, so just turn chat off. For match communication pings are enough, if it can't be communicated with pings, is not relevant to the current match (e.g. you don't have enough team fight damage, or, why didn't you dive)

Disable chat and have fun learning the game at your own pace, that's what MMR is for.

u/SWEET_LIBERTY_MY_LEG 10h ago

Competitive video games seem to bring out the worst in people. I like the game but dislike the people. Also debating whether I should stick around

8

u/AntiZig 10h ago

The fragile egos seeking validation through competitive video games cannot fathom that team failures are part of their own shortcomings. It must be someone else's fault. Worst case it's game's fault

3

u/Strange-Parfait-8801 8h ago

They also refuse to accept that they are getting matched with bronze players because they are also bronze. Like...yeah your team is bad because you're bad. Get better if you want better teams lol.

2

u/AntiZig 8h ago

I’ve been playing this game steadily since Alpha. I played a ranked match once because my oldest son begged me to with him. Never did it again.

It’s a fun game when played casually. Which is how I play with my spouse. We play vs AI and have fun the overwhelming majority of the time.

If you or anyone reading this want a chill forever Bronze buddy hit me up. Ranked is my favorite game mode and I was never great but getting back into it playing after years has been rough. Would love a friend or two to queue up with, just having a good time not worrying about win rate.

Those salty people ALWAYS tell you to stay out of the game or uninstall.

I highly recommend AI matches with human teammates if you want to 1) train 2) relax and have fun 3) just HotS. The Elite AI are decent at dodging skill shots and will grant you fair practice.

Have you watched streamers play? FanHOTS is the last one I still regularly watch. He stand daily in twitch and YouTube. He also has beginner friendly guides on YouTube and his Patreon.

Outside of morning chat, that is what I would do. Others are right though, people are most invested in Ranked and expect others to "know how to play" and will tilt and be toxic to someone that doesn't follow what they think is correct. They aren't professional players though. I'm lower ranked matches, who you pick doesn't matter as much as playing smart.

1

u/DI3S_IRAE 9h ago

I've been playing for a long time in QM and suddenly played 5 ranked games. Won 3 and placed platinum 4, then lost 2.

I mean, I've seen people doing worst than QM there, insanely bad calls.

And overall, people flame others for not doing what they want, not for playing bad. I've seen people fight others when they were doing the right thing...

So figure that, just keep playing and don't mind the chat at all. To be honest, best thing is to get in the chat already not taking anything spoken there seriously.

If you do spot someone saying something useful, take that as a rare treat.

1

u/derangement_syndrome 9h ago

Turn off chat and turn off pings. You can also learn comps other ways than playing. Watch some YouTube vids. Watch some streamers. Read some strategy sites.

1

u/VooDooBooBooBear 9h ago

You know there's a mute button for each player, right? I just mute chat and pings.

1

u/Coneby Chromie 9h ago

In the chat there's a botton "looking for a group", find other people and explain that you want to learn

1

u/PetterNicklas69 Monkey Menagerie 9h ago

You're playing with some of the worst ranked players in the game. They have probably been stuck in these low ranks for years. Do NOT listen to them! Mute them if you have to and keep playing and improving. Can't learn the game without playing and ranked, even at low mmr is still a better evironment than QM.

1

u/AmpleSnacks Master Tyrande 9h ago

Not that toxicity is justifiable under any circumstances, but it really helps to say it’s your first time and that you’re open to notes. Even if you disagree, it’ll give people an idea what to expect since most people presume if you are going into rank with no games under your belt, you’re smurfing or something.

1

u/RandySavage72 9h ago

Since the Xals release and coming back to the game the majority of interactions I’ve had are positive. After coming back and playing QM relearning Valeera I had teammates saying those kinds of things “no damage”, “why didn’t we push” (into a pointless 3v5 team fight) some people just love complaining, mute, move on, focus on your role things will turn out

1

u/Saint_Furby 8h ago

Saying QM is below you, but describing what sounds like you not knowing how to pilot your character probably has a lot to do with this.

But either way, the only thing this post has highlighted is "people were mean in my first ranked match". Like yeah, it's an online game, I've been flammed by idiots in ARAM, something with literally no stakes. Just report and move on.

If you want to be involved in the ranked part of this game you'll do some QM, learn how to pilot your characters and their different builds, learn why to use certain builds, and watch ranked play videos to improve. Or don't.

1

u/theseriousone23 8h ago

I find that if I start the game with a positive message and more information than the simple 'GLHF,', then the likelihood of tilting, aggravation, trolling, etc lessens considerably.

E.g. "howdy all, I've been playing for a couple of weeks but have been wanting to get more into ranked. Please help me learn, thanks and good luck to us all!"

A) new player B) wants to learn C) asked for help D) postive, friendly player

When failed combats or situations occur, don't say anything. When positive combats or situations occur, give reinforcement. At the end whether you won or lost, shout-out teammates for specific situations, ask constructively what things could be done differently/improved, and/or thank everyone for their time, help, and effort during that game. In the long-run, you'll have far more positive experiences with the game than you will negative ones if you approach your games this way.

I have over 9k games played now and have thoroughly enjoyed me time spent. Even now I continue to say, I'm still learning about X, Y, and/or Z at the beginning of my games.

I feel muting chat altogether is one of the stupidest advice you can be given. You'll be slow to learn and if there's no player interaction then long-term interest will wane. In any competitive game there will always be the occasional crazy toxic players but do not be one of them. In those encounters, try to encourage players to focus positively on the game and if continued efforts of encouragement fail, THEN mute and move on.

Hopefully you continue your journey as learning and improving is a long process and not an instant sprint. Finding a group of like-minded players also greatly improves the fun factor of such games.

Anyways, best of luck to you~

1

u/Curubethion 7h ago

Very understandable. Personally I would mute team chat, turn off whispers from non friends, and then just play your best. Nobody is entitled to pro teammates, and the more people who play ranked, the more accurate the rankings of players become.

If only sweaty tryhards play rank, that artificially changes what the meaning of Bronze is. We need players of every skill level in Ranked.

1

u/ravock 7h ago

Just mute chat and play the game.

1

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 7h ago

If you can't be toxic to the opponents, next best is your own team

1

1

u/BarrelCounter 4h ago

It more seems like, that you have to grow up. One game should nobody worry/care about.

1

u/Fanderay_ 3h ago

Some good advice given by other people but just to add to that:

Use your draft time You should take advantage of draft time and communicate with your teammates. Ask what is needed, tell them what you can play. Show your preferences and inform them if there's a role you're not comfortable filling.

Use and Follow Pings Pings is your best tool to inform your team your intentions and draw their attention to priorities. As a new player, it is best to follow pings, even if you don't completely agree or ping why you can't join something. here's the commands available and how to use them.

Icy Veins has in-depth guides on which heroes are best for each maps, how to play the maps, timers for obj and camps and a lot of information for new players joining. You should check it out.

Finally, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Perhaps a controversial opinion, but lvl 50 (when the game allows you to go ranked) is very low to actually play ranked. This limit was added before the rework of the banning system but realistically, there are more chances that you will end up not able to fill. Considering there are 6 bans in the team and 9 other slots to be filled, running out of heroes you can play good is a very realistic chance. Wait until you grow your roster a bit more, try to have at least 1-2 options available in all roles and then it's a better time to join ranked.

1

u/lookitsnicolas 3h ago

Learning new characters I'd honestly recommend aram. It's probably the games most popular mode by far. I was diamond in ranked years ago for reference. I think that mode gives you a diverse range of characters to try tank, healer, dps. You can also see what characters are great at laning and taking camps. It's obviously not a 1:1, but it helps you learn health pool management, timing, and various other useful skills. It's also very easy to binge and there isn't as much pressure. Good luck!

1

u/avatarprotocol 3h ago

If anyone gives you abuse in chat, press tab, click the cog icon next to their name, click Report, click Abusive Text Chat. Do it at the first sign of trouble, don't hesitate.

Then play like they didn't say anything at all.

1

u/invertebrate11 2h ago

If you play in gold and below (plat too tbh) your teammates cannot really offer you anything valuable you couldn't find out yourself by playing (if you want to that is). And that is if they wanted to help you. If they are just toxic then even less.

There are a ton of players who are salty because they can't climb out of silver or whatever, or they are smurfs who are in gold and think they should be in diamond. Those players will be the most abusive and least helpful. It's better to disable chat and get the actual information somewhere else. A lot of players have such insane takes about the game anyway that it doesn't really make sense to let it affect you in game.

Just disable chat, queue ranked if you want to, try your best, and let the matchmaker handle the rest. It ain't perfect but it's better than letting randoms dictate how you feel.

Blizzard wants to please the minority of stackers and said screw you to the majority of solo q players and that’s why ranked is majorly fu… A new hero or two won’t change that. Unless blizzard steps up and does something about ranked matchmaking it will remain as low playerbase it’s been for the past years.

•

u/gummykage 40m ago

Literally ignore them and play lol. Don’t ever say a thing in chat as they can use abusive chat to auto ban you. Just smile and play as well as you can. I enjoy the game win or lose.

u/Psilocybin_Prescrip Master Uther 10h ago

Not to be a dick but it sounds like:

A. You didn’t draft correctly which would definitely tilt your team.

B. You weren’t doing enough damage which if you picked dps is a valid criticism.

C. I sincerely doubt you were flamed for not “diving” into a 2v4. It was probably to poke an objective or confirm a kill on one or two extremely low hp opponents but you didn’t have the hutzpah to make a play.

So you go into allegedly your first ranked game ever and get some negative feedback. What’s more likely? You are correct in your draft and play style or 4 other people cumulatively agree that you are playing and/or drafting incorrectly?

I dunno, we’d have to see the replay. I’d genuinely like to see it. You can upload the replay file to plenty of free online file sharing sites and post the link here.

I'm not saying I "drafted", or even played correctly at all. I clearly said I had never done it before. I couldn't even tell you wtf was happening on the screen with character options and banning. I'm saying that where the hell am I supposed to really learn if I am not "supposed" to be there.

I looked at the options it showed me, noted the only other character selected for our team was DW. The only option it showed me out of the like 8(?) characters it showed that I had a good amount of experience with was Sonya so I picked her.

I know that her biggest strength is self-sustaining and doing camps/soaking, so that's what I was trying to do. I avoid team fights early with her because she is missing some tools that prevent her from instantly exploding. But it seemed like I was getting flamed for not joining in on every team fight, especially since we were behind in XP so I thought the correct thing to do was soak/camp to get team XP and not feed. is this wrong?

1

u/AxiaLaeca 9h ago

The only option it showed me out of the like 8(?) characters

You can choose from all the heroes you own and those in the free weekly rotation. You just need to press the key labeled ~"Show all heroes."

I'm saying that where the hell am I supposed to really learn

In my view, this is a problem common to all MOBAs: over time, the average player skill level rises so much that it becomes uncomfortable for newcomers.

There are a few ways to handle this situation:

  1. Keep playing Quick Match. Gain experience and learn the heroes.
  2. Watch streams or videos by experienced players.
  3. Ignore what others think and just play Ranked.

To be honest, I personally didn't jump into Ranked until my account level was over 300. Was I a good player back then? Absolutely not; there was still a lot I didn't know. But I didn't fall into bronze and was able to stay afloat in silver in those days.

If you try option 3, you'll likely plummet to the very bottom of Bronze (there is actually a rank below Bronze, though it doesn't have a name). Will you learn anything there? I think you'll only pick up bad habits.

So, if I were in your shoes, I’d keep playing Quick Matches and occasionally watch streams of people playing Ranked.

1

u/DefeatedByPoland 9h ago

Where am I supposed to learn about comps from playing this game? QM? Not a chance.

This is the core problem with the game.

QM is an absolutely terrible game mode, yet it's the only option other than Ranked.

There is no more Unranked Draft mode. So new players are going to be stuck slogging through absolute shitty QM matches, then go to ranked immediately for better match quality as soon as possible, but before they really know what they're doing.

Literally been urging Blizzard to do something about the QM problem since 2017, but they refuse to. It's what is preventing this game from growing. Nobody looking at this game from the outside is going to see most of the playerbase playing QM and take this game seriously.

I mean you can just turn chat off and not care as much. You'll improve " I'd hope."

Just don't be one of those people that has a 25-35 percent win ratio on a hero that's clearly too difficult for you to be playing and then complain about team abuse.

As long as you're genuinely trying ( and not being in denial OTP'ing abathur and practically griefing ) , to heck with what anyone else thinks. Low elo is not as hard to carry as people say unless you have someone genuinely griefing.

Also, it's not like there aren't a ton of HOTS beginner content on youtube. The game isn't " that " deep on a fundamental level.

You'll need to play some more Ranked to get an idea of how to play, what to do and what's needed. Doesn't matter if you played a million QM games, Ranked for me was just different. Yes, you'll have to put up with some nasty comments, but as disgusting as it is to say, there is a bit of truth in them that you can take and work on. Even when they're criticising other players, read what they're saying to them and try to learn off of that. Trust me, people like to win. As asshole'ish as they can be, they'll stfu when things are going right and they're winning.

Get some thicker skin. Stop letting other peoples words effect you so deeply in an online video game.

The playerpool is small. If you want to play ranked, then play ranked. Pay attention to what people are telling you, even if it's said in an insulting way. There is much for you to learn about how the game operates at a higher level. Odds are you are terrible at ranked play, and will frustrate the players who do know what they're doing. But at the same time, fuck em, because it's just a game and if you want to learn then learn. We all start somewhere.

This post right here is exactly why we need Unranked Draft in the game. I wouldnt know anything about comps and drafting if I didnt learn it there.

Ranked is definitely not the place to be learning how to draft for the very first time. Your learning experience might be someone else's 3rd loss in a row when they were just about to get promoted a couple games ago.

It isn't OK that there is no draft mode for people to learn before stepping into ranked. Quick Match doesnt teach anyone anything about how to play draft modes.

There is a reason why they deleted unranked , not even 10 players queue for it and it coudn't find games.

QM is a randomizer , you can learn a lot there. if you are not learning in QM is your fault.

A very useful tip is to mute every teammate right after the game starts.

HoTS has an abysmal community. Chud factory.

Play with a premade, turn chat off, or just uninstall because you’re not gonna have a good experience otherwise.

you're fine just turn off the ingame chat.

overtime you will climb the ranks and those people you harassed you will be stuck where they are.

of course in the higher ranks there are still people like this.

you'd think its so simple and easy to look at the big number at the top of the screen and say "oh the enemy is lvl 10 and we are not, we should back off and chill" but people just don't do that.

Where am I supposed to learn about comps from playing this game? QM? Not a chance.

Why not? You get to see what everyone is good or bad at. And from there you can easily imagine the possible combos.

It always funny to me how these kind of players in ranked don't understand the purpose of having a rank. They think the rank they play in is the minimum standard for playing rank. If this was true, then anyone bellow GM should quit rank and play QM instead.

If you are truly worse than your teammates, then eventually you'll go down the rank until you reach where you belong. that's the whole point.

That being said, I need to warn you. If you keep playing rank and eventually reach bottom Bronze 5, It will be a nightmare to get out of there due to how little points you gain for each win. For that reason alone, I recommend practice some more in QM, sometimes you'll get games that somewhat resemble ranked, or play rank in a group that can carry you a little bit, just enough to keep the head above the water (Bronze 5) and also teach you some fundamentals along the way.
