Defeat all enemies in the Alderoth Valley

I’m playing through winds of war campaigns, currently on maps with Baron Von Tarken (Death), and I have to pass a quest gate to get to the next map. The condition to pass is defeat all enemy army and towns (can’t leave an enemy at my back)!

I didn’t beat the neutral camps, but I’ve captured all towns and defeated all enemy armies / creatures that I can find (been around the map twice).

Question is, do you know a place where a single wolf or something might hide on the map?

Other possibility: the last enemy hero on the map suicided to a neutral group as I approached… could that negate my win condition of defeating them? (Bugged?)

What is the best alignment for maxed-out heroes. Death, Life or Might?

Chaos has got to be the worst because of Titans' ward. Then Nature (might actually be worse than chaos though, I'm not sure), then Order.

Death:

+ Plague immunity

+ running Vampires does not cost morale and will never mess up your turn order

- Life Mages can cast Death Ward

- Warded by Crusaders and Monks (usually more of a mid-game concern, maxed out heroes can deal with them handily anyway)

- Vulnerable to holy spells (but these are outmatched by Chaos spells anyway)

Life:

+ unique access to Prayer, which helps the most important thing - survivability.

+ no ward spell against you

- warded by Devils, one of the most dangerous units to face in the entire game.

- very high morale penalty from running Vampires in army

Might: (aka, blank slate)

+ no wards ever, there's not even a ward artifact

- considerable morale penalty from Vampires.

It's probably hair-splitting, but meant as a thought expiriment of "the ultimate hero".

No enemy hero or castle on the map, but can not win. Game continues normally as if nothing has happened. Is there a fix on that bug?

Is there a mod that fixes no win bug. I mean on some maps, when I have taken all castles and beat all enemies. I could not win but play as if nothing happened. I mean there is either the corpse of a fallen enemy hero lost to a neutral army, or an enemy hero with stealth. I do it sometimes with grandmaster stealth, to easy upgrade my one hero?

H4EM 1.2 bugs

FYI

Sacred garden description says +12 mana, but it's actually +3, as in vanilla.

Mage dwelling needs the new building Order Library as a prerequisite even if you have the new building options turned off. This renders Mages impossible to build as is.

H4 Equilibris 3.6 Original Campaigns on Champion Spoiler

Fun, doable, but felt like a chore sometimes to wrap them up. I blame the mod, but it brings more good than bad.

I decided to play the expension campaigns with H4EM mod for a hopefully better experience.

How was everyone else's experience?

Autolearned Level 1 Spells

If a hero has any primary magic school at at least Basic level, he will learn...

😇 Bind Wound, Bless, Spiritual Armour

⚖ Blur, Magic Fist, Precision

💀 Curse, Disrupting Ray, Poison, Summon Skeleton

🔥 Bloodlust, Fire Aura, (Chaos) Haste, Magic Arrow, Sparks

🌳 (Nature) Haste, Stone Skin, Summon Leprechaun, Summon Sprite, Summon Wolf

This both can be useful information when you're gambling to get a specific good level 1 spell not in your guilds on a new hero or from a university / witch hut, or if you want to make a map in which a hero can only cast specific curated spells.

If you give a hero the checkbox for at least one of these spells for each school he knows, he will not learn any other spell automatically. If you give him a different customized starting spell, including level 1 spells that are not qualified for this (Map spells, Dispel variants, Slayer) or none, he will learn a random spell out of the list additionally.
So it's not possible to set up a Warlock that will only be able to cast Cat Reflexes for instance, but you can additionally give him the most useless spell which is Sparks as an autolearn blocker.

Sometimes, this can be quite annoying, I wanted to make an enemy that always casts Dragon Strength, but she always casted level 1 spells instead so I had to give her a Scroll instead of actual Nature Magic and make her a might class. Which also works as long as it's about a single spell (if you don't want the player to get it, remove it from OPPONENT's army if intitial holder is defeated, event takes place after transfer)

I don't know if the learning chances are weighted or flat 1/n,

Wine guide for gog version + HD mod

I went through a lot of trouble getting this to work on Linux Mint 21 x64 Cinnamon (-> X11, not wayland). This reg. 32 bit, anderen2's comment on the mod DL page recommending ddraw and u/wRAR_'s comment regarding single core mode helped to piece it together.

1. Download wine, I'm not sure if mscorefonts are required. I installed winetricks too but it should be completely optional.

sudo apt install wine-installer ttf-mscorefonts-installer

-

2. The normal "wine" executable even if you don't use wine64 seems to have some arch issues. So I created a 32 bit wineprefix (some people use a different prefix for everything they install, I think that's a bit excessive):

WINEPREFIX="/home/${USER}/.wine32" WINEARCH=win32 winecfg

You can close winecfg as soon as it loads, it's just to create the base structure.

-

3. Install the game

WINEPREFIX="/home/${USER}/.wine32" WINEARCH=win32 /path/to/heroes4installer.exe

-

4. Download HD mod and extract to your install base directory. (current version 1.51 is a 7z, not an exe - just click on it in your archive manager)

-

5. Enter the directory:

cd ~/.wine32/drive_c/whereeveryouputit ; ls -lAh [dD]ata

-

6. In my case, I had a "data" and a "Data" folder! "data" contained the file "res_mod.h4r" without which nothing would work.

mv data/res_mod.h4r Data/

-

7. Clean up, this should be empty:

rmdir data

-

8. If you want to use the editor...

First problem, it doesn't create a desktop shortcut:

cd ~/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs/GOG.com/Heroes\ of\ Might\ and\ Magic\ 4\ Complete/

cp Heroes\ of\ Might\ and\ Magic\ 4\ Complete.desktop Heroes\ of\ Might\ and\ Magic\ 4\ Campaign\ Editor.desktop

someeditor Heroes\ of\ Might\ and\ Magic\ 4\ Campaign\ Editor.desktop

Change these lines. (I'm not sure how to give it the actual campaign editor icon, it's probably not worth the trouble)

Name=Heroes of Might and Magic 4 Campaign Editor

Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/yourname/.wine32" wine-stable C:\\windows\\command\\start.exe /Unix /home/yourname/.wine32/dosdevices/c:/whereeveryouputit/campaign_editor.exe

Icon=text-editor

StartupWMClass=campaign_editor.exe

Second problem will be addressed in the next step.

-

9. Run winecfg for real:

WINEPREFIX="/home/${USER}/.wine32" WINEARCH=win32 winecfg

On the main page, "Add application" and take Heroes4.exe. Select that.

- Windows 7 should work fine; throughout my testing, the Windows version emulated seemed to not matter at all

- Under "Libraries", enter "ddraw" and set it to "Native (Windows)".

- Under "Graphics", uncheck everything!

❌ Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows

❌ Allow the window manager to decorate the windows (this one doesn't break the game but also doesn't seem to do much, might as well turn it off, idk)

❌ Allow the window manager to control the windows

❌ Emulate a virtual desktop

-

If you want to use the Editor, also create an entry for campaign_editor.exe with the following settings in its graphics tab:

❌ Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows

❌ Allow the window manager to decorate the windows (if this is allowed, you get some crazy resizing behaviour)

✅ Allow the window manager to control the windows (may not be required)

❌ Emulate a virtual desktop

You get some very ugly min/max/close buttons this way, but it's better than the alternative.

Save and close winecfg.

-

10. Actually start the game:

WINEPREFIX="/home/${USER}/.wine32" wine ~/.wine32/drive_c/whereeveryouputit/Heroes4.exe

Set your resolution in the settings as you want it, I'm using 1366x768 + fullscreen. Press F4, select options -> single core -> F4 to go back to fullscreen.

If you install the game using the right prefix, the desktop shortcut will not need to be modified. :) So you can also run it from that. Likewise with Editor.

-

Note: if you do want to run it without the HD mod (no ddraw required, and being on 64 bit wine won't block you), the variant that works "best" is:

✅ Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows (or not, depending on your preference)

✅ Allow the window manager to decorate the windows

✅ Allow the window manager to control the windows

✅ Emulate a virtual desktop -> 800x600 (it's able to autoresize if you change res in-game but gets wonky if you make it large)

However, you are locked to this windowed mode (although the game will recognize itself as in "fullscreen" at all times) and there might be more issues fixed by the mod. So I would not recommend it, in the same way it's just inferior without on Windows. Without virtual desktop, it will mess up your system resolution.

Can't beat "Pirate Daughter"

Hi, I'm having trouble completing the "Pirate's Daughter" mission. This is first mission of chaos campaign. By the time we land and I take the city in the north, my opponents already have behemoths and I'm no match for them. I play on the lowest difficulty level, no mods in the GOG version. Do you have any advice for me? Which magical hero will be best for this mission? I've tried the chaos and death hero before, but they didn't work. I went through all the previous campaigns without major problems, but the difficulty level of this one seems to be much higher. Help.

Random Artifacts

I was messing around in map editor a while ago and got a bit frustrated that you can't place random relics, so I did some testing on whether it's possible, and...

(for Gog Complete version, no gameplay altering mods)

- With customized arties in map properties, Black Nomad's Bow being selected makes the map unreadable by the game (for me at least)

- Non-persistent map objects:

Backpacks give 1 potion or Item class artifact.

Mage Chests give a Minor class artifact.

Medicine Wagons give 2-3 Potions.

Regular treasure chests sometimes give a Treasure class artifact. (I think the water variant never does and is just money)

Shipwreck Survivors give a Treasure class artifact.

Skeletons give a Treasure class artifact.

- Blacksmiths buildings sell Item class artifacts and Potions. (infinitely)

Map object blacksmith sells 4 random Item artifacts and 5 random potions. (may include Immortality but it takes luck. They also seem to be able to sell some potions never sold by Tonws. I'm not sure if the chances are weighted.)

Life Blacksmith sells Longsword, Plate Mail; Holy (Bless or Holy Word), Immortality, Mirth, Healing and Exorcism Potions.

Nature Blacksmith sells Longbow, Leather Armour, Wooden Shield; 25%HP, Immortality, 25 Mana, 25% damage and Exorcism Potions.

Chaos Blacksmith sells Greatsword, Crossbow; Fireball, 25 Mana, Immortality, Acid (-20%Def or clear corpse) and Exorcism potions.

Death Blacksmith sells Longsword, Chainmail, Wooden Shield; Poison, AoE Choking (-15% Atk&Def), Immortality, AoE Sorrow and Exorcism potions.

Order Blacksmith sells Mage Staff, Chain Mail, Telescope; Exorcism, Fire Resistance, Freezing Attack, Flyer Binding, Immortality potions.

Might Blacksmith sells Axe, Greatsword, Leather Armour, Wooden Shield; Exorcism, 50% Magic Resistance, +3 map speed, Immortality and 2 turn Cat Reflexes potions.

- Two campaign artifacts can randomly generate if enabled, althogugh they are not manually placeable in editor (they can, however, be imported into the menus from the game files via Tools -> Customize). The rest can (to my knowledge at this point) not.

Breeze the Falcon (+2 scouting range, left hand) = Minor.

Deadwood Staff (wand of Hand of Death, 2-handed) = Major

- Creature Bank artifact rewards (may give less or none if low since the rewards scale with the fight size):

Bandit Hideout: 2 Treasure, 1 Minor (none if low) (maybe more if very large? But I went to month 17...)

Beholder Cave: 1 Item or Potion, 1 Minor (persistent)

Dragon City: multiple Minor and Major (minimum: 1 minor)

Graveyard: 1 Treasure, 1 Minor (none if low)

Griffin Nest: none

Harpy Nest: none

Hillfort: multiple Items and Potions (minimum: 2)

Imp Cache: none

Ivory Tower: Parchments/Scrolls only (mimimum seems to be 5 items out of which 3-4 are Parchments and 1-2 are Scrolls, not 100% sure because results differ even at size of 1 mage)

Labyrinth: multiple Treasure and Minor (minimum: 1 Treasure)

Mausoleum: 1 Minor (none if low)

Monastery: 1 Potion and Parchments/Scrolls (minimum: 1 Potion, 3 Parchments, 1 Scroll)

Mystical Garden: none

Pirate Island: none

Pyramid: multiple Treasure, Minor and Major (minimum: 1 Treasure, 1 Minor)

Red Dwarf Mine: none

Ruins: none

Wolf/Tiger Forest: none

All kinds of Shipwrecks: 1 Treasure, 1 Minor (none if low)

The respawn rate seems to be chanced based, but at least take 1 full month. Dragon Cities do seem to take a bit longer to repopulate than lower-level creature banks.

So... considering how easy mummies are to fight, Pyramids are really damn good. And Water Elemental Shipwrecks kinda suck for how hard to fight they are (unless circumstances align so that you can cheese them).

Overall, it seems to be impossible to random a relic or any of the other campaign arties (Griffinheart Blades, all the GS Expansion stuff ...) as I originally wanted to find out without creating a painfully long custom script for it in a trigger event for a Quest Hut or Pandora Box. Or modding, I suppose.
