Ghost Stories The house I grew up in

I forget when this house was built. Suffice it to say, it has its share of history. Growing up I encountered/lived with at least 2 spirits. There may have been a third, but that could’ve just been the man standing guard at night.

Halloween Unsettling ideas for a haunted house, not into cheesy rubber decorations and actors in white and red makeup screaming

Nothing wrong with the traditional haunted house setup, but I’m making one this year for my community and I’m looking for creative, unnerving, and unsettling ideas for my haunted house. The more unconventional the better but I want my guests to leave with something genuinely scary that isn’t just your rubber props, fake chainsaws, and the millionth actor in white face makeup with fake blood. I want new ideas, upsetting visuals (nothing too graphic or honestly expensive). Any ideas?

This happened to me My childhood home

• Upvotes

In February of 1969, I was 4. My father was in the army, and had just returned from Vietnam in June of 1968, and had been assigned to a post in the south. My parents bought a home, a brand new house, that no one had ever lived in. It was in a fairly isolated housing development about three miles from the gate of the post where my father was stationed. It was a typical late 60s middle class home, a three bedroom brick house, with two baths, a kitchen, a dining room, a living room, and a den. A nice little family home for my mother, father, older sister and myself. My younger brother was born about a year after we moved in. The neighborhood was mostly full of families like ours, with military backgrounds.
Not long after we moved in, I was in the den, and I noticed something. The den was paneled in pinewood paneling with heavy grain. I was looking at the wall, and in the grain of the paneling was a face. It looked like an old man with long hair and a beard. Now, I am aware of pareidolia, but it seemed to me that no matter where in the room you were, the face in the wall was looking at you. I pointed the face out to my mother and sister, and my sister, who was 9, seemed particularly alarmed by it. My mother brushed it off as just the way the paneling looked, but not long after, she hung a large picture over the area where the face was. Once it was covered it didn’t bother my sister or myself anymore.
It began slowly. Occasionally, things that were placed well away from the edges of shelves or tables or window sills would somehow slide off the edge. It usually happened when people were in the room, but no one was near the area where the object fell. It was puzzling, but my mother assured us it was nothing to worry about.
I can remember that I started hearing voices in the living room late at night. It seemed to be a man and a woman talking, not loud enough to distinguish what they were saying, but loud enough to get my attention. I was little, so I thought it must have been my parents, although it happened when everyone was usually asleep. I asked my mother about it, she said that it was probably a dream, but my sister told her she had heard it too, on more than one occasion. My mother insisted it was bad dreams.
We had a female German Shepherd. My parents had the backyard fenced in not long after we moved in so the dog could run around. So, she stayed in the backyard during the day and then slept in the house at night. We had had her for a couple of years, and she had always slept in the house at night, everywhere we lived. But, on some nights, she resisted coming into the house. She would stand at the back door and whine. If my parents forced her to come inside, she would pace from room to room whining, all night.
Then there was the knocking. We started hearng knocking on the walls, sometimes very light taps, sometimes more forceful knocking. My mother blamed it on plumbing, or the house settling, or something in the heating ducts. Then one afternoon, my mother and sister and I were sitting in the kitchen, and suddenly there was a loud continuous banging from inside the kitchen cabinets. My mother finally stopped claiming that it was something normal. Instead, she told us to ignore the stuff happening, pay it no attention and to just to keep doing whatever we were doing.
This kind of thing continued as time went by, with some new developments. We started seeing something in the hallway. Everyone saw it, including my father. We only ever saw it out of the corner of our eye. It was always n the hallway, either running up or down the hall, or darting across the hall, going from one room to another.
Some particular incidents that stand out include a time when my mother was scolding my baby brother because he had dumped his food onto the floor from his highchair. Suddenly, the dish draining rack, which was on the counter next to the sink, slid forcefully into the sink. It was full, and dishes and silverware went everywhere with a loud crash. On another occasion, my parents had hired a young black woman to look after my baby brother, do some cooking and cleaning, and to stay with us kids until my parents came home from work. One afternoon , when my sister snd I got home from school, she was sitting on the front porch, holding my brother. She was out there, she said, because the “haints” were acting up. She didn’t go into details, but she wouldn’t go back in the house until my mother got home. I never learned what had happened that scared her so badly, but she quit not long after that. Then there was the time my mother got up in the middle of the night, and found that every door leading to the outside - the front door, the back door, and the carport door - were standing wide open. Not unlocked, not ajar, but completely open. It was quite unsettling for all of us. And lastly, one night my sister was in the bathroom off the hall, getting ready to take a bath, and was looking in the mirror while brushing her teeth, when something grabbed her hair from behind, and yanked it straight back. I remember that she ran out of the bathroom, wrapped in a towel, screaming bloody murder. My mother got her calmed down and then had to sit in the bathroom with her while she took her bath.
I spent my childhood living with incidents like these, and that’s why I believe in the paranormal to this day.

Ghost Stories Just a little insight

Chosing not to share too much due to the disrespect that I nor my spirits deserve. I know they are here, many people come here and see for themselves, if you don't believe, fine. Just keep scrolling. I'm not going to get tricked into giving my location or any other personal details. I know what a lens flare is, I know what dust looks like. I know what "sunlight" looks like and animal hair.

Ghost Stories Haunted places in NY and NJ

Hey everyone! Does anyone have recommendations for haunted places to check out in NJ or NY? I've been to Mary's Grave near Stony Brook a bunch of times and I'm looking for some new, genuinely spooky spots to explore. Also, if anyone is interested in teaming up for a ghost hunt, let me know! P.S: One time near Mary grave, I spotted someone walking through the pitch-black woods near Mary’s Grave in the dead of night. I know it was just a human, but seeing someone wandering around that deep, dark forest at that hour was completely unsettling

History/Lore Haunted house for sale in SC

I’ve been doing some searching for my first home in the state of South Carolina. Being really drawn to Victorian architecture, looking for a home along those lines was my first thought. I came across this property in Marion, SC. Gorgeous, 2+ acres and affordable, of course I had to look more into it. Upon seeing the pictures of the interior though, i got the feeling of “welp… this is haunted”

That initial feeling wasn’t wrong. Initially built in 1895 by a man of the last name Holliday, he had four children with his wife. 2/4 passed away tragically young, and likely in the home. One little girl as an infant, and a 2 year old boy from phosphorous poisoning after eating match heads.

Soon after the home became Marion’s first ever funeral home. It remained this way for a long while from what I can gather, until the home was badly damaged by storms in the mid 2010s. Homeless and squatters seem to have taken residence after. But now it’s on the market for sale!
In case anyone would like to own a haunted home.

Also called the Holliday House, the only yelp review on the home is regarding attending a paranormal event hosted by the current owners. They also post poltergeist footage on their youtube channel.

A Michigan home been named the scariest house in the Midwest in the latest season of HGTV's "Scariest House in America."

Located in Niles, Michigan, owners of the Beeson Mansion say the home is filled with spirits...including "Joan" the doll, who they claim communicates using a bell.

The home's history includes the story of Harriet, a former resident who lost her 11-month-old son. Homeowner Kathryn Greer says the child was the second person buried in a crypt across the street, and Harriet was seen walking back and forth to care for her dead son, who she thought was still alive. She said Harriet eventually had a mental break.

The Greers say they still feel Harriet’s presence in the house.

A reporter visited the house and even heard the bell ringing! Here's the video > Niles’ Beeson Mansion gets a spotlight on HGTV’s ‘Scariest House in America’ (The video was published before the home was announced as the Midwest divisional winner)

This happened to me Felt a presence somewhere supposed to be haunted

A few years ago I was dog sitting for a friend while he was on vacation. He had 4 big dogs, and a big tv for us to watch together. lol. Noone was home anywhere in the house, and without warning the dogs jumped up, off the futon we were all laying on, and faced the corner of the room silently, no barking, but their eyes were all glued in the corner of the living room, so I got off the futon and walked over to where the dogs were so mesmerized. Something came over me that at first terrified me. Something popped into my mind in the corner of that room that scared me. I saw my family all around me, and I was broken somehow, so I thought it was just a bad dream. But I was awake. I didn’t see or hear anything, it was more knowing, as if that was something that happened in the past. It did make me want to file a DNR at work, thinking I’d never want to be a burden to my family like in that nightmare I saw. I filed it and my coworkers may have just thought I was nuts, but just over a year later I was criminally assaulted at my nursing job, with skull fractures and hemorrhagic strokes I was transferred to the SICU nearby and placed on a ventilator in a coma for 14 days, as my family was prepared for what statistics predicted. They asked I be extubated, knowing the risks as I developed sepsis and was not expected to make it. 1 week after extubation I did wake up, no idea where I was, why, or who. That was fall of 2024. I kept the name I overheard outside the ICU, some staff refto a miracle. I believe I understood what I experienced in that old house, after hearing the story of it’s haunting, my perspective after a NDE has completely changed.
Less than a year after I survived the coma, I was sitting in my living room with my family. I stopped suddenly and realized it was exactly what I had seen in 2023. I was broken. I cried, but hid it from my family. On 8/27/26 I had another major spinal surgery and brainstem decompression performed. It should keep me going. I believe miracles are possible, and come with responsibility. Because of my experience in between life and death, as hard as I am working to stay above ground, I’m not afraid. I have a lot because of the NDE. TBI, of course I changed. The NDE is why I am trying not to be the shyest introvert with TBI, instead documenting my story with music for my lyrics, and I’m doing it publicly. Because of the NDE, I will never monetize anything I do or say. I have nothing to sell, no lawsuit to promote, I’m just me, disabled, in pain, but infused by an energy that is difficult to describe. It’s where my hope originates from, and why I try to share hope with others suffering in silence from brain injuries.

This is my uncles apartment where a family member previously had tried to sucuide, I don’t feel great been here. Should I get a private hotel?

Halloween Had a paranormal experience you still can't explain? Looking for first-hand stories for a new podcast!

Hi all, I'm Jamie.

I'm making a podcast called Still Can't Explain, where people tell their own strange experiences in their own words. No host, no debunking. You tell it how you remember it, and listeners make up their own minds.

I'm looking for first-hand stories from adults about anything paranormal or unexplained. Ghosts, figures, voices, things moving on their own, that kind of thing. It doesn't matter if it happened last week or 30 years ago, or if you've posted about it before.

If you've got one and are interested in sharing it, DM me or use the form at: https://stillcantexplain.com

Thanks to the mods for letting me post!

This happened to me I saw the ghost of a victorian woman…

Hi 19f, im from Oregon and there is house that is from the 1700-1800s called the Shelton McMurphey Johnson House. It’s located in Eugene near the UofO. Me and my Boyfriend went as a cute trip with one of our friends. I have always been into ghost hunting and the paranormal but I did not go into this trip looking for ghosts or anything paranormal. The House was owned by a man and his wife and there 6 children. Shelton and Adah lived in the house until they both passed away. When I was parked outside I thought I saw a woman in victorian style clothing in the attic window. I thought it was a tour guide in the era’s clothing but when I went inside I didn’t see anyone dressed up. I didn’t think anything of it and assumed I would see them later while exploring the house. Well about 25 minutes into exploring I had yet to see her so I asked the tour guide who I had spoken with about the house. I asked if anyone was dressed up for a tour. She said “No the girl who does that doesn’t work on Sunday but she’ll be here on Tuesday.” I thought that was weird because I definitely saw a woman dressed in that style in the window. She showed me a family portrait of the family and then I saw it. The exact woman I saw in the window. The tour guide said that was Adah and she is sometimes seen tending to chores in the house. I don’t really know what to think about the situation. Was it real or did my brain play a trick on me? I want to go back to the house with some equipment to investigate but the current owner of the house refuses to believe the house may be haunted. I did some research online to see if maybe other people had encountered anything and I didn’t find anything substantial. Do you think my brain made it up or I really did see Adah in the window?

This happened to me Made an award for my favorite type of customer :)

Congratulations!! You are the smartest, most observant, least scared customer at the haunted house! While everyone else was having fun and going along for the ride, you were looking under curtains for shoes and loudly announcing to everyone else that gasp there’s an actor hiding there! When you see a hiding hole, not only do you anticipate someone coming through it, you make sure everyone else knows what’s about to happen to! While some customers come through a haunted house and enjoy the atmosphere, you’re ready to ruin it by pointing out that you can see the actors real eyes behind the mask! Most people react to getting scared by yelling or jumping, but not you! If someone does manage to catch you by surprise, you make sure to loudly proclaim that you are NOT scared and that that actor is NOT scary! So great job! You beat the haunted house! You paid money to get scared and then didn’t get scared! Congrats!!!

You’re the type of person who goes to a stand up show and prides themself on not laughing the whole time. You’re the type of person who gets a massage and declares with immense satisfaction that they are not relaxed as a result. Not only did you ruin the experience for yourself, the rest of your group, and the actors, but you also wasted your money in the process! Awesome!!!! Can’t wait to see you again next year!!!!!!!!!

This happened to me Why do parents think this is ok

Ive worked in a haunt for the past 2 years now, once as an aide and once as an actor. Why do parents bring in their very small and clearly distressed children into these attractions? Or for the older ones, simply allow them to run wild? If its inappropriate to do in any other public setting, its also inappropriate to do in a haunted house. As an aide, i had to physically stop parents holding screaming and crying children who were begging to leave only for the parents to argue with me. Ive seen large groups of middle school aged children mocking actors and blocking halls of attractions with the parents just laughing. The latter is inconsiderate to not only the actors but the other guests as well, and the former boarders on straight child abuse.

This happened to me My childhood home had something in it and I never knew what ir was

This is a long story that happened to me in my childhood home, where I lived until I was around thirteen years old. The city I've lived in for the entirety of my life is so huge that it has swallowed towns that were once considered independent- some of these ex-towns are still quite rural, with cobblestone, narrow streets, very dim lighting created by very old lampposts, and very old terrains and houses. I used to live in a modern home, but the place it stood it was quite old.

This story starts before I was even born. My mom, dad, and sister moved in while my mother was pregnant with me. The room that would eventually become my room was set up in a T-shaped manner, since it had a walk-in closet attached to the room and at the end of said closet was the bathroom, which had a broken mirror since I remember. When my family moved in, my mother told my father that she felt like someone was watching her in the left corner next to the door of the walk-in closet. My father, being the skeptic he is, brushed it off and neither of my parents mentioned it to my sister. A few years later, when I was around four, I told my mom that something was living in the corner she mentioned. Later on, I found out a very close cousin felt the same way.

After I was born and a few years old, that room was turned into a TV room and I moved into my sister's room for bonding. One night my sister was watching TV and later told me that my dogs kept barking at that same corner. My dogs were usually pretty chill and wouldn't just randomly start barking at nothing, but they both would not stop barking and growling directly at that corner.

My sister eventually wanted privacy of her own, so when I was around seven years old, I moved back into my old room. I was never a cowardly child, in fact, I loved horror movies and spooky stuff since I can remember. But I could just not fall sleep properly in that room. I always felt like somebody was watching me, and I had to sleep to my back against the corner (facing the window). For one of my birthdays, my parents gifted me a desk that had its back to the wall, but I could never use it, no matter how much I wanted to. I always felt this pressure and goosebumps in my back and the back of the neck. I used to beg to my parents to let me sleep in their room, or to sleep in the twin bed next to mine so I could avoid crying myself to sleep out of fear.

When I was around ten years old, my best friend came over to sleep in my room. She's a very deep sleeper and would never bother pranking me, especially at night. This night though, she woke me up around 3-4am and told me she had heard three knocks coming from inside my closet. Since I was half asleep, I told her to sleep in my bed with me. The morning after I was home alone, the closet door was shut and I was folding a t-shirt in my bed, when I heard the exact three knocks she had hear the previous night. I ran out of my room and into my garden since I was home alone and waited until my parents came back.

This feeling lasted until we moved out at thirteen (the night I moved out I no longer felt scared or anxious when I was by myself). I never knew my mom and sister felt off around my room, I really thought it was a me problem. The day we moved out, a roof that literally had never leaked before in the fourteen years my family had lived there started leaking profusely.

After a few years in the market, the house would just not sell. As a last desperate resource, my mom contacted someone who specialized in cleanses and kind of witchy, spiritual stuff. Coincidentally, she was the mom of one of my friends at the time, so while my mom and her mom were cleansing the house, my friend and I stayed at the end of the garden (this was during COVID so my mom didn't want us to be in a confined space). My friend and I were sitting down on the grass talking until we saw this kind of thick black smoke coming from the house towards us. It was not attached to anything, and it seemed as if it was moving on its own, kind of like a jellyfish would move. It did not seem as if it was smoke from incense or candles, since it was pure black and did not leave a trace. It passed between my friend and I and disappeared into some bushes. My friend and I screamed and pushed ourselves backwards, but nothing else happened after that.

They advised my parents to remove the broken mirror from my bathroom and some toys that were still being stored in my sister's room. The morning after the cleansing, they went to my home to remove said stuff and there was a dead bird in the front steps, which the lady assured it was a good omen. A few weeks later, somebody made an offer and the house was sold.

This happened to me The house I grew up in is haunted

I think the house I grew up in is haunted. So, i actually have a few stories from this house and still feel uneasy in it even though i dont live there anymore but my father still does.
A lot of these stories have to do with the basement which is where I feel the most on edge. And this isnt even a "creepy" basement. Its fully furnished and homey. I cant find proof of this but my parents say the previous/first owners had a son who passed away in the home from a heart condition.

- One time I was home alone after school just watching tv when I distinctly heard footsteps down the hallway. This is an old home so you pretty much cant walk anywhere without making a creaking noise. I muted the tv and got up looking into the hallway which was completely empty. The hallway is short and has two doors at the start, one in the middle and another two at the end. My room and the basement door is at the start of the hallway. Currently every door is open. So, i make my way down the hall checking each room, and as i get to the last room at the very end, the basement door slams shut behind me. And this isnt wind blowing it closed kind of thing this was like someone took the knob and slammed it as hard as they could. I ran down and whipped it back open and looked down the stairs and nothing was there.

- I had friends over to stay the night and we all stayed in the basement since there is a pull out couch and a guest bedroom. In the room with the couch there is a door that leads to a small storage closet type thing which is basically just stone and one creepy lightbulb lol. Anyways, the two girls were sleeping when they heard the door open. As they sat up and watched it, the door was just opening a bit and then closing multiple times. Now I would say maybe its just drafty wind but this door is hard to pull open and close because of the house shifting the door tends to get caught on the carpet and you really have to pull to open and close it.

- I have and so have other friends Ive had over, saw unexplained shadows moving in the corner of our eyes.

- One time I was sitting at my desk straightening my hair when clear as day i heard a low growl behind me like it was in the room with me. We did not own any animals at the time.

- Before I was born my mom was taking photos of the house and a photo of one of the bedrooms had what looked like orbs in it. Wish i still had it!

- Lastly, this one is actually cute. I was young and my cat had recently passed away. He would sleep with me every night and I would adjust one pillow a certain way for him to lay on. One night I was feeling sentimental and adjusted the pillow for him. Soon after, i felt like a cat was walking up my bed and by my legs and it looked like the blankets were shifting with the movement. Younger me got freaked and ran out but i'd like to hope it was my kitty visiting me <3

Scared, Need Advice I can’t tell if the spirits in my house are sinister or just chill guys

For some back context: I (20F) moved into this house with my family when I was around 10 or 11. Our house was built in 1894 in a small town in Ohio. The town I live in was one of the last locations of a group of Native Americans (before they were sadly ran out). There is also a lot of talk in my town that our house was used during the Underground Railroad as a “boarding house”. (Our town was founded by a black preacher). Which my family and I aren’t too sure if this is true but it would explain all the tiny doors that lead to hidden rooms. And the gigantic crawl space in our basement. We only have a couple documented deaths on file for our house (none of them including a little girl..she is important). There’s rumors of someone hanging themselves in our big staircase as well.
Okay enough back context. I’m essentially going to list some of the more notable stories from our house let see if anyone on here can help me out with the big question. Are these spirits in someway sinister? Or just chill guys?

  1. The very first night we moved in (I was 10/11) I experienced sleep paralysis. I had never had this before but during my sleep paralysis my “dream” was of a little girl coming out of my closet and every time I blinked she got closer and closer to me until she was right in my face. At that point I was finally able to snap out of it. The weird thing though, is this girl is reoccurring in my everyday life but I could not tell you what she looks like. Just that I know she is a little girl.
And I am not the only one in my family who has seen her. And even they say they can’t describe her but that “they just know.”

  2. My mom was standing on the big staircase looking out of the window. When she felt someone come up and firmly place their hand on her shoulder. Thinking it was my father, she turned around to quickly realize there was no one there. This staircase is directly outside of my room and is allegedly the stair case where someone had hung themselves. I typically avoid this staircase at all cost (even tho it’s directly outside of my room) because I just feel like I’m being stared at from the middle landing on the steps. It genuinely gives me the creeps.

  3. My dad is the biggest paranormal skeptic (even though we are convinced our house before had a mimic) he has had a couple paranormal experiences that he’s usually able to rationalize. But this one sticks out to him. He was sleeping one night and woke up to the feeling he was being watched. He sat up and looked across the room at his closet and saw what appeared to be a girl standing inside. Thinking it was my sister, he kept saying “Maddy, Maddy, what are you doing? Are you okay?” To which he received no response. The little girl then began walking toward my father’s bed and out of the bedroom door. (My dad being the person he is) turned and laid back down facing the door and attempted to go back to sleep.
Still having the feeling of being watched.
He opened his eyes again to find her hands grasping the side of the door and her head peering into the door staring at him. She quickly pulled her head back and he heard footsteps go down the staircase.

  4. I always sleep with my door shut and locked. But that night I woke up to the sound of scuffling around my room. I opened my eyes and saw a figure running quickly around and around in a circle beside my bed. About 10 seconds after seeing this. The figure stoped and slowly walked out of my room. To which I realized my door was wide open. (Though I 100%) know it was shut and locked.

  5. This one actually just happened last night. Since I have dyed red hair i wash my hair over the bathtub with cold water. While doing so, i felt a slap on my back. Not hard, it didn’t hurt. But it was firm. There was no one in the bathroom.

There’s other stories along the way and in between but these are the ones that give me goosebumps everytime I think about them.
I would like to think that maybe it really is a little girl or whoever else is living among us just feels safe to do these things. But apart of me is freaked out by it.
We will see glimpses of the little girl while we are washing our faces, brushing our teeth, or just walking around the house. Items will be found in spots we know we didn’t put them in. We will have lights flicker and tvs turn on and off when no one is around. And our ring cameras we have downstairs constantly go off detecting movement throughout the night.

We have been thinking about having some sort of paranormal investigator come to the house to see if they can pick up on anything. But we also aren’t sure if that would make them angry? I’m essentially seeking advice from anyone who thinks they may have an idea on whether this is sinister or playful. We appreciate any help and advice.

Thank you IA

hello!! i’m looking for a GOOD! haunted house to go to this weekend. the typical 100 acre manors are dumb to me.. i want a haunted house that actually scares me! i feel like i been to them all so i can’t even start to name them, but i am okay with driving around 2 hours. i was thinking maybe Columbus Ohio?? is those worth it? hopefully this post is for this group! and i’m talking about the actor haunted houses! i’m about 15-20 minutes outside of downtown pittsburgh and i did ALL the ones in pittsburgh and it’s not worth it.

thanks!!!
