Web Fiction I hate this "fandom culture is bad" "we should abolish shipping culture" thing
You can enjoy media without being in the fandom, stop getting into spaces for more nerdy people and say they should change it just because u don't like it or don't feel identified with that. That kind of thing was created by queer people.
Yes, it can be toxic and you are allowed to disagree with the fandom in some things, but stop saying it should dissapear just because it's something u don't like.
I keep seeing people saying they are tired of most all ships being gay, then don't interact with the fandom, queer people we're and still are tired of getting straight representation everywhere, but when it comes to us, suddenly something niche that it's not even a problem/canon, starts being "annoying , forced and toxic".

Right? Like I dislike power scalers but no one sees me going on rants about how they're ruining series because even though I think most of them are annoying I can just scroll on when I see them.
15
u/_Chernobly Aug 22 '26
I hate parroting it because is feels like such a fuckin meme in fandom spaces but, "DON'T LIKE. DON'T READ"
7
u/princess_candycane Aug 22 '26
Literally this. As a Gen Z person, I was actually really late to fandom spaces online. There were so many huge fandoms for things I loved—My Little Pony, Avatar: The Last Airbender, etc.—where I had absolutely no idea there was this massive online fandom or shipping discourse surrounding them. I just watched the show and went about my day 😭. I didn't even get Reddit until COVID. That's how removed I was from this stuff for most of my life.
Maybe I'd watch a YouTube video about something I liked, but I had to actively search for it. If I didn't want to see shipping discourse, I didn't see it. If I didn't want to hear somebody's fan theory, I didn't hear it. I wasn't going on Tumblr searching ship tags or digging through fandom spaces. You really can just watch the fucking show.
And obviously shipping communities can become toxic. The whole Klance situation is an extreme example of how insane it can get. But I don't understand why people talk about shipping as though it's uniquely responsible for fandom toxicity. People send creators and actors death threats because they don't like how a story ended, harass people over character opinions, start wars over adaptations, etc. People can become toxic over literally anything in fandom. Shipping isn't some uniquely deranged exception.
At the end of the day, these are fictional characters. If somebody wants to imagine two fake people kissing and you don't care, scrolling is genuinely an option.-26

Except one has an actual tangible effect on you by being loud and disrespectful in a public place and the other is… someone just liking something you don’t. It’s like getting annoyed that horror movie fans exist or that there are people out there who listen to Kpop and occasionally write text about it where someone else can see. It’s bizarre to care. Like at all.

Genuine question, how did people publish fanfiction for Star Trek before the internet? Did they literally just print it out on paper and share it around town or something?
23
u/leviathanrawme Aug 22 '26
Pretty much yeah. The origin of fan zines in fandom spaces was they were physical books people drew/wrote/printed to sell/trade at conventions and meet ups!
It was a lot of networking socially and is why we use a lot of the words we do within fandom creative space me (such as zines) even though the medium has expanded and encompassed more in the modern day

11
u/RadiantEarthGoddess Aug 22 '26
Just consuming but being supportive and uplifting writers and artists is fine. The people who only consume and complain and contribute nothing but drama are the problem. But if you tell that kind to write/draw themselves they always have some excuse as to why they can't.

"I don't like fandom culture" okay go away forever and stop using the infrastructure we built for ourselves. Does that work for both of us? :D
It seems to piss people off that fan communities exist for their favorite things which don't appeal to them. Remarkably, the onus is not actually on us to change ourselves to fit you, person who has not contributed to our social spaces!
3
u/arseniccattails Aug 21 '26
Can I suggest this is downstream of how internet structure has changed, also? People walk into what is a social space like it's a public utility the way an app or a large social site is. Like it just sprung out of the earth, and by rights should be available to them. Nah man, you're the one walking into a club you don't belong to and complaining that they don't do things how you like. Simply start a new club.

Yeah I don't use this place for 'fandom' in the sense of things I actually consider Fandom with a capital 'f'. It's not structured for that. Fandoms I generally think of as having outward presences in many places that enable you to join them and then end up in the actual social spaces. Reddit even at the first hurdle is just not… good for making friends. Even fandom focused subreddits are more 'about' fandom than being themselves fandoms, structurally.

You are clearly in fact well suited to reddit.
36
u/SailorSilverRabbit Aug 21 '26
People are lazy and want others to do the work of fandom for them instead of just making their own online corner.
20
u/arseniccattails Aug 21 '26
"I hate gay fanfiction but I would never ever put in the equivalent work that gay fanfiction people did to make their spaces pleasant and productive! (I just want to steal that work, kick them out, and then be confused when it crumbles around me because I'm surprised this infrastructure isn't magical and needs upkeep!)"
2
u/Flat-Run-7572 Aug 22 '26
Fandom isn’t just about what you can create, it’s about finding a sense of belonging and community. It’s centered around the source material itself in all sorts of ways. It’s supposed to be a place where people can share their passion with others
Also, unfortunately, it’s very difficult for those people to start another community based on their niche and specific preferences, especially if the main one already exists. In this case, it’s rarely just due to a lack of effort
34
u/No-face-today Aug 21 '26
Shipping has always been in fandom and will continue to be in fandom. Shippers make the majority of art or fanfic in fandom, gay or straight, nsfw or sfw. Shit is gonna stay and no 'abloshing' it won't make it go away, people would still want to create romantic art regardless.
If you don't like shipping, that's fine. The block button is free and you can rest easily at night with it. Best shit to ever been invented.
36
u/ThatFatGuyMJL Aug 21 '26
Are you suggesting gay people made the original fanfics in the 70s?
coz Dante wants a word with you
34
u/CaptainTeemo01 Aug 22 '26
Dante literally wrote a self insert fanfiction where he gets to be bestest friends with his favorite poet that he never actually met in life and spend a whole adventure through Hell guided by him, fandoms would be shipping the Hell out of them if the concept existed back then
16
u/SamiTheAnxiousBean Aug 22 '26
he also put all of his enemies in hell
15
u/CaptainTeemo01 Aug 22 '26
Enemies, politicians he didn't like, philosophers and religious figures he hated. Meanwhile most of the poets, philosophers, and politicians he agreed with just happened to either be in Limbo (The honorable part of Hell) or part of Purgatory and Heaven. Not to mention the woman he loved but likely only met a handful of times before she married someone else and died being his spiritual guide through Heaven
Dante would have loved Tumblr and AO3
6
u/LetterZel Aug 22 '26
In reality no, Dante actually put a lot of people he liked in hell. Notably he put his best friend father in hell, and even his mentor Brunetto among the sodomites. Brunetto Latini was most likely homosexual, and despite putting him in hell, when he meets him Dante treats him with great respect.
Dante had more of a really tight system that he followed, the personal experiences came second
3
u/Maximum-Warthog2368 Aug 22 '26
Actually plato is older than Dante and he made fanfics of Achilles and Patroclus.

…is it just me or do a lot of posts in this sub seem like a reaction to a prior post?
That said, I get annoyed at shipping spam and generally leave/ignore a fandom for that. However it does become irritating that people will fixate on the gay ones when there are PLENTY of “they are in WUV” when a man is in the same room as a woman.
6
u/finnjakefionnacake Aug 22 '26
not that this is an example, but i primarily hate complex issues being boiled down to a singular meme/graphic that loses all nuance and tends to be very reductive. i feel like it's all a response to apparent short attention spans and "i ain't reading allat" culture, but every time i see one i'm like "no productive conversation will come of this."
hmmm, maybe i should make a post here about it. using a meme...
2
u/Raven_Lemon Aug 22 '26
I always thought people commenting "I ain't reading all that" just make people looks bad, like it's fine if not isn't interested enough to read something completely but bragging about it just make one looks lazy or unable to read 3 paragraphs

u/justheretodrawcubes Aug 21 '26
I feel most people saying these things are talking about the more toxic fandom culture things and people insisting that you're 'disrespecting' fandom culture somehow. A lot of the latter folks get really mad and chase people out of fandom spaces/post people's usernames publicly + there is a bit of a racism problem in fandom spaces. (which of course, comes from the fact there's a racism/bigotry problem pretty much everywhere)
Fandoms can be good, but a lot of them can also be toxic. My view is we need to criticize the toxic folks and get them to either stop being toxic or get them out of the spaces so people can actually have fun (since fandom is supposed to be fun! but it can't be fun if people are being bigoted)
Sorry for the yapping. I've been in fan spaces for years and have seen toxicity on the rise. I think that's where it's coming from.
3
u/Electronic_Guest4669 Aug 21 '26
Yes, I agree with that
4
u/justheretodrawcubes Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26
Yeah. I think you have a point here too but I also feel fandoms have gotten super toxic/bigoted/etc etc recently which has contributed.
Just clarifying my point further :P
EDIT: ...Did I say something wrong? Why are people downvoting? I see someone made a point where fandoms probably did have a bigotry problem back in the day, but I remember it got better a bit back (not perfect) and then has now nosedived again.
1
u/Organic-Ad5283 Aug 22 '26
i definitely agree with this; as someone who also spends a lot of time in fandom spaces, they have plenty of issues, which sometimes make them not even worth engaging with at all. however, i think there’s a difference between people within fandom criticizing it and people who don’t actively engage in fandom doing so. the latter is i think who op was talking about, because those people tend to treat fandom with disgust, scorn, and mockery, and talk about it as something gross, stupid, or worth being mocked. those people tend to have worse criticisms of fandom, but even when they’re right it still sucks bc it doesn’t feel like their goal is to improve fandom culture, but to invite other people to laugh at it
1
u/justheretodrawcubes Aug 22 '26
I mean yeah I was just yapping about the stuff I've seen in part. I have not seen what OP has seen in recent times, but I don't doubt it
6
u/Hawkmonbestboi Aug 21 '26
Question: is this in response to the post earlier today that was talking about "I hate when everything has to be gay"??
Because the OP of that post revealed their post was made in response to their friend group sexually harassing them. The friend group was rather strongly trying to shove OP into a relationship with another friend that OP was not interested in.
I went into that post thinking exactly like you did... theeeen I saw this comment from the OP and everything made sense. They are a bi person being sexually harassed into a potential relationship and they mistakenly likened it to fandom shipping culture.
15
6
u/inquiringdune Aug 21 '26
That just makes the post even worse in retrospect. Why would they blame gay ships at large for their IRL friend problem lmfao.
1
u/Hawkmonbestboi Aug 22 '26
It's a kid being sexually harassed by multiple people at once, in a targeted effort. I'm not going to fault a baby bi for being confused about what the hell is going on.
3
u/inquiringdune Aug 22 '26
Make mistakes, but at least edit the post with proper context and maybe make it less openly homophobic. That post got like 2k upvotes from people agreeing with the sentiment that gay ships are immoral lmao.
1
u/Hawkmonbestboi Aug 22 '26
That baby bi has absolutely zero control or influence over the 2k upvotes + commentary brigade. Those people are hateful all on their own, and a lot of them are bots.
There was nothing about the post that was homophobic, they did their best with a teenager's language skills to try and convey what specifically was frustrating them. They assumed this was a thing that fandom spaces do, because they are a kid and sometimes kids can't fathom that their own friends are being badly behaved. A lot of people (especially kids) don't even understand that focused and continued peer pressure on a friend to date another friend is sexual harassment.
In fact, they did what they could to specify they weren't coming at this from a homophobic space. Because kids suck at expressing themselves sometimes.
1
u/inquiringdune Aug 22 '26
That's called taking responsibility for your actions, it's a good habit for people to get into. It would also prevent confusion over what point they were actually trying to get across, because as of right now they just sound homophobic. That's my opinion.
But that aside... the title and post content contained pretty blatant dog-whistles for homophobes that they may not be aware they were using, but WERE indeed using nonetheless. Like "why is everything gay now" (it's not) and "there's a huge push for gay characters in media now" (there isn't) and also "depicting romantic love between two characters removes layers of nuance" (this claim is only ever made about gay ships for Some Reason).
So that's my opinion on it. Editing with context and removing the dog-whistles would be the best move.

I appreciate myself to enjoy certain existing mainstream/independent media and being member of certain fan communities in the past and present, regardless of the main issues that's sometimes much naturally inevitable to tolerate with. Just don't be a jerk if someone likes shipping fictional main/secundary characters, give them some respect in certain degree so you can't feel being constantly harrassed by others for what you think otherwise.

Yeah as someone who doesn’t really like shipping or fanfics, I just don’t interact with it. People enjoy it, it does me no harm. If we had to abolish a hobby because a few people who enjoy the hobby are arseholes we would have to get rid of pretty much everything
2
u/Virtual_Sail7441 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26
This is what happens when fandom is crunched down into the algorithm and the only fan-content newer fans receive (or rather fed) is the majority opinion in ships, headcanons, etc. And because they don't know how to create/don't have a desire to create fan-content of their own, or simply just seek out and filter what they do and don't want to see, it becomes everyone else's problem!
Queer shipping, and shipping in general, is certainly not going anywhere anytime soon. If it's something you don't want to interact with, you should know how to filter out this content, or at least understand that it's not being forced upon you in an open fandom space.

Why do some women like reading about two middle-aged men in space kissing?
12
u/Electronic_Guest4669 Aug 21 '26
For the same reason most men like to read a bout guy transporting to a fictional land and get a harem of anime girls
7
2
u/pinecones_and_cacti Aug 22 '26
Fanfic writer and reader here for the 'two middle-aged men in space kissing' fandom! Answers vary from person to person. Sometimes we like the characters and want to see more of them, sometimes we want to explore possibilities that the actual media where they come from didn't go into, sometimes we see some of our own experiences in them and want to write them, sometimes we just find it hot, or cute, or fun. Sometimes they make a good couple and sometimes they don't, and the latter leads to dynamics that we find interesting to read or write about. In my case, I don't usually like original media focused on romance, because it often doesn't manage to make me care about the characters. So, by taking characters I already care about, I have more fun reading or writing romance stories

u/Creepyuncledavie Aug 21 '26 edited Sep 06 '26
Because it doesn’t just stick to the fandom, shippers are infamous for attacking people who have the slightest disagreements with their head cannons and try to make them canon in any way possible, am I the only person to remember the my hero academia fandom during lockdown? They would legit send death threats to the creator if something they remotely disliked happened in the anime. and then there’s dungeon meshi, the author posted a character chart showing the characters relationships to eachother and the shippers got bitchy that the author didn’t make Marcille and Falin lovers. I know it isn’t everyone, but it is a very, very loud minority, and unfortunately, the majority of them are gay shippers so a lot of the heat gets directed to gay fans as well, and acting like it doesn’t happen is not going to help anyone.
5
u/leviathanrawme Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26
The thing is is that this has always been a thing that was present and it’s always been fucking annoying and horrific to deal with when it comes to the toxicity ie the death threats and the like.
The major problem now though is unlike 20-30 years ago or hell, even 10 years ago the internet wasn’t what it is now and the ability to have direct access to a large fan base that shares your interest as well as the creators/people who work on it is literally handed to people on a silver platter.
Decades ago it took a lot of effort to send hate mail as you had to email, or further back actually physical mail your displeasure and anger over something you feel the creator did wrong. But now you can just tag them on Twitter and dox their family with a few clicks of a button.
It sucks.
3
u/Creepyuncledavie Aug 22 '26
you’re right it’s probably one of the main reasons why a lot of creators don’t talk directly to their fandom, but I am also pretty sure it’s more an American thing too, you rarely see any other countries this toxic. correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Toby Fox rarely talk to if at all to the American fandom of Undertale?
2
u/leviathanrawme Aug 22 '26
Its a big problem in different parts of the world but it manifests in different ways from my understanding as someone who has seen icebergs of Chinese based fandom drama float by, however the West is definitely extremely brutal with it is a ways that is only getting worse.
It doesn’t help how easily a lot of western fandom drama by nature of what it is and often centre’s around (queer shipping for instance, or sexuality headcanons) is often co-opted by right wing grifter accounts looking to stir shit for clicks and engagement with no actual stakes in the matter.
Toby Fox sticking primarily to the Japanese fanbase is the widest choice I’ve ever seen as I have seen nothing but awful behaviour for any creator, no matter where they come from when it comes to western fan bases. (Off the top of my head I could list the Gooseworx stuff for a western show with a horrible western fanbase but a good example of how this is effecting creators in the east would by the author of the manga Gachiakuta being driven off of social media entirely specifically due to horrible interacts with her western fanbase)

u/Mediocre-Rush-5652 Aug 22 '26
I'm sorry but the idea of interacting with a community of people who are also interested in that thing is a Queen invention? Maybe I am just confused by what they're saying? Genuine. Overall though the world should learn towards treating Queer couples as the same as other straight couples, if you're not interested in the topic just leave it alone and if you can block the tags or communities. We leave in the age of instant denial, if those are really the reasons it's easy to fix that. Lot's of people are just looking for a reason to be mad or homophobia.
1
u/SilverScribe15 Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26
There's something to be said about, just ignore fics and ships you don't like. Perhaps more reasonable is if it's about the way the fandom acts about everything and anything rather then tags and content on ao3, that's basically unavoidable within the space But I guess if the concept is that fandom was made by queer people, if you don't really want to see the mainly queer readings then...I guess don't be in a fandom.... That feels wrong to me. Maybe it's just odd wording. The conclusion of 'tired of getting straight representation' is also something I'll say, like I've occasionally disliked aggressive shippg Culture too, but it's cuz I'd prefer just not romance in these things I don't want more straight ships, just I think sometimes it could just be friends and it's a tad annoying how it's almost never let to be that by the majority. Also like I've always defined fandom tk be just, spaces for people who like the media, not specifically queer space so...I guess interesting history lesson
1
u/pinecones_and_cacti Aug 22 '26

1
u/Substantial_Cloud956 Aug 23 '26
Yeah shipping culture has toxic people bu they seem to forgwt that every single space does. And the more passionate the hobby is, the more passionate the toxic people will be.
But idk why people who claim to hate something seem to devote so much time to interacting with it. Like anti-shippers. Shipping never hurtt anyone in real life, yet anti-shippers are so eager to hate on others. (I guess bc thats their favorite hobby)
Best thing to do is ship what ya want, look at art and ignore the comments (even tho its hard, trust me, I see some wild comments and I have to just scroll)
1
u/Head_Particular6045 Aug 22 '26
Yeah but times changed, there is lgbtq representation in media, and there can be hetero representation in fandom, like damn liking characters and wanting to "play dolls" with them isnt exclusively a gay thing
Also a lot of times I have seen gay fandom written by cishet girls that use homosexuality like a fetish, not different from lesbian porn made by men
2
u/trinalgalaxy Aug 22 '26
I think the bigger problem is not fandom culture, but when one part of the fandom gets hyper over their stuff being the only thing allowed. Or worse getting pushed to the detriment of all else, especially when its to appease a small group. Unfortunately for the more nomal gays and trans out there, there has been a major push by the crazy gays and trans to have everything conform to them, even and especially when they have no actual interest in the fandom they are harassing, creating backlash against the true fans that arent self obsessed jackasses that happen to have something in common. This is not me bashing gays or trans, this is me pointing to one of the main cultural problem group today, just like too many evangelical Christians were before them.

While I agree with your point in general "normal gays and trans" doesn't sounds really nice
2
u/trinalgalaxy Aug 22 '26
Normal in this case is more drawing the difference between normal people and the crazy self obsessed assholes. I could say normal christians, normal germans, normal x group and no one would have a problem, but certain groups and suddenly its 'thats not very nice'...
Most people are normal everyday people. The loud ones are almost exclusively the crazies.

No for any group of people if you talk about "the normal one" I would assume it's insulting for those not include in it

Fandom and shipping culture IS bad in general and I speak from experience. Echo chambers and social media algorithms invite fan wars and parasocial investments creates entitlement that becomes enmeshed with their identity, as well as toxic shipping cultures, most of which is often dominated by same-sex, non-canon ships. In a vacuum, yes, they are harmless headcanons and most people ignore it, but when it becomes perpetuated by a significant portion of the fandom (which is often) and completely misses the mark of what the source material is (the very thing they are a fan of), then that naturally produces reluctant and disgruntled mindset among fans who prefer to appreciate the source material for what it is.
People have passions and they want to share it with others in their way, just like those who like to ship certain characters
Of course, all of these things have negative effects on mental health, especially if you’re chronically online. And shipping culture has been so bad, it has lead to real life consequences. Fandoms get muted and are avoided/ignored for a reason lol. Very few fandoms are genuinely good nowadays, and if they are, they are usually niche or relatively small.
Also, it’s very ironic to me that this is basically a subreddit for hating how certain things are hating others for hating how certain things are.

Genuine question, why not just write your own story? Why would you take someone else's story and change it instead of just making your own?
11
u/RadiantEarthGoddess Aug 21 '26
Because I like the characters. It's not like the creators of Resident Evil or Dead by Daylight will ever read what I am doing to the characters, so why not? I am making my own story with the characters.
(Not claiming to be a great writer, it's just a fun, creative outlet.)
-7
u/BaseballInside3289 Aug 21 '26
But how is that creatively fulfilling? It's literally just writing dialogue, I get writing dialogue between established characters as a writing exercise but how is it a creative outlet if you're not creating anything new?
10
u/RadiantEarthGoddess Aug 21 '26
It's not just writing dialogue. It's getting an idea for a story and fleshing it out. It's exploring the character's thoughts and feelings in that situation, how they will react, what they will say (and not say). The vast majority of my writing isn't dialogue.
7
u/inquiringdune Aug 21 '26
Just because you're not inventing new IP doesn't mean you're not creating something new.
5
u/No_Training419 Aug 21 '26
it’s not just writing dialogue. the only thing you’re borrowing is the characters, everything else like the plot and setting is all up to you
also the point of fanfiction isn’t to become a master writer or anything, it’s focused on the characters and exploring them and their relationships with each other in a way you don’t get in canon

u/LemmeSeeYourAsshole Aug 22 '26
Yes its DEFINITELY men jamming their way into women's spaces
6
u/Global_Algae_538 Aug 22 '26
Fandoms arent a women's space some are mainly female but everyone is welcome a cis or Trans straight man can write fanfic about Spock kissing aswell
-3
u/Trumpmon Aug 22 '26
Honestly, it should disappear, people like the fandom ruin things often if the Fanbase is listened.
-4
u/fuckthisstupidupdate Aug 21 '26
Its more about hwo a lot of shipping culture is strongly ok with pedo ships
2
u/HiroHayami Aug 21 '26
no lol
There's a reason why the term proshipping exists.
1
u/fuckthisstupidupdate Aug 21 '26
Eh im a shipper and ive seen a strange amount of proshippers tey to blend in with other shippers
0
u/ChampionshipHorror95 Aug 22 '26
Please tell me the normal ass shippers see those freaks and run them off.

u/The_Unknown_Mage Aug 22 '26
People really do seemingly like making the same mistakes as before. There is a reason people make such a hard line stand that all shipping is okay with no caveats or butt's
-9
u/Icy-Finding-8126 i hate fun Aug 21 '26
I keep seeing people saying they are tired of most all ships being gay, then don't interact with the fandom, queer people we're and still are tired of getting straight representation everywhere, but when it comes to us, suddenly something niche that it's not even a problem/canon, starts being "annoying , forced and toxic".
What about queer people who dislike shipping culture ENTIRELY? literally i'm an example of this. Yeah, i'm a huge nerd but i hate it

u/Realistic_Jello2638 Aug 21 '26
>What about queer people who dislike shipping culture ENTIRELY?
What about you.
Like sorry but if you don't like shipping then the onus is on you to avoid shipping conversations. Scroll on by. You can just ignore them and leave shippers to their game of dolls and doing that harms you in no way. If you want a shipping free space to indulge in your fandoms then go make it yourself.
-7
u/Icy-Finding-8126 i hate fun Aug 21 '26
Yeah i'm the ONLY person in the world with this opinion, amiright? /s
14
u/Realistic_Jello2638 Aug 21 '26
You obviously aren't.
So go make your shipping free fan spaces and quit bitching that the shipping inclusive spaces aren't catering to you.
0
u/Raven_Lemon Aug 22 '26
Nobody is saying your opinion about shipping is rare or wrong, it's just that if you personally don't like something, you can just not engage with it and let people who enjoy it have fun
9
u/Hawkmonbestboi Aug 21 '26
Why does someone else's personal likes and dislikes bother you that much?
-2
u/Icy-Finding-8126 i hate fun Aug 21 '26
?? what? i'm talking about the "these characters interacted a bit, they're in love". and i said im a huge nerd, HOW ARE U SURPRISED? i like canon relationships. and i'm not talking about only queer ships. the entire ship spectrum is horrid
12
u/xi-uwu-ix Aug 21 '26
If you don’t like it then just ignore it?
11
u/depressivefaerie Aug 21 '26
That’s too hard apparently.
4
u/xi-uwu-ix Aug 21 '26
There are lots of ships I don’t like so I just… don’t interact or ignore it
3
4
u/Hawkmonbestboi Aug 21 '26
... I ask again: Why does someone else's personal likes and dislikes bother you that much?
10
u/fukingtrsh Aug 21 '26
That sucks, but ultimately your opinion doesn't matter at all.
-10
u/Icy-Finding-8126 i hate fun Aug 21 '26
"ERM ACKSHALLY UR OPINION DSN MATTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" love this argument
10
u/depressivefaerie Aug 21 '26
Your dislike of it doesn’t overwrite other queer people’s enjoyment of it. That’s why it doesn’t matter if you don’t like it.

u/Beautiful-Aerie7576 Aug 21 '26
As a queer person, I get extremely turned off a fandom if it’s constant shipping spam (especially if that ship goes against a character’s explicitly stated sexuality). If there’s other stuff to interact with that’s fine, but if all it is is people’s favourite ships, honestly, meh.
I understand and respect the roots of fanfic and shipping, it’s just not something I care about because of how I feel and understand romance and attraction.
-4
u/CHNGshong Aug 21 '26
The word "shipping" started in the 90s with the X-Files heterosexual male and female leads. But I guess you can rewrite history to be whatever you want it to be.

We don't care about what you specifically think, there is a lot of people in anime and video game spaces that are glad for inclusivity, I'm fine with them and with media I consume no matter what you think
-7
u/Somethingor_rather Aug 21 '26
Bro I'm not straight and I fucking despise shipping culture, ESPECIALLY sexuality- bending. Making a straight character gay is a weird and disrespectful as making a gay character straight. People rely on representation in random fucking TV shows. It's a god damn movie bro who the fuck cares

Sorry, what? I can't hear you, I am too busy making these two male straight-in-canon characters kiss.

what does that have to do with changing someones sexuality? If you don't want double standards don't exercise them.
0
u/No_Training419 Aug 21 '26
i kind of agree with the double standards part, but unfortunately we live in a world where most of the time straight people are headcanoned as queer so queer people feel more represented while a queer person headcanoned as gay is done so out of homophobia.
in my opinion the fine line is it an important aspect that contributes a lot to their character (which most of the time for queer people, it is)? then don’t change it. but if not, headcanon away.another thing is most of the time a character won’t explicitly state their sexuality and it’s up for audience interpretation. even if they like someone of the opposite gender in series doesn’t mean they’re explicitly straight they could also be something else like bi or pan.
also… what’s wrong with wanting representation in media? what you watch is a huge part of modern culture everywhere, its only natural to want to see people you can identify with.

u/Jp3711nc Aug 21 '26
I dont mind gay characters its the writing they seem to always get. They tend to be stereotyped so much. It also goes to lesbian characters if you are there just to be the lesbian character without depth why should I care.
To select character you like to be gay is toxic as well I hate it when people do it especially woth bakagou and deku. Why they will be toxic together.
-2
u/Sam_Stormwolf Aug 22 '26
Or hear me out here i stay in the fandom and continue to bring up my dissenting opinion to make other people with dissenting opinions feel comfortable. Everyone should be welcome and represented, live with it.
5
u/arseniccattails Aug 22 '26
This is like entering the sushi restaurant and then complaining people are eating fish, which you hate, and when people tell you you don't have to eat fish but you are by choice in a sushi restaurant, you plant your feet and decide it's your mission to make the sushi restaurant into a burger joint.
Fandom does not need ~brave dissenting voices~ it's a fun social space for the people who like it, not politics. It's also not a democracy. It exists for the people who partake in it. If the people who agree with you exist in large enough numbers, make your own spaces with them.

I love that we humans are able to be so comfortable in our own lives that we genuinely get upset when people do things that only affect us in the sense that the actions can make us cringe.
