Pretty sure Samsung is the company that actually makes the screen going into the iPhone Duo.

Foldable displays have been a thing for a while. Apple’s specific praise is about the hinge that folds and unfolds the display.

I feel like they always focus on the hinge durability to distract from the screen softness.

Pretty sure Apple gives Samsung specifications for the parts they need, and Samsung manufacturers those parts. There is a difference between designing and manufacturing. Samsung just so happens to be one of the few tech companies left that does both, but for the most part tech component manufacturing has been massively consolidated for years now.
It is incorrect to state that Apple is merely taking off the shelf parts from Samsung and slapping an Apple sticker on them.

Easy, first they grabbed an iPhone and then they squeezed it in half very, very firmly and were surprised when the screen shattered. They then went about researching how to not make it break when folding in half. After years of research they found out they needed to make 2 phones and tether them to each other via a flexible hinge.

Can't say I'm a big fan of the 'vintage' 4:3 aspect ratio (4.24:3, if we are being pedantic) of the inner display, or the aggressive rounded edges of the outer one.
In a world where content is moving even beyond the 'traditional' 16:9 aspect ratio, going back to a design that harks back to CRT television sets of yore is a rather bold move.
Of course, Apple is no stranger to "boldness" and "courage"!
In any case, the design looks asymmetrical at best and jarring at worst, at least for an Apple product, which has traditionally followed symmetry and 'industrial' design... or at least it did back when Jony Ive was still at Apple.

I’m confused because your “problem” is exactly what the 4:3 ratio is solving. They could make a 16:9 or longer screen, but the other would then be a square.
The traditional folds are long, but open into a square that does nothing for video; the flips are squares that open into a longer screen, but are no better than a slab.

it's not 4:3.. it is 1.41:1 like A4 paper so the inner and outer are the same aspect ratio. The 4:3 screen is the Galaxy Z fold 8. As an owner of that device, it's quite good

What?
It's basic mathematics: (1.41 x 3) : (1 x 3) = 4.23 : 3.
Are you arguing over tomayto, tomahto?!

it does make a difference in the hand as the iphone duo is both wider and shorter when folded than the z fold 8 and has smaller black bars on normal non 4:3 content.
The other reason for this is so apps look the same on the outer screen as side by side on the inner.. or when rotated into portrait you get one big app at that same aspect ratio.
