Advice Curious about picking your first or new handgun? Curious about a model or caliber? Stop here first! Resources etc.

Multiple posts concerning selecting a new (first) handgun, or first defensive guns have popped up.

I dig activity on our page, I'm all for thoughtful discussion, I'm all for us exercising our rights.

However, this subreddit has been around long enough now we have a good collection of folks asking mostly the same question and I think we can streamline this process for our existing members, newcomers, and curious browsers alike.

So! That being said, there are some links to outside websites at the bottom of this text that have decent advice on choosing the purpose of use, caliber, size, model you may be looking for when selecting a new or first handgun.

The articles are typically focused on new shooters or at least folks new to handguns. Many will recommend training, hands on time, etc., before your first purchase and if you have the time and funds I definitely agree, but research your trainer/facility thoroughly.

Eventually I will try to curate a well rounded list of the most popular makes and models in various categories. I also intend to make a few polls for the active community to vote on a few things as well.

Holsters & Accessories Holster for Shield X

Post image
2 Upvotes

I just picked up my new Shield X today and I need a holster recommendation. I'm more over an OWB kind of person. I leave my shirts untucked. But especially with cooler weather here I'll have hoodies on anyways. I have the threaded barrel specifically so I could carry it with my SAW Shiv if I wanted to. But I'm having trouble finding any holster that would allow that. I also have a Holosun P.ID light, and I don't see to many options for those style lights either. So any recommendations? I have a belly band, maybe that's my best option.

I asked which one to go and here we are.

12500 NOK with 5 mags, a leather holster, 3 mag holder and a box if ammo.

I think it is a good price especially here.

Transitioning from optic to irons?

I’ve pretty much been exclusively shooting with optics since I’ve gotten into the hobby. I really want to get into shooting irons… revolvers mainly, but I’d like to take the dots off one or two of my guns and use the factory irons.

Every time I do, I’m having a lot of trouble focusing. I end up closing one eye so that I can line the sights up properly.

Anyone have any tips for transitioning between red dot and irons? Just more practice, or am I missing something? I’d like to get to the point where I can bring red dots and iron sights to the range on the same day, and use them both.

Best holster for OWB carry

Its getting to be winter and here in michigan that meams dressing in layers. This can make it hard to conceal everywhere I am going. I want to have an OWB holster with some kind of active retention but i dont want a drop leg holster or anything that looks too tactical.

My edc for this type of weather is a walther pdp compact with 4" barrel. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions outside of a typical duty holster like safariland.

I immediately got a new holster for it. A better than this fake leather holster. Got a hold of FN to see if this had a recall on it. It is one of the ones that don't. Next do some upgrades to it. Gotta get a threaded barrel and a silencer on this thing.

New buyer with XXL hands

Hi. I am totally new to guns. I’ve been to the range a few times. I know everyone says I need to rent different models before buying, but does anyone have recommendations to start with to rent for someone with XXL hands? Thanks!

Looking for a second range handgun. Which would you choose?

I'm looking to pick up a second handgun primarily for range use. My first handgun is a CZ P-10 C Ported, and this time I'm considering something that accepts Glock magazines.

I'm not in the US, so my options are somewhat limited to what's available locally or can be ordered through local dealers.

Here are the options I'm considering:

  • Glock 19 Gen 6
  • Ermox XP Pro (standard or compensated version)
  • Derya DY9 Island
  • BUL Armory Axe C Pro
  • Staccato C4X (although this one costs nearly 5x as much as the others)

The biggest issue is that most of these handguns are special-order items, so I have no way to rent or shoot them before purchasing.

Since I already own a ported CZ P-10 C, I'm wondering whether I should go with another compensated/ported handgun or try something different.

I'm mainly interested in shooting experience, reliability, trigger quality, ergonomics, and overall value.

For those who have experience with any of these, which would you choose and why? Is there one that particularly stands out, or one you'd avoid?

Eternal Slide Bite - M&P 2.0 Competitor Steel HD

With the M&P 2.0 Competitor Steel HD I consistently run into my thumb, specifically the thumb "knuckle" (CMC joint, basal joint, the portion closest to the rest of the hand) rising up a touch and getting split with the reciprocating slide. I run into this issue with some other firearms that do not feature a beavertail. I was under the impression you want to get a high purchase with your dominant hand. Do I need to instead bring it down a smidge? It feels wrong to hold the firearm in this manner. My current theory is this slide bite issue is a result of the unique structure of my hand, if it isn't some fundamental misunderstanding about proper grip.

If it is a result of my unique hand, is there a custom gun smith out there that can make a permanent beavertail on a steel frame?

How’s it for a first handgun?

Post image
93 Upvotes

About three months ago I posted in this subreddit for suggestions about buying the first handgun, well I bought one finally and it’s a Stoeger 8000 FT, very reliable, looks good , feels good in hand as if it were built for my grip. It has less recoil in comparison to other guns of the same category due to rotating barrel mechanism.

I need some pointers on how to maintain a gun i.e cleaning, lubing, storage etc.

Walther PDP F 4” vs. Springfield Echelon Comp

I’m a female shooter trying to decide between the Walther PDP F-Series 4” and the Springfield Echelon Comp, and I’d love to hear from people who have experience with either or both.

I’m really drawn to the Walther PDP F because I love the way it looks, the ergonomics feel great, and I like the lighter recoil spring and easier slide manipulation. My main concern is the recoil. As for the Echelon Comp, I haven’t had a chance to shoot one yet. However, I’ve heard it feels somewhat similar to the Glock 19, which I’ve shot quite a lot and have never had any issues handling.

I’ll mainly be using it for range shooting and possibly home defense. I don’t plan on carrying daily, but I might want to give concealed carry a try someday.

For those who have shot both, which one would you recommend? Is the recoil difference really that noticeable?

I’m leaning toward the Walther because of its looks and ergonomics, but the recoil difference is making me hesitate.

I’d really appreciate any firsthand experiences or opinions. Thanks!

Advice Needed First CCW: What to pick?

Hi all,

I'm hoping I might be able to seek some advice from you all about a first CCW. There seems to be no shortage of options out there, and I can't really seem to narrow it down any further (and all the reviews I find elsewhere don't give too much concreteness either). Any advice/insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Here's what I'm looking at:

  • Springfield Hellcat Pro Comp
  • Springfield Echelon 4.0c
  • Canik MC9 Prime
  • Canik Prime Radian
  • S&W Shield X Comp
  • S&W 2.0 Comp Carry
  • I hear good things about the Sig P365 series, but not as much as the above
