Question Can My Hamster Live in Any of These?

Thumbnail

I know that most experienced hamster owners know that store bought cages aren't the best, but if I get a large one, cover the wire floors with cardboard, and put LOTS of bedding and enrichment in it, will my hamster live a happy life? Also, what can I add in terms of enrichment, substrates and foraging for food? Thank you.

New Hamster How do u tame an extremely skittish hamster?

Just got a dwarf about 3wks ago, and he is the most skittish and timid hamster I’ve had. Tho he’s not aggressive, even when scared he’s never attempted to bite me. He’s just extremely scared that any tiny movement he’s not prepared for sends him scurrying to his hide/burrow.

He seems ok getting food from my hand and going on my hand, but once the food is gone and something spooks him, poof he’s gone like a cartoon.

He also doesnt seem to run on his wheel at all, and doesn’t chew on things. I have so many puzzle toys filled w food that’s untouched.

I’ve had about 5 hamsters at this point and he is the most peculiar one haha. I’ve had an aggressive one that was untamable but at least that one was understandable and predictable

Question Changing wheels

Post image
18 Upvotes

So I’m changing the wheel to my girl soon and am very much overthinking this. She’s had her old one almost all her life and it’s the one I got with her. I personally think it’s bordering on being too small so I got her a new one. It’s still on its way but I’m thinking of how to change it out. Do I just swap them or do I let her have both for a little bit to get used to it? Does it matter if I do either?

I’m very inclined to overthinking(GAD goes brrrr) so how would you go about it?

I doubt it matters but she’s a dwarf hybrid

(Hammy tax paid of course. Her name is Fridolina and she’s my babygirl)

She’s honestly an absolute doll, and we bonded very quickly! I read her breed is very friendly compared to others which I didn’t know before I bought her, just got lucky I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

Question my hamster did not come out last night, what should I do?

My hamster has not come out during his usual time last night/this morning. I saw him just two nights ago and he seemed completely normal and very active. My hamster has a habit of changing his schedule up pretty regularly so i’m not sure if it just one of those times or if something is actually wrong. What should I do in this scenario? Should I look for him or just wait to see if he comes out anytime soon?

Dangerous product Is this ok or dangerous?

I know bendy bridges that have gaps are dangerous and should be filled with moss.

What about these willow tunnels? They also have gaps🥹

But I often see them at hamster owners.

Are these safe?

Do you have any experience with them?

First picture is happy hamstery (absolute no shade. Happy Hamstery is like a respectable reference for me. Second is fressnapf (multifit)

And thank you so much guys you help me keep my little girl happy🥹❤️ (here is her sleeping in her wheel from her playpen)

Question Does my hamster need to go to a vet?

I'm a first time hamster owner and the little guy is only two months old. They've been making a weird sneezy noise for two days. It's only now and then and it only lasts a bit but I'm scared they have a respiratory infection. They used to be really easy to coax out of hiding by just rustling a bit of bedding but for a few days they've started hiding way more. I heard him do the noise under the bedding again but I can't get him to come out to inspect him. It's around 8pm around here so around the time he should start being active.

I am terrified. I don't have a car so taking him to the vet would require going out in the cold with him in his carry-on and it's 10°C outside and half an hour of walking. Or two buses if they're still moving and about an hour in that. If they allow me to take a pet on board.

It's also incredibly expensive especially since there's only one place that takes care of hamsters here. I'm terrified of the bill but even more terrified of something happening to him.

I have a friend who has had over five hamsters and I sent them a message and I'm hoping they'll reply and be able to come over and assess the situation. Especially since they have a car in case I do have to take him. I am genuinely terrified because I researched so much about hamsters after getting him and I tried my best to give him the best life possible and now he might be sick and I don't know what to do.

I know you're not supposed to take pets you can't afford but he was originally my friend's. They had him for a bit over a week before they admitted that they weren't fond of him and I took him in. I've always wanted a pet but I was scared of something like this but then I saw the empty aquarium he was in and how bored he looked so I wanted to give him a better life. I researched everything and I got all the original owners supplies plus the friend who has had hamsters gave me a lot of stuff so he actually has a really nice environment. I even got him a massive playpin and he seemed so happy.

I knew this was a risk but I thought I'd have more time to save up money in case of an emergency. So if something like this would happen I'd be prepared but I've only had him for less than a month so I haven't saved anything yet.

What do I do? How do I know if he genuinely needs to be taken to a vet? What is a normal hamster sound? How do I know if it's even wheezing?

My little bro is a russian dwarf hamster. He seems to be eating and drinking normally. He sleeps most of the day but comes to take a few snack breaks during the day. I haven't seen him in like 8 hours tho when he last took a snack break.

First Time Owner First 48h disturbed

Post image
28 Upvotes

I brought her home yesterday afternoon and since then she’s been undisturbed. About an hour ago the fire alarm in the room went off; I was worried it was real so put her with her bedding into her carry-on, with a jumper over the top to keep it dark, and took her downstairs and across the street to wait it out. As soon as it was finished I brought her back in and she’s been in her cage since. She spent the first few minutes scrambling around in her box and then went to sleep, and I had to wake her up to put her back in her cage. She went back to sleep in her little hut almost immediately.

I couldn’t carry the cage since it’s a metre long and I was by myself. I kept it as quiet as I could and she slept through most of it. The fire alarm is not going to be a regular event and was incredibly unexpected.

I’m really worried about messing up the first 48 hours that are meant to spent alone decompressing. Should I wait for an additional day to let her get back to normal?

Ham picture for tax. Her name is Shirley.

Panpan and Baba are around four to five months old now, and I thought it might be time for them to try some pasta. I found some heart-shaped pasta, and Panpan loved it. Baba, on the other hand, is not a big fan of treats and prefers spray millet instead. 🍝❤️

P.S. They are housed separately, as the AI MOD is concerned. 😅

Question Protein Opposed

Post image
158 Upvotes

Hello there!!

My little Georgie is staunchly opposed to most protein sources I've offered him: he does not enjoy peas, chickpeas, mealworms, or freeze dried crickets. I am rather worried because he's about 25g below where I'd like him to be. For context, he's about 125g, and I'd like to fatten him to around 150g.

Does anyone have any ideas on better protein sources to give him? Can I offer buckwheat pasta or tofu? I have some minnow treats on the way, but my hopes are not high.
