Looking for amp recommendations? Start here!

If you'd like help finding an amp, we need a few details on what exactly you want out of your new amplifier. Bass amp help is welcome too!

Country/Region

It's a great help to know where you are located, some amp brands may be more expensive. Amp brands from one continent tend to be more expensive in another because of shipping, and vice versa. No need to get too specific and dox yourself.

Budget

How much are you looking to spend? Do you wanna buy a used amp, or brand new?

Genre/Style

What are you going to use the amp for? Does it need a clean channel and/or high gain?

Volume & Size Requirement

Let us know if you're trying not to bother neighbours, if you're trying to keep up with a heavy hitting drummer, or if you need the flexbility to do both! Also include if you'd prefer combo vs head & cab, if you can only haul a 1x12 or if you're trying to crank a full stack, etc.

Feel free to include other details like if you need the amp to have built in fx, digital vs solid state vs tube vs hybrid amp, whatever else will help us find you the right amp!

Shin-ei psychedelic machine companion amplifier

Post image
51 Upvotes

Pick up a shin-ei ps14 psychedelic machine today on the local used marketplace and this thing is awesome. Have been playing around with different pedal chains and what amp and effects to pair it with. Was wondering if anyone on here is familiar with these and has experience with some good pedal chains to go with it? It’s making me want to redesign my whole rig around it. The fuzz and modulation on it are top tier on their own but with paired with other pedals the potential for some amazing shoegaze and psych tones is strong.

Has anyone tried one of these with a good tube amp or have recommendations on a tube amp that would pair well with it? I have been using it through a jc120 mainly so far and adding a uafx dream pedal helped to add some warmth but I feel like it would pair well with real tube warmth like a dual reverb or orange amp for doomgaze tones.

My first tube-ish amp. Love it! The cleans are so good and the overdrive on the clean channel is also very good. Wish I got this first before my Orange Super Crush 100.

Heard much about dr.Z.

All my boutique purchases were a disappointment.

This is diffrent.

Great Jazz and folk amp.

If its good for anything else?

Yeah it does doom without a fuzz.

Its dynamic, heavy and loud. Great for fingerpicking.

Awesome attack! And plenty loud.

Itnwill work well on anything except, Metal and country

Just got this from the guitar center as an open box unit. This is a hand wired tube amp based very closely to the Dumble Overdrive Special. Well, it's definitely special. This amp sounds incredible.

DISCUSSION Laney Ironheart Foundry Series, solid state heads

All the marketing hype on these SS amps, I hope the heads are not half empty with red lights in them. That would be unpractical bulk.

I got turned on by the ultra powerful and compact Orange baby amps where the Super Crush 100 was a turn off because of the half empty head.

What is the sense of going SS, when the SS heads are as bulky as the tube heads, just lighter?

Traded my 6505+ combo for this 15w 5150 Icon and cash. It's better all around for my needs (and not starting a feud with the neighbors). Tried other modeling amps, but they were never quite "right". And an ISP Decimator to control the hiss.

HELP Marshall 18 Watt TMB Mods

Thumbnail

Hi there
I’m a proud owner of a handmade Marshall 18 watt tmb combo. I like the sound of the first channel with the Volume and Tone Controls but the second channel sounds a little boring in comparison. I would love to get more gain to get a more rock like sound when needed
Was thinking of removing the mastervolumen since it’s shit anyways as well
I own a vox and have an ef86 channel modded
Was thinking to get something like that going in the Marshall too
I’m open for any Tipps ideas etc

HELP brand new fender frontman 10g extremely quiet even at max volume and buzzing (can’t hear buzzing well on video), sounds even worse with headphones.

my dad bought me this as a gift so i wouldn’t have to use his amp all the time, but it’s like jacked up or something. does anyone here know if i’m just being an idiot and doing something wrong or if its broken, and if so, how i can fix it?

it’s not secondhand and we’ve only had it for like 8 hours, this is my first time turning it on. since you cant really tell in the video just how quiet it is, the sound you’re hearing is just BARELY louder than what my guitar sounds like when not plugged into an amp.

Amps that were underated that became way overrated?

What amps used to be dirt cheap and way underrated, but are now going for top dollar and are overrated?

Here are a few of mine; I love these amps, but used prices have gotten so high they're no longer plucky underdogs, though they still aren't quite the Fender Twin, JCM800, 5150, or Mark IIC+-VII. juggernauts.

Sovtek Mig

Red Bear

Peavey VTM, Ultraplus, XXX, JSX.

HELP Need some advice - Marshall tube combos

I’ve had a Marshall DSL40C for years, but I don’t gig anymore and frankly, even at half power it’s too loud to be practical. I tried switching back to a solid state and it’s just not doing it for me. Anyway, I came across the smaller DSL20 and played it in the store in 10W mode, and it was good enough that I’m thinking about trading down.

But…I was doing some research and came across the Studio JTM combo (ST20C), which can go from 20W down to 5W mode, which is even better for me. I watched a bunch of videos and it sounds way more like my ideal tone than the DSL, but none of the stores in my general area have one I can go play in person. It’s more than 2x the price of the DSL20, and while I can afford it, buying it without getting to play it first feels sort of risky.

Long story short, does anyone have any experience with either of these amps (or even both)?

HELP Looking for unobtainium—super saggy tone

I play mostly nu metal, beatdown/slam, occasional thrashy stuff, and like to play with a LOT of power amp saturation and little preamp gain.
I’m looking for the saggiest amp that can be found for my style of low tuned nonsense.
Voltage-starved-plexi levels of sag, more if findable. I want that transformer SUFFERING. WORK that rectifier. Make Marc Okubo and his ultra-tight-no-transient tones weep. Maximum squish.
Short of going in the guts of my amps with a soldering iron, a big resistor, some capacitors and a 5Y3 tube rectifier, what can i do to achieve things like this?

DISCUSSION Fender Super Champ X2 Ragin' Cajun

I've been in the market for a new amp for a while. I have Boss Katana MKII 50, but I was planning to hand that down to my 13-year-old who just started playing and find something new for me.

I've been going back and forth on whether to go tubes, just getting another Katana, or going the modeller route. I've been hesitant to get a tube amp mostly because I play pretty much only in a small bedroom, and I never really crank my amp that much. Plus, I like that I can mimic, if not replicate, different amp sounds with a modeller or sorta with the Katana.

But, I noticed a lightly used Fender Super Champ II Ragin' Cajun on Marketplace near me for what seems like a reasonable price, slightly less than what I usually see a used Blues Jr III for. From my cursory research it seems it might be better suited for bedroom players, but there doesn't seem to be as much in terms of demos and reviews out there.

As I mentioned, I'm a bedroom hobbyist. I usually play classic and alternative rock. I've just started to get some pedals and I have a couple of drives and a delay.

Any thoughts on these?

HELP Any DSL1H owners?

Hi guys

I've been doing some research lately to purchase a tube amp for bedroom playing only. For reference i have reached 90DBs with my current amp and my upstair neighbours told me that theu didnt hear me.

The more i watch Youtube revises the more i like the tone of this little head.

Im not familiar with this little tube head volume, so i would like to know if this would be ok for my situation.

Also im lookimg for some cab recommendations, i've read some good reviews of the Hesu Wizard 112 (Hesu demon), will It be a good match for the Marshall? And if not, Any other recommendations? I have an overdrive to boost the amp too.

I mostly play metal (from hair metal to modern metal) and i prefer to stay in the 500-600€ budget.

HELP Channel switch for 2 Amps of the same model

So I have a problem with my amps. I have two of the same amp and only one channel foot switcher what I would like to do is be able to switch both amps with the 1 foot switch. I just reached out to someone about buying a splitter and they told me that it was not going to work and would cause a humming with the amp and other issues. I was wondering if anyone out there has a solution for this because I don’t really wanna have to buy another foot switch. If anyone has any insight, I would appreciate it.
