Join Fork in the Path instructors Thea and Christopher in beautiful Nevada City for guided wild mushroom foraging classes offered:

Sat Nov 14 10am-2pm or

Sun Nov 15 10am-2pm

What You'll Learn

This experiential, hands-on half-day program is all about the fascinating world of fungi and begins at 10:00 am. Learning to forage for mushrooms is an ongoing life path. This program will teach you foundational skills to be able to go out foraging on your own. We will cover mushroom anatomy for identification, symbiotic tree and plant relationships, poisonous and edible mushrooms, and forest safety.  This winter, it will be possible to find edibles such as porcini, chanterelle, blewits, oysters, lions mane and more.  The program also includes community building, mindful movement, a cooking demo, and a tasting at the end.

Sliding scale $75-$125 with scholarships available if additional financial assistance is needed.

Farmers markets

Hi everyone!! As a lover of farmers markets, I find myself wondering every week why NC and GV have their farmers markets on the same day. It doesn’t make any sense to me. It makes it harder not only for vendors to get more exposure but also for folks to go to both markets. Am I missing something?

Question about Granite wellness center and would like your thoughts on your experiences.

I have a family member that has been dealing with granite wellness center for almost a decade, with some responsibility of the family member, but the larger responsibility on this organization. I’ve talked to people in the waiting room that seem to have the same issues. It seems completely disorganized and very unprofessional at best. Thoughts?

Grass Valley wood burners: how do you run your stove on cold nights and mild days? (From a Vermonter, mods said OK)

Hi r/grassvalley. I'm a maker in Vermont, and the mods said I could post here asking for feedback.

In Vermont we burn hard all winter. From what I understand, the foothills are different: cold nights, mild days, and a lot of evening fires in fall and spring.

Our house came with two woodstoves, and I'd never run one. I'm a city kid...

I build hardware and software for a living, so I made a sensor that goes on the stovepipe and a small walnut lamp that sits in whatever room I'm in. If the lamp glows amber, it means the fire is burning well. Yellow means it's time to reload. Red means it's running too hot and I should go check the stove.

There's an app for when I'm not home.

Back in January, I posted about it on the r/woodstoving subreddit. I didn't really expect anything except for "hey that's cool," but to my surprise, people started asking if they could buy one. So I hand-made 57 of them and shipped them out to customers all across the country. That is what gave me conviction to see if I could turn them into something real.

The first production units ship in November.

I'd love to learn how people burn up there:

  1. Do you heat with wood all winter, or mostly evenings and shoulder season?

  2. Is it mostly oak you're burning, or a mix?

  3. Have you started yet this fall?

Emergency trailer tire replacement

Hey GV people - I'm at Bullards Bar and need to take my boat trailer in for a new tire before heading home. Does anyone know of a good tire shop that can potentially get me taken care of in short order in/around town?

Thanks!

Edit: thanks everyone - Les Schwab has the tires I needed in stock so all set 👍

Residents can address the council directly during the public comment period at either meeting. Written comments can be emailed to [public@cityofgrassvalley.com](mailto:public@cityofgrassvalley.com) or left by voicemail at (530) 274-4390. Per the city’s published policy, comments received by 5 p.m. the day of a meeting are reviewed and distributed to all five councilmembers before the 6 p.m. meeting starts; comments received after 5 p.m. are supposed to be “addressed during the item and/or at the end of the meeting.”

new in town, where to shop local product

hiii everyone, I'm still new to the area and slowly learning everything here. I haven't found a good place for fresh and seasonal product. I cooked at home a lot, I love to find somewhere that has vegetables, fruit or herbs, fish that are fresh and change with the season. 2 weeks ago we ordered Hibachi At Home and their local vegetables were so fresh. Maybe any farmers markets around here that locals like?

What's something you'd like to have in Grass Valley/Nevada City that we don't currently have?

The past few years have brought some great gems to us. I love that the Owl finally got standing on its own two feet. Bicycle thief has been great. I truly dont understand the bad rap that Brewhaus initially got their beer and burgers are fantastic. Bubba's Bagels is a classic. Sushi in the Raw is some fantastic sushi. The National and Hoolbrooke restaurants while spendy bring nice niches. Love Three Forks, Pizza Joint, and Heartwood too! We've checked off a LOT of boxes lately.

What do you think we need that would really enhance our community that we don't currently have? Could be restaurant, could be venue, something else......

Pretty disappointed

I’ve always found Reddit users to be pretty kind and understanding however that clearly does not apply to this community or subreddit. After posting for an event the amount of anger and hate I received because I shared a poster that was made with AI was astonishing and quite shocking. Not only was I berated by several people but then I received two very alarming chats that were abusive and borderline threatening. Because I shared an advertisement that I personally had not made. Not a single one offered an option for change or wanted to steer me to their favorite artist. No they just wanted to belittle a stranger because they feel strongly about AI.

Let me be perfectly clear…you are despicable and sad humans. You could have scrolled past, blocked me, even chose not to support the event but you didn’t. You were cruel and bitter. I truly hope you don’t come to our events because that is not a mentality that is welcomed but if you DO please feel free to come up and tell me directly so I can put a face to the name and know who to avoid in the future.

The only good outcome is after posting about this on a local Facebook page I was INUNDATED with kind hearted comments and messages and actual offers to create artwork AI free for the bar and events.

I hope your appalling behavior is noticed by everyone and you learn that you can catch more flies with honey. Until then have the day you deserve.
