Hello, r/Grandia. This is being posted by the mod team on behalf of Yoichi Miyaji, the producer of the Grandia series. We've verified who he is, and he'll be answering your questions live himself. Over to him.
Hello, everyone. My name is Yoichi Miyaji. A long time ago, I was the producer of the Grandia series.
I'm here with the kind permission and help of your moderators, so that everything is open and above board. This is an AMA, and this thread is going up early so questions can gather while people in different time zones are awake.
Let me be clear about what this is. Above all, it's a Grandia conversation. I'd love to talk about the games, the people who made them, the music, and the memories you've carried all these years. I'll also share a little of the road that led from Grandia to what I do now, and yes, I'm still making games. But that part is a small piece of a much bigger thank you, not the reason I came.
That thank you is the real point. That a community for Grandia still gathers here, after all this time, moves me more than I can easily put into words.
Because this is about Grandia, I wanted to bring a gift rather than a pitch. With the kind permission of Noriyuki Iwadare, the composer of Grandia's music, here is a concert performance of music from the series: https://youtu.be/fO3lz6NvPbQ
And since I want to be upfront: the game I'm working on now is a JRPG called Under Mythos. If you're curious, it's here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5155220/. Please treat it as background, though. I'd much rather spend our time on Grandia and on your questions.
A recent photo of me is included, as simple proof that it really is me. (Photo courtesy of the game site BEEP21.)
The live window is today, Saturday, September 26, 21:00 to 23:00 JST: • 12:00 to 14:00 UTC • 08:00 to 10:00 EDT (US East Coast, Saturday morning) • 13:00 to 15:00 BST / 14:00 to 16:00 CEST (UK and Europe, Saturday afternoon)
Please leave your questions here any time between now and then. I'll answer live during those hours, and I'll come back the following day, my morning, to catch anyone the time difference left out.
Thank you for having me. I'm genuinely looking forward to this. Yoichi Miyaji

Spoilered for late game plot points
Woo! I spent a lot of time earlier in my game grinding for all my magic levels for Justin and Feena and lol it was the best payoff when Feena is revealed to be an Icarian the very first fight after that she learns all her powerful end game spells. I only have the Tower of Temptation left of the bonus dungeons so I'm looking forward to breezing through it now lol

I’m itching to replay this game for like the 3rd time in my life. I have it on Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. First playthrough was Dreamcast as a kid, then Steam, then I got it for Switch 1 but never got around to it.
Anyway, I read it was buggy at first on Switch 2 but now works? Anyone play through Grandia 2 on Switch 2 and can confirm it plays well?
I just would hate to be a few hours in and hit some unplayable bugs.
I felt that this scene added some depth to the main villain.
It's implied that the prior cutscene was part of his dreaming sequence. It seems that the "bastards" were the Spirits who tried to dissuade his catastrophic ambitions. He initially was conflicted.
Baal obviously wasn't having any of it, as he continues to remain in opposition to the natural laws created by the Spirits. He wanted to transcend humanity via Gaia's magic, and that was that.
I also liked the rocky relationship with his son. Mullen obviously had conflicting emotions with his dad, due to the death of his mother.

Not sure if the spoiler tag is absolutely necessary, just figured id be safe. I recently replayed Grandia 2 after like 20 years or so. I had a good time. Plot is overall fine. I enjoyed my time, and I think it handled the tension of boss battles better than most games in the genre. Im about halfway (?) through 1. I just got Rapp and muscle mommy and am entering the Tower of Doom. I assume the plot isnt going to get worse, but I dont know everything. But wow. Grandia 1's story is LEAGUES above 2. I love the characters. I love the settings. I love how much of a absolute sassy turd Justin can be. I wish it had a hard mode and I hate the magic skill level grind, but its been such a fun ride. I hear that 3 is poorly recieved, but now im feeling sad about 2. But having to follow up anything after 1 would be a challenge. I think every JRPG fan should have to play this game.

Just wanted to tease that I am about 80-90% done with a full decompilation of grandia into native c++ code running on pc. It runs at 60fps with 30fps animations now. Implementation of native rendering has removed all graphical edge glitches present in some emulators. Camera movement, movement, combat movement, initiative bar, and a lot of other features have been interpolated to 60fps. Original sprites are retained, filtering is toggleable. The decomp currently includes a debug menu for warping to different scenes, xp adder, item adder, split audio tuning (ambient, sound, music, dialogue). Video tuning(although a bit more will be added here as I go).
I love this game, and I want my kid to be able to experience this game too without having to emulate it, so I wanted it to feel like it was made for pc, with the ability to easily mod it, create new stories, new dungeons, overworld maps, minimal, custom dialogue and so much more.
I also wanted to keep the original feel of the game as I felt the hd remake didn't really do the game justice in its upscaling. Everything felt blurry and rushed.
I don't know if it's interesting for anyone, but I thought I'd post about it at least. I love this game to death and it's my only answer when people ask me what my favourite game is.
Edit: 2 comments here. This project is made in collaboration with AI, the tools used include both Claude and codex. I say collaboration as it still involves a good deal of human work in terms of structuring, testing, confirmation and utility creating. I fully understand the ones who will not touch it because of AI. Your opinion is valid.
The recomp was made for me and the kids I want to share it with and i never thought there would be this much interest for it. I apologize to those who feel like I've stepped on the toes of, as I didn't intend to ignore the work they have done. I simply didn't know it existed at the time of writing the post.

ORIGINAL POST:
The menu sounds in the PC version of Grandia II (cursor, confirm, cancel) have always been painfully loud compared to music and voices, and there's no option to change them. The SFX slider in the launcher lowers all effects.
So I made GranasSabre, a small fan patch that adds a fourth row to the in-game config menu (Menu → Quit/Config):

It's a WIP, and I need your help. I've only been able to test it on one build of grandia2.exe, and I don't have the Steam version. If you own the game on Steam, it would help a lot if you could:
GranasSabre folder into your game folder (Steam → right-click the game → Manage → Browse local files)GranasSabre.exe and press B (beta test report)If it says your version is supported, press P to install it and let me know whether the new menu row works.
Safety
GranasSabre.py, MIT license). Some antivirus tools flag PyInstaller exes, so you can also run the .py with Python 3.8+.Download: https://github.com/GranasSabre/GranasSabre/releases/tag/v0.1-beta VirusTotal (exe): https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/17f08df32f6e07aa35dee4f8c012bab52afef6acc30cdd08f223ce458f1af746
About antivirus warnings: 5 of 71 scanners on VirusTotal flag the exe (DeepInstinct, Elastic, SecureAge, Skyhigh, Zillya). These are heuristic/machine-learning engines. Microsoft Defender, Kaspersky, ESET, Bitdefender, Avast, Malwarebytes and the other major ones report it as clean. This is a known issue with tools packed by PyInstaller: the exe unpacks a Python interpreter at startup, which some engines treat as suspicious. The complete source code is included, and you can run GranasSabre.py with Python 3.8+ instead of the exe. Your call.
Technical details for the curious: the game computes every sound's volume in one function. GranasSabre hooks it, extends the original Dreamcast-era config menu from 3 to 4 rows, and stores the bar level in unused bits of the config flags in the save data. More in the README.
Feedback welcome, especially if something sounds or looks off!
For transparency: This is vibecoded via AI. If this causes this to be deleted, so be it. Just wanted to share instead of keeping it for myself.

God dammit I am so frustrated. This is literally one of the worst minigames I've ever played.
Trying it on the PC HD Version with my PS5 Controller seems nigh impossible to beat the 5 times you need for all reward.
Just felt the need to vent.

I played the original PlayStation 2 version of Grandia. I haven’t touched it since. I don’t remember ever having Tio is the game. The Wiki says Roan leaves the party, which he did for like a scene, and then he was back. Has it just been updated to a different version or am I completely mandala effecting here?

After the time-skip, everyone in the party got jobs and Ryudo spent the entire year finding the perfect place to dig a hole and bury a sword in the ground? Do better, I believed in you!

Hi all, I've made a mod that allows you to:
The mod gives you smoother gameplay and removes the need to delete assets in order to see the original textures. I've also re-enabled an (slightly ugly) experimental mode that was in de game's code. It allows you to play Grandia in the Playstation's original resolution and aspect ratio.
Besides the interpolation-mode it is also possible to use a "double-speed" 60 fps mode, that makes the game run twice as fast. This is handy if you don't like grinding. Lastly, I've added an optional CRT-filter to give the graphics a retro-feel.
Both the FPS, the display-modes and the CRT-shader can be switched and cycled with hotkeys during the game.
The mod can be found on Nexus Mods.
Enjoy!
---
Update: Version 1.3 is avaiable that fixes a bug when party members leave the group and adds a check for interpolated frames that don't fit in the drawing buffer.

Hello everyone. No one in my party has a full storage and yet since getting onto disc 2 of the game they're only storing items and not equipment drops. Help?
r/grandia • u/Present_Minimum_4831 • 18d ago
Hey guys, I have guido in my Party (for now) and was wondering if there are some enemies I should look out for to use Mogaypick. Like are there some equipment or item drops I should go for while he is in my Party? Also is there any limit to the number of steals or any other info on the steal mechanic I should know?
Thanks in advance.

I finally got Feena making party three people now and about to do Ghost Ship. Yet monsters still seem to drop only insignificant exp points, like below 10 exp. At this rate, grinding levels would take forever. How does grinding work in this game? Will later enemies drop more exp? Also, how should I utalize Sue? I've read she is not a permanent party member and will eventually leave yet I still am fond enough of her that I don't want to just neglect her stats. Is there any way to make her time as member imortant while not wasting items like spells or stat boosters that will not benefit after she leaves?

Spoilers~
Took about two months to beat this.
Sue is my favorite character by far! Then Feena, then Justin. The others I like but not favorites.
After I got the accessory that halved your SP used, I heard
Gadwin's secret move — Dragon King Slice!
like 500+ times.
I didn't' do the last optional dungeon, cause by the 20hr mark I was getting burnt out.
The beginning was so charming. Like I was watching/playing a Ghibili movie alongside a Disney movie.
Then, after Gadwin, it slowed down for me a lot.
Lots of dungeons, lots of enemies. This isn't my first RPG, but it seemed like it was a lot of enemies.
I didn't get Feena's other two secret moves, but I did get the Fire one that did 999 Damage.
Last boss was a joke, the wizard in the cemetery was harder.
I bought a lot of JRPGs on sale on Steam during the summer sale, and I was sitting at my computer bored and literally accidently clicked Grandia, and I'm glad I did. Who knows when I would've played this. It was magical.
The very end, in the after credits when Sue is grown up and Justin and Feena have five kids! I loved that so much.
Combat system was amazing. It was fun when I was able to counter them, but not fun when the countered me lol
The dialogue and voice acting was so amazing. I love hearing old school voice actors, it seems more genuine. Everyone had something to say. I spent a lot of time in each town just talking to people.
The autobattle was also nice. Towards the end, I just auto battled the monsters I ran into cause there was so many and it was just easier than wasting MP/SP.
The final-final boss, I literally autobattled him to death. He didn't do anything to me. I think that's kind of the point though. It was cool just watching them wail on him to death. I did get snoozed like 5 times in a row at one point, but they just woke up and beat it to death.
All the cut scenes were amazing. Leen coming back to Mullen was great.
Sue leaving, guys that hurt so much.
I don't know what else to say. I loved the game, and an 8/10 for me is great. This game def had more personality than other rpgs
Edit: Forgot to mention, the three officer girls that were under Mullen, i loved them so much! I wish you interacted with them more. Fought them more, talked to em, anything! They were so funny!

I never played a Grandia game in my life, so im loving the game a lot with almost 30 hours at this point. I really like the characters thus far.
Just got to this part, I wasn't expecting Sue to leave like this at all, i was half expecting her to get better and get some huge character development and be on their way and happy ending, but i actually wasn't expecting her to just go back though after how much time you spend with her and leveling up her when she has all access to magic, plus shes a very good party member all around and she was debatably my strongest out of the trio (i noticed she lagged behind in levels.... i guess the writing was on the wall on a tehcnical gameplay level looking back.... but i kinda just made up for it in training her magic and all of perma stat boost i had i just gave it to her to compensate) and having to see her go is like... damn game. You took my strongest soldier away after how much sweat and tears i put into training her. Plus i liked her character and dialogue a lot. She was so funny and witty. I liked her since day 1 too and her dynamic with Justin and Feena was really fun to. I thjnk its a cool idea and i kinda respect the ballsy story move to send Sue back. I get why they did it since she's very young and this is more really Justin's story, but still idk, but i don't dislike the story decision. The story is good so far so i will trust this was the right decision. Cant wait for the next part of the game!

Hello. A recent software update unfortunately destroyed a lot of my save data for Grandia Redux, which I was using to test out and research the mod.
I need a PSX-compatible (mednafen or beetle psx) save file or savestate for Grandia Redux disc 1 or disc 2.
Is anyone able to help me out?
Thank you!
