Discussion Goodreads has dark mode now.. but it’s kinda ugly?

I’ve been silently begging for dark mode for forever now, and now that iOS has it… it looks kinda funky? Maybe I need to get used to it but it looks more green to me than the classic dark. Anyone else?

Discussion How are you handling the new 0.25-star ratings?

Apparently, the rating scale now goes from 0.25 to 5.00, meaning it's been extended downwards and 1 star is no longer the lowest possible rating. I'm wondering whether this change to the rating scale will affect the automated recommendations. Are you going back and adjusting all your old ratings to fit the new scale, using the new scale from now on, or just sticking with the old 1-5 star system?

GR Group Question What is the difference between following someone and adding them as a friend?

I realized I’m following some users but it still shows the + Friend button. Do you friend everyone you’re following?

Suggestion Is there a way to filter AI out of recommendations?

I generally love the recommendations on Goodreads, but I don't have time for any AI nonsense. Anyone know of a way to filter out the books with AI? I'll even take a way to filter by year published, if that's possible. Thank you.

Tech Help Still no stars on profile?

I use the iOS mobile app, and am updated with the latest version, (I have half stars, etc.). However, I’m still experiencing a glitch where star ratings don’t appear under Recently Read? It looks like this was “fixed” in a recent update, so I’m wondering if it’s just me. Could this be a permanent update? If so, I hate it lol.

“4.36.1
3w ago
This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including a crash fix upon navigation to the book page and fixes for two issues with update progress and ratings from the Profile page.”

Tech Help Anyone notice it’s super easy to accidentally rate books when scrolling now?

On mobile, since the new update they made it too easy to accidentally hit the stars underneath a book title and rate a book as you are scrolling.

Anyone else? It’s driving me nuts

Discussion No ability to tag a book for a shelf anymore

I was just writing a review but found there is no longer a way to tag a review to a shelf any more (or at least this was the case when I had given a rating, written review and added dates and submitted and went back to edit since I was thinking I hadn't added tags like normal). It's not a biggie, but does change the ability for me to categorise what I read. I assume this is the same user experience for others too. Does anybody know if removing this ability is intentional?

I love being able to do ratings in .25 increments now though.

Discussion Is there a darkmode?

Just wondering if goodreads has a way to make the webpage not so bright and white. I just prefer to read on dark web pages. Wondering it there's a setting or option to make it dark?

Suggestion How long did it take people to add books to goodreads?

I have 216 books added so far(I did it weeks ago and havent touched it since because its so time consuming🤣🤦🏽‍♀️)I have hundreds more to add and it only lets me add no more than 100 a day, its so time consuming, I wish I started using goodreads years ago so I didn't have to add my entire collection over the course of a month. I want to use it regularly but refuse until i've added all my older books I have on my shelves.

Did anyone else have to do it this way? How long did adding your books take? 🤣😫x

EDIT: Thank you for the tips about adding the year and then selecting to view the year they were read instead of date added! Never knew that was possible thanks guys xx

Tech Help Reading Stats missing from books read "in Kindle Library"

Silly question: can I fix this somehow?

I read on a Kindle PW and every time I start a new book it automatically toggles "currently reading". When I finish the book it updates to "Book complete"

This year some of the books I've read ended up being duplicated in the reading challenge and I believe I might have cancelled the ones "on Goodreads Shelf" keeping the ones "in Kindle Library". My mistake I guess?

Now, I have the amount of books read in the reading challenge correct (22), but in the reading stats there are fewer items (17).

Anyone has had this experience and was able to fix it?

I think the reading stats are cool, but now I've messed them up a little.

Discussion What are the requirements to be accepted as a librarian?

I have applied twice to become a Goodreads Librarian, and I believe my reasons are perfectly valid. I speak Ukrainian (my native language), French, and English. In addition, I have a degree in English literature.

My main motivation was to contribute to the Ukrainian literature catalogue, as I have already noticed that many books are missing.

Rejected twice in a row. Aren't these reasons valid anymore?

GR Group Question Users With Impressively High Number of Reads?

I was scrolling through goodreads and there I found it: someone who has read over 19 thousand books. I don't know why, but I'm deeply impressed. Their account seemed....young, like as in, a younger person owned it. As someone who is capable of reading 2-3 books in a day (but often chooses not to), that feels on the edge of...almost impossible. I'm not definitely not here to snark on it, I'm just. WOW. Anyone else stumbled across a user with such an insanely high amount of read books?

Tech Help Changing reviews discrepancy mobile and desktop

Hello,

I noticed on the desktop version that we are now able to rate books in 0.25 increments, thank you GoodReads!!! I started last year or so with this app, so changing my bookratings wouldn't take too long, I only don't want all these changes to end up on my feed (I don't want to spam my friends with all those updates).

Now I know there are two ways you can change a book without it updating on your feed:

  1. Un-check the box that says 'add update to my feed' when changing a review on desktop.

  2. Go to > account settings > feed > and uncheck the boxes and save the changes.

I'm only doubting if these work, I tried both with changing one review rating, but this review seems to pop up on my feed on mobile. Weirdly I don't see them on my desktop feed. Does anybody know why this is and if my updates are actually showing up on my feed or not? Let me know, I'm very curious!

Tech Help books randomly displaying as read, sometimes with ratings

Saw another post on here with similar issue, but it seemed the circumstances were slightly different, hope this post is ok...

I have found 3 titles on my read list that I definitely didn't read. Sometimes they reappear multiple times after deleting/removing from my read list. It's been happening maybe 3-4 months.

2 of the titles have been book 2 in a series where I have read the 1st. The other is a totally random book in a genre I don't read at all. They don't show as my most recently read book, with one dating back months in the chronological order. Sometimes 'I'm' leaving 3 star reviews too, no text. I delete them, and they come back a few weeks later.

Curious if anyone else has had this issue, or whether I should take it to customer service? Wondering if this is a new glitch?

FYI: Definitely not family/anyone else as it's not a shared account or accessible to anyone else. Not a kindle syncing issue either. I never use Goodreads while I'm sleepy etc, so I know I didn't 'accidentally' add them while sleepy.

Tech Help Order of “recently read” books on my profile affected by editing reviews

Yesterday I spent a while going through and updating past reviews to reflect the new 1/4 and 1/2 star rankings. I used to write the star fractions in the review “3.5 stars”, so I edited the written reviews to take them out once the stars were updated. I did this on my web browser so that I could un-click the box that would cause the edited review to show up again on my friend’s feed.

Sorry in advance if this part is hard to understand, I wish I could post pictures.

Now, when I look at my profile on the mobile app, it shows these older books with reviews I recently updated on my profile under “recently read” even though they’re old and only recently updated. If I go to “my books”, the read books are still shown in the correct reverse chronological order. (And there is an easy way to change the order shown)

Is there a way to edit the order of books displayed on my profile in the “recently read” section to show those actually read most recently and not just updated most recently?

Discussion Tips for success as an author on Goodreads?

Wondering if anyone here is an author that has been successful on Goodreads?

I have done a book giveaway and have over 900 "to read" on that book, but obviously people add a lot to their lists.

Any tips? Or as an avid reader, what decides what you read first as you're going through your list? Thanks!
