Edit to add: Please ready the post. Our girl is great- we are fine and have no desire or intention to rehome her. Behaviorists in our area are suggesting board over standard in home. Just getting a feel. We ARE open to in home training.
My heart and head are so conflicted. We are obsessed with our pup and she’s beyond smart. We are giving her a ton of exercise (miles and miles and miles), brain stimulation, and love. She’s learning so much and I’m seeing improvements. She’s good on a leash, minimal pulling that’l she can correct. When she’s not crazy excited, she can come, place/set, leave it, look at me and all of the basics (sit, shake, etc). However, settling is not her jam when there is any form of distraction. One minute she can do things flawlessly and the next she’s knocking us over with just moving about the house. It’s really a matter of settling down. She doesn’t have the hang of it. I know I need some help- I’ve done all the videos and things and they’ve been awesome, but this last puzzle piece is making it hard. She’s my daughters best friend , but play often ends in sending my kid on the floor with a fluffy hip check (I’m using hyperbole- my child is NEVER alone with her or actually flying across the room 😂) . We love her cuddles, but she flies (the dog actually does) at us while seated and instead of petting her she’s on 10 and love- attacking us. I know— it’s not a huge problem- there’s not an ill spirited bone in her body, but it’s making things frustrating. Is this a “wait it out” or a board and train? She’s 17 months and a rehome/rescue and I’m terrified she’ll think we left her. Any advice on training tips or in general to help ?

I just got my golden retriever few days back. Put him on Royal Canine Maxi Starter. According to the chart, he is supposed to eat 157g per day. He is only eating half of the recommended amount.

What does everyone do with their golden’s on slow days? It’s a slow, wet rainy day and I feel bad because I have no idea what to do with her but you can tell she is bored. I gave her a frozen Kong and that was gone in maybe 7-10mins because she is SUCH an aggressive chewer. We play fetch for a little in the rain but I’m 37 weeks pregnant and I don’t want her getting sick so that’s short lived. What do you do with your dog on slow days?

My 3 yo golden retriever has been having diarrhoea with bright red blood since last morning. He’s pooped like 4-5 times yesterday and each time there’s been bright red blood. He had also vomited yesterday morning and didn’t eat anything until last night. He’s not showing any interest towards food either. We took him to the vet yesterday and they gave him iv fluids. They also prescribed pre/pro biotic sachets to help with the loose stools and pantop to help with acidity for 5 days.
For dinner I gave him farmina vet life gastrointestinal wet food. He usually loves this and even yesterday it got him up to eat but he didn’t eat all of what I offered (around 150g). I’ve made boiled chicken breast and rice-again a dish he usually enjoys even if his stomach is upset. He had a few pieces of the chicken but when I offered the rice and chicken as a small meal he just didn’t get up to eat and wanted to lie down. He’s had fluids and I understood that he maybe wanted to rest more after everything he’s been through, but I’m really concerned about how I’m going to get him to eat over the next few days. He pooped again twice this morning- thankfully the blood has almost disappeared and the poop was loose but not like water. He’s still not showing interest in food. I had to basically kind of force him to eat. I really hope it gets better but I’m just so worried because this is the first time it’s happening and I’m not sure what to expect.

Last time on the boat for the summer, water too cold for us to get in, but our golden jumped off and had his mini adventure on the beach by himself!

My friends call her overweight when our vet says shes just really big. My best friends family dog is the same type of breed and she’s also massive, and I have another friend with ANOTHER dog of the same type of golden who’s about the same size. Does anyone know why english creams get so big? Or is it just coincidence?

My girl Nash whom is nearly 1 years old lost her best friend Rusty a 3 year old Cavoodle. It was sudden and unexpected. It’s been about a week and she is so sad. Isn’t eating properly, not her usual energetic self and is still looking around the house for him occasionally whimpering. She didn’t even want her favourite treat. She’s been very out of sorts when we’ve gone to the shops or left her alone for a short period (which I get having had a friend her entire life).
Does anyone have advice? It’s been tough to lose a dog and then see the other so heart broken!
The household is heavy so whether she’s picked up on that energy. Either way it truly seems like she’s taking it the worst.
Thanks in advance

Our sweet boy Bear got diagnosed 2 weeks ago with lymphoma and they told us to expect 3-6 weeks left with him. I’m not handling it well at all, he’s only 5 and this is my first dog I’m losing as an adult, not the family dog who I loved but my baby. How do you process? We did everything right- every genetic test done, every vet approved food, healthy weight, vaccines, exercise, etc. Picture just so everyone else can see my baby

Hey everyone! I have an amazing red golden retriever who is turning 10 in two days. He is still extremely active and you would not know he was 10 you would think he was 2. I am very heavily considering getting a another Golden. How was the training on the second one and having two in general? It’s just me and I am used to having more than one animal at a time. Right now I just have the one.

Recommend reading? On a rewind, what would you do differently?
I think I'm prepared, and I'm reading and watching training videos. Got the crate, the bowls, the vet, the toys...everything lined up.
I've had a mastiff x, a wolfhound, and an alsatian shepard. All good dogs. Never had a puppy...like first night away from his mom and litter at 8 weeks.
Eek!

We’ve had our Golden boy Ranger since he was 9 weeks old, and I’m curious what everyone else’s experience was like at 16 weeks.
He’s a great pup and picking up obedience quickly. SIT, STAY, DOWN, and COME are pretty solid in low-distraction environments. Loose-leash walking is hit or miss. We give him a few short walks, retrieving games, training, and plenty of naps. He’s even pretty well behaved at breweries and settles with occasional treats.
The challenge is at home. We have a 7-year-old Lab who just wants to relax, but Ranger wants to play CONSTANTLY. He bites her ankles, hangs off her neck, and barks when she won’t engage. They play great outside, but inside he really struggles to leave her alone.
He settles well in his crate or with a chew, but when he’s loose in the house, he’s usually pestering her or looking for something to chew on. He occasionally comes and chills beside us, but those moments are pretty rare.
I got my Lab when she was 6 months old, so maybe my expectations are just too high for a 16-week-old puppy.
Is this pretty typical Golden puppy behavior? When did yours start being able to just hang out and relax without constant supervision or entertainment? Especially curious about experiences introducing a puppy to an older dog!

Ugh! Well, it got us. Resource guarding. He doesn't do it with us. We had him around other puppies in "puppy pre-k" since he was 9 weeks old, and they didn't introduce toys enough. When he did resource guard with other puppies, we were told to take the toy for a minute, and then put the toy back in play. But here he is 4.5 months old, Resource Guarding at the dog park. He doesn't do it with older/ larger dogs. But he does it with dogs that are the same size or age. There is an American Black lab that is the same age that he is, and he is being a straight up A-hole to. And now that dog doesn't want to play with him. I asked to borrow a friend's E-collar and we are planning on trying the dog park 1 more time with the E-collar, as a last resort unless we can get some other great tips here. I have never had this issue with any dog I have had. Please help!

I’ve seen so many videos in passing (before owning a golden) about things you shouldn’t do with a golden puppy that you don’t always get told (like not letting them jump off things and not letting them run too much when they’re under a year old) I know the breed has a decent amount of health issues and we are trying to do our best at giving him a long healthy life.
What should we be doing and not doing with him to avoid joint/health issues?
He is a very spirited chap and loves throwing himself off the couch which is already making me go grey at 32 lol.
