Discussion Why does she do this?
There are some days where she just refuses to walk and either dead-weights on her side or just sits and won’t budge. The only way to get her to move is say “let’s go home”. What dog doesn’t enjoy a walk!?

GSPs are built for running 20 hours a day and power walking for 4. They are built different.

They don't want to walk anymore. Or at least not in the direction you're going.
Notice how in all the pictures she's in the shade?

It’s like a single house down and already changed directions two times.

Ugh, God, mine does this in the summer. Refuses to accept shorter walks in the heat, but then drops and refuses to walk home because she's tired and hot. I literally have to carry her multiple blocks home.
Both her and the one before her do and would also deadweight it in the middle of the road 🤦♀️😅

Sometimes they can also get bored of walking in the same neighborhood 3 times a day, does she go to the park or forrest sometimes?
I also ask my dog where she wants to go, and then she'll go her prefferred way, with this a little guidance from me of course, but letting your dog decide sometimes helps a little bit.
Furthermore, sometimes I grab her favorite ball so she can carry it while walking. I guess it makes it a little more enjoyable for her.
72
u/i-like-carbs- 1d ago
Yeah, I actually started taking her to random different subdivisions on my lunch break and she is way more willing to just walk. I think that is what it is.
36
u/Scary-Camel8655 1d ago
Ours is the same. We have to go "carsies" instead of "walkies" to take her to different walk starting points. She's usually fine then. Sometimes depends on who she's walking with too, if our daughter or sons girlfriend go on the walks she'll trot along happily wherever they want to go.. she has her favorites 😂🤦

Yeah even if a place looks the same to us it smells very different and that's what they care about. Dogs like lots of different smells.

Let them take their time in sniffing too. That’s a huge part of mental stimulation for them.

The trick is go in the direction she wants. My Golden does this all the time too. She either loves the spot, or wants to go a diferrent direction. Sometimes I sit down with her, sometimes I go the direction she wants and lead her back my direction.
Or if my time is really limited, I can trick her to into continuing to walk in the direction I want her to by bringing her favorite squeak toy with me so it distracts her from her realizing she wants to go a different direction.

Because she knows you won't yank her. I'd take it as being comfortable enough to lay down and not be dragged. My malinois does the same to me, she's also like 13 tho. I understand the frustration of having to pick my baby girl up and walk a little. 😂😂

Or at least that was the opinion of my golden.

u/Anadelyn 1d ago
I've only had one but she never did. Walks were exciting and she never wanted to go home when the walk was over. She did tug on her leash wanting to go faster than I walked. My poor girl got the wrong human. I think she wanted to belong to someone on a bicycle, or at least a runner.

I've found that acting like youre the human and they arent doesnt work as well as getting down on your knees and having a serious conversation with them.
Acknowledge their feelings and then say this is what we have to do.
Once they feel heard theyll pop back up

u/Tricky-Sun-98 1d ago
Oh yeah great trick true they are toddlers
20
u/Pale_Presence4662 1d ago
Yes ultimately they are big toddlers (who can pull ducks out of ponds and do 30 mile hikes and clear your yard of animals and alert you if a car pulls in).
They must be reasoned with.

My 8 year old brother once took our golden out for a walk without telling anyone. Someone finally noticed they were missing, and we found them about 2 blocks from our house.
My dog was in exactly the position yours is in, and my brother was in tears, thinking he was either never going to be able to come back home, or would have to abandon our dog forever.
Our dog was in dead weight mode and required me carrying his hind legs and my dad carrying his front legs to get him home. It was his favorite activity after about age 4. Sometimes he would respond to a cheese lure, but even that stopped working after a while.

- Tired of walking
- Doesn't want to go in that direction
- Doesn't want to be done walking (if headed for home/the car)
- Having a feeling, requires babying
- Doesn't want to leave the person/place/dog they were just enjoying
- Too Hot
- Too Dry and Clean (must be remedied)
- Followed too many directions, adhered to too many rules, requires a reboot

Lol. Especially the last one.
I learned with my golden i had to use AllTrails and Google maps to find every park and find places we could sneak off to so he could get his time in.
Sometimes hes down for walk 1,001 around the neighborhood but if thats all hes been getting hes like pfffft this again? Protest.
Maintenance walks are in the neighborhood but his two big walks of the day are like a 6-10 minute drive away and he gets to go wild. Plenty of water and mud and stink for him to get after.

Hahaha it’s a Goldie thing, they all do it. At some point they tried it once and they got lots of attention from the human, so they do it again. Mine does it when we’re going back to the car because she doesn’t want the fun to end
6
u/RXlife13 1d ago
Ours does it any time we go to the car. Sits down and refuses to move. She used to do it as we got closer to the vehicle, now she’ll be at the top of the driveway. So we pick her 65 lb self up and carry her to the car.

u/MathematicianFit2153 1d ago
If it’s a recent thing or out of character maybe check temperature or look for signs of pain while walking.
But yeah it’s pretty common, sometimes they don’t feel like it. Mine knows that pulling doesn’t get him anywhere so he sits and looks in the direction he wants to go and refuses to move.
4
u/EmbryoCrostini 1d ago
THIS. I don't know how there's only one comment discussing the fact that this dog could be in pain, and everyone is calling it cute. This could be a variety of issues that are related to discomfort to downright pain!
2
u/Affectionate_Score78 19h ago
My childhood golden started doing this around ~ 7 years old but loved walking her whole life. So we went to the vet for check ups, blood work, etc. & everything seemed okay. She passed away sadly about a year later and only then we learned she had an enlarged heart. 🥺

u/iDextor 1d ago
My golden sits still and won’t even move. Similar to this dog laying on her side. Mine does this because she hates the leash. She goes completely crazy with energy when I take the leash off.

Goldens can be extremely stubborn like this and go full on deadweight once they decide the walk is done. Try to get in tune with your dog's mood to identify when she might do this. For example, I found that when my dog was younger, he was more likely to do this if he got massively overstimulated on a walk or if he overexerted himself. Taking a few shorter walks may help.
30
u/i-like-carbs- 1d ago
This is two houses down. I just call it a day when she does this and turn back inside. Then she gets crazy in the house because she didn’t get a walk.

u/the_purple_lamb 1d ago
I'm sorry. I completely understand how frustrating this can be. FWIW, my golden has never been a big walker. He's older now and he's perfectly happy with just doing a sniffy walk around the block.
9
u/genechem 1d ago
Standard golden feature lol. Needless to say mine does it too.
Speculated reasons 1. Wants to go another direction 2. Too hot 3. Wants to go home 4. Wants to stay to play/smell 5. Unlikely but paws hurt (other signs obviously)
9
u/PenaltyStreet1286 1d ago
I’d add to this: owner did not pay proper amount of belly rubs prior to departure and therefore payment is needed to be collected asap.
But really, sometimes they just stop to be loved on or are lazy and want to be loved on while just lying down somewhere random.
8
u/NSE_TNF89 1d ago
Goldens are so stubborn. My dude hates being on the leash. He loves going for a walk if he doesn't have to be on the leash, but I don't trust other dogs, so that rarely happens. He literally runs from me when he sees the leash.

7
u/Stupid_Snowmeiser 1d ago
She’s clearly had a long, hard day of walking, eating, napping, thinking about food, patrolling the yard from the window, moving from one comfortable place to another, and looking beautiful. A dog’s life is extremely difficult and we humans will never understand.
7
u/PierogiNotPierogies 16h ago edited 12h ago
Direction request denied. You are not going the way they want to go. Choose another route option.
She might genuinely be done with the walk, or there’s more going on. Could be pain (arthritis, joint, hip pain) or anxiety (too busy/too overwhelmed) related.
My dog is anxious and refuses to go outside because of fear. We go out very early or very late or drive out of town for decompression walks. Last year she started to refuse to walk, and it was due to arthritic changes (supplements and shots at the vet for the condition helped) + shorter/slower walk. Would highly recommend checking w/ a vet re pain.
2
u/Sad_Extreme3241 12h ago
Great answer! I totally identify with it. My Golden will never turn down a walk but does this when he sees something he wants to go to and I'm going another way, or I've changed our normal route. He'll do it in the garden if I want him to come in when he's barking. Yep, it's him wanting his own way. Prince Doggo.
3
u/PierogiNotPierogies 12h ago
Thank you. I think it is wonderful when they feel confident to communicate their preferences, count on being given some locus of control over parts of their life, especially when it comes to walk preferences. Makes me super happy when I ask my dogs which way and they look in the direction they want to go. I do occasionally get it wrong and there’s a dramatic halt.

What does the reverse image search by the mod mean? It's fake? I'm confused, because they didn't take the post down. Did they somehow verify that the pics belong to OP?...
Regardless, I have to comment on the facial expression in pic 1. Classic "Golden one brain cell face". LOL. So derpy but so cute!
15
u/vixenstarlet1949 1d ago
I think it just to make sure the photos do belong to OP and it is not a repost (which is a chronic issue in animal subs)
6
6
u/Yumaumai 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's a systematic automatic comment, by an official robot of some subreddits, to give direct links to search for the post pictures, on various image search websites, to help mods and other users, check if these pictures have already been posted elsewhere on the Internet, maybe by others attributing these pictures to themselves, maybe before OP said they were taken, or giving an altogether different "story" for them, implying that someone at least (not even necessarily OP, if their pictures were harvested/stolen), is lying, and karma-farming.
It can also help spot if these pictures were modified, find their original source, find more about them, etc.
It's not any indication that this is the case for the pictures in this post. It's just a toolbox for others to easily check, and comment/report if they found some issue.

Golden owner here 👋.
It’s probably because she’s an asshole 😂
Mine definitely is. Sometimes when she protests it’s because she wants to go a different way, so I’ll usually indulge her. She also bites the leash still (at almost 8 years) when she doesn’t get her way, e.g. we won’t let her pick up a moldy tennis ball, or greet a passing dog.
Treats help. And I’ve been working on ‘let’s go’ with a gentle tug of the leash. If she complies I reward it.
5
u/HK_Shooter_1301 1d ago

Maple does this when she is done walking , I am the “Spare Human” and she wants to get back to my wife who is her “Emotional Support Human” as fast as possible. She will do her business and then turn around and head straight back to the house. At this point I don’t even put a leash on her for 90% of our walks. But that took a long time and training to get there.
6
u/wrhhill 1d ago
Ohhhh. I strongly think mine had a built in GPS system and she knew that I was heading home. And nope. Not going home.
😂😂 I had to wait and eventually walked the opposite way and made detour , sometimes with distraction as well. Good thing that mine could be distracted easily. Then, we headed home.

My dog likes to stop and sniff or roll around in the grass. My walks basically have two phases, leisurely stroll with plenty of sniffing and rolling around then after she poops we get to business and put in some distance at a good pace.
If it is too hot out my dog will try to cut the walk short by taking turns to head back towards the house.

u/BlacksmithStatus1283 1d ago
It’s a learned behaviour. She realised early on that you would focus on her and her only when she pancaked or flopped on her side during walks.
2
u/Vegetable-Maximum445 19h ago
This! Dogs only do what works for them - that’s why it’s SO important to never allow behavior that you do not want. It’s much easier to create the rules & enforce them than it is to undue behavior. Pack leaders must set the rules - not the dog. It’s not being mean, it’s just letting the dog know your expectations & rewarding them when they comply.
