Image The SS City of Adelaide is a 19th-century shipwreck whose hull has been reclaimed by mangroves, forming an artificial island in Queensland, Australia.

I live on that island. Nice place. This is the view facing the mainland. That shipwreck is to the right of the image behind the hill

For a second I thought you were claiming to live on the ship island! Lol

Pricey place to live?

Not really. You can buy an acre plot of land on the island for just over $500,000 AUD which is about 350,000 USD

Land id one thing. What's the cost of building there compared to the mainland?

Building is so so. Usually there are exceptions and ordinances, along with supporting infastructure to assist.

That being said I would be wanting all island homes to be cyclone proof here.

There have been some major issues with island homes in Queensland recently. Its not an easy feat. You really need a reason to be living out there.

Would have thought all builds will in the last 30-35 years would have been built to withstand cyclones. Mates house in Hervey Bay definitely is and that place is 30 plus years old.

Yeah cannot see a reason for me to live on Magnetic Island. Nor Townsville for that matter. Didn't think much of the place when I visited.

Basically all houses are built for cyclones as if they were not, they would have already been blown away and replaced with one that is cyclone rated as it is mandatory to build to cyclone standard. And it's probably around 15%-25% more expensive to build on the island. So it is a bit more pricey than building a home in Melbourne. I personally like Townsville, it's probably the largest city I'd live in. It has a lot of great areas to explore if you are into camping. But Townsville definitely has a few drawbacks.

And how much for the 19th century ship?

Look it up, Magnetic Island. And it is a 20 minute boat ride to the mainland where a decent size city for Australia is

Live in Melbourne and stayed in Townsville a few years back. Hardly a city. Living on islands is typically more expensive. That's why I asked.

There is something similar at Homebush Bay, Sydney, with the SS Ayrfield

It makes an interesting contrast with the high-rises of Rhodes.

Another one in Homebush bay is HMAS Karangi

Sounds like a tricky quiz question.

Host: The City of Adelaide is located in which Australian state?
Player: <buzz> South Australia.
Host: That is incorrect. The answer is Queensland.

There's an early 20th century schooner like this in Anacortes, Washington, USA.

Speaking as a Trekker, I look at this and think there was big potential for any of the Star Trek series to do an episode or a comic of a derelict starship that has a forest in it.

🎶Lightning, Lightning, Lightning, Lightning on the water

My great grandfather sailed upon a clipper ship
Called the City of Adelaide
She carried copper, wool and men round the colonies
Cut through those white horses like a blade

And she was lightning in the water when the wind pulled at her sails
Made South Australia in sixty-five days
Filled with low cost steerage class Scottish immigrants
Bound for the city of Adelaide🎶
