Announcement We Now Have an Additional Moderator

Hi everyone. I just wanted to let everyone know that we now have an additional moderator. Everyone please congratulate u/Folkvore and please be respectful towards them.

iMac and I are both still mods as well, but between the group having gotten bigger and some changes in our schedules and such in our lives offline it was becoming too much for a team of two and we really needed a third person.

Thanks so much everyone.

Pop culture The world's famous bear is 100 this week

I've heard Winnie The Pooh is 100 this week. We all have grown up with him, films, books, etc. I have recently learnt (badly) that he is now a video game. I didn't know this. What one did you grow up? I grew up on 1932, and 1966. I have a generation alpha son and he has grown up on the same. I have never 2001 or 2026 before.

25 is basically 30s.

35 is basically 40s

45 is basically 50s

So that can only mean that 15 is basically 20s.

We’re all cooked.

Discussion Many young Americans don't identify with Gen Z

Post image
• Upvotes

As a European, I'm proud of American young adults. Most of them reject generational labels. If we take generalizations into a consideration, most people associate Gen Z with high school teenagers, instead of adults in their 20s. People are waking up from generational BS.

Keep up the good fight, Americans. I'm rooting for you!

Discussion Question for the older side of millennials, did the younger side of your generation also call you old and feel very separated from you growing up or is that just the gen Z ageism that makes younger gen Z be like this with us?

• Upvotes

It is so strange, to see people in their early 20s calling us uncs and stuff, idk if it's just cause they are very young

Pop culture Does Gen Z know most things they like/say/do is originally old?

I'm a '90s born millennial who grew up with, and LOVES, '80s and older music, TV shows/movies, etc. I love all older time periods regarding art, architecture, fashion, and so on. Literally from Ancient Greece/Rome to 1989. My parents were born in the '60s and listened to the music of their youth while I was growing up.

One of my many favorite '80s shows is Falcon Crest. One of the characters uses the term "gaslight" exactly how people use it now. Gen Z, did you know it's been around that long? There's actually a 1940s movie called Gaslight and that's where I hear the term originated from.

I also love Miami Vice. In one episode, Crockett mentions "ice" on the hands of a drug dealer/victim or other, and it's clear he means jewelry. They were already saying that back then. And they were already using those wind resistant torch lighters back then too. And you know that look where guys have a beard with the undercut hairstyle? There are guys in Miami Vice who look like that (personally, I think it's hot). Anyway, that was already a look.

Does Gen Z also know that Punk rockers were already dying their hair crazy colors in the 1970s? In the movie An American Werewolf in London, there's a Punk with a shaved head in two colors and black leopard spots all over. That film came out in 1981... Once, I actually did leopard spots on the shaved sides of my mohawk because of that. I still have a mohawk.

Not to mention colored powders on wigs in the 1700s to have pink or green or whatever color hair. That Marie Antoinette movie with Kirsten Dunst was not an exaggeration. Banger soundtrack as well. Gen Z, do you even know who Gang of Four or Siouxsie & The Banshees are? And totally mismatched with the era, but I digress.

Vibes. This is a big one. People have been saying that for decades. The Beach Boys were already picking up good vibrations in the '60s. Stanley on the Golden Girls in the '80s wanted to take his son out to a bar and create good vibes. Dorothy said she could dig it. Everything is old and you're not doing anything new!

My point with this post is that I **want** people younger than 30 telling me that they are already aware of everything I mentioned. I want you to make me eat my words and show me you know what's up (without being rude). If you're born after the year 2000 and have a grasp on history, thank you, and this post is not directed at you, but to your peers who don't know about these things.

Discussion I don't have a problem with the progressive values of Gen Z. I also think Gen Z was too moralizing in their expression of their views, although this is changing over the past few years. Do you agree?

I think Gen Z people often believe in progressive content of beliefs. But we also are culturally conservative in a sense. I believe this since Gen Z people are more cautious, have less sex, and for some reason, some gendered social roles are returning. People are watching other people for them to make mistakes because of the internet and social media.

I get conservative vibes, and less uninhibited type liberalism from my generation. We are generally speaking more straight laced than millennials and Gen X people were at our age. Conformist is the word I am looking for.

I don't like liberalism as institutionalism, and preferred when liberalism existed outside of institutions. It is probably responsible for the current conformist feel.

At the same time, many Gen Z people support transgender people, gay people, are against ableism, and many things like that. I think that is progressive style thinking, but it's framing is just different than earlier liberal people.

Earlier progressives were about breaking down systems rather than steering it. During the hippie time, during the Reagan era, and up until the War on Terror, progressivism was all from this outsider and freedom focused perspective. Progressives used to be rebels challenging the system.

I don't like how when progressivism won in the 2010s, it became fused with conservative associated values. Like moral respectability and a clean cut culture that is soft. I will blame this shift for why my generation, Gen Z, is like this.

At least it is changing somewhat by now. I like the direction at least internet culture is taking, where people can be more dirtbag regardless of the side they are on.

Fashion 👘 Millennial fashion: What is the problem?

As a millennial, I often see gen Z making fun of millennial fashion. As a fashion enjoyer, I never quite understood it.

What do gen Z make fun of? Of the clothes we wore during our youth? Or is it what we wear now? Most millennials around me that follow fashion trends do follow fashion, and it often just looks like a more-preppy genZ style.

So, I wonder, what do gen Z mean by bad fashion? Is it the history, or is it current fashion of millennials - and what exactly do they consider so bad about millennials' fashion?

Or is it just a running joke and when genZ spot a well-dressed millenial, they assume they're genZ?

EDIT: It doesn't bother me what genZ thinks. I'm just curious and since I want to know the truth, I'm asking a question. It's not that deep. Not every question is a complaint. I get redditors mostly don't care about fashion, so I should've known before asking hahaha. It is fun for me to understand things I'm curious about.

Discussion The reason late 90s borns feel they're millennial is because they had a millennial childhood but if you look at their high school and early 20s years they lean more gen z.They had instagram snapchat vine group chats in high school. Then TikTok twitch in early 20s.

You guys have to admit you're gen z. You guys didn't have the typical millennial flip phones my space life in high school/young adult .You may not have had the stereotypical gen z young years but that doesn't matter a lot of that stuff is really just late z and gen alpha.

It is ok to be young and gen z still you don't want to be a grumpy millennial with 4 kids.
