Was there a classic game that had a genuinely obtuse unlock or secret

1.3k Upvotes

There were a lot of old videos on how to unlock secrets in games. Like in smash bros brawl, unlocking master hand needed you to defeat 50 enemies in cruel melee. Then press 2 on the wii remote to unlock a secret character slot. Obviously we know these are fake, but I don't know how legitimate they sounded at the time.

I get people were young that generation (myself included) But these seem so absurd that somebody had to figure out they were fake. But I'm wondering if any of these overly descriptive "secrets" were actually real. Like how you can unlock rosalina in mario kart wii for having galaxy.

Why do we enjoy running a shop in games so much? (I know, I know, some don't)

Lately I have played The Walking Trade and enjoyed it a bunch.

Other games I have enjoyed have been TCG Card Shop Simulator, Budgie's Bug Shop, Moonlighter and Mining Merchant.

What do you think it is about these games, that are so compelling? (yeye, I know, not for everyone)

And what are some store games that I should look into?

Games clearly based around one film director.

I’m currently in the middle of Ghost of Tsushima, which wears it’ s Kurosawa influence clearly on it’s sleeve.

It reminded me of how much Alan Wake II reminded me of the holy trinity of weird film Davids - Lynch, Cronenberg and Fincher.

What other games have a sense that one film director was the inspiration throughout?

Why you shouldn't buy into the hype surrounding Squadron42.

I am not falling into the Squadron42 hype.

Its being hyped quite a bit. My YouTube feed - and I assume - the YouTube feeds of anyone that follows Star Citizen, is filled with positive content surrounding the title.

But I'm not falling into it...

Because I remember

I remember

I remember when SQ42 was initially slated to release in 2014, and it was then pushed back, not for a year, or two years, or even three years, but 12 fucking years.

12... fucking... years...

I remember that, I know that most have forgotten, but I have not.

I remember the tales of Server Meshing going into Star Citizen in 2017. Server Meshing didn't go in until like 2023. That's a 7 year gap.

I remember the "Year of Playability" for Star Citizen. The year that was supposted to take that game, and transform it from buggy wreck into a polished and solid game that you could play. That year has passed, and I've played Star Citizen recently, and its still a buggy wreck.

CIG lies

And they're extravagant lies.

The game is still an alpha after 14 years they say. You shouldn't expect better they say.

Its not too long they say, its just like GTA6 (this is wrong, Rockstar released RDR2 - arguably the best game ever made - in 2018, GTA6 comes only 8 years after their last masterpiece mega-hit, claiming that development took 14 years is what happens when you count from GTA5's release, and include every moment anyone even thought about GTA6 - even when they were hard at work on RDR2). 14 years is normal for a AAA game they say - also a lie.

I might be wrong

Its possible, maybe SQ42 will indeed release in 2027 (I doubt it) and maybe it will really be this masterpiece AAA level game, but I doubt it.

I really doubt it.

I doubt it because where there's smoke, there's usually fire. We have every reason to believe that CIG is mostly incapable of delivering a compelling game experience. They've failed with Star Citizen - at least so far - and the 12 year gap with regard to SQ42 tells us that they're full of shit. No game is ready and then gets a 12 year delay. If it was really ready, it wouldn't have gotten a 12 year delay.

The one thing CIG does well, is control the conversation

Here on reddit, criticize CIG, and eventually mods will come after you. I've been banned from several Star Citizen reddits for being critical of the game. I was once banned from an SC reddit for merely pointing out that Star CItizen has been in development for 14 years - as that's apparently not something you're allowed to bring up in Star Citizen circles.

I do not know for sure that CIG controls most of the SC subs here on reddit, but I suspect they do.

And of course they also controlled the press surrounding their Squadron42 event. Only the whitest of white knight YouTube content creators were allowed to attend. No real press. Its hard to prove a negative, but as far as I can tell, no one from Gamespot or IGN was invited.

This was a giveaway to biased CIG influencers, who are out there doing CIG a solid day in day out by talking about amazing upcoming features and not talking about delays, bugs, and the failure of CIG to deliver.

I think they've controlled the conversation surrounding SQ42.

Time will tell, but I'm not buying the hype.

EDIT: Look at the CIG bots go. Every time you post something negative about CIG, you get a titdal wave of bots downvoting and making snarky comments. If your post does well enough, sometimes it will push through the bots, and you'll get a 90% upvote rate, but oftentimes the bots win, and push the post down until its lost - unless people upvote the post... and fight the bots.

Do you have unexpected happy place/cosy games that help you get out of slumps?

For me its the more modern Resident Evil games ( from 7, Remakes included) and the same with Silent Hill (2R, f and Townfall). Dunno why when sometimes it makes me really tense but I also like to save and try to do things perfectly such as sneaking by and using less ammo over and over until I am happy, I know they should be stressful experiences somewhat and they can be, but whenever I hit a slump where my brain won't let me play what I want (most recently The Blood of the Dawnwalker and Control Resonant) these games help me break out of that paralysis and just lock in. Before this it used to be souls games and soulslikes but I think these games require less time investment and it allows me to go back to what I wanted to play faster once I complete a playthrough.

So anyone else with unexpected/weird games or types of games they use to get out of their mental blocks and gaming slumps?

Man, I have had this game sitting in my back log forever. I finally decided to play it. I’m blown away by the game for the most part. The game play loop is satisfying as hell, the story is cool, the world matches the tone of the game. I knew I’d like this game but I didn’t know how much I would. Bend was cooking with this one.

Just completed my yearly October F.E.A.R + expansions playthrough Spoiler

Base F.E.A.R is excellent as always, Extraction Point is pretty good also, Perseus Mandate is kind of weaker and looks unfinished in some sections but still had a few interesting moments.

Playing on a new OLED almost made it feel like how it was playing on CRT for the first time back in the day.

I've been playing F.E.A.R every year for several years and never got bored of it, its like a few weeks before October I start getting thoughts of playing it and start getting a bit excited and to run through it again.

What's the game you absolutely regret buying at full price?

For me it was Resident Evil 3 Remake. I spent 70€ for that game, to just finish it in like 5 hours and got left with pretty much nothing after the ending.

Genuine question, what happened to Sony and PlayStation?

PlayStation has been my fav gaming console since i was a kid, and I’d defend it like it’s my own child. But now i’ve somehow come to hate it? But why? What’s really going on exactly? New top management? Bad business plans and decisions? Like it’s just crazy how almost the whole gaming community hates PlayStation now!

Bought some games on sale for PS5, do I play Dragon Age The Veilguard or Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake?

Last games I've played to get the idea, you'll also see i struggle to actually complete games-

The last game I was playing on the PS4 was Horizon Zero Dawn. I think I'm actually fairly close to finishing it and plan to do so at some point, especially when i get Horizon Foribidden West.

-After getting the Playstion 5 in May, I completed Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

-I've played to where the plate falls in FF7 Remake.

-I've never really played a horror game and have played a little Resident Evil Requiem.

-I've started playing Persona 5 Royal and am finishing the third palace.

PS4 and PS5 games Ive yet to play but own are: Final -Fantasy XVI

-Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

-Control

-Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4

Other information that can help- I played a little of Dragon Age Orgins and Inqusition but only the very start.

Ive played DQ 11S into the end game, and I've played quite a bit of DQ 8 and 9 and some of 6. I own 4, 5 and 7 but have only dabbled.

I haven't heard a ton about fhe DQ3 remake and I've heard mixed things about DATV. Although, I'd be playing it basically like a stand alone game.

(Apologize for format, I'm on mobile.

Thoughts guys?

edit to add: would you return Dragon Age to get 15 dollars back?

Quake VR: UNLEASHED 🔥 | Release Trailer

Another great looking VR mod I think deserves some attention outside of the usual VR circles.

"Quake VR: UNLEASHED (QVR:U) is an opinionated VR mod for Quake (1996) by Vittorio Romeo.

The mod aims to give total freedom to the player, turning most interactions into physics-based one and introducing fun and immersive mechanics such as dual wielding, melee, throwing, swimming, climbing, and more.

The original campaign and all official mission packs are fully playable. QVR:U also features an in-game map browser to play custom content from Quaddicted."

Which is better, Little Nigthmares 3 or Reanimal?

So me and my friend love the Little Nigthmares games, and have played the 2 first games. However now we're at a bit of a dilemma. LN3 is out, and it co-op, but Reanimal, which is made by the Little Nigthmares developers is also out, and is also co-op. We will probably olay both games eventualy, but would like to start with 1 of them. So the question is simple, which of them is the better game overall?

Star Wars: Galactic Racer has got to be the best Arcade Racer in about a decade, I would say the one of the best Racing Games out there.

1.3k Upvotes

Tldr: the game is a perfect mixture of Star Wars, Underground, Burnout Paradise City and Road Rash (PS1/PC)

First and foremost it is an Excellent Star Wars game.
It has best implementation of the World and Setting out there.

Planets, Characters, Vehicles, the Story, music, writing, graphics! All excellent, graphics and ART!

I think it also has the best implementation of Star Wars vehicle piloting, may be Squadrons comes close, but this is definitely better. It has very tactile experience, I found it annoying at the start, but as I play it has come around to become a lot of fun, going at about 900 kmph between in narrow lanes, with ice, lava, salt and acid around you keeping an eye on or Ramjet, on fellow racers and still having to handle a malfunction perfect. It makes you feel like Aniken from EP-I.

I would say it is also an Excellent Racer. It’s very very fast and skilful, while not being quite as technical as a SimRacer.
Rouge Light aspect of it is pretty important, it keeps you invested in the game, it keeps you on the edge of your seat, i have played Forza 4,5 and 6 in the past years, also a new other racing games like Hotwheels and one NFS game o don’t remember, but they all no stakes at all.
Stakes in the game makes you pay attention to the game, it’s such a breath of fresh air.

Btw, I am not saying that this game is TRY HARD or something like that, it has a lot of things that help you out,if you wanna use them, there is difficulty, but there is also a lot of styles that help you out a lot if you are having trouble, you have a option to have a auto pilot, not for the full race, but it can help you out if you need it.

All this being there the Game is Feature Complete.
- it runs well of Medium Specs and Steam Deck too.
- it has a 20-40 hour campaign, Side mission(6 hours), quick play, multiplayer.
- it has NO BATTLE PASSES, NO MTX.
- All Cosmetics Can be earned, except for deluxe editions ones.

For me it feels like a mixture of

ROAD RASH (PS1-PC)
- it has similar interactions with the racers like in RR when you could Smooze with them, it also has the Feeling of SPEED like RR which so few of the games have. Screwing without opponents and semi vehicular combat.

Burnout Paradise City
- it has the takedowns like it, also a fairly good sense of speed from here as well.

NFS Underground
- where you have to battle your way to the top. Very similar story. At least some parts of it.

That all being said,
There is one issue I dislike, while I love the burnout takedown cam, it doesn’t work as well as it does there, o have had many occasions that i have lost a race or even an Tour because of it. I would like an option to turn it off.

—-PS—-
Special thanks for making is 100% functional on Linux. Ace Combat 8 was a disappointing experience because of it.

Rogue Prince of Persia or Dragons Dogma 2 DLC?

Edit 3 : I got both. Gotta thank GRANDMA for coming to the rescue and getting me rogue after I got DD2DA

Edit 2 : I ended up getting Dragons Dogma 2 DLC because RPOP has been out for a long time now and the possibility that it goes on a deep sale soon is high. Thank you for your suggestions everyone who commented.

I want both of these games but can only afford one. Both of them look amazing for different reasons so I'm having a tough time deciding on one of them.

People who own either, or both, of these titles if appreciate some insight into what these games are like once the immediate novelty wears off and youre knee deep in the content.

Edit : ROGUE PRINCE OF PERSIA would be on Nintendo Switch for on the go handheld gaming.

DD2 DLC would be on PS5.

I miss mid 2000s Game soundtracks

Games soundtracks back then were just bangers man, a great way to discover new bands, you play a game like Prince of Persia Warrior Within and when those credits role, they with My Mind by Cold, and you just want to rip it on a CD to play on repeat.

Game music now just don't do that anymore, it's all setting appropriate music, songs that wouldn't be out of place for the setting, nah man, give me my Nu Metal bands blasting some head bangers after a bad ass campaign or during an epic shoot out.
