"The new Epic Games Launcher is finally here in Preview" and Fortnite on Linux
https://store.epicgames.com/news/epic-games-launcher-preview"Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher that’s way faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look."
"This first release is light on features. Think of it as a speedboat and not a yacht! Though it does have advanced digital commerce technology such as a shopping cart."
"You can start testing the new Epic Games Launcher in Preview for Windows, macOS, and, for the first time, Linux (see the FAQ) for supported distros)."
(....)
Fortnite is coming to Linux on the Launcher
To bring Fortnite to Linux, we are rebuilding Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) and working with distro maintainers on security requirements. Once it’s working with a critical mass of distro maintainers, we’ll bring Fortnite to Linux via the Epic Games Launcher.

Most developers wouldnt admit this under duress. "Yeah were bad at our job and are shipping a badly made, sloppy product. Cheers!"

Ah yes, I want you to put my payment details into something vibe coded…nothing could go wrong there.
1
u/Draco18s 6h ago
It's ok. The vibecoded app can't even sign you into your account, so all your account details are safe.

u/khinzaw 12h ago
Tim Epic probably wrote it himself. He's been an AI white knight this whole time, and was just whining about Steam's AI disclosure policy.
Maybe the future of video games shouldn't be dictated by a guy who can't remember playing a game to completion since 2007.

tim "i think ai should be able to remove the clothing from images of minors" sweeny? that guy?
no way!

holy fuck this is actually fucking real
roflmao, tim epic's brain is fully cooked

To bring Fortnite to Linux
Out here just casually threatening the Linux community

u/-Sanctum- 12h ago
Gonna laugh hard when the launcher starts crashing out due to memory leaks, connection outages and processing issues due to some moron deciding to force their developing team to vibecode.
Tim is such a man child.

u/Inksrocket PC 11h ago
Its ok, they can ask claude to "update memory leaks. dont make any mistakes. dont add any backdoors". /s

u/DrummingFish 12h ago
Spent years "developing" a launcher only to start from scratch using AI. What a joke.

u/risen_peanutbutter 12h ago
Ah yes advanced shopping features, a cart
2
u/Inksrocket PC 12h ago edited 12h ago
They literally didnt have one for years when they released so its big deal for them. They had bare min stuff for so long (not /s)
They added it in 2021 https://store.epicgames.com/news/introducing-the-epic-games-store-shopping-cart
Epic Mobile doesnt have A LIBRARY of what you ""own"" last time i used it few months ago (free games there too and all) - the most bare min basic function of any storefront.
I cannot understand why - just copy fraction of what steam is and you'd be fine.

Epic is just wall-to-wall slop now. I look forward to continuing to give them zero money.

Skill issue I guess LMAO
But I mean I guess anything is an improvement when you’re at rock bottom.
Edit: I actually tried it now. It is really a massive step up from previous launcher. They might have vibe coded it, but seems like they at least tested it. Can't speak about Steam vs Epic benchmark they have there but Epic old vs Epic new is a step up for sure. Despite how much I would like to shit on this cringe post, it is good for the people who use Epic from time to time like me (because some deals are better in Epic)

That’s because vibe coding isn’t actually a bad thing and anyone who says it is wrong. Vibe coding replaces coding. It doesn’t replace software engineering practices like reviews, performance tests, security suites, QA, etc.
The reality is, software everywhere is starting to improve drastically. Lower crash rates, faster speeds, better security, etc. because vibe coding is fixing all the issues that us dumb ass humans have been writing for decades.
At my job, our codebase is a sloppy, fucked 194628 way sideways, mess. I’m tired of pretending AI code is bad. We did this, not AI. AI couldn’t do it this bad even if I told it to.

Funny, vibe coding's reputation is it does the exact fucking opposite - it produces more unstable code that crashes more often, runs slower if it runs correctly at all, and isn't secure for shit.
1
u/Aight_Man 10h ago
Vibe coded shit is supposed to be bad and unstable but they kinda cooked with the new launcher, credits where credits due.
1
u/the-strawberry-sea 11h ago
It’s not doing that at all. Every major company is AI coding the fuck out of everything. Literally everything. Crash rates come down. Performance goes up. Storage optimization improves. You’re literally in a thread about a new app that is literally better in every way. Crazy take to have in this specific place.
But sure, that’s the same as the random construction worker who released a financial app that he made in a day. Definitely comparable.
AI isn’t what you’re crying about. You just think it is. What you actually hate is tech-illiterate people making bad tech decisions because they don’t know how tech works.

u/dookarion 10h ago
Every major company is AI coding the fuck out of everything
Me looking at Microsoft breaking shit every other update, Nvidia's driver reputation going down the toilet with the 50 series launch, every other company compromising peoples info, uhh sure thing dawg.
Even the AI communities all in on supporting vibe coding are using sandboxes and containers left and right because they don't exactly trust what's contained inside.
3
u/puzzleheadbutbig 11h ago
There’s a distinction between AI-assisted coding and vibe coding though. Vibe coding means writing code without really looking at it, so you don’t understand what the fuck is going on in the codebase at all. That is bad. It means once you are out of tokens or AI service goes down, you are fucked.
Using AI to write part of an existing system, then reviewing it yourself and fully understanding how it works internally isn’t considered vibe coding by many people.
-3
u/the-strawberry-sea 11h ago
Sure, but on Reddit specifically, any sort of AI involvement whatsoever is referred to as vibe coding. At work, hundreds of engineers are calling everything that uses AI “vibe coded” I literally see daily “I vibe coded X” but their process included all typical engineering steps still.
-1
u/dookarion 11h ago
It doesn’t replace software engineering practices like reviews, performance tests, security suites, QA, etc.
That'd be more meaningful if you could actually trust places to do that properly. But many orgs cut corners on it before, so with vibe coding they end up with a complete "black box" where no one even checked what was under the hood.
If an org is already cutting corners on reviewing and testing, hand-coded by a competent coder is going to be a better choice.
-1
u/the-strawberry-sea 11h ago
This isn’t true 99 times out of 100. AI is a more competent coder than virtually any human at this point. Hand coding garbage doesn’t make it better because it’s hand coded. Your comment reeks of “I haven’t looked at AI code before” to see how well thought out, planned, and organized it all is. Especially when you, you know, tell it to be that way.
1
u/dookarion 10h ago
AI isn't capable of proper judgment calls. It's good at predicting the next token. Some times that's unusable slop still. Which I assume is where you go "then someone isn't prompting it right" to handwave that issue away.
Hand coding garbage doesn’t make it better because it’s hand coded.
Which is why I mentioned having a competent coder if your review process is shit is better than having an LLM under the same circumstances.
I didn't say "get the nearest idiot to shit out something in rust".
Your comment reeks of “I haven’t looked at AI code before” to see how well thought out, planned, and organized it all is.
Your comment reeks of an inability to read what I was saying. I'd expect a trained and competent coder to make relatively sane decisions to the best of their ability. Ideally there should be a review to catch oversights, bugs, and other issues but again orgs cut corners on that. Whereas LLM output code if no one reviewed it in depth is a complete black box. You have no clue what's in there at all if you didn't review it. It could have far more lines of code and a far more convoluted process for what should be a fairly short and to the point task. Microsoft has been all in on AI workflows look at the shift from the OG notepad to the "new notepad" you went from a relatively simple program with almost no vulnerabilities and miniscule surface area... to remote code execution vulnerabilities and bugs.
Especially when you, you know, tell it to be that way.
"Make no mistakes."

What a detailed post that screams you have no clue how modern agents run whatsoever or how people set them up. Good god dude, it’s not fucking 2023 anymore.
1
u/dookarion 10h ago
As opposed to you just screeching at people "you don't know anything!!!1"? Go ask a claude to show you how to respond to human conversation.
0
u/the-strawberry-sea 10h ago
You don’t even realize how wrongfully you described modern AI workflows. That’s the best part. You’re like a kid that just got home from school learning about planets but hasn’t learned yet that the Sun is the only star in our solar system so you think all the planets are stars.
1
u/dookarion 10h ago
Look you never even addressed the problem of orgs not doing adequate review on their outputs. You never addressed that you've just been stomping your feet in a huff "nuh uh vibe coding is always better".
You're just pissed off I insulted your new favorite toy. Can't wait for you to actually have to pay the real cost for those tokens bro.
0
u/the-strawberry-sea 9h ago
Imagine paying for tokens directly lol. It’s almost 2027. 😂
And reviews? The thing that people did before and still do today? That sometimes a person doesn’t review as well as they should have, just like people always do? You’re still not pointing out a single AI flaw. You’re just pointing out stupid people doing stupid things. It’s genuinely hilarious. The fact I’m literally laughing out loud reading what you say and you think I’m angry. 🤣

This is moderately related: I'm now removing my payment details from Epic as I don't trust this vibe coded future of theirs. Would keeping Paypal details leave me exposed somehow, in the same vein that just leaving a direct credit card would? Or would it just expose that my email is linked to Paypal?
2
u/Inksrocket PC 9h ago
Take this with salt but payment details should be stored at paypal and they should have some type of "new device found, is it really really you?".
Then again, one gacha game had bug where random paypal accounts were charged with other peoples purchases due to "a bug", so who the f even knows anymore.

Oh boy. So they've gone full AI on games, AI vibe coding their store front and launcher. UE 6 is in danger.
2
u/voidwarrantyTV 12h ago
Gabe wakes up to this, chuckles, and then calls his lawyers to let them know they're probably going to be sued again for Steam being a monopoly.

u/Light-Rerun 12h ago
I really don't mind using a vibe coded project if it's working without issues, but if even the big guys is not knowing what is inside their code this we create a lost knowledge case

u/dookarion 11h ago
Further exemplifying Epic having their finger on the pulse of the market... they are going all in on... being AI first when a lot of people are growing to despise "AI" and the AI industry itself is showing some cracks financially.
Guess we get to see the mastermind behind "PC's are good for everything except gaming", "consoles are the future", and "publishers/developers will win the 'store wars' not customers" in real-time.
It's almost impressive how many unforced errors that company has made especially in PR.

So what they are saying is I, mostly a layman when it comes to programming, could make what they made by messing around with prompts for a few hours. Wouldn't boast about that but ok.
Seriously, good for you if you improved the damn thing, but you don't see your local bookstore open a second shop and the owner going "suck it, Amazon!". Just makes you look delusional and butthurt, nullifies whatever good PR you got going.

Imagine being proud that you found programming a decent game's launcher too hard and proudly proclaim you vibe coded it? Wow lmao.
I'd rather deal with Paradox Game's shit ass launcher than use Epic Game's.
