A 12-year-old indie game getting rollback netcode before some modern AAA games is wild 💀

Isn't rollback the standard for recent fighting games?

For the most part but even some games (mainly slightly pre covid like Soul Calibur 6) just don't get it added.

Then again by that point, SC6 lost steam but even something like SC6 could likely get one in the future.

Edit: Smash Ultmate was a much better example of a game that should have gotten rollback.

It is now, but a great majority of Japanese fighting game devs stuck with delay-based netcode because they didn't see rollback as a big deal until COVID.

because they didn't see rollback as a big deal until COVID they didn't think sales would be affected so much without it

FTFY

Like… only super recently.

Most devs did not bother with rollback, or had an awful implementation of it until Covid happened. I don’t think it was until Guilty Gear Strive that JP developers took implementing rollback seriously.

It is kinda standard at the moment, but its also kinda messy fix for a problem you would rather not have at all. So lots of people in the dev teams would want to fix the underlying issues properly rather than rely on storing or recalculating older state and changing things that have already been shown to players.

Though you can't fix speed of light and electric signals, so you might still need some ability to keep the fixed state and sync point slightly in the past.

Could you try explaining what you mean again? But more clearly?

Rollback is one possible methods to handle network delay between two client. Its kinda hacky one though. It relies for the game to make predictions about what inputs other players have done before receiving information about what these input are. If you predicted right, everything is good. If you predicted wrong, you need rollback (hence the name) the game state to when the input was made and then calculate all the changes again.

Imagine you need to calculate the state again from up to 10 frames back, you might need to keep 10 copies of the game state in memory and you might need to do 10 frames worth of updates again. To not cause frame delays, you would need to be able to calculate these updates in a single frame, so you would have to optimize the came with expectation that only 10 % of computation power is being used on logic side. And if you actually have network delay that fits into single frame, all that memory and optimization for update time was wasted.

Many gamedevs would rather eliminate the delay (physics give some hard limits to this, so can't do it completely, but usually its just a small portion of the whole delay), fit it inside other delays (send input first thing each frame, spend most of the frame time in something else, then update opponents on last ms when you have their inputs received), or make sure the prediction is always correct enough that you don't need to roll back (just adjust the current state rather than recompute it from older state).

Also, during these 10 frames you might have seen that you got a hit, but the rollback might make it so that you missed. It is often considered bad practice to change something that the player has already seen, especially against them.

While its best solution we have at the present, at least in its more advanced forms, many developers kinda live in hope that its solution to problem they don't have to deal with or that they can solve in more clean way.

One of most fun multiplayer games for me personally.

Was Nighogg 2 such a disappointment that they had to go back to 1? Genuine question

It's nice of them they're still improving their older titles for the ones still playing them though

They're quite different games. Nidhogg 2 has more of a party game vibe while Nidhogg 1 can get pretty sweaty

The art style definitely pushed me off.

Yes. I don't even see Nidhogg 2 as a successor to Nidhogg.

Quite a few games that bombed with the sequel seem to have started looking backwards. I think Payday 2 just got a new heist or something.

In PayDay's case they better, 3 is just a mess at a core level, unless they want to redo it from scratch nothing will change.

DSP must be very unhappy with the proliferation of rollback net code

Funny, I was under the impression that it already had rollback.

Today, I learned.

How has this game never come to switch? Nidhog 1 i mean

I saw Rollback netcode in starcraft as well, is this going to happen to all multiplayer games?

3

u/MrASK15 7h ago

Even tabletop and turn-based strategy.

Kidding. It ultimately depends on:

  • The publisher's interest and RoI

  • How feasible the retrofitting process is

  • The genre

The starcraft one seems to be community driven rather than publisher, maybe it was coincidence I saw that one last week

Being able to practise on a specific map without replaying Arcade should make it much easier to work on the section where you keep losing ground.

Ah yes, the classic 2014 surprise update.

I read this as:

(Nidhogg Adds) Rollback (Netcode, Training Mode, and More)

rather than as:

Nidhogg Adds ((Rollback Netcode), (Training Mode), and (More))

As in minions of certain wyrm from Norse mythology revert some earlier update as faulty, kinda weirded out by how they got into gamedev.

Jesse what the fuck are you talking about?
