Super Mario 64 running on the Atari Jaguar

It can barely do the math.

u/Waterfish3333 2d ago
There’s a YouTube named Pannenkoek2012 who is basically the expert on Mario 64, and he has a ton of videos that go way in depth on the mechanics of the game.
It does a ton of stuff every frame so not surprising the Jaguar lags a fair bit. I do wonder if they had to turn down the number of checks every frame.

u/TehWildMan_ 2d ago
But before we can talk about performance of SM64 on the Jaguar, we need to talk about parallel universes.

16
u/LilMoWithTheGimpyLeg 2d ago
Kaze's recode of the game would probably run better. Although I think he coded it specifically to work with the Expansion Pak, so maybe not.
7
u/DonutHoles4Ever 2d ago
Oh yeah that's the guy who used Mario 64 to discover parallel universe theory and then prove it using the spider bug thing. Insane how Nintendo hid string theory inside their video game and time travel.
2
u/StrategyEven3974 1d ago
truly would not put it past Nintendo.
Gonna turn out they had functional quantum computing operating on the Switch with TOTK or some shit.
2
u/thisisjustascreename 1d ago
IIRC Super Mario 64 was for some reason compiled in debug mode for the original release build so it runs like total shit, optimizers have gotten it running pretty damn good on original hardware.

"Atari Jaguar"
Man. I feel old now. Only knew 1 person with that.
30
u/Spend-Automatic 2d ago
Back in the day, this and the 3DO were the unattainable high end consoles
21
u/Scoth42 2d ago
And then the Neo Geo which was just another level above both of those, since it was practically an arcade machine stuffed into a home console (with cart sizes to match.)
14
u/BigLan2 2d ago
Neo Geo cart pricing too. Only for the rich kids.
9
u/dukeofgonzo 2d ago
I slept over at a spoiled rich kid's house because he had ALL the consoles, to include Neo Geo. He was a spoiled prick but not enough to keep me away from his video games.
6
u/Jeff1N 2d ago
I have never even seen one, but considering it was released in 1990 and received 90MB cartridges I can imagine how massive and expensive those cartridges were...
5
u/tooclosetocall82 2d ago
About $200. Crazy thing is some Super Nintendo games were $70 for 4MB so not really as bad as you might think…
10
u/shiba-on-parade 2d ago
Even more than that. My copy of SF2T was 79.99
2
u/SonofaSlumlord 1d ago
Final Fantasy 3 was close to $90 at some places back in the day also. I remember I wanted it for my birthday and my parents said no because it was so much more than the other games.
2
u/shiba-on-parade 1d ago
Yeah, I remember Phantasy Star IV on Genesis being $99.... We waited a bit before we picked it up lol
1
u/ThrowawayusGenerica 1d ago
I mean, the MSRP of the SNES itself was $199
You could get yourself a SNES, Mario All-Stars and a McChicken for that money

9
u/calicoarmz 2d ago
The only “unattainable” console from back then, worth having, was the Neo Geo.

u/x_scion_x 2d ago
Loved my 3do. Was my first real expensive purchase iirc.
Laser eventually died but man i wish ib could go back and play some of those games.
1
u/acepukas 1d ago
I had one. It kinda sucked but it did introduce me to some sick games at the time that I might not have otherwise played (since I didn't have a decent PC) namely, Star Control 2 and original X-COM. Was worth is just for those.
4
u/fukkdisshitt 2d ago
This guy at church had a 3DO. I got to play it one time when he had a bbq. Even as a kid i thought it was awful
9
u/anonymous-slacker 2d ago
Oh man, it’s been a while. How have you been? Sorry to say I sold my entire Atari Jaguar collection in 2006.
7
u/illtakeachinchilla 2d ago
The only regrets in my life are pawned consoles and guitars. Damn, I feel you.
4
u/robsteezy 2d ago
If it makes you feel better, most of us 80s/90s kids had our folks scrap most of our stuff that is now being sold as retro at 100x value. lol.
3
u/x_scion_x 2d ago
Had a friend sell a box of my NES stuff i left at his house for drugs.
Was a rather large box with multiple controllers, the NES advantage controller, and probably 50+ games. Was bitter about that for quite awhile.

u/Quirky-Parsnips 1d ago
You can buy a used SNES rn for less than they cost 30 years ago. They're not great stores of value.
1
u/SonofaSlumlord 1d ago
Id probably be able to retire already if my Mom hadnt thrown out all my action figures from the 80's and 90's...
4
u/HoeCage 2d ago
Legitimately wouldn’t have known about its existence as a kid without AVGN. AVGN was a gold mine as a 10 year old getting exposed to all the gaming history I missed.
Adam Koralik’s Keep Dreaming series was my first exposure to the Dreamcast as well which gave me FOMO like no other. So ahead of its time and would have loved to have been born just a few years earlier so I could have truly experienced that generational leap.
1
u/CrackPipeBilly 2d ago
Damn, are you me? I've had those exact same thoughts around the dreamcast. Was born in 97 so I was a little too late to get to experience the Dreamcast but man everything about that console was so cool and ahead of its time. A console having a built in modem back then was unheard of. I wish I could've been born earlier to experience a lot of gaming related things when they were brand new; I often think about what the vibes would've been like playing something like Silent Hill 2 when it was brand new back in 2001 on a ps2 and an old CRT television.

To be fair, it was stupid expensive, didn't have many worthwhile games, and was released during a poorly timed window,
2
u/cronson 1d ago
It wasn't stupid expensive. It launched at $250, which wasn't nuts (the SNES was $200 at this time). The 3DO and CDi were insanely expensive, and the Neo Geo.
3
u/x_scion_x 15h ago
Loved my 3DO, but yea, pretty sure it was around $700?
God I miss those games
- Gex
- Psychic Detective
- Killing Time
- P.O.'d
- Braindead - 13 (loved this one)
2
2
u/lordsnarf 11h ago
All pretty good games, for sure. The issue is, from a modern perspective, most of the good games have better versions on other consoles. I'm sure Jaguar owners at the time had no issue finding at least a few games worth their time.
2
u/x_scion_x 11h ago
Yea I downloaded P.O'd and Killing Time on PS Network. (I know Gex has been released for multiple console), I'd like to find somewhere to play Psychic Detective or Braindead -13 again though.
Honestly though, they would probably also be put on the back burner like all the other games now lol.

u/lordsnarf 11h ago
You're right, I was misremebering. The 3DO and CDi were definitely what I was thinking of.

u/ThePopeofHell 2d ago
I wanted one so bad at the time and now that it’s well known that the marketing was basically stretching the truth on the specs I’m glad I dodged the bullet
22
u/CrayCrayWyatt 2d ago
It was 64 bits after all! 🤯

u/Attila226 2d ago edited 2d ago
The Atari Jaguar had a 64-bit object processor, a 64-bit blitter, and a 64-bit system data bus, alongside two 32-bit RISC processors (the GPU in Tom and the DSP in Jerry) and a Motorola 68000 CPU with a 16-bit external data bus.

That’s crazy, but I wanna see the Mario 64 port on a SNES FX chip that it was originally supposed to be on

Well, Atari did market it as the first 64 bit console, so might as well put it to the test.

I've always heard people talk about feeling sick when 3D games were new, but I never understood. I get it now.
This is super impressive but it's so hard to look at.

Finally a version of Mario 64 with an even worse camera.
3
u/Larkson9999 2d ago
Sonic 06 still holds that title
1
u/Berkuts_Lance_Plus 8h ago
Sonic '06 holds the title of "version of Mario 64 with the worst camera"?
3
u/Palehorse13 2d ago
Mario 64 doesn't even have a bad camera.
3
u/Matmanreturns 1d ago
I’ll preface this with saying that Mario 64 is my favorite game of all time. Of course it has a bad camera.
3
u/Palehorse13 1d ago
See I still just don't agree. I think the camera does a perfectly reasonable job keeping up with the action.

Where did the sprites for the chain chomp's face come from? I'm assuming this was further modded somehow.
4
12
u/joestaff 2d ago
Watched with it muted so I can't hear the music, but based on the closed captioning, I'm assuming it's some sort of mid-2000's rap song.

It’s a very cursed rendition of the main theme of babomb battlefield. I actually quite like it. The detuned and reverb heavy base line is very eerie juxtaposed to the cheery horns we all know and love. And the syncopated rhythm of the snare/high hate combo is exposing a deep seated anxiety present in the tune, almost like this malformed version of Mario 64 is dispassionately begging the player …. “” kill me””

It's Bob-Omb Battlefield, but the guy playing the accoridon gets stuck at the most unfortunate notes

Looks like a PS1 game, lol. Wow but I bet the framerate in JRB is like 5 fps.
But yea this is awesome. Seems like anything is possible these days.

This is very impressive, the Jaguar has a reputation for being very difficult to program for.
2
u/Roky10 2d ago
do you guys really enjoy playing these or it's just nostalgia kicking in
16
u/Spontanudity 2d ago
For me it's the tech side of things - how a game on one platform would look on another given varying technical capabilities. Or even if it could run at all. I love those 'porting Doom to ridiculous things' videos for exactly the same reason.
11
u/Waterfish3333 2d ago
This is just impressive. YouTube some actual Jaguar games and then imagine playing this instead. Obviously it’s not going to compare to the N64 but for the hardware it’s super impressive it looks this good.

I vaguely remember reading an article in a game magazine in the mid nineties saying that Nintendo should cancel the N64 and take over the Jaguar from Atari. This was right after Nintendo delayed the N64. I’m glad that Nintendo didn’t do this stupid plan.

I was thinking the jaguar was 64 bit too but I heard it was just two 32, still insane port
1
u/HotCarpenter8066 PC 1d ago
my cousin had a jaguar he got from a garage sale in like 2003, thing was already a meme by then. he spent weeks trying to get doom to run smooth and never quite got there, seeing mario 64 on it now feels like some weird timeline correction

Fantastic! Finally an excuse to get mine out of the cupboard and dust down that cursed telephone controller.
1
u/lordsnarf 1d ago
I've always admired the "because I can" attitude of the homebrew community. That said, the camera is giving me anxiety. This is the closest I've ever been to getting motion sick from a game.
Maybe it's just the hangover...

AI is amazing, it let's us make incredibly shitty ports.
2
u/Twigling 1d ago
Oh look, an ignorant "I hate AI" post.
Try reading the video's description before you make a complete fool of yourself:
"The engine is written from scratch in pure assembly"
0
u/-BluBone- 1d ago
I don't hate AI, but this is crap. We dont need baked down backports.
2
u/Twigling 1d ago
Then why did you bring up AI ? Just to remind you, you posted:
"AI is amazing, it let's us make incredibly shitty ports."
Are coders not allowed to experiment and challenge themselves? Can't you even bring yourself to be impressed at the technical achievement? - coding on old and very limited hardware can be extremely challenging. Did you know that the Jaguar was released a couple of years before the N64 ? The N64 is a far more capable machine, also the Atari Jaguar hardware is mainly sprite-based while the N64 is 3D polygon-based, which makes porting Mario 64 to it even more of a challenge and the result even more impressive.

u/gaffythegrey 2d ago
Oh look, another Atari Jaguar post. Let me just add another tally in the count. Anyway, the way this is rendered kinda looks like a PS1 game I remember back in the day. Something about a blob that jumps around. Jumping Flash, I think? I just remember it being super jaggy like this.
